While I don't think billionaires should exist, the fact is that they do. So, it's through that lens that I'm happy to see one such person using at least part of their limitless wealth for good.

Wholesomeness is one of those things that's easy to feel but notoriously difficult to explain. It's that cozy, heart-warming sensation that permeates a story, a moment, or an image, something that's pure without being maudlin, kind without being goofy. In a cynical era typified by irony and ceaseless digital din, wholesome content pierces the white noise.

But what really makes something wholesome? Beneath the surface-level friendliness, there's a deeper emotional structure in motion. Ultimately, wholesomeness is authenticity. It resists the compulsion to mock, shock, or manipulate.

Wholesome moments are rooted in genuine care or compassion, a granny showing her grandchild how to bake, a stranger helping another without expectation of reward, a pet responding with pure affection. What makes these moments different from "cute" or "nice" ones is the emotional authenticity behind them.

Wholesomeness isn't performing or pretending, it simply " is". In a culture where so much communication is strategic, this kind of authenticity is like a breath of fresh air. There's also some safety in wholesomeness. It's the only place in culture where people can drop their guard. There, it takes the form of comforting material, anecdotes highlighting small gestures of kindness, status updates about improbable pairs, or parents laughing and proudly embracing their kids' quirkiness.

Wholesomeness is typically a function of contrast. A display of kindness in the face of harsh circumstances or display of decency in a cynical world rings more because it defies expectation. A gruff, hard-edged construction worker rescuing kittens, a young person helping an elderly neighbor, these resonate because they defy expectation. They show us that goodness isn't fragile or silly, but something quietly sturdy.

There's a social aspect to it, too. When people share wholesome content online, they're not doing it to go around sharing goodness, they're signaling that kindness matters. It's social recalibration, in a sense, a call to recall that compassion, humor, and softness are worth something culturally, too. Even brief, viral moments of wholesomeness can re-member people to that collective hunger for humanity that modern life shrinks.

Finally, something is wholesome not because it's flawless or neater, but because it feels real and restorative. It gives us permission to care, to smile warmly, to feel something unguarded for a moment. In a world that rewards in spades being detached and ironic, wholesomeness survives as an act of quiet rebellion, proof that sincerity, even in small doses, still has power to move us.

I know this might sound a bit self-righteous, but to be honest, I have no idea how to fixe the issue or even begin fixing the issue. Otherwise I'd be collecting my nobel peace prize. I just don't know how to fix the pain for both sides. You'd think the fact that one else is collecting their peace prize for it would be sufficient comfort, and yet all I can focus on is that we're both in pain as a direct result of the other. I don't even know where to begin.

Robin Williams was an inspiration to so many. So much so that it feels selfish to mourn his passing. He overcame his own addictions and become someone we look up to, but even he couldn't deal with how things have turned out. I have no reason to believe that I am even remotely as strong as he as, but still feel that It would be disrespecting him to give into temptation. As a side note, though... Am I the only one who absolutely adores hearing about genre breaches like this? I had recently learned that Elton John was Eminem's rehab sponsor, and felt like the breach between one genre to the next was amazing. I feel like you couldn't get any more different than Elton John and Eminem, but Elton John felt his pain and understood it beyond just face value. I don't know that I could be as accepting, but it's inspiring to know that it IS possible and that there are people I cam learn from to achieve that understanding. It might seem difficult, but it IS possible.
