Although Dawkins is an arrogant misogynist, I think you misunderstand his and others’ fervent atheistic stance. It’s not that there is incontrovertible proof that God or gods *do not* exist, is that there is zero evidence that there *is* a God. There are many things that we don’t understand and that we may never know, but of all the natural mysteries that we have solved, throughout all of human history, in not one case has the answer been “God.” It stands to reason that this will continue to be the case.

Up Quark Down Quark, i understand what you are saying but I respectfully disagree. I do think there is evidence there is partially a divine or godlike force in the Universe… It’s the fact that humans have had persistent experiences of the paranormal for hundreds upon thousands of years. I don’t think every single human experience of the divine should be discounted as mere anecdotal data. Yes it’s imperfect and subjective but these are also not rare or unique experiences. These experiences span millennia and the entire globe. So, not definitive proof but a very large body of evidence. Like Feynman says, if your hypothesis does not agree with experiment your hypothesis is wrong. And if the hypothesis is that “there is no god or divine force in reality” then I think experiment (ie the sum of human experience) disagrees with that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I do honestly believe that people A) desperately want there to be reasons why things happen or why we’re here, B) are pattern seekers and are very, very good seeing things that aren’t there, C) will go to great lengths to defend their worldview even, and often especially in the case of lacking or contradicting evidence, and D) that most people are exceptionally bad natural scientists, jumbling up coincidence, correlation and causation like bad jugglers. For these reasons, and for the fact that until just a few centuries ago humanity had very poor tools for measuring the phenomena around us—and most of humanity had no access to those tools until just the last century—so that supernatural explanations come naturally to them. I was a firm believer in the supernatural for the first 25 years of my life, but over the last 25 I’ve learned that the natural world is inarguably real, greatly complicated, and vastly more interesting.

Up Quark Down Quark. I don’t disagree with a lot of what you’ve said but I think that your comment is still drawing too hard a line between “natural”and “supernatural” worlds. I think there is plenty we don’t understand about the natural world and that is the mystery I celebrate. And I’m not talking just about gods or angels or Loch Ness monsters… I’m talking about the profound sense that we are tiny, fallible mortal creatures stuck inside a very particular arrow of time and there *may* be *huge* facets to our reality that we are not equipped to understand. And that may mean Dawkins-esque atheists might be wrong about things like the nature of consciousness and the existence of an eternal consciousness. I think these are open questions about the “natural” world that have no good answers yet. And anyone who feels 100% certain they know everything about the world is probably trafficking in some kind of dogma, religious or not

Incorrect. Theism is based on belief. Gnosis is based on knowledge. Therefore you can be both atheist (without believe in a god) and agnostic (without knowledge of whether a god exists or not). One stance does not rely on the other.

For example, I believe that the Bible is false and that telling of god is false, but I do not believe there couldn’t be a higher power, and until I get evidence that is not a book that could have been easily a story made up by someone, that will continue to be my belief.

I think you have reversed atheist and agnostic. Look up in Webster dictionary for example. An atheist rejects there is a god or any god.
