Found This Guy In Dumpster Few Days Ago
Awww....what a sweet baby. I hate people. Who would throw him away?
The type of human being who would do this should be taken out back, beaten around a bit for good measure, and finally locked inside a dumpster until they inevitably die. Even this would not be justice; it would just be a great way to rid the planet of this waste of space masquerading as a human being.
So apt as a first post to Times People Couldn’t Believe Their LUCK While Dumpster Diving. Lucky kitty is also lucky.
Pet Food When I Wasn’t Even Going To Go Out
Start out with just a little back story… we rescue special needs dogs. Some have emotional issues. Some are deaf. There have been neurological issues (a hydro that lived only 9 weeks… we had him 3 days before he crossed the rainbow bridge in his sleep). I sometimes worry about running short on pet food. I would go without long before I would let them do without. I get delivery every few weeks to know I’m staying ahead.
Tonight I was planning on going to the second hand store to get some shorts… pick up mower gas… long day at work… almost didn’t go.
But we did
Almost didn’t swing by the dumpster (it’s one we have gotten a crap ton of Starbucks k-cups and we almost always get something here that will help. Wasn’t going to swing by. But I did.
Peeked in and almost cried. 200+ pounds of dog food. Cat food for my son’s rescue cat. Cat litter for my son’s rescue cat.
Some days I can see the little rays of sunshine.
i can only hope the tossed food wasnt recalled and that's why it was in the trash :( EDIT: went into the link, and it was a discontinued product, not a recalled one, so epic find for the doggos!
Thanks for your research 👍🏼, that also occurred to me. But it's all good, and a BONANZA day for the rescues!
Load More Replies...This pisses me off. Why didn't the store or company donate it to a shelter?
Pure laziness...throw it in your trunk and drop it off, if the shelter didn't come to collect it. I hate to see waste like this when it is so easy to help *edit* glad this was found and didn't make it to the dump.
Load More Replies...I never understand why shops don't donate that food to shelters. Shops here in the Netherlands do this on a regular basis.
It's amazing and disturbing what people throw out. There are many shelters (both human and animal) that would take this. We need to stop being a throw-away society.
But I’m sad and mad that this stuff was thrown away when there is so many needy animals.
God I Love Working In Waste Disposal
The bass player's jealous girlfriend put it in the dumpster. The bass was getting more attention than her.
I was just thinking kind of the same thing. Probably some scorned gf/bf threw it out.
Load More Replies...Why would anyone throw this out? Just donate it to a school or something of you really want it gone straight away.
The only place that should be tossed is eBay. I'm pretty sure that that is an Alembic bass, I can tell by the pickup, the knobs, the wood pattern, and the frets. My whole family (except me and my cousin's husband) work there and my aunt is the owner. Alembics are high-end instruments that retail in the 4-5 figure range. So you could probably fetch a good price for that if you were to sell it.
That's not an Alembic it's an Aria. I think they came out in the late 80s or early 90's. Peavey made one similar to that one too. In any case, I still can't believe someone would throw something like that out.
Load More Replies...I'm just amazed someone had the audacity to part with that beauty.
While the term dumpster diving might sound a bit extreme, if you’ve never tried it yourself, we promise that it does not have to be unsanitary or a waste of time. It’s not simply swimming through rubbish, it can actually be a great way to find free food, great furniture or items that seem to have only ended up in the trash by accident. And if anyone can change your mind on the matter, it’s the Dumpster Diving subreddit. This group, which is dedicated to “fun with garbage,” shares “advice, information, and first-hand accounts about finding cool stuff in, or making cool stuff out of, trash.”
And clearly, many people have gotten on board with the community’s message, as it has amassed an impressive 241k members since its creation in 2009. The group even has a thread featuring members’ best dumpster diving tips and tricks, including: have realistic expectations, take a small step ladder, close all dumpster lids and doors when done, don’t dumpster dive at thrift stores, have an answer for when people ask what you’re doing, and, of course, safety comes first!

