30 Fantastic Roles That Got Absolutely Ruined By The Wrong Actor
Interview With ExpertCasting movies and running auditions is an incredibly responsible job. You essentially have to find talented individuals whom you can see bringing the characters and the script to life in the best way possible. Not only that but casting the lead means picking someone who can be the face of the entire franchise. That can mean going through countless rounds of auditions and interviews while you evaluate hundreds, if not thousands, of potential actors.
And even then, after so much trouble, the audience doesn’t always think the actors embody the characters well enough. There’s a disconnect somewhere. The r/AskReddit community was candid about what iconic film roles they personally thought were miscast. Scroll down to see their opinions, and let us know in the comments whether or not you agree with them.
We got in touch with the author of the viral thread, u/LuckyLaceyKS, for a chat about miscast roles. Meanwhile, Bored Panda also reached out to entertainment, pop culture, and lifestyle expert Mike Sington for his thoughts about the challenges that casting directors run into. Read on for both of our interviews!

John Wayne as Genghis Khan.
Oh no. Mickey Rooney as Mr Yunioshi in Breakfast at Tiffany's has it beat.
Load More Replies...John Wayne in any role. He couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag.
I'd like to hear the pitch for this movie. The mental gymnastics must have been insane. John Wayne as an Asian dude, now go!
Let's not forget Peter Lorre as Japanese detective Mr. Moto and Boris freakin' Karloff as Chinese detective Mr. Wong. Hollywood wasn't even trying back then.
And to top it all off the entire cast was irradiated by nuclear fallout...
This one is a case of hindsight being 20/20. In 1956, when the movie was released, Wayne was at his height of popularity. A modern equivalent would be Keanu Reeves. Everyone knew Wayne's name, and that alone was a draw to a movie, so having him star in a film, was practically a guarantee that the movie would make money. By comparison, in the same year, there wasn't a Chinese, or Asian male lead who carried the same weight. Meaning that casting anyone else, when the studio has Wayne already on hand through contract, would be unheard of. It might work, but more likely, the film would bomb and the studio would lose money. So they went with the sure thing, even if he wasn't the right choice.
Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.
He played Reacher as he funded the films. Alan Ritchson was great as Reacher in the series
IS great. Season 3 is on the way. I really hope we get a good half dozen seasons. I'm not sure we need as many as there are books, but if they can pick half a dozen or so of the best stories I'll be happy.
Load More Replies...The guy in the books is 6 ft 5 in tall, is described as extremely broad, with a thick neck, fists the size of supermarket chickens and hands the size of a plate... But Tom Cruise funded the movies so he got to play it...
I like him in Mission Impossible but that doesn’t mean he should be in every action film. They seems to become a generic hero when he plays them. I watched the recent mummy and he’s playing an insubordinate military man, which would work if somebody in their twenties was playing him. At his age he would have been forced to leave decades ago or retired. Worst casting ever.
Load More Replies...This was my worst film ever. Jack Reacher is over 6 ft and Tom Cruise is just over 5ft and looks like a wet metro-sexual, not a tough ex-military man.
Tom cruise is probably 5' 6" but normally listed as 5' 7".
Load More Replies...Having read all the books I was flabbergasted when I heard who they cast. Never watched the movie (s?) to avoid the inevitable disappointment.
I upvote mostly because of use of word flabbergasted, I absolutely adore it :D
Load More Replies...I had a colleague who was a huge fan of the books and she was laughing when TC was cast because Jack Reacher in the books is meant to be super tall. I've not read them (not really my genre), nor have I seen this version. Seems from what I've heard from everyone who knows about it that it was a bit of a casting "nope"
I'm an outlier but I actually quite liked Cruise as Reacher. He's obviously not the physical match like Ritchson but his portrayal was fitting. Child himself approved, for what it's worth. All this said, Ritchson is now Reacher forever in my mind.
I JUST used this as an example in a comment for the Breakfast at Tiffany's entry. Although I liked him in the role and liked the films, he's bad casting as Jack Reacher. The show got it right.
Jared Leto as Joker. Absolute waste.
Well, he really really tried, to be honest. But it's difficult to match previous jokers.
But he took his method acting way over the top to the point that he was seriously harassing his costars. He would stay in characters and gift them creepy “gifts” like broken condoms and a dead pig. It became more about his ego than the actual performance.
Load More Replies...Is he ever good at any role? I recall him in The Panic Room and he was okayish, but I've never seen him and thought what a great performer.
I'm not sure if I liked him in Mr. Nobody or I just enjoyed the film too much. And it's from 2009, so he was really young compared to now...
Load More Replies...Yeah awful. Reminded me of the kind of early 2000"s edge-lord nonsense. Plus he was a bëllend to his fellow cast throughout for no reason and is a jäckass in general. Joaquin proved that it was possible to follow Heath Ledger's legendary Joker and do so amazingly, Jared just doesn't have the chops for it. He's not been good since Requiem for a Dream.
He made a tired joker, but then again I don't really like him in almost anything.
Leto is by no means my favorite, but nowhere near the bottom. Solidly below him are the portrayal in the early 2000s animated "The Batman" series, whatever garbage will be in the Pattinson sequel based upon the glimpse we got, and Joaquin Phoenix. He was terrible, and that is a hill I'll die on. Leto wasn't as good as Hamil, Romero, Nicholson, or Ledger, but middle of the pack.
Thank you, I was hoping someone would mention Romero. I remember watching him make his debut as the Joker when I was a kid. Loved him.

Redditor u/LuckyLaceyKS, who sparked the entire online discussion, told Bored Panda that they're a huge fan of the popular 'Uncharted' video game series. The franchise even spawned a movie in 2022. However, u/LuckyLaceyKS thought that Mark Wahlberg was miscast as Sully in it. That was the initial inspiration for the thread.
