Most of us have borrowed a thing or two from a friend or acquaintance. But there's an unspoken rule of borrowing: you have to return the item in the same condition you got it in. Since people are even bad at returning cash (25% of Americans say they never got back the money they lent to a loved one), can we really expect anything more with physical property?
To see just how bad it gets, we've scoured the internet for the worst examples of people returning borrowed items in an atrocious state. From broken computer mice to wrecked cars and ruined attire, these entries might make your blood boil at least a little bit.

I Let A Colleague Borrow One Of My Favorite Books, And It Was Returned To Me With The Pages Written On And Stuffed With Sticky Notes
I loaned a book to a friend, and she was enjoying a glass of wine while reading and came to a genuine laugh out loud funny part and spilled a tiny drop of wine on one page- she went and bought me a brand new book to return to me. THATS how you borrow books
Load More Replies...Sticky notes? A bit rude to not remove them before return, but fine I suppose. But writing?!
I cannot fathom why anyone would want to write in a (non-study) book, especially one that you borrowed!
Wow. That's just rude. I buy my own books so I can write in them and highlight them.
My husband borrowed this favorite book to his best friend. Some time later we visited him and the book (in miserable state) was being used as a door holder...
😡. Grounds for defriending and a replacement.
Load More Replies...This Is Why I Hate Letting People Borrow Stuff
My mom borrowed my (nearly new) heels months ago and forgot them in her car… She found them like this today.
Wow. My mom had very strict rules regarding borrowing clothes within our family. It had to be returned in the condition which it was borrowed. If not, it would have to be replaced. Five girls in my family.
My mom would feel terrible and buy me new ones if this happened (not that it would she’s a very responsible person)
My Partner Borrowed My Car For A Few Days, And Gave It Back Like This
If you're lucky enough to live somewhere with recycling incentives like that. I'm not 😞
Load More Replies...If they are not listed on your auto insurance policy as an authorized driver, DON'T let them drive your car. If there is an accident and they were driving, the insurance company can tell you that it will not cover the accident or the cost of the other person injured either.
Although some of the faux pas in this list are outright inexcusable, some of you, Pandas, might have returned a borrowed item damaged or ruined at least once in your lives, too. When it comes to borrowing from friends, we don't feel as guilty if we never return their items, for some reason.
What's the science behind that, you ask? Behavioral experts explain that it's precisely that close relationship that makes us think "It won't be that bad." As communication professor Emily Langan told The Atlantic, we justify it thinking "I'm doing something that's right on the border of unacceptable, but I'm doing that under the safety umbrella of a relationship, where if I did it to a co-worker who I wasn't friends with, they would call me [out on it] right away."
Roommate Let His Friend Use My Cast Iron Pan, She Ran It Through The Dishwasher, And Then He Left It In There For Days
Been seasoning this pan since I was 14 :/
Never lend again, and just season it again? The pan here loses/looses its seasoning every time I make stew, or what it may be called?
Loses is correct. Loose is letting something loose or something is loose on you. My shoelace is loose.
Load More Replies...It's fixable but unforgivable. Somehow, I'd manage to drop it on their foot.
I'd manage to whack them upside the head with it.
Load More Replies...Just re-season it. Frankly, all cast iron should be occasionally stripped and reseasoned. There's quite a few good reasons to do it, and no reason (other than time) not to. With self-cleaning ovens, it's actually crazy easy to do.
Never ever lean anything precious to you to others. You can tell them to be careful, cause you value it, they nodd and grin, then you get back a ruined thing or even nothing. Even so called best friends. Learned it the very hard way and deleted some so called friends. They dont respect you in no way.
I Let My Colleague Borrow My Laptop Charger For A Meeting. This Is How He Returned It
When I mentioned it to him, he told me it was “clearly an accident” and said I can “easily buy another one.”
I guess it's too much to expect an apology at the very least. Also? YOU buy them another one.
I Let My Son’s Teacher Borrow The Penguin Sculpture I Made And She Left It In A Windowsill For 6 Months
I spent several hours moulding and painting this penguin. It was lightweight, rubbery and pretty indestructible, so when my son asked to bring it to school for show and tell I figured the worst that could happen would be it getting detached from the base, so l obliged. His teacher liked it so much she asked to "borrow" it to use as a decoration in her classroom. She told my son she'd give it back at the end of the year. This is what he brought home. Apparently, her chosen place to display it was in an east-facing window.
