An 83-year-old widow was left penniless because her husband only wanted to pass wealth down the male line. A UK court has just awarded her 50% of the full estate.
Yeah because the only thing your female line did was birth the male line, right.
So she had to go to court - meaning her son didn't want to share - 6utth0le!
Why should the widow even have to go to court? It should be a given that she receive at least half. As for the son, there is a word to describe him and his lack of action for his mother...
On the other hand, we don't know their situation, so we have no way of knowing whether she was a wonderful mother who totally got screwed over, or a super abusive mother/stepmother and that he had good reason to not wanna share with her.
Load More Replies...Doesn't the UK have similar laws to the rest of Europe? In Spain, and in a lot of European countries, the biggest part of your estate has "compulsory heirs", that is, your spouse and children *always* inherit. There's only a part (perhaps 20%) of your property you can give away freely to whoever yo want. You can only disinherit your wife or children in very few cases, for example if they tried to kill you, battered you and the like. I thought the UK was similar. I don't know if the explanation is clear. I don't really know a lot of legal terms in English.
In the UK you can leave your property to who you like in a will and legally you don't have to leave it to your spouse or children. You can leave the whole lot to charity if you want. However the courts can decide to ignore the will if it is unfair such as if there are young children who will be left with nothing. If a person dies without a will then it will go to the nearest next of kin so spouses, then children, then parents, then siblings etc. It has to be a spouse as well. Cohabitees have no automatic entitlement to their partners property if the partner dies intestate (without a will).
Load More Replies...If they had only 1 child, then this is quite normal. At least in my country. 2 heirs split 50/50
Load More Replies...This is extra super misogyny because even cultures that pass wealth down the male line allow for something to take care of the females.
Glad for her but I hope hubby is being tortured wherever his after life put him.
She's 83, if they married when she was 20 it was 1960.

So...the Queen (RIP) shouldn't have been put in charge as the figurehead of the country and one of the most wealthiest women in the world?

Victim blaming, it's always a treat to see. Yeah, well I'm sure it was entirely up to the the lady's choice if she wanted to marry a wealthy sexist jerk, presumably around 1960. And it certainly looks like her voice carried a lot of weight in that household, too. Well done, Rob, you display equal levels of logic and empathy.

Taylor Swift gives bonuses totaling over $55 million to every person working on a massive Eras tour.
I know I'm gonna get downvoted into oblivion but Taylor Swift is also apparently a billionaire now and I just don't believe there's a thing called "ethical billionare". To me this remains an oxymoron. I'm not saying she's a terrible person who's never done anything right (such as these bonuses), I'm just saying - nobody needs a billion dollars. Not a single person ever for themselves. And noone makes that in their lifetime without other people being exploited (even if indirectly) along the way. And yes - I absolutely see the same isses with all the Musks, Bezozes and all those weirdos.

Good news, the US are slowly adopting every single European law. Here a non compete agreement is legal but must be accepted by both parties, not last more than 1 (exceptionally 2) years and the most important part, be paid. That means that even after someone leaves a company, he’ll still get paid (not a full wage) as long as they want him away from the competition.

I'm probavbly going to get downvoted to hell for this, but I still think the lot of you are pessimists. Yes, these are bad things that should've been corrected long ago. Yes they should be the "base". But they aren't. So when these issues are eventually fixed, at least show a little gratitude instead of immediately complaining that it wasn't done sooner.
alot of these weren't wholesome because it made me think that we shouldn't have to fix those things like the dogs and animal abuse and the "wholesome" thing was that they were saved. like its so bad that they are abused
Too many of these are marred by commenters who just HAVE to sh*t on the topic or bring up unrelated things. Just let people have a moment without misery!
Some of these are so sad though. Eg. Dog rescued (yay)... after being abandoned (cries). Can we get a good stories that are happy without having to justify the hardships and emotional baggage people went though plz? Uplifting needs to be light.
