You might remember lucky packets as a child. You never really knew what to expect when you opened them. And that was all part of the fun. Same goes for Christmas crackers or wrapped gifts. With those things, the element of surprise is expected. But sometimes, the most unexpected items can hold a "gift" we never even knew was there.

Like finding money hidden in a mattress, an engagement ring in your glass of champagne, or a snake in your car engine. People have been sharing their most surprising discoveries after they opened or broke something by mistake. Some are super cool, some are oddly satisfying and others are just plain strange. Bored Panda has compiled a list of our personal favorites. Keep scrolling and don't forget to upvote the ones that left your jaw on the floor.

When a South African woman bought a loaf of bread and left it in the refrigerator, she wasn’t expecting much. Except to be able to take the bread out and make herself a sandwich as and when needed. Nombulelo Mkumla had purchased the bread at a local store on the 27th of August. The first two days eating it was rather uneventful. As far as daily bread goes.

But on day three, things took a rather unusual turn. ‘On the morning of August 31st, I took the bread out of the fridge to make toast and noticed something disgusting and scary,’ she said, during an interview with a food magazine.

On the Reddit thread, there a link to a Wikipedia page explaining how fungus can color wood. It even goes into some detail describing how to do it on purpose, and when to stop it before it softens the wood too much to use it.

I would somewhat suspect that the bricks were around the original tree and as the tree grew, it grew up and around the bricks. I saw a tree one time growing THROUGH a chain-link fence ... like the fence was imbedded in the tree.

My mom has a huge oak tree exactly like that in her back yard. Chain link fence right through the center of it. Well, half of it is in her back yard. The other half is in the yard of the school behind her house. She pays to maintain it. We don’t want to call the attention of the school district to it, because we suspect if they knew it was there they’d want to take it out as a precaution.

When Mkumla opened the bread, she found something she totally was not expecting. But she couldn’t figure out what it was. So she took a photo. “I sent it to my friends, and one of them said, ‘Yi mpuku leyo tshomi‘.” Translated to English: “That’s a rat, my friend.”

Yes. You read it right. A rat. Or rather, pieces of rat remains, had been baked into her store-bought bread. Talk about finding "interesting" things inside of something else. Unexpectedly.

When we had to tear up our entire kitchen floor to replace, there was a mound of dirt under it in the crawl space. Here’s what she said they said: “I sincerely apologize for what happened to you. It shouldn’t have happened, but you must understand that it gets hot where we bake our products, so things like this are bound to happen.’ Yes, I admit that your bread had a rodent. We are putting measures in place to prevent this from happening again. Don’t worry; it won’t affect you health-wise.” We might beg to differ.

Inclusions like that is the reason sawmills don't take what they call "city trees". If that was a metal object it would ruin an expensive saw blade.

This used to be true but isn't anymore. Now sawmills have metal detectors at the leading area because the metal detectors needed only cost about $150. Also, those saw blades have replaceable teeth now. The downtime for the repair is the real expense, the blade and teeth are barely a rounding error by comparison.

There have been stories about people finding anything from bandaids, to frogs, to teeth and even needles in the food they worked so hard to buy.

I had a job in small parts assembly back in the early 1970s, and put together stuff like that. Not a fun job, but the company I worked for had a component on a space capsule. We weren't told who made the part. Reasonable considering the fact that we were competitive enough without that knowledge!

It is theorized that First Nations people figured out maple syrup be watching squirrels that would bite into the bark of a maple tree, let the sap run out, and come back later and lick it to extract the sweetness. Most early people were aware of the power of reduction of fluids and in time figured out the boiling process.

The outer capsule is there to protect the pill from stomach acids. This way the medication can reach the small intestine where it will act on the biome there in addition to entering the bloodstream.

When I was a kid I wasn't able to swallow pills but needed to take allergy meds every day. So my mom would pull apart one of the caplets like that and mix it in yogurt for me. Bowling balls with an asymmetric core like this one make it easier for expert bowlers to make the path of the ball curve (hook) to target the bowling pins from an angle.

I get that’s it’s cheap and reasonably sturdy for what it is but I’d rather buy a secondhand bookshelf made of real wood and paint it. Could probably work out about the same price (or cheaper???) and it’s going to last. Though I understand for those with disabilities a lighter unit is probably preferable.

Nah. Sell them back. I grew up across from 16 tennis courts at the community college,. The land on the other side of the fence was undeveloped and wild. We would bushwhack and find all the lost tennis balls and then sell them at the entrance to the courts. Made a nice chunk of change, even at $0.25/ball (the 70's). We could find a dozen or more every morning cause the courts were lighted and open until 10p and no player wanted to go looking for a ball in the weeds, blackberries, poison oak and creek at night.

"Genuine Leather" is technically real leather in the same sense that chicken nuggets are technically real chicken--small pieces of leather that have press molded into a single large sheet and cut to need. Also known as "bonded leather" and often used for book covers. If you want actual leather--meaning leather made from a single whole cow hide, look for labels such as "whole grain leather" or "genuine calfskin".

Also, most leather watchbands with that raised profile have a cardboard filler layer. Even those of us who make handcrafted leather watchbands have to fill them with something. Cardboard is flexible and relatively soft, and once sealed between two leather layers will last a long time.

Those look more like buffer tubes, the bit that surrounds the fibers. I used to work at Corning cable systems; our cables were black rather than orange. The string is to help split the outer plastic, just pull. It's changed a lot since I worked with it!

I just recently took one of my old inhalers apart to see how it worked. Was surprised to find the medication in the little blister-pack rolls. For some reason I imagined the medication was in a round wheel inside the "diskus".

Time release pills. The inner layer of the pill will different levels of stabilizers, causing it to dissolve more slowly in the stomach so the dose of medicine will last longer.

Probably meant to release in small intestines for better absorption. The outer layer is to help the medication portion take longer to break down therefore the med makes it to the small intestine before being released.

... a twostroke, still... I'm always a bit taken aback when I see the inners of handheld fourstroke engines ... sidevalves, a plastic cam, usually, they're not peak tech, but quite the opposite - no wonder twostrokes survive there, still, as fourstroke engines aren't more efficient by default, ... anyway, a twostroke, it is, then...

Pills of different strength contain different amounts. For example, if each of these internal pills were 25mg, this would be a 100mg pill. One containing three small internal pills would be a 75mg. It's the simplest way to produce meds, I'd imagine.

I am fascinated by this because I have only ever had different doses medications that were produced separately. So the same d**g is made as 25mg or 50mg, for example, and if the doctor prescribes you 75, you take one 25 and one 50mg tablet. Many are also able to be broken in half (not if they are meant to be slow release) so you can add up the dose that way too.