"It's hard when you have a connection to a franchise before the movie comes out. People can be very passionate about their favorite franchises and their fancast preferences, which is why I think the post got as much attention as it did. I didn't expect so many comments!" they said.
Jack black should have been the genie in the live action Aladdin and I will die on this hill.
To be fair, I don't think anyone could have come close to Robin Williams' portrayal in the animated version.
No one can ever take his place. Robin Williams is one of my few personal heroes. The world would be a better place if more people tried to be like him.
Load More Replies...I thought Will Sntih was great in that movie! Here come the downvotes...
Agreed - I thought they did a good job of adapting the part for him. It's one of the better live action adaptations
Load More Replies...Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman.
For the entirety of the movie, I kept wondering in which universe would Kristen Stewart be fairer than Charlize Theron??
Monster universe Charlize (the movie "Monster" I mean, not the Gozilla monsterverse).
Load More Replies...Kristen Stewart in anything.... I'm sorry I just can't get over her poker face, how on earth is she an actress if she cannot express one other emotion on her face?
The acting wasn't too bad, she did alright, but I never thought she was all that pretty. Especially not next to Charlize Theron.
I've been saying this since i saw the first promo! In what universe is Kristen Stewart the fairest ever? Shes the plainest of the plain Janes and Charlize Theron is a goddess.
Jessie eisnburg as lex luthor.
Too young, too much hair, too much manic crazy psychotic terrorist professor to be Lex. Let is supposed to be calculating and calm to the extreme. At least on the outside.
The hair thing actually tracked with the comics. Lex started out with long hair and later sported a full beard. He later lost his hair when Superman came to save him during a fire, and Superman's breath (he blew the fire out) caused a bottle of acid to spill over Luthor's head, and burn his hair away. Also, early Luthor, from the 1940's, was a manic crazy psychotic terrorist professor. He was also a young man. One of the early writers of the comics noted, that Superman was to be perpetually 29 or so, and Luthor was meant to be, at least visually, five or six years younger. So... hate to say it, that Luthor? It's on par with the original way Luthor was presented. Not the Luthor from the 80's or 90's.
Load More Replies...I read that his portrayal of Lex is an interesting version of the Joker and I can't unsee that.
Truth EXCEPT the last scene with him in the jail. That was one of the best parts of that movie.
Considering he's based off a specific version of the character from the comics, this was actually great. People have this weird idea that Lex is always the angry rich dude from Reeve's Superman, but he has plenty of versions. He's even president of the USA in recent stories.
The character version they went with, seems to pretty closely follow the original Luthor from the 1940's and into the 1960's.
Load More Replies...Eisenberg was playing Eisenberg in that movie. I did quite like Michael Rosenbaum as Lex in the series Smallville -- many different layers to his character in that. Titus Welliver also had a unique take on Lex in the series Titans, but he didn't get much screen time, relatively speaking.
Hackman was too campy. There were moments when he was menacing as Luther but most of the time he almost played as comic relief, made worse by having henchmen who were literal comic relief. Say what you will about Spacey, but I thought he made a good Luthor.
Load More Replies...Someone else that the OP thought was definitely miscast was legendary actor Tom Hanks in 'Elvis.' According to the redditor, it's a "hard pill to swallow" because Hanks is such a powerful and capable actor. "This role and accent were just not a great fit for him," they said.
On the flip side, the author (just like us!) was a big fan of Meryl Streep's iconic portrayal of Miranda Priestly in 'The Devil Wears Prada.' Streep is, without a doubt, a force to be reckoned with on the screen, but u/LuckyLaceyKS said that "she owned this role and exceeded the expectations of the character's portrayal in the book." They added: "Absolutely iconic."
Another favorite of the author’s is Christoph Waltz’s acting in ‘Inglourious Basterds.’ "He was a scene stealer in an incredible film with a wildly talented cast. That's a hard feat to accomplish."
For u/LuckyLaceyKS, actors who take their time to do their research are a big favorite. "From studying mannerisms of subjects for biopics to doing hard work like working in kitchens for chef roles, I think it's more believable when you immerse yourself in the subject before filming. I love that Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri spent so much time in kitchens before filming ‘The Bear.‘”
This one is more Tim Burton's fault, but Johnny Depp made an *awful* Wonka.
There was only one, there is only one, there shall be only one Wonka. ETCETERA ETCETERA! Gene.
Couldn't agree more Why anyone thought there needed to be a reboot of the movie and/or any other Wonka than Gene Wilder makes no sense to me.
Load More Replies...I liked him as Wonka.. Anyways, Tim Burton's film was a typical Tim Burton one - his take.. so Depp played a whimsical one... I thought he was good
Depp was still a lot better than Chalamet. I also kinda liked the weird creepy mania he had going on xP
Can we get an honorable mention for the entire cast of Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd?
I’m not very excited about Johnny Depp (except as Captain Jack Sparrow). He really likes overdoing it - strange costumes, strange hair, strange over-the-top performances. I think he’s good when he plays a regular person but he likes playing the odd characters and makes them as quirky as he can.
Load More Replies...I was fine with Depp, but at least him and the original (forgot his name) had the aura of manic intent, Chalamet was just...too friendly.
I always felt Gwenyth Paltrow as Pepper Potts didn't fit. I don't know what Pepper was like in the comics, but she seemed to have very little chemistry with RDJ in my opinion. Maybe I just hate her for all the voodoo she tries to sell tho.
Considering she denies ever being part of the films, I wholeheartedly agree. Now she’s telling rich folks to live off bone broth and makes candles that supposedly smell like her vagina.
She doesn't deny it, she just pretends she doesn't remember because it's qUiRkY
Load More Replies...I can't recall a movie that I liked her in. Besides, she seems to be a caricature of her real life self- no need for movies.
So did I. It's her performance in Goop that I thought was off.
Load More Replies...
Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty and the Beast.