I worked so hard on this thing and was so freaking proud of it. How it looks now is exactly how I feel: deflated.
WTF? That idiot should be paying you. How did she not notice this was happening and move it??
Also who asks to BORROW something like that from someone?!?!
Load More Replies...Should have paid for a replacement even if it was mainly your time that was spent on it.
I borrowed shorthand notes my mum had written when she was a paralegal, to show my legal studies teacher. I forgot to get it back after that lesson and when I asked for it after that, he had forgotten about ever seeing it and didn't know where it was. I never got it back and am still annoyed as it was the only example of my mum's shorthand I had.
The teacher and students didn't notice what was happening to it??? Such a shame!!! It was a really good looking penguin sculpture!!!
I loaned a teacher a battery that was made with Lexan so you could see how a battery is made. She refused to return it. Try finding a display battery like that. It's impossible.
The more of these I read, the more I think agreements should be made up, and signed and dated by both pastries in front of a witness. This is criminal. 😡😡
Load More Replies...Okay, that's BAD, but what was that thing made of or what kind of climate do you guys have??
Langan says that we tolerate lots of things in friendships out of fear of losing a friend. In relationships with family members, we might not be as careful. That's why we find it easier to ask family members to lend us things like clothes, computer accessories, or even ask them to share food.
It's harder to walk away from a relationship with a family member than with a friend. If you've ever tried to borrow something from your sibling, you know that asking for the same thing from your friend is much easier. The risk in 'stealing' something from a friend has a much lesser downside than 'stealing' from a family member, Langan pointed out.
Roommate Crashed My Car While Borrowing It To Go To Work Then Refuses To Pay Anything Unless I Let Her Continue To Drive It In The Future
Yupp. Verbal contracts aren't worth the paper they're (not) written on. Let her try suing you into borrowing
Load More Replies...Get the partner to text that, then go to a magistrate and file charges.
“Roommates”. Sometimes it’s easier to live with a relative or alone 🙄
Load More Replies...I Let My Sister Borrow My AirPods. This Is How She Gave Them Back To Me
Apparently, it’s from her hair dye. I’ve tried everything, and the stain won’t come out. The fact that it happens to be the color of earwax annoys me the most.
If the color doesn't come out and sister won't buy new ones, maybe coloring them with some better shade would be the way to go
Rubbing alcohol will do the trick. Works on everything (including hair dye) and won't ruin the finish.
try oxy as a paste and let it sit for a few hours. It may take it out.
I would not lend anything that goes into any orifice of my body to anyone for personal hygiene reasons. Buy your own earphones. They don't HAVE to be Pods.
Borrowed My Car To A Friend And This Is How He Returned It. (I'm A Non-Smoker)
Considering the age of that vehicle and the ashtray appearing to have years of use, I doubt it lost much, if any, value.
Load More Replies...clean out and disinfect the ashtray, vacuume out the car interior, spray some Febreeze and change out your air filter.
When we borrow something, we often treat it more carefully than if it were our own possession. In a 2014 study, researchers found that we "sacralize" such items. It might not be significant to us personally, but we deem that item important because it belongs to our friend. The stronger our relationship to that friend, the more likely we are to take good care of their possessions.
I Let Someone Borrow My Knife At Work, This Is How They Gave It Back To Me
I guess they used it as a lever, maybe trying to split something stubborn open (pumpkin or parmesan wheel?)
Load More Replies...What amazes me is that people have the nerve to give something back when it’s clearly broken and act like nothing happened?! Jeez!
My Brother Borrowed One Of My Books And This Is How I Got It Back
And this is why you do not store books in your bathroom right next to the shower cubicle.
My brother wouldn't even ask, he would just take books out of my room and I'd find them later beat to s**t.
Load More Replies...If someone returned a book to me like this I’d make sure their body is never found
I stopped loaning anyone except my sister my books...fed up with damage. People are rude users. One if my friends told me off for buying books, should borrow from the library to save money, and a few moments later asked to borrow the new book when I finished it. Told her the library probley has it. She never dared to ask again.