Found These Letters From 1938 In The Construction Dumpster At A Senior Care Place I Was Working At Doing Remodel Work
I think it's bitter sweet. The fact the person found it, and the fact construction workers just dumped them
Load More Replies...This is the kind of thing I'd be overjoyed to find. Photos and letters like this shouldn't be thrown away even if there's no family member to claim them anymore; they should be cared for by someone who understands their value. Sort of a foster family for letters and photos that no longer have families of their own.
My mom recently fell and broke her hip. My brother decided this was the perfect time to rent a dumpster, throw out everything she owned and sell the house she's lived in for 45 years. I was able to get the box family photos, most of her clothes, her purse, and a few collectibles she wanted. He priced the home below market value and sold it the some day. She never gave him POA and just bullied her into signing. What I wasn't able to get: a box of love letters from my late father that I didn't know existed. A folder of her family tree that went back to the 1600's. Her father's trunk that he brought over from Ireland that had her wedding gown and other momentos. The passwords to her email and bank accounts (ehe just had them pulled up on the desktop, never knew her passwords because my brother set them up. Still trying my best to sort her medical care so she can move out of the nursing home he put her in an one away from me so I can move her in with me.

Fascinating find, but so sad that they probably got dumped when someone died with no family to take them.
Can someone tell me what that letter says? I’m awful at reading cursive.
June 30, 1941 Dear Everyone, Before reading anymore of this letter, please sit down in comfortable chairs, tighten your safety belts and be prepared for a shock. I am about to swallow some of my most emphatic convictions. To get to the point- Georgia and I are going to be married Monday, July 7. This is nearly as much of a surprise to us as it is to you. We had planned doing this in late August or early September. Last
Load More Replies...The author wrote the letter how my mother speaks, half of the letter is telling the reader to prepare for something. I sometimes want to tell my mother "WHAT IS IT!? SPIT IT OUT! MY ANXIETY CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!". So happy for the writer and this Georgia though!
I have a large box of my Father's letters to my Mom from WWII before they were married. All of my Mom's letters back to him, of course, are lost. I would have loved to have read her letters to him because I found out she refused to marry him - not once, but twice! The did get married in 1946 and my Dad was killed in Korea in 1950.
Wow, you remember when people wrote letters?! Incredible history there…

If the idea of dumpster diving is foreign to you and you have a hard time getting past the idea of literally hopping into trash, allow us to explain some of the reasons why it’s becoming a growing trend and might even be the most environmentally friendly way of “shopping” nowadays. First, let’s understand why people do this. According to GreenMatters, it’s pretty standard practice for businesses to throw out unsold merchandise and food to make more room on shelves or to avoid having to put luxury brands on sale. This means that oftentimes, what’s in the trash isn’t actually trash.
I used to work at a coffee shop where we weren’t allowed to take home any of the sandwiches, soups, or pastries after closing time because the company assumed if we could, it would discourage us from selling them. So every evening, we had to find whatever was reaching its sell by date and simply throw it in the trash. This was incredibly wasteful, and it was painful knowing that that food could have gone to people in need, but that was this store’s, and many other companies’, policy.

Found At The Dump 19th Century Mahogany Plant Stand
I have neighbors who recently moved next door to me from an old house in Georgia. They found a mahogany (I think, maybe cherry) game table in their attic, but couldn't find a place for it here. They were going to give it to 1-800-JUNK, but I grabbed it and am using it. No idea how old it is, but the work on it is beautiful!
When it comes to food waste, RTS reports that the United States throws about 120 billion pounds of perfectly good food in the trash each year, or about 40% of the entire US food supply. Apparently, food takes up more space in US landfills than anything else, making up 22% of municipal solid waste, and the amount of food wasted in the US is worth approximately $218 billion. There’s no question that many of us should be cutting back on our consumption and waste production, and one way to do so is by pulling perfectly good food that’s been tossed out of the trash. As you can see from the pictures on this list, a little digging around in a dumpster might allow you to find lots of delicious items for free, that would have otherwise taken up space in a landfill.