She's got the looks down, but her singing is meh to the point they had to autotune it and it sounds weird. Her acting is also stiff and fretful and she doesn't have any chemistry with any of the other actors, let alone Beast. There were better choices for the role.
One of the instances where they cast an actress because she has a big young fan base knowing that it would help get ticket sales. Good business sense but the movie could have been obviously better by casting a musically talented actress.
Load More Replies...This is 100% what I thought. Heck she even looks just like the cartoon character
Load More Replies...They saw a bookish character who's also brave and immediately cast Hermione Granger.
I loved B&B and I love her but yeah, it felt so out of place to have her as Belle. She's a good natural beauty but I really wish they had gone with an unknown actress with better vocal range. Again, I LOVE Emma Watson, but this felt very much off-point (also, they did NOT do the dress justice).
I didn't think she had the looks either. Something was off and it's her influence that threw the costumes off and earned us that yellow monstrosity. But it was the producers fault. He wanted her at all cost and I got the feeling she was pressured to accept although she wasn't the type and never wanted to be a Disney princess
To be fair, it's got to be hard to have chemistry with someone done up in a mountain of prosthetic makeup or CGIed in using green screen and a tennis ball.
Meanwhile, Bored Panda spoke to entertainment expert Mike Sington, aka Hollywood's Ultimate Insider, about casting challenges and how actors can connect with the audience more. He told us that casting the perfect actor can make or break a production. First, you need an actor with the right skills and experience for the role. "They should be able to embody the character's emotions, motivations, and even physicality," he told us.
However, one issue is that actors who look exactly like the characters might not have the strongest acting skills. Moreover, actors with the most talent may look nothing like the characters they need to depict. So, casting directors are on the lookout for a balance between the two: they look for the sweet spot between appearance and talent.
"Sifting through mountains of auditions can be overwhelming, but having a limited pool of actors can also restrict the creative vision," Sington said. "So, how do casting directors make the tough call?"
According to the entertainment expert, multiple rounds of auditions with different scenes and scenarios can really help assess actors’ range and how able they are to adapt to different situations. It's also vital to see how the actor interacts with the rest of the cast. "The right actors will bounce off each other naturally," Sington said that they'll create on-screen relationships that the audience will think are believable.
Obvious, but necessary mention of Kevin Costner is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I'd say most of the starring roles were miscast, but none as offensively bad as "Kevin Costner plays....Kevin Costner".
Robin Hood is one of my favorite stories and I must agree with the submitter. However, Alan Rickman was fantastic as the Sheriff of Nottingham.
As Cary Elwes' Robin Hood Men in Tights said "I can speak with an English accent"
Agreed. MiT is the best Robin Hood movie, ever. :)
Load More Replies...I was obsessed with that movie when it came out. In my defense I was 15. Watching it now is horrifying. Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman, and Christian Slater were awesome. Costner looked like a midwest dad who got d**g to a Ren Fair against his will.
Fun fact: the language Robin Hood, assuming he was real, was not modern English with any accent. Prince John and company would have spoken Norman French and Little John, etc, would have spoken a form of English earlier than Chaucer's (Thomas Beckett had been dead about 20 years). Neither sounded like either Kevin Costner or Errol Flynn.
I'd love to see a more historically accurate Robin Hood film where they speak their proper languages, subtitled.

How has no one said jake gyllenhall in prince of P E R S I A.
The movie was a loss anyway when it turned into a "Never do this thing!" But the thing ends up saving everyone movie.
I kinda love the film too! I know objectively it's not great, but I love it 😅
Load More Replies...I hang my head in shame... Saw it a week.or 2 ago (at least I didn't fork out for the cinema though), and it's total s**t. In fact, Jake G is the only redeeming feature!
Load More Replies...Iranians are white people. Caucasian as in the Caucasian Mountains, which are in Iran. Heck, Hitler's "Aryan" racial identification comes from the same roots as "Iranian."
George Clooney in Batman & Robin (1997). Only slightly worse than Val Kilmer in Batman Forever (1995). I don't know what it was about the 90's that every big name was signing up to do a one-off as batman, but that was a bad decision.
I was just avoid to say that. Literally the only version of batman i liked. (Solely for the fact Val Kilmer was in it lol)
Load More Replies...Keaton didn't come back because he didn't like what Schumacher was doing with the character of Bruce Wayne apparently. And Val Kilmer didn't come back because he hated working in the suit.
Load More Replies...The paycheck is why every big name was signing up to do a one-off as Batman. Plus, maybe they figured they'd be the one to bring the franchise back.
Not Clooney's fault. I think he could have been a great Batman if the script hadn't been so bad. As bad as this whole movie was, I think Uma Thurman was the most miscast.
Ok, but the whole movie is so bad it becomes fun to watch if you can get over the second hand embarrassment
At the end of the day, casting directors develop an intuition for who to hire to bring characters to life after years of experience. But, Sington warned, even if you take all of these steps, there’s still no guarantee that you’ll make the right choice.
"Sometimes, the magic only happens once the filming starts. But by carefully considering these challenges, casting directors can significantly increase their chances of finding that perfect match."
There's a lot of responsibility resting on the actors' shoulders to connect with the audience, too! Luckily, there are various ways that they can make their performances resonate on a deeper level. For one, authenticity is absolutely essential when it comes to making characters relatable.
"The audience can spot a phony performance a mile away," Sington said, urging actors to embrace vulnerability and draw on real human emotions.
Nathan Drake. That role was and always will be Nathan Fillion's role to play. It's such a shame Hollywood never called. He *wanted* the role. He even financed his own YouTube short film showing what an Uncharted film starring him would be like. Instead we got Tom Holland. I love the guy, but he's not Nathan Drake. And Mark Wahlburg as Sully?! *FUUUUUUCCCCKKKK NOOOOOOO.*
Nathan Fillion’s short movie was actually more like the game and the character. It was excellent. Even the way the camera panned into the gun battle towards the end much the same as the game was an excellent addition
Apparently they made the excuse that Fillion was too old, boo. I think Tom Holland is a cool guy but he doesn't seem to have much range, unfortunately.