Heh. I managed to drop a borrowed copy of Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire in the toilet when I was a kid. Not sure what we did, probably bought a new one. But I have a strict rule: no books anywhere near the bathroom!
My Computer After I Let My Friend Borrow It
From the OP: "He dropped it". I ask where from, the roof onto concrete?
Load More Replies...Borrow it for WHAT? A frisbee session? A warehouse door stop? As a tennis racket? For construction?
What happened to the common courtesy of returning things in the condition you received them?
How can we make sure that we're not overstepping any boundaries when borrowing from a friend? Etiquette blogger Lee Cordon has some borrowing etiquette tips.
First rule: only borrow from close friends. If you don't have a person's phone number or email, don't ask them to lend you things. Just because you're Facebook friends doesn't mean they want to share their possessions with you.
And They Wonder Why I Don’t Let Anyone Use My Knife. Found This Hanging Up On The Magnet
I had a chef's knife with a lifetime warranty. I was cutting a frozen tomato and broke off the tip of the knife. You should have seen the woman's face when I returned it for a replacement. They asked how the knife had been damaged, and I responded with 'while slicing a tomato.
Cheap knife -- it appears to be a knock off or lower end -- that didn't have much of a chance in the long run.
This Is What Happens When You Let Someone Borrow Your Truck
Oh I would've cried. A mid 80s F250 in near perfect condition before this 😭 Luckily OP said insurance paid him for the truck and let him buy it back to fix it, but still...
rolled it? My insurance would be all over your 'friend' as a 3rd party settlement
That is what insurance is for. Bonus: You learn what kind of friend you have.
My Son Asked To Borrow Some Duct Tape... This Is What He Gave Me Back. Somehow Took Out The Entire Middle And Just Left The Sides
That looks like gorilla tape. It's actually insanely easy to do this with gorilla because of the direction of the grain. I've done it a half dozen times, but usually realize and correct after a few inches.
Load More Replies...my husband uses one half or the other... doesn't seem to think you need the full width but this one's new
Hahahah! Your first mistake was letting him borrow something consumable. Would you expect the used portion to be returned? If so, do not lend food!
Not hard to do if the edges "weld" themselves together and you get frustrated enough to grab whatever moves and keep pulling. Kinda like starting a roll of toilet paper or paper towels.
Reminds me of how many people take the packaging tape gun apart to put on a roll of tape. It never seems to occur to them, the new roll doesn't have the hub in it so why would you remove the hub from the gun? I've even had adults in their 40's that after showing them how to change the roll, they still don't understand. Yes, they don't understand, slide old one off, slide new one on.
Ask for something well in advance. If you hit up a friend about borrowing their high heels the night before an event, you'll clearly be putting them out. They'll have to scramble looking for the shoes, perhaps even clean them, and rush to get them to you in time. Cordon advises giving at least a few weeks' notice.
Friend Borrowed My Laptop. Said He Left It In His Car For A Day. What's Going On With The Screen?
Dad Borrowed My Tablet, Sat On It And Then Returned It Like This. God Damnit
Were do people find the nerve to return a borrowed item this broken. Have they no shame? I would be so embarrassed to return something in this condition and would definetly replace it or give them the money to buy a new one.
I think I have to stop reading this post now because it's upsetting me
Your dad can join that other guy's mom who returned a broken controler on my "don't like" list.
Loaned My Wife’s Brother My Truck So He Could Move. This Is What Greeted Me When I Got It Back
Oh come on! I don't drive and even I know refilling the tank afterwards is common courtesy!
My mom and I shared a car for a while and she would NEVER fill up when it was low! I’d have to go to the nearest station and sometimes be late for work!
OMG...Even my kids fill the tank before returning it if they borrow my car!!
Always pick up the thing you're borrowing yourself. Don't make the lender drop off the item at your house, workplace, or somewhere else. You're the one who needs it, so you should be the one putting in the extra effort to get it. Asking the lender to deliver the item is equal to asking them for another favor on top of the first one.
I Let My Brother Ride My E-Bike. This Is How He Returned It
I’ve had the bike for maybe 2 weeks. I let him ride it to work yesterday because I didn’t need to ride it. I rode it to work today and when I took the battery off I saw the key and the battery. This is how I get it back? Not only that, but when I push the bike the chain makes a clicking sound.