Unfortunately some schools (I can only speak for Australia) genuinely only have space/time/money for keeping their kids clothes, fed, and educated. In the most basic sense. They have possibly asked around to see if anyone else could take them and got no answers. ( as an ex-secondary teacher, I have about 300 books in my garage that nobody wanted, or could accomodate. Mostly History books.

Even if you don’t need many items for yourself, dumpster diving can actually be quite the lucrative hobby. One Buffalo, New York-based couple told Business Insider that they make around $3,000 a month through their dumpster diving side hustle. Erin and Dave Sheffield shared that they began rummaging through garbage more than a decade ago and got the idea to start selling items they find in dumpsters of large depot stores. “Especially in the time we live in, you kind of have to realize that if you don't take that thing out of the trash, that's going to a landfill," Erin shared. "But also, you can actually make money." Some of the most valuable items they’ve been able to resell are a Prada purse and a truck-load of college textbooks.

Somebodies' wife had enough. No man in their right mind would throw away Anduril.
Not Anduril yet...no Elvish runes on the blade.
Load More Replies...As a note on why it may have been in a dumpster: it's not always easy to get rid of a sword. Many thrift stores won't accept this style of collectable due to it being a weapon, and resale has the same issue, fear of liability after selling it. Stupid, but true.
The Sheffields say that the best food items they find in dumpsters are usually taken home with them or given away to friends and family members, but they also shared that there will always be more valuable items that they can’t manage to save. “We can't possibly come close to even touching the amount of good stuff that's thrown away every day," Erin told Insider. "Even if we went out from sun-up to sundown, and went to every place we could think of, we still wouldn't get close to what is being thrown away in our city." You hear that, pandas? That means there’s plenty waiting out there for you too!
Just Saved These From The Dump
I was once at the grocery store and tore a strip off the guy in the produce dept. as all of the plants were dead or dying. I went to the manager and told him that if they were not going to look after them, to not sell them. Imagine my surprise, my groceries were delivered along with 53 plants - no charge.
They'd have more chance of surviving on the dump than with me :(
I briefly worked at a nursery and it was a crime seeing what was thrown away every week. Fortunately, we were able to take some of it home.
To me this is not a find. Only if you really like plants this could be a find.

Found This Bad Boy Near The Trashcans Of My Apartment's Parking Lot. It'd Been Out There A Week And A Half. Even Rained On A Little Bit. Didn't Expect To Power On At All
I wouldn't be surprised if this was like my old LG. There was a problem with solder joints, as temperature changed they'd expand and contract, eventually cracking and losing connection. So at some times (cold weather) the tv wouldn't work. Warm enough weather they'd expand just enough it'd start working again. Eventually it died completely. I looked at repairing and it wasn't worth doing. There was one suggestion - pull the board of the tv, put it in the oven and cook it for a little while to reflow the solder. Never bothered trying that.
i would have to pay 3 month of salary in my country to by something like this, and people simply throw with trash?!

Load More Replies...Aside from just finding great items for themselves and for others, dumpster diving can also be great for the environment, as it takes a small burden off of our already full, or nearly full, landfills. Countries like the United States are already dumping their waste in foreign countries because they have nowhere to put it all, and China, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia have had to enact bans on importing waste from other nations. Much of the waste in landfills is being burned as well, which is also a problem because it releases toxic gasses into the atmosphere, such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides. Every little bit helps when reducing waste, and dumpster diving can certainly make a difference.

If you’re wondering how to go about dumpster diving safely, Eco Friendly Fact has shared some of their best tips on their site so you can have successful dives. First, it’s important to always know the local laws and to get permission when necessary. Dumpster diving is legal in many places, but you should never embark on a dive without knowing your rights and the regulations. It’s also recommended to visit more dumpsters in less time. If you don’t see anything good on top, don’t waste too much time searching for a gem. Just move on to the next one, and come back another day.