I'm a big Fillion fan but he absolutely was too old by then. It had to be made closer to the first game's release.
Load More Replies...Let's be honest. There are SO MANY roles that Nathan Fillion is perfect for but has never been allowed to play.
I still mourn the ignominious death of Firefly.
Load More Replies...Fillion dodged a bullet with this trash film. I don't think even he could've saved it, at least not in the direction they went with it.
Nathan Fillion should be given every role he wants, in perpetuity. That man is a national treasure.
I'm curious to know who you all would have wanted to play Sully. I think Bruce Campbell would have been great!
Not that iconic but that girl who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter movies. One of my fave female characters diminished to a dumbed down wallflower. Zero chemistry with Radcliffe.
I think it was more the role and direction than Bonnie Wright's acting and talent but agree the casting could've been better.
I think it's more to do with the writing - we never got to see any of the sassy, tomboy, book version of Ginny in the movies, after all. Bonnie did the best she could with dumbed-down writing of her character.
Not really her fault. The writers and directors absolutely butchered her character. She did the best she could do with the garbage she was given.
I disagree, I feel she was right for the role but that the role was poorly written for the screen 😊
Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Maybe because I liked Rebecca Romijn’s portrayal, but JL didn’t seem right in that role.
I thought she did great. It was set decades earlier so I assumed Mystique became the strong, confident version with time and experience. Having her be a bit less confident wasn’t bad. It shows her growth.
Given that Mystique is at least 300 years old (she was born sometime in the early 1700s) and has been a very, very sophisticated spy and assassin for most of those years, nah. Having her be "less confident" because the movie was set in the 1970s was bad.
Load More Replies...Romijn's version was lithe and agile, Lawrence showed none of that grace.
Why would someone down vote this? It's a perfectly valid opinion just like anyone else's.
Load More Replies...this version of Mystique doesn't work, I think she did what she could with this version of the character
Meanwhile, the actors should genuinely listen to their co-stars, observe their body language, and react to their performances as naturally as possible. Pre-rehearsing reactions can do more harm than good in some cases. Instead, the very best actors allow themselves to be vulnerable in order to connect with their colleagues on screen. This helps draw the audience in, as the viewers empathize with the characters more.
The entertainment expert told Bored Panda that it's key for actors to step into their characters' shoes. "Actors can build a strong backstory, delve into the character's psychology, and use techniques like method acting to truly inhabit the role," he said. Moreover, actors can train their voices and practice their physical and facial expressions to craft a more believable performance.
Not exactly an iconic role but Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York. Every else nailed it (especially Day Lewis) but she stuck out like a sore thumb.
Acting-wise, she just wasn't in the same league as everyone else.
Hence she doesn't get any work anymore, we all woke up to the fact she can't act.
Her acting in the movie My Sister's Keeper was amazing
Load More Replies...Well, to be fair, it's not like her character was even required for the story. Just a filler.
She wasn't horrible in that movie but yeah, it could have been better. It's one of my favorites and DDL was amazing.
Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. No way he’s a child of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher!
I know that some people looks like copies of their parents, but a child is never 50/50, there are others family members. Maybe Kylo Ren looked like Leia great grandfather and Han' third cousin ? We'll never know, but I think he was great in his role.
Kids usually have SOMETHING that resemble their parents, even if they have a trait that "skipped a generation" (baldness, eye color, etc.) (Now that I think of it, he does have a vague Heyden Christenson thing going on.) His story was so absurdly under-developed that I don't think ANYONE could have pulled it off, but his character utterly sucked. I don't like obvious fan service (like writing R2-D2, C-3PO, Chewbacca, etc., into the prequels), but can we get some directors and scriptwriters who don't absolutely hate the originals they write sequels/prequels/reboots of?
Load More Replies...Nah. I thought he was great in that role. It's asinine to whine about casting just because you don't think he physically looks enough like the other actors to be their kid. As if looking similar is more important than talent and ability. You can argue he wasn't right for the role though but this role depended on the performance not the looks.
Hmm... yes and no. I think there should be at least some similarity to the actors playing the parents. Even people who aren't clones of their parents still tend to have some features that are similar. Same colour hair, same eyes, same nose... something. That said, I think he still looked ok in the role.
Load More Replies...I don't understand why people like him so much. The character was written almost as a whiny teenager and he really doesn't fit that. He's too old looking to have the tantrums Kylo has. I agree he doesn't look like the OG characters' child, but the biggest problem for me was just the whole character. Either he's younger or he needs to be more like Vader. Veneer of control.
I didn't really have a problem with that. I did feel like it jumped too quickly from him being trusted apprentice to Luke to insane madman though. But, when you're dealing with magic (*koff* the force) you can justify that by saying the Sith were influencing his thoughts.
Load More Replies...I think it's more the writting of the character than the actor that makes it seem an unfitting choice, less whinny wannabe Sith and more of an actual dangerous threat would have been more fitting for him maybe. Good thing though: He did the reasonable thing and denyied playing in any other Star Wars movie, because let's be honest that's a career killer by now
The idiots who took over for George Lucas wanted the Julliard trained actor, regardless of how awful the casting or the writing. There has never been a worse corruption of a property than those three movies from the unholy trinity of Kennedy, Abrams & Johnson.
I don’t blame Abrams or Johnson. Kathleen Kennedy is 100% the problem. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have come close to parting with Star Wars because of Kennedy limits on their creativity.
Load More Replies...This! He didn't have screen presence. I kept thinking who is this whinny little emo kid and where's the big baddy. Also Daisy Ridley sucked a*s and I never found myself caring about anything she did.