This is my first time owning an ebike and I have no idea what to do. When I would ride it to work before the battery would stay on 6 bars the whole way there and would only go down 1 bar when I got back home. On the way to work today it went down 3 bars and the 2nd bar is flashing indicating it’s going to drop down again. I don’t even know if I’ll make it home in 6 hours or not, I’ve got nobody to pick me up so I’ll have to see how this goes and hope for the best.
I keep the e-bike in side to stay out of the rain. The battery is always removed from the bike when not in use.
He promised he would take care of it and if it rains he said he wouldn’t ride it. He lied.
My Mom Borrowed My Gaming Mouse Because She Lost Hers. This Is How She Returned It
Has Mommy been using snail slime and mashed potatoes to wash her hands?
This is so confusing, when I borrow something I try and give it back in better condition.
Bloody V7M, at least they are cheap AF. or just remove the top layer using the rubbing alcohol - it would happen sooner or later anyway. source: i'm still using the exact same model after 15 years.
Before And After My Little Brother “Borrowed” My Racket For Badminton Practice
Return the item in the same – or even better – condition. This is the golden rule that many of the borrowers in this list didn't follow. If you borrow someone's car, drive it to a carwash and have it vacuumed. If you're borrowing clothes, wash them too, or even have them dry cleaned.

I Think My Husband’s Going To Realize I Borrowed One Of His Extension Cords

Yeah, my husband wraps them like this, too. I have not gotten the hang of it. But A for effort! I feel you!
My Mom Let Her Friend Borrow Her Van For The Day And It Got Returned With This
When I first got my car, it was parked outside my house and someone came along and keyed it. It still says F**k Me on the bonnet, 10 years later because I haven't spent the money to fix it.
Say 'Thank you' or reciprocate. Returning the item promptly and with a "Thank you" note is the polite thing to do. Better yet, offer a favor in return. Borrowing and lending don't have to be a quid pro quo, but it's always nice to know that a borrower will have your back in the future if needed.
Let My Friend Borrow My Earbuds For A Week
Before giving them to him, I took a toothpick to the insides, and wiped down the tips with disinfecting wipes, making sure that they were spotless. I'm a very clean person, almost to the point of being a mild germaphobe. I specifically asked him to take care of them, as they are $300 Sennheiser MTW 4s. He only asked to borrow them for a week, and I kind of forgot about it. A month later, I ask for them back, and he legit spends almost 20 minutes rooting through his wreck of a room before he finally pulls them out of a random pair of jeans on his floor. I thank him and head home shortly after. I pop the case open to give them a disinfecting wipe down before using them again, and see this abomination. Common sense and human decency people. sigh
When Someone Borrows Your Needle Nose Pliers And Returns Them Like This
As a biology student i had a very delicate mikro pliers, an other student at the same workshop walked in with no asked for tools, called me unsocial for not leaning them to him, then dropped it and it looked like above. I gave my last money for this tool, had to work with it for the rest of the semester, was yelled at by professors, this idiot had a "moneybottle" at home, were his relatives stuck money into it. Guess, i had nothing like that, had to work for.
I hate when that happens! I’ve bought another pair which I keep hidden. You want to borrow? You get the old ones.
My Neighbor Borrowed My Hedge Trimmer. This Is What She Did To My Extension Cord
Bonus points for the best way how to fix this.
Let her know you could have been electrocuted and watch the colour drain from her face, then tell her she owes you a new one by the end of the week.
If she returned it like this, she likely wouldn't have cared if you DID get electrocuted!

It's a bit bulky, sure. But it's the safest way.
Load More Replies...Buy a new one, that's the only way to fix it. Your life is worth more than money.
Take it to a hardware store, and just about any of the staff walking the aisles could help you.
I remember those days! 😀 Around here, getting that kind of help at a big box hardware store is like finding your one true love - it only happens once in a lifetime. I don't know if it's still open, but there used to be a top-notch appliance repair place nearby.
Load More Replies...to be fair - I accidently did that to my husband's hedge trimmer - I'd been soo good about watching the cord and then I got into a patch of my plants and just missed where it was...splut and stopped... it was locked into the chain belt. fortunately I'd plugged it into a GFI... he just spliced on a new cord and voila... off I go to try not to do it again.