Dumpster divers also recommend having a proper route planned before beginning the day. This can be an exhausting hobby, so mapping out where you want to go and creating an efficient plan can be extremely helpful. It’s also wise to be strategic and visit the dumpsters that will suit your needs. If you want to find groceries, go to grocery stores. If you’re in need of furniture or home goods, hit up those types of stores. And remember to only take the things you need. While it’s tempting to grab anything that looks valuable, you might not be able to carry it all, and you might not have anywhere to put it. And finally, always remember to bring your equipment: scissors or a cutting knife to conveniently open boxes and trash bag, gloves, a mask, goggles and bags or containers to collect and carry items.

I'm Currently Living In A Small College Town. The Dumpsters Are Gold Mines Right Now
I was shocked after I graduated and was the last person in the dorms. I was staying to work in the same town as my college so I got to roam around an empty campus taking my pick of all kinds of great stuff that had been dumped.

All from the trash bin of a single local bakery, on a single night... All unexpired. Sad and angry they'd just trash it, instead of donating, brightening some child's day.
The sad thing is, there are so many rules regarding giving away food…it is ridiculous! I would be bringing that stuff home with me, or bringing it to a homeless shelter. Rules schmules!

Most cities won't allow that for "health & safety" reasons. The reason Starbucks insists that all their day-old stuff MUST be trashed. If you try to take it to donate, they'll fire your butt.

That is beautiful! I have a cheap platic version, still vintage but not nearly as nice.
Glad I Didn’t Skip This “Empty From A Distance” Dumpster!
That’s what my house used to look like when we were in charge of giving alll the cookies to other troop members for them to deliver. We were the ones who got them from the makers, but still bought a lot because samoas!!!!

All New. Worth First Run In With Mall Security
I worked in security for a long time. I stopped policing dumpsters pretty quickly. Shameful what gets tossed out. If it's unsafe for some reason, yeah, I'll roust ya. But 90% of the time I hope somebody gets something good out of it.
This is about dumpster diving, so I assume they meant security chased them away from the dumpster. Why would you assume stealing??
Load More Replies...The story is probably that, like most malls, overnight security chases people who try to dumpster dive. Even though the items have been thrown in the trash, security sees it as "stealing" - but since it is in a dumpster, they can't detain you for that. Instead, if they catch you, they'll detain you for the police on charges of trespassing instead.

Parents are always trying to give these away where I live. Facebook marketplace is full of them. Once the kid is past their "train" stage or gets too big the tables are just taking up space.
My stepdad built a set of drawers to go under one of these when his grandsons were little. His daughter wanted to get rid of them as well as the table later on. Thankfully mum took them off her hands. Stepdad was quite upset, especially when she also didn't want the doll's house he built (and I decorated) anymore. I was able to take that.

Fourth Dorm Visit This Move Out Season
Tonight goes down as a personal best in my dumpster diving career. The dumpsters were beyond packed. Towels, more sneakers, snacks, jeans, dishwashing liquid. Just tons of stuff. I grabbed some gift cards, hoping for a few remaining dollars on the. These card were fully loaded. Looks like I'll be gassing up my car before going to Subway or Panera!
i assume someone threw them out thinking they were empty when, in fact, they were not. easy mistake to make.

Load More Replies...It’s all down to lawyers. If the stores donate/give it away and someone gets sick…instant lawsuit. We used to get leftover meat products from a local grocery store to donate to a small private animal rescue. Corporate shut that down right quick when they found out because they had been sued in the past for doing this. It was such a shame.
More companies do need to donate to shelters, food banks. A lot of companies don't want to get sued if they give it to charity. I know that most of the charities will freeze the breads to keep longer.

