When my parents were renovating our house themselves in 1979 after purchasing it, they consulted friends who were electricians, carpenters, etc. These people in the picture were dumb.

Feel sorry for the neighbours if that lot collapses onto their house, as it appears to be doing.

I think that actually might be an attached garage, that belongs to the collapsed house.

I live in a second floor suite. The owners of the suite below me decided they needed more light in the one bedroom. They took out the wall and replaced it with glass bricks. They did not get their renovation approved before starting work. The glass wall was noticed from outside by the condo president who said. "that must be put back the way it was, that is a loadbearing wall." I guess I'm lucky my suite didn't collapse with 2 renos that first removed the load bearing wall and then replaced it.

Saw this one happen with a small church near where I lived. They were built in an old store that had previously been partitioned. One of the past owners had removed the central load bearing wall, and replaced it with a beam and series of poles to support everything. That was fine, until the church were renovating and decided the poles didn't look good with their new, more open and airy design, so they removed them. About a day later, the roof caved in.

Brightspeed installer wanted to drill rather than use an existing (too large) hole that is already there. I told him that one, where he wants to drill is 6 feet below ground. 2, I'm not having a wire running up a wall in a finished room and 3, that wall is close to 2 feet thick, his 8" bit ain't gonna work. He used the existing hole.

When The Contractor Quits And Leaves You Without A Kitchen For Months

Home improvement fails: partially renovated kitchen with exposed walls and unfinished cabinets.

Long story short, the kitchen designer I worked with at Home Depot referred me to a contractor that I assumed worked for Home Depot. He conned me into paying cash up front and took off with my money. I was left without a kitchen and have 3 small children. It was absolute hell.

When I contacted Home Depot, they said that their worker was not supposed to refer me to the contractor because he, in fact, didn’t work for them and was just one of their valued customers. They told me they can’t be held liable. I explained that regardless if the worker wasn’t supposed to do it they still did and I am without money or a kitchen now. Home Depot did not care. I don't know if this worker had a side deal with the "contractor" or what was going on.

I ended up having to build my own kitchen, my mom helped me but that was the most stressful 2 months of my life. Yes I have all proof and will be taking the con artist contractor and Home Depot to small claims court.

The sale contract you sign when you purchase something like cabinets, also includes terms and conditions that expressly say that you absolve the company from any liability should an independent contractor fail to complete the job, or cause damage to your property. OP didn't read the contract it seems. It's also not fine print, it's written in bold just above where you sign. Court will toss that case against the store.

Wouldn't it be nice to buy a home and never have it upgrade and renovate it? It would definitely save us the cash and the hassle, that's for sure! As 59% of American homes were built before 1980, Zippia averages that people renovate their homes every three to five years. When we say "renovate" here, we mean minor upgrades, like painting.

If people have lived in their house for more than six years, they're more likely to do renovations than to just move to another place. People do major upgrades like whole room remodels less often, and the main reasons for that are either lack of time or money.

I fell though a ceiling at a college. I was a student and working there part time. I installed the wiring for their local network. (It was before the internet became common). I was doing the wiring when I fell through a suspended ceiling and landed on a professor's desk (who fortunately was not in the office). I didn't get seriously injured, didn't get fired, got the work done, and eventually graduated.

I think something like that would be hilarious as a decoration. Instead of patching the hole, they should find the most realistic mannequin or animal leg they can find and put it up there, or stick an animal snout, like it's looking down, then put an identifying placard up there like it's a work of art.

if you're not gonna bother with a roller at least get a decent brush and take the time to make it look decent. There's a reason people use rollers - it's much quicker to get the walls done with a smooth look. Though smooth walls are attainable with a decent enough brush and patience, though. But why bother when you can use a roller? o.O

In the same survey, 50% of the respondents said they intended to do home renovations themselves. At the same time, 56% said they would hire a professional to do at least a part or all the home improvements. The most sought-after professionals are electricians and general contractors.