The cord can be spliced back together. Cut it, strip the wires back a few inches, twist together to correct wires, use 'shrink to fit' splice connectors (preferred) or wire nuts. Using electrical tape, cover each splice, then cover the entire mended portion. The cord will never be perfect so; do not leave out in the weather, do not leave plugged in when not in use. Inspect for damage before each use.
Don't ask to borrow heirlooms and respect it when you're told "No." Some people just might be too polite and don't know how to say "No." Be the bigger person in a situation where you see that someone doesn't want to lend you their favorite or cherished item or just straight-up don't reply to your request.
I Let A Kid In My Class Borrow My Calculator, I Got It Back Covered In Scribbles
I used to do that to calculators, but they were mine, I’d never do it to someone else’s property
Pretty sure that kid forgot to take his ADHD meds that day, that sucks... But at least it's pencil! Guess what'll clean that up? Rubbing alcohol 😁
I can only imagine if these people are renters how they treat someone else's property.
My Mom Borrowed My Car. Got It Back Smelling Like Cigarettes And My Mints Perfectly Trapped In My Cup Holder
One of those pointy ended nail files would get the mints out. You use it as a lever.
Get a drill, drill a screw into the top of the mints. Voila! A handle to pull them out!
I've never had a cup holder like that but based on what I see, there's another issue: it looks like you'd have to simultaneously push back both of those tension grips. Ends up like a job that requires three or four hands. I'm hoping that the grips are removable. Either way, I'd give a magnet a try before I drilled.
Load More Replies...That is why the cup holders have inserts... To pull them out for thorough cleaning. I'd bet this one has that same insert. Albeit, it's common for them to be hard to detect.

My Ex-Wife Borrowed My Car Saying She Needed More Room. She Left Me Her Mini Cooper. This Is The Tire
I'm sure some people would consider this more than mildly infuriating but I guess she didn't have the money to get it fixed and this was her way of asking for help. she can't be driving my son around on a tire like that it's not safe. "Well it wasn't my car" would be a terrible eulogy.
I would ask her before replacing the tire (or set of tires). It might be cheaper to help her find a decent used car and maybe help her with cash. It isn't just your son's life. It is also his well-being if he loses his Mom in a wreck.
And we as women don't know how to do basic auto maintenance or get a tire replaced??? You and this comment are a disgrace to our kind. This woman is clearly a grown child who can't be responsible enough to take care of a vehicle, let alone an actual child.

I Gave My Colleague A Book To Read A Few Sentences Out Loud And She Bended It All Over. Ain't Smooth Anymore
I have read almost half of it and it was completely flat and smooth. Can't focus on the plot now that I feel it while holding. I'm so annoyed.
I mean, I have many paperbacks and none of them have such obviously creased spines. OP’s colleague just had to be careful, but was careless instead.
Load More Replies...Seriously, people, stop writing "borrowed to". It's "loaned to" or "lent to".
That annoyed me, too, but not nearly as much as the appalling parade of rudeness and lack of responsibility for the damage they caused or allowed.
Load More Replies...What I see is a lot of inconsiderate people who have no respect for other peoples property and whom I certainly would never ever call friend ever again if they pulled this kind of shyte. Accidents happen , and if they happen to other peoples property you either pay for the damage or buy a replacement. It goes without saying you are always twice as careful with other peoples property than your own.
Learned y lesson in grade school after lending someone a pencil and got it back chewed up and no eraser. I also don't let people eat or drink in my car. They are not careful and will leave their garbage behind. Do not negotiate with terrorists. Just like if you lend money, expect to not get it back
And this is why i never let people borrow my stuff. I like nice, quality things and sometimes those things can cost A LOT. "It's just a scratch" does not cut it for me.
The amount of parents wrecking their children's belongings is appalling.
We loaned so called friends our van whilst theirs was in the shop. They kept it longer than they needed then said oh well we could have given it back ages ago but were too busy. They let their brats trash it, left it full of mold and food. Their 5 year old drew all over the dash and didn't return it. We had to get the vehicle. No thanks, no petrol in the tank, and it was running badly too. Mrs clean freak told me it wasn't that dirty just needed a quick vacuum... it needed to be bombed. Never again.
I have zero sympathy for those who got their earbuds/headphones messed up. It's just gross and you deserve it.
Seriously, people, stop writing "borrowed to".