Oh God this! I wouldn't watch him for the longest time because I hated him in this role. I'm glad I finally watched him, he's an amazing actor. This part couldn't have been more wrong for him.
I'll admit I did think "he did not get those ears from his parents", but Adam Driver is an amazing actor and who the f**k cares.
Keanu Reeves in *Bram Stoker's Dracula* I love Keanu, but he was terrible in that role.
I think his casting adds to this absolute fever dream of film. Like, Keanu as Harker? LETS GET WEIRD WITH IT. Why not? lmao
Keanu does better in roles where he doesn’t actually have to have chemistry with other actors. I actually really like him, but the way he speaks comes across very strange compared to others. I think he was super miscast in Much Ado About Nothing, especially standing alongside the likes of Emma Thompson and Denzel Washington.
When his character in Much Ado About Nothing says, “I am a man of few words,” I yelled, “Thank God!”
Load More Replies...Definitely agree with this one. He can do certain roles really well. This wasn't one of them.
That's what made the movie great. I love this movie because of Keanu!
I have to agree, though in his defense, he was cast next to Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins, so that made his lousy performance stand out even worse.
Francis Ford Coppola has spoken out about this and said that he was forced by the studios to put Keanu in the role because he was 'hot' then. FFCoppola didn't want to as he knew KR was wrong for the part, and especially up against the great Gary Oldman, KR couldn't match up in any way. I mean the guy is good for John Wick, but heavy dramatic roles like this one in Dracula should be off limits to him.
There’s enough pressure to cast roles correctly as it is. But when you think about the possibility that the movie might turn into a multi-sequel-and-decade-spanning franchise, it can paralyze you. Luckily, movie industry professionals have a lot of experience and know how to handle this type of pressure well.
While it’s useful to think about the future, you need to focus on the present. If you only ever worry about potential problems that might pop up in the future, you might miss the issues and opportunities that are happening right under your nose. Unless you’ve signed a contract to make a bunch of sequels already, simply focus on the project and story you have in front of you right now.
Topher Grace as Venom.
Miswritten rather than miscast. Grace was ideal for the role as it was created in the film - it’s just that it shouldn’t have been written as a ‘dark’ Tobey Maguire but closer to the comic portrayal - an embittered ‘roid monster.
Eddie Brock basically *was* an edgelord version of Peter Parker in the earliest venom comics. He didn't really change that much for quite a long time.
Load More Replies...He was bad in Predators as well. I don't think I've been impressed by any of his performances.
Harry Potter’s mom. She’s in like 4 brief blurry flashbacks, can’t you find a red head with blue eyes? (I know it’s green in the book but to match Radcliffe with all the “your mothers eyes” comments).
This is one where the way the person's looks are more important because it's an integral part of the story and because the role itself isn't very much. The actor doesn't really have much to do. At least, in my opinion.
Assuming the guy in the picture above is supposed to be Harry's father he looks to me like he could be Radcliffe's Dad. He looks like a good choice.
Load More Replies...That's because they cast Alan Rickman as Snape and had to make the other actors match his age. An older Snape and younger Marauders + Lily wouldn't have made sense since they all went to school together and were supposed to be close in age.
Load More Replies...Because red hair itself is so rare (<1%), and blue is also rare?
Load More Replies...Well, as we can see the pictures had a filter that removes colours and we never see clearly her eyes so...
I think they meant the Prince's tale bit with young Lily where you can clearly see her brown eyes. The adult actress has pale eyes as can be seen in the same flashbacks before she dies, which makes even less sense.
Load More Replies...Considering that only 0.17% of the world's population have red hair and blue eyes, yeah, it would have been a hell of a challenge.
Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen. People hate on the movies for a lot of valid reasons, but I *constantly* hear “Kristin was so awkward” and nothing about how awful Rob did. Bella is supposed to be awkward. Edward is supposed to be smooth as f**k. The entire movie felt uncomfortable because Robert played Edward really awkward and miserable. I don’t think replacing him would have fixed the movie, but it certainly would have helped with the overall tone.
And so was Robert Pattison as he said once in an interview
Load More Replies...That entire movie was a train wreck. “This is the skin of a killer, Bella!” *proceeds to sparkle like an unicorn. 🦄 *
should've been "this is the skin of a diamond, Bella!" *scene cuts to a sparkly Edward promoting his skincare brand*
Load More Replies...I remember reading an interview where he circled all the instances in the book where Edward smiled, or was more friendly, and was basically told to knock it off on threat of being fired. He's an excellent actor, the script/directing/everything else was just *so bad*
The scene where he meets Charlie and he’s so awkward? He’s hundreds of years old and bulletproof. Even if he’s stuck with the emotions of a seventeen year old, surely his century of experience with people would make him more smooth and confident. Odd decision by the director.
Load More Replies...He played it exactly as it was written in the books. Edward is a 117 year old virgin. He's awkward as fúck.
This almost has to be a joke submission. No actor could possibly make that story watchable. I will never understand how a book about a 100 year old dude chasing after a high school girl was seen as romantic. Even John Hughes films are less problematic - at least in those, the high school girl's obsessed stalker is the same age.
I found it hilarious. The waxed werewolves, sparkling vampires and the insane dialogues were great fun.
Load More Replies...Hear me out, remake Twilight but the vampires are the ones from What We Do In The Shadows.
No one hated Robert being in those films than Robert. He brings it up a lot that the way the script was written, he had little choice but to portray it the way he did. He said he was instructed to look in pain but it comes off like he's constipated the entire franchise. All the characters are miserable and dramatic because that's how their characters were written.
They were mismatch for sure and what was with that hair on Edward?. He is a throw back from the 1920s but he sports an immature teenage brats hair, only him too, no one else.
as she avoids the fact she named her child what is essentially the equivalent of a fandom's ship name of her mother and her mother in law.
