RACE : “Classification category within the human species according to morphological or cultural traits, with no scientific base, and of which the usage is at the foundation of different forms of racism and their practice.” July 13, 2018: The National Assembly has unanimously voted to remove the word “race” from the French constitution. “France is an indivisible, secular, democratic and social Republic. Previously, we were lucky enough to have a chat with Margot Note, an expert archival consultant and founder of Margot Note Consulting LLC. She believes that photography is one of the best ways to record history due to its unparalleled accuracy and immediacy.
"Unlike oral traditions or written records, which are subject to interpretation, memory loss, or bias, photographs provide a direct and detailed representation of a moment in time. This allows future generations to see historical events, people, and places as they truly appeared, offering a level of authenticity and emotional connection that earlier methods may lack," she explained.

Load More Replies...She even went as far as to say that the invention of photography, democratized documentation of history. "Previously, recording history often required specialized skills like writing or artistry, which were limited to certain classes or institutions. Photography, especially with modern technology, enables a broader range of people to document their lives and environments, creating a more inclusive and diverse historical record."

Traditionally, a royal bride places her wedding bouquet on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. This was done by all royal brides since Princess Anne. The last to lay her bouquet was Princess Beatrice in 2020. This is a private event, so there are no pictures of this.
I believe this was started by Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Mother) in 1923 to honor her brother who was lost in WWI
Load More Replies...Interment or entombment. Internment means to be held prisoner, usually for non-criminal reasons.
The title uses the spelling "internment". I don't know if that makes it a different word.
Load More Replies...Traditionally, with the British Unknown Warrior, once the decision is made, all records of the soldier (such as location of discovery, blood type, distinguishing marks on the body, or personal effects) are destroyed to ensure that the soldier remains unknown. DNA testing is forbidden to be performed on the remains, and the coffin has iron strapping welded around it to prevent it from ever being opened again. When the selection happened, four sets of remains were placed in four coffins, and a pair of officers randomly picked the coffin (containing remains obviously) to be used for the ceremony.
When are they going to stop censoring words as if they were taboo? Are there people who can become increasingly stupid?
I have to mention, the right word is "interment". Internment is closer to meaning to imprisonment.
Of course, like with anything, using photography to record the past also has its limitations. “Like earlier methods, it can be selective and influenced by the perspective of the photographer. Despite this, its immediacy, accessibility, and ability to preserve fleeting moments make it a uniquely powerful tool for recording history, complementing rather than entirely replacing earlier methods," Margot said.

Very sobering to think how many of those men never made it back. The people who sent them to war were, of course, happily reclining in their safe and comfortable offices.

Brothers my a**e. My mother, who was born in Florida and raised in South Carolina says that every single one wearing a Confederate Grey uniform should have been tried for treason, and if they were found guilty, then sentenced accordingly. I absolutely concur with her.
What a lovely piece of propaganda! Seriously, you know most of them wiped their hands after shaking with their "brothers."
And pretending the war was not about slavery. Those on the right in gray should still be in prison.
It still astonished me that I knew a Confederate War Widow. Believe it or not, the last one died in 2020.
You may be surprised to learn this, but prior to, and even during the war, it was not at all uncommon for opposing officers to be good friends with their counterparts. Even private soldiers (enlisted today), outside of battle tended to be quite genial with their opposing counterparts. Trade between the two armies, food, coffee, tea, and tobacco primarily, was common. To the point Union soldiers would actively seek out Confederates to trade with, as the Confederates had easy access to good tobacco; while Confederates sought out Union soldiers because they could get tea and real coffee from them. Army officials on both sides knew about this fraternization between the armies, and did little to stop it, recognizing the benefit for morale it had on their forces.
Maybe the officers worried about tea and coffee, the troops were starving.

Meanwhile, her personal favorite photo capturing a historical moment is the first selfie taken by Robert Cornelius in 1839. "This image fascinates me not only for its pioneering technique in photography but also for its deeply human quality—a quiet moment of self-reflection captured in the dawn of photographic history. It’s remarkable to consider that the instinct to document ourselves, our lives, and our essence transcends time and technology. This photograph reminds me that archival work isn’t just about preserving the past; it’s about safeguarding humanity's ongoing story for the future," she told us.
"The Old Samurai", Yokohama, Japan, 1865
Photo by Italian photographer Felice Beato (interesting name, literally means "Happy Blessed"). From Getty: " He lived and worked in Japan from 1862 until about 1885, and dedicated himself to the comprehensive documentation of every aspect of the country, which had newly opened to the West". His studio was destroyed in the Great Fire of Yokohama in 1866. Three years after this photo, the Meji Restoration abolished the Samurai class.
Fun fact: Samurai, pirates, and gunslingers all overlap time wise. Meaning you could make a strange western buddy movie that has Jack Sparrow meeting a Japanese Samurai in America's Wild West.
Oh, but not only that. In the same time span where Pirates, Samurai and Gunslingers were a thing (roughly 1803-1869, Louisiana Purchase to Meji restoration), other interesting stuff happened. The steamboat was invented in 1807, but by 1867 the largest steamship in the world was Isambard Brunel's Great Eastern, an absolute unit, that was also at the time laying the first transatlantic cable. Leech collectors were a thing, providing bloodletting as a sensible medical treatment, and robbing corpses for medical studies was a common occurrence. "Aerial Photographer" became a profession, with Nadar taking panoramics from a balloon, roughly while "Thames ice skating rink manager" stopped being one with the end of the "little ice age".

The USSR also restricted access to him to even the Soviet press, and covered up until the fall of the USSR that Gagarin was a devout Russian-Orthodox person, and had his daughter baptized, they took away his cross before he went up, prayed the day before his mission, and more. The USSR didnt want it to get out their great hero was a devout christian in their atheist communist society
Still angers some that the USSR managed to launch a satellite, put a man in space and orbit first. And they did it still washing off the stench feudalism. They came a long way in a short time. But it lighted a fire under our rockets to eventually put a man on the moon and for some reason we can't do it again. Think China in conjunction with Russia will get there before us this time. We just don't have the will to do it anymore sadly.

Walter Smith, Charged With B&e, Stealing Property And Clothing Valued At 21 Kgs. Sentenced To 6 Months Of Hard Labour. Australia, 1924
I'm guessing it should say "...valued at 21 Pounds" & someone confused value with weight ie. "They use the metric system in Australia so it should be kilograms not pounds"
21 What? Has someone accidentally converted the pound currency to kilograms?. . . . . EDIT: Yes, it would seem so. Total value was 46 pounds (46lb=21kg). From elsewhere:"Walter Smith is listed in the NSW Police Gazette, 24 December 1924, as ‘charged with breaking and entering the dwelling-house of Edward Mulligan and stealing blinds with a value 20 pounds (part recovered)’, and with ‘stealing clothing, a value of 26 pounds (recovered) in the dwelling house of Ernest Leslie Mortimer.’ Sentenced to 6 months hard labour."
Why do I get the feeling this wasn't his first time doing something illegal?

The numbers can't be confirmed because they stopped counting once it got out to the press that they were sending members of the military in to fight and die whilst retrieving corpses.

Sadly, that was a sign of the times. The world wars were, bar none, the most important events to people in Europe of their lives. I can't imagine living through something of that sort.