People renovate their homes not only for themselves; they're also thinking about the value of their house. In that sense, the renovations that give the biggest yields are those done to the kitchen. Minor kitchen upgrades yield a return of up to 96%, while major upgrades yield around a 50% return on investment.

Sometimes, I think I'm lucky not to own a home yet. How do people even know when it's time for an upgrade? For example, when do your walls need repainting? The experts at PaintRite Pros write that repainting walls should be a job you do every five years at least. Hallways and corridors suffer the most as they get scuff marks, fingerprints, and other daily wear and tear.

He removed the old cabinets, sink etc. Cleaned, brought in wood and a new sink and pipes, and did it all from scratch. He made all the drawers and cabinet doors by hand. He was a master carpenter. Years later, in another house, my Mom remodeled her kitchen the same way and did a beautiful job, especially considering she'd never done it before and had only ever watched her father do it.

Experts claim that homeowners should also make minor bathroom improvements every five years. This includes painting the walls, updating cabinet finishes, fixtures, and lighting. The carpet is another thing you should replace more often. Although some carpets can last up to 15 years, experts recommend addressing heavy traffic areas like hallways, doorways, and stairs every five years or so.

I went to fit carpet in a guys lounge and as I walked in he said, I'm just fixing some floorboards and started smacking 6 inch nails into the floor. Before I could say have you checked for pipes, he hit one. Went back a few days later to do the job.

my dad replaced a loose floorboard once and somehow nailed into an old water pipe. which resulted in both the replacement of the pipe, and several more floorboards as well as having to deal with the resulting damp from the leak.... it's surprisingly easy done. xP but for some reason in my family, if household things go wrong, 90% of the time it's plumbing/water based. It's a curse, I'm telling y'all. My shower has started leaking into the room below and I can't figure out how. the shower tray is sealed properly afaik, so I'm guessing it's a problem with the pipes below but heck if i can afford having the entire thing removed to find out...

Drill? Unless that wall is block or concrete, there's no reason to be using a drill. Second, wires and pipes are required to be a minimum of 1 1/2" from the face of the stud so either someone did work without a permit, inspector never saw the work or she's using a drill/screw far too long.

Doesn't matter what you use to make the ceiling, it's only as strong as the nails or screws holding it. Want strong? My sons 1920 bungalow had lathe and plaster ceilings. Rather than go to all the work and mess of ripping them down, we covered them with 5/8" furniture grade plywood held in place with 3" ceramic coated screws. His ceilings ain't going nowhere. Why the furniture grade plywood? Where he worked he got it for $5 a sheet. We bought 3 whole bundles.

People, walk on the 2× 4's or 2 × 6s. Not on the ceilings. This is why people fall through the ceiling.

Depending on the space between the framing joists (wood boards) you should not have to step on the plasterboard which is not strong enough to hold a person's weight. If the ceiling was installed over widely separated joists, it could be a problem but if you want to walk up in the attic/ceiling, you should put in plywood crosswalks so this does not happen.

If you don't have carpeted floors and have hardwood instead, you should upgrade them every 10 years. That means sanding them down and applying a new finishing coat. I have some personal experience with that, as we redid the wood floors in our family house a few years ago. The sanding machine is loud and can be quite hard to operate because it's so heavy, but the result is totally worth it. More so because you did it yourself!

We didn’t do the greatest job but it was better than that! When my mom bought her first little house when I was almost 40 I had learned my lesson and watched a lot of home improvement shows. I directed the painting. There was a lot of yelling but it turned out beautiful! Painting isn’t that hard if you are patient and take other people’s advice. And don’t cheap out.

My grandfather and his father before him were housepainters by trade. I think I inherited a talent for this by osmosis or something. I did a good job, painting the ceiling in my bedroom in my previous apartment, management didn't mind as they were renovating apartments between tenants. Which I knew, or I wouldn't have done it.