Load More Replies...The simple fact is that good actors are great for the movie business. The more skilled an actor is, the more they can make their character believable. They draw the audience in. They get them to suspend their disbelief. They get them fully immersed in the story. Though a great actor probably cannot salvage a bad script and cheesy dialogue, they can still give a memorable performance and help elevate the overall quality of the project.
Meanwhile, an actor who’s a team player and has a likable personality can add a lot to the team beyond their performance on the set. They can share their experience and give some friendly advice to newcomers in the movie industry. Meanwhile, they can use their authority to motivate their fellow cast members as well!
Ben Affleck as an older, bitter, more violent Batman in Batman V Superman.
Should have been Karl Urban.
Totally agree. I was prepared to loathe Affleck but thought he did a pretty good job with it.
Load More Replies...I was much more disappointed by Gal Gadot as a wonder woman. She is an adorable actress, I really like her smile and her expressions, but I would have preferred a wonder woman much more impressive and without heels :D
They should have have just gone back to the best Batman, the original, Michael Keaton. If Keaton couldn't handle all the stunts, They do have stunt men. But I think he did pretty good in the spider man movie.
Eh. . he was polarizing, but I actually didn't mind his take on Bats. I was actually looking forward to the solo Batman film he had planned and cancelled.
Batfleck was great! Not as good as Keaton, obviously, but certainly better than Kilmer and Clooney.
and yet i see ben affleck as old, bitter, and violent...but mostly bloated....
Titanic in my opinion just because kate looked like a grown adult next to leo who looked like a teen.
Yes, Leonardo Di Caprio was not the Jack we wanted, it was like watching a woman having an affair with a teenager, just icky.
leo is a YEAR OLDER than kate in real life....just b/c he doesn't date women over 25 doesn't make him younger....
Not incredibly iconic from an American perspective (perhaps moreso in Europe), but Cara Delvigne was so over the top awful in Valerian and City of a Thousand Planets that it just destroyed the movie. The dude who played Valerian was a bit better, but not much. I wanted them both to just. stop. talking.
Both were miscast and had ZERO chemistry. And who casts Dane Dehaan as an action hero?!?! lmaooo
Yeah, for people supposedly in love they didn't seem that into it :P It's a pity the movie didn't do better though. I'd love to have seen more stories in that universe. On a different note, man there was some gaping plot holes in that movie.
Load More Replies...Havent seen it for that reason, i loooved the comic when i was kid, still do ;)
Load More Replies...The comics were interesting and trippy, but the film leads were wooden planks. The best bit was Rutger Hauer as the earth president.
I have never seen such bad acting from both of them in my entire life. Destroyed the film.
That movie was so bad, that my spouse and I left in the last 15 minutes. Right at the height of the plot and action. We just never cared about the characters or story.
They both looked FAR too young for the ranks they held. There is NO WAY you become a bird colonel in your late 20s and early 30s.
In terms of (nearly) perfect casting decisions, we have to go with Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy, as well as Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in 'The Devil Wears Prada.'
But what roles do you think were extremely well cast, dear Pandas? On the flip side, what roles do you personally believe completely missed the mark for you and why?
Tell us all about it in the comments.
Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genesys.
Michael Biehn took inspiration from Polish resistance fighters in preparing for the role, and he was a shell-shocked, somewhat emaciated veteran.
Nevermind that. Let's hire some beefed-up lughead who would be on the cover of Men's Health, and would honestly be better cast as a Terminator.
There were only two Terminator movies. Everything else was a bad fever dream and I will die on that hill.
I quite enjoyed the series - until they cut them off...

I don’t care if it isn’t out yet, i’ve seen all the trailers and chris pratt as mario is just wrong. some actors just aren’t meant to be good voice actors and chris pratt is one of them. he doesn’t sound like mario, he just sounds like chris pratt.
When I found out he's now also the voice of Garfield I quipped that "one day they will make an animated biopic about me. The lead role of Katie will be voiced by Chris Pratt".
HE'S GARFIELD NOW?! Absolutely not! What the heII, Hollywood?!
Load More Replies...I really do agree, Chris Pratt is known for many characters whether animated or live-action, but...I feel like he didn't even try for this movie. Jack Black though, now he absolutely NAILED Bowser.
To be fair, Jack Black always sounds like Jack Black too. And I didn't mind Pratt in the role either.
Load More Replies...How far back is BP reaching for these posts? This movie will be a year old in 2 days....
This is from a year old reddit thread, posted two days before the film released.
Load More Replies...THANK YOU!! I ABSOLUTELY HATED THE FACT THEY DID THAT… and not to mention there was no Italian accent… I WAS SUPER ANGRY
Apparently unpopular opinion: this movie sucked. Of course, I'm an old guy, but I can still appreciate quality kids' movies, especially connecting so well with my own kid. But this movie was as much fun as watching someone else play a Mario Party game.
When I first heard the trailer, I absolutely hated it. Once the movie came out I heard him, and I don't completely mind him.
Chris Pratt and Seth Rogen I would say - Chris doesn't sound like MArio and Seth can't voice act
Idris Elba is one of my favorite actors, and was faaaar from the main problem with The Dark Tower, but swapping him and McConaughey would have made a lot of sense to me. I feel like they’d have been a lot better in one another’s roles. McConaughey is an easier sell as a cowboy and I have seen enough to know that Elba will knock any bad guy character out of the park.
That entire film had so many issues, honestly the casting was the least of its problems. It completely missed the mark for the book series.
It's hard to get away from the illustrations in the first two books of the series where it's clearly a young Clint Eastwood in mind for Roland. I think perhaps Michael Fasbender could have done it more in line?
Or Scott Eastwood who is the spitting image of his dad. I like McConaughey as the villain though.
Load More Replies...That movie needs to be scrapped and started over and take the series seriously. The script BARELY tried to gather our Ka- Tet. They ignored the rose and Eddies addiction. And didn't even explain Roland's lineage and survivor training and skills similar to a knight of old. We need Steven King to pull a Stan Lee and get control of the directing. The whole story is supposed to be a MASSIVE tale of terror, sacrifices and crushing regret.