Average Haul From My Honey Hole. I Sometimes Hit It Up 2-3 Times A Day To Get Each Department
Makes me think of the bit John Oliver did on food donation. Most of the time it goes to waste because A: people think they can get sued if anyone gets sick (they can't) and B: most food banks don't have transportation service available to go pick stuff up.
But the stores do, even if it’s the manager’s car, ffs.
Load More Replies...So many people, especially children going hungry; why won't stores just give it away instead of throwing it away? I'm in the UK atm, and all of that looks fresher and more edible than some food I see in my local grocery store, no joke.
Because if people get sick from donated goods, they’d get sued.

Most soldiers have access to this kind of stuff unless they're in a war zone I think. My son has been overseas twice and both bases have stores that sell American stuff. Donate it to a food bank. Treats like that are far and few between for people utilizing a food bank
If you're ever looking for a place to donate damn near anything humans use, look up your local women's shelter. There's def going to be someone who needs food, clothes, computers, appliances. They will have a way for you to make sure your donation is used by people who REALLY need it

Wow! Wish the UK had such access to dumpsters. Most shopping areas and large stores /office buildings, have security fencing around the back of their property to stop 'dumpster-diving'.
try looking outside wealthy areas where a house is being fixed up. you can usually find stuff in those if the builders aint taken the good s**t already. when i lived in aberdeen i regularly found good tv and dvd players that i traded into cash converters. I remember about 10 years ago, there was some issue getting enough pickers at vineyards (or something, can't quite remember) in Australia. Wracking my brain trying to remember exact problem, all I know is it was before the needles in grapes scandal and that I was living on a vineyard at the time and had so many free grapes!

Do Better Dunkin
I managed dunkins for years!!! Used to donate our donuts to salvation army every night for their breakfast at the shelter. I don't remember why but something happened rules changed and we were no longer allowed to donate them. Only choice we had was to throw them out because they are unedible by that point...hard as rocks. I hated throwing out all those donuts....eventually we had a guy that would come pick up the donut bags every night to put outside for the deer and animals by his house. Idk how healthy it is for them but at least they were getting used for something....
For liability reasons. In this sue happy world, that's an issue. However, some places have protections from this and can donate. Personally, I like slightly stale donuts.

i'm so suspect of some of the food posts on here. having worked in a grocery store, it's true that a lot of very good food gets thrown away, but it's also very true that contaminated food gets tossed out unaltered (see: the posts of the broken aldi's fridge). stores are required to throw away food that has gone out of temperature (re: the broken fridge) because it's no longer safe. dumpster divers going for food are putting their health in danger, and if they're donating it, all those hungry people as well. and the makeup too! that can also be contaminated. society NEEDS to work on making food providers donate IMMEDIATELY upon unavailability for sale; it's the safest way people will be able to use what cant be purchased.
We never throw usable things out at home. If we don't donate we have special "buy nothing" groups.
Unfortunately, I don't live in an area where well to do people throw away tons of perfectly good stuff, but if I did, I certainly wouldn't be averse to a bit of dumpster diving. That being said, I think I'd probably pass on food.
wasting food like this makes me mad. Glad some people out there save it! Used to clean at a small supermarket that would throw *everything* away once expired. Everything in the bin. One day i put the bin outside, closed the shop and walked away. Oh, i forgot something, turned around and walked back. To find a homeless person (i knew him) bend over the bin. We looked at eachother awkwardly. I smiled and turned around again, went home. Old management would just put a box in the break room for us to take (cookies, cerial, pasta etc) The guy that would fill/check the fridge before opening would always give me the "expired" yoghurts. (note: yoghurt doesnt expire at midnight of the date on the bottle) Also, back in 2000 we saw several big stadium concerts which we left before ending due to reasons. When we would come out, we would find all the cans of soda that 1000's of people were forced to leave behind. We would take as many as we could cary every time.
Eons ago I worked on the trash pick-up truck that cleared waste bins in a Provincial park. Every day we came home with new and used-once camping gear that had been discarded when the campers checked out.
People spend a ton of money on camping gear, use it once and decide camping isn't for them, and into the dumpster it goes. Makes no sense. If you know you aren't going to use it again, sell it or give it to someone who will, don't just pitch it.