I'm torn on this one. Part of me sees how they went in circles around the light switch, and I'm imagining a slightly more transparent paint done in expanding circles for the whole room. The other part of me is looking to the right of the door. There's an almost abstract cubism going on, and it makes me want to thin the paint way down, then dow overlapping rectangles and cubes, so it's a very light, soft brown with shadows of overlap. I think if done right, it could have a very calming effect on the room. Put in light beige shag carpet and do the door in matching beige, and you'd have an effect.

Experts also recommend replacing your water heater every 10 years. At this point, most of the systems start to decline in quality after 12 or so years, so when you hit that decade milestone, it's a good time to start thinking about a new one. If a water heater starts producing murky water, leaking, rusting, or producing odd sounds, those are signals to replace it too.

The dishwasher is another appliance that loses its full efficiency at 10 years old. Experts say that if the costs of the repair exceed 50% of the appliance's original cost, it's not really worth repairing. If it's more than 10 years old, just go for a new one; you'll have to eat out of the plates and bowls that it washes, after all.

So yeah, I have to cut your drawers out like this, but, I at least box them in and make them look as factory as possible. Just don't use that cowboy who mangled that vanity. 🤭 I would have checked the clearance before actually installing the dishwasher. They need a different style of dishwasher that doesn't have a protruding handle.

If you had it installed after the cabinets, your loss for not checking to see if it would clear. If it was part of a total renovation, they are liable for not checking to see if it would clear.

The repairs and renovations experts advise doing every 15 years are more serious and costly. They include partially remodeling your kitchen, replacing the central AC, and the asphalt shingles on your roof. The kitchen will likely be the most costly of the three, as some estimates claim a mid-range kitchen remodel would cost around $20,000.

I had a beautiful beveled glass round coffee table. When my kid was around 9, he tripped and his phone fell onto the glass. It shattered in huge shards. When I walked into the living room, I almost had a heart attack. A large shard of glass was sitting on way too close to the femoral artery. I very calmly (on the outside) told him to not move while I cleaned up the glass. It could have killed him. No more glass furniture for us and a new phobia for me

I've had glass cooktops for more than 30 years. Never had any trouble. Most issues are caused by human error. Woman I worked with shattered hers when she wiped it off with a cold wet rag immediately after turning it off. She couldn't understand why it broke.

This appears to be a ceramic hob oven, mine is the same. I can't afford brand new things especially things such as kitchen appliances. I got mine secondhand, it had passed the safety checks so they could sell it and I also asked my Housing Association (UK) to check that it was okay with fitting etc too. All fine. These are great, so easy to clean but if you have one? You can buy safety tops for them so something like this doesn't happen. Have a shop/look around online. Some even double up your work space if like me? You've a small kitchen.

this is why I opted for a seperate hob to my oven, it's set into the counter with the oven underneath that, so as long as it measures the same I should be fine with any brand. I hope. :')

Most salons charge $50&up for a frosting.

When your lovely home becomes 20 years old, it's time for some serious improvements to the outside of the house. This includes replacing the gutters, windows, and wooden fencing. One thing inside the house you should upgrade every 20 years is the light switches. At that point, they'll probably have discoloration and be loose or wiggly. Time to shop for some new ones!

It's just drywall. Just did a 4' x 4' drywall patch and including paint and texture it cost me about 30$ to do. Granted i had the tools already. Last time I used my drywall guy he did multiple patches and textures in a rental house and it only cost me 250$. We have guys step through the ceiling at work 3-4 times a year. Honestly it looks dramatic but it's not that big of a deal.

Has The Tiler Done A Reasonable Job Here?

Poorly aligned kitchen backsplash tiles above a stove, highlighting home improvement fails.

Not sure if I am overreacting to the tiling quality. Having our kitchen done and most of it looks fine but this section just looks wonky and I am pretty disappointed. The guy doing it is a friend who says there is nothing you can do as the wall was not even. Is that really true? This has not been grouted yet. Will it look better after that (it was going to be dark grout).