I love love the books. I refuse to watch that movie. The cast is dead wrong for it
The whole film was a sh*t show. We lost main characters too. Why they didn’t just make it a series with perhaps one book for each season is beyond me. Annnnd… I thought Roland was supposed to look a bit like Stephen King. I’m sure I read that. I hope I’m not making it up due to old lady brain. 😬
He was supposed to look like a mix of Stephen King himself and Clint Eastwood - because of the cowboy image of his when the series were first written
Load More Replies...I'm currently reading the series (haven't seen the film & probably won't) & while I want so badly to imagine Idris as the gunslinger, I just can't do it....in my mind, he's a mix of Gerard Butler (for the bright blue eyes), Sam Elliott (for his smooth, scruffy, cowboy-ish persona & age) & Jason Statham (for the fighting skills acting-wise & gravelly voice).
If it had been filmed some years back I could see Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Roland’s role but I think he might be a bit too old now unfortunately.
Load More Replies...I went into this movie with low expectations and was still disappointed. He was definitely not right for the role, and I do like him, though I thought MM did pretty good. It's not even just the look, the whole vibe was wrong, but also when there is so much emphasis on the looks of a character in a book, it's a pretty big distraction to go in the complete opposite direction.
Exactly! The whole vibe is wrong, and it's pretty distracting to pick an actor that doesn't look anything like the vast description of the character, and I'm stating this at risk of sounding racist. It has nothing to do with race but the fact that King explicitly stated IN THE BOOKS that Roland is a carbon copy of his

Robert Langdon in The DaVinci code was awfully miscast. He should have been played by Sam Neill.
Yeah but...it's Tom Hanks. He could be cast as Cleopatra and I wouldn't complain at all.
Just for fun, try watching the DaVinci code after Forrest Gump (and get back to me, please... I can't bring myself to watch the DaVinci code.)

Jamie, what's his face as Christian grey. Wrong guy.
Ian somerholder would have been better.
Dakota Johnson wasn’t a much better choice either. They were both awful, and no chemistry between them is an understatement - their intense dislike for each other was palpable.
i heard in order to get through their scenes together they were basically drunk the entire time. not sure if its true but if their acting is anything to g off of, i can see why people thought that
Load More Replies...In my head he always looked like Christian Bale. I know that he would never take a role like that, but imagine how much it would have sizzled if he'd brought his brand of intensity to this sort of role.
I haven't read the book or saw the movie and as the movie came out, I asked a friend who saw it: Is it better than "Deep Throat"? She didn't get the joke. Sad. ;)
@rizzo: to answer your question, not even close. 50 Shits of Gross makes DT look like an oscar winner.
Load More Replies...I read the first book and instantly imagined Matt Bomer, and I have just watched like one episode of White Collar, but in my brains, Christian Grey looked like him.
Didn't read the books, didn't watch the movie but just looking at his "good neighbour boy" face says he was dreadfully miscast
He played a Serial Killer in the BBC series The Fall and he did it well. This was just a terrible movie based on a terrible book that started life as a Twilight fan fic.
Load More Replies...Does anyone really think that ANY casting choice is going to elevate the terrible source material? Those books were literally twilight fan fiction. A more apt name for the series would have been "Virgin - The trilogy"
My go to for this question is Samuel L Jackson as Mace Windu. I love the guy, but ‘wise calm monk’ is perhaps the worst role he could ever be cast for. It runs exactly counter to his skills as an actor.
Nah, have to respectfully disagree. Samuel L. Jackson could play Mother Theresa and he’d still rock it, especially if he said “m**********r.”
Samuel Jackson can't be bad, he can either be awesome, or comedically awesome.
Load More Replies...Completely disagree! Allow me to get my nerd on 🤓 Mace Windu was a Jedi Master that danced the fine line between the Light and Dark side of the force. His signature technique was to reflect the dark side energy of his opponent back at them! Samuel L Jackson fit that role PERFECTLY
I have to wonder how much of the extra characterisation of Mace Windu was based on him being played by SLJ. They needed to create a Jedi who might conceivably just turn round and cuss everyone out, just because he was played by SLJ. He wasn't really played that way on screen though, which is a loss to the franchise as a whole. Even in The Clone Wars, he wasn't used to his full potential.
Load More Replies...Mace Windu was never a "wise, calm monk". As a jedi he constantly flirted with the dark side of the force, was aggressive, quick to act and enjoyed direct confrontation over diplomacy. Samuel L Jackson filled the role perfectly.
I disagree completely. Jackson acted the s**t out of those scenes. It did help that I was in my early teens and hadn't seen him in anything else yet, but he was one of the better parts of those movies. Along with Ewan and Liam.
It's genius casting. It also probably ranks in as SLJ's top two or three favorite roles.
Robin Williams turned out to be an amazing dramatic actor. If someone who is so well known for not needing a script for a comedy can pull off the dramatic roles he did, SLJ can pull off a wise monk.
I'm not a particular SLJ fan (and not a hater either), but I think his Windu was pretty good. What it wasn't was the sort of thing you expect out of him. It shows he has more range than we might expect.
Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone. My god that movie was painful. Please for all that is good and pure just watch "Whatever Happened to Miss Simone" and bask in its greatness. One of the best documentaries ever.
"The black woman isn't good enough to play a black woman" - silliness. It's all so tiring.
Chloe Grace Moretz as Carrie in the 2013 remake comes to mind.
I agree it's not her fault, but the topic is miscasting. She's unironically too pretty for the role; Carrie is supposed to be ugly and unpleasant. The movie adaptations have made her kinda pretty, at least compared to her overweight version of the book, but Chloe is a literal model, from a rich family of models.
Load More Replies...Another movie that never needed to be remade. Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie and everyone else killed it in the original, why redo it?
Wouldn't watch the movie. In the promotional material, Chloe Grace Moretz looks like goth actual Homecoming Queen. Don't get me wrong, she's too young for an old guy like me to leer at under any circumstance, but they seemed to be trying to make her into some sort of hottie. It's just so different from Sissy Spacek, who was unconventionally pretty but also awkward looking. Spacek seemed to teeter on the edge of pretty and awkward, fitting the role of someone who would have a hard time believing the cool guy wanted to bring her to the prom, but also that she could win prom queen... or be set up by *everyone* for a cruel prank.
A remake should have not been made, the original is just too unbelievably good.
There also exists a sequel (The Rage: Carrie 2) from 1999. A bit campy but great for what it is.
Load More Replies...Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby. I know people love his performance, but the fact that LEO played him kind of detracts and distract from the elusive mysterious nature the character puts off. Should have cast an unknown in the role, and put Leo in as Nick.
As much as I love Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, I think another Canadian should have played the Green Lantern in the live-action adaptation: Nathan Fillion.
If you’re gonna have Nathan Fillion play any Marvel character, Wonderman would actually be a really good role…
Load More Replies...You're in luck then. Fillion is going to play Green Lantern on the upcoming Superman movie. Well, not Hal Jordan but Guy Garder, but still...
I feel like one of the only people who genuinely thought the deadpool movie was awful. there was like.. 2 funny jokes, the rest was just pointless sex flashbacks and cringe. So I didn't bother watching the sequel. :/
Tom Hanks as Col. Tom Parker in the recent Elvis movie.
Agree. I wasn't entirely sure about watching the film but he made me interested and stay through it.
Load More Replies...Austin Butler, though... godDAMN. Absolutely incredible performance.
Russell Crowe in Les Miserables, Robert Redford in Barefoot in the Park and I will say it, Barbara Streisand in Yentil.
Strongly disagree: I think he made a very good Javert (I also love that character).
The acting was fine for Javert, the singing was atrocious and, since this is a musical, made the character unwatchable for me
Load More Replies...Robert Redford in Barefoot in the Park?! He originated the role on Broadway and is freakin hilarious and perfect as Paul in the movie. This person is dumb
Right? I don't know about dumb, but definitely wrong.
Load More Replies...“Stars” has to be one of the most haunting and powerful songs in Les Mis, and he just didn’t have the vocal chops for it.
Barbara Streisand was, if nothing else, far too old for the role of Yentl. The music was good (for her), but it was very hard to immerse myself into that world. She just didn't fit.
Compared to Eddie "Kermit the Frog" Redmayne, Crowe was a masterful choice.
The only redeeming part of Crowe's role was the satisfying splat sound he made when he fell off the Pont-au-Change. And I love me some Crowe when he's right (i.e. Master and Commander).
Russell Crowe is awful when he plays in English movies. I saw him in Master and Commander, he couldn't pull off the English Gentleman role, his character was not authentic. Excellent movie but for him. They should have gotten an English actor. Rickman would have been wonderful.
Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Don't get me wrong: she was astonishing in the role, like she was in every role she played. But I agree that it should've been Marilyn Monroe in the part.
Capote has envisaged Monroe when writing the story, and the screenplay was originally written specifically for her in the role. However she turned down the role after being told it would be bad for her image, and Hepburn was cast instead. However agree I don't think she was miscast here, she made the role her own and would have been a different movie with Monroe in it
Load More Replies...Came here to say that. One of the most offensive and racist portrayals of a character ever
Load More Replies...I couldn't imagine this role not being Hepburn, tbh. Though it's sad to think that Marilyn died only a year after this film released from an overdose (probable suicide) so it makes you wonder what could have changed if she had been the one in the role.
Really you mention Breakfast at Tiffany's and went for Hepburn as the wrong choice. No mention of Mickey Rooney!!
Can't bear the film personally as Holly Golightly's combination of provocative, brittle and helpless reminds me of my mother. Hepburn brought a different style of fragility to the role from Monroe, which is fine, but with Monroe it would have been clearer that she's a call girl, rather than a single girl about town who just needs a regular guy to look after her.
Absolutely not! No one could have done that role better. The real problem in that movie was Micky Rooney's Mr Yunioshi performance. Ms.Hepburn was perfection.
I do agree with some of the above but I don’t see them as bad actors, just that the roles weren’t fitting for them. If I’m to add to this list I’ll definitely add the whole damn Percy Jackson franchise. The two movies that were produced were such a flop that the series fans refused to even acknowledge they exist. Then last year they announced a TV series and I went crazy on hearing this. I’m an adult now but I was such a diehard fan of the Percy Jackson books growing up that it was all I spoke about for years to the point that I lost some friends. Then I saw the trailer for the series. Finally they got the actors ages right, but, I’m sorry their appearances don’t match the book descriptions at all. Watched the series with much apathy only to be proven that it’s so much worse than the previous movie attempts. How hard was it for producers to find actors that fit the character descriptions?! Guess I’ll never see my favorite book series being adapted correctly for a movie/series.
Most of the cast of Alexander but especially Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie. Having the cast speak with Irish accents because Colin couldn't hide his Irish accent was so bizarre. Not to mention the bleach blonde hair and Angelina playing his mother with a Russian? accent. She is also clearly the same age as him and they made no effort to age her. Couldn't they find any actors from Greece or Macedonia?
Bella Ramsey as Ellie in "The Last of Us" - I'd say it's 50/50 her acting and the writting of the role, but they really should have got another actress to play that role.
RUSSELL CROWE IN LES MISERABLES!!! I've said it before and I'll say it again. Horrible as Javert. Anyone else would have been better.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the guy who played Peeta in The Hunger Games. He was atrocious. And the least convincible blond since Tom Felton. ;)