I'll tell you exactly what's happened here. The tiler's seen the state of the wall underneath, thought 'Im not sorting that out, not my job' and laid all the tiles wonky on top, and when you've noticed, said 'yeah your wall's uneven, nothing anyone can do' hoping you'd buy that. It's easy to smooth a wall out.

As another said, it's not the tiler's fault here. The wall is wonky, and the tiler either went "not my job to fix", or the person taking the photograph had been adamant about sticking to a tight budget, and the tiler just didn't want to deal with the argument they knew would happen. Either way, it's a case of "not my job."

An engineer uses precisely the amount of tape necessary. If the lateral forces due to wind loading + the force necessary to open the door + applicable margins do not exceed the shear strength of 1 thickness of duck tape, then one thickness is enough.

The thing about paint matching, even newly painted. It almost never happens. Even when they scan that bar code from the mix and duplicate it, it is almost always a little off. You can usually get away with just paining the one whole wall, but you'll never just paint a spot and it match.

Standard depth for overhead cabinets is 12". I'll never understand why because now it's almost a guarantee there's going to be more than one thing you want to out up there that's more than 12. We had our custom cabinets made 14" which should be the minimum depth

When I was a kid, we lived in a rented house. The linoleum on the kitchen floor developed a crack, and then a small hole about the size of a quarter, in a high traffic area. We just walked around it for a few days, until one morning when my mother came into the kitchen and found a very large toad sitting close to the hole. Apparently it went though to the crawl space below, and Mr. Toad decided to come up and look around. The landlord was super cheap. He came to fix it. His fix? He screwed an aluminum pie plate over the hole. Not a piece of aluminum cut from the plate. The whole plate. So for the rest of the time that we lived there, we watched guests try to pick the plate up, or kids run through the kitchen and trip over it. Yup, super stupid.

IDK if I'm missing some information from this issue. Who ever put the anchor into the hole prior to the bolt would have to have known that they'd made a horrible mistake. Just drilling into an iron tub would've created a rather distinct noise that would indicate that maybe that's not a good place for an anchor. Am I missing something?

We have a narrow boat, and had a problem with the pump used to pump water from the bath/shower. Had a new one fitted - worked well, but it wasn't till the bilges filled up and soaked the carpet and flooring, that we relaised that they had never connected the pump to the pipe that pumps it out into the canal.....

That's insulation you can see through the window. the scam artist installed the window on the outside, never did anything to the inside.

That’s because the right one open up and thus isn’t the same size. That is normal; or it won’t fit in the framing of the window. What baffles me is that they made a window against a wall or something?

While it is fresh, scoop what you can with a spatula or a dustpan, then with the clean, wet sponge and finally wash with warm water and a mild soap. Wall paint is usually water soluble when wet.

The "Fix" My Plumber Used After Damaging My Bathroom Wall

The "Fix" My Plumber Used After Damaging My Bathroom Wall

During the installation of the soap case and new taps, plumber accidentally drilled into a pipe, causing the wall to flood from the inside. To rectify the situation, it took an extra hour and broken tile which he charged me for. Also, I forgot to mention that he put in this abomination of a tile instead of matching the original design.

Well. The second photograph is clearly far better than the first. But it's really important to remember that even though corners look like they have 90 degree angles, clearly some do not. The person would have been far better working with the actual situation rather than trying to make the situation fit into a right angles.

This pic is BS, the center machine screw was not in the hinge, most likely just holding it for points.. The short screw is a standard hinge screw, and you always put one long wood screw in the jamb side of the hinge to secure it to door framing.

A friend was helping me paint my apartment and she had extra paint left over from when she painted her place the same color, so she brought it with her. She started at one end of the wall, me at the other and we met in the middle. We didn't realize that we had one can of flat and one can of satin finish until we were done and could see it when we stood back to admire our work! LOL! It drove me nuts for the 4 years I lived there, but I was always too broke to buy more paint and too lazy to repaint the place.
