45 Pictures Proving You Shouldn’t Believe Everything You See On Social Media, As Shared On ‘Instagram Reality’ (New Pics)
If you've been on social media long enough, you know well that most of what you see is as real as unicorns (which may just be a horse with an ice cream cone stuck on its forehead sans filters). Barbie-like figures, smooth skin faces, perfectly sculpted abs. That's all fine. Except when people start being ridiculous enough to not care if their Photoshop skills start spilling out.
Enter the Instagram Reality community which happily sheds light on those who take things quite too far. While we understand the appeal of matching your pics with those that seem born for Insta greatness (look at all those likes!), taking it to the digital extremes these photos do is borderline absurd. Once again, this only proves that Instagram Reality is the hero we need but don't deserve.

That body type doesn’t happen in nature anyway. Why anyone would think other people would believe they really look like that is mind boggling.
A couple of years ago, the Wall Street Journal published a shocking report on Instagram which uncovered internal documents proving that Facebook, which owns Instagram, has known for years that the platform is harmful to the mental health of many teenagers — particularly girls — but chose to keep the controversial information to themselves.
However, this revelation didn't come as a surprise to many, as highlighted in a report by the Wall Street Journal. The report cited an internal Instagram presentation from March 2020, which disclosed that when 32% of teenage girls “felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.” Extensive academic research further corroborated these findings. In fact, a study revealed that a significant 90% of young women admitted to using filters or editing their photos before sharing them on social media platforms.

"Perfect photos make us feel imperfect because, of course, we are. All humans are imperfect," she explained to Bored Panda in an email. "However, instead of realizing this, our knee-jerk reaction is to want to fix our imperfections and there are so many products available (especially marketed at women) to help us to do so."

In her real picture, if she didn’t have 10 layers of makeup shellacked to her face, and got rid of the fake tan, those balloon lips, and other fillers, she might look pretty nice. Age appropriate too. Here she just looks caked with makeup and sweating because her poor pores can’t breathe. She also looks like she needs a shower.

I work at a property in southern europe and a british "reality show" used the villa for the summer "special". The girls during the day looked like the pic on the right. When watching it on TV they looked like the pic on the left. One day i was doing my job (can't say too much) and told the producer etc i needed to use power tools and she said "oh don't worry, they are all inside the villa learning their lines!!" . Reality show my a**e! When the "special" came out on TV we forced ourselves to watch it basically to see our handiwork. The owner of the property called me up and they said the villa looks beautiful but they could only watch 15 minutes of the program as they said it was like fukin water torture!!

If she actually had hips and a*s like that, she wouldn’t naturally have a small waist, she’d have a proportionate waist measurement to her bust and hips. She would also not have a totally flat belly. The normal proportions are a waist that measures anywhere from 8 to 12 inches less than the bust and hips, which themselves should be close to the same measurement. Without extreme cosmetic surgery, like tons of lipo and the removal of ribs, this is not how the package nature offers looks.

This was my thought. My instincts (before I recognized her) were alcoholism or drug dependency. It’s the face of someone who indulges too much & tries to correct (hide) it with fillers, lifts & implants. To be fair, I know next to nothing about her other than a reality tv show with an equally vapid, attention-seeking husband & neither will ever be a Rhodes Scholar. The latter of which is fine. Just don’t seek the spotlight when you’re not qualified to determine the difference between a fish and a chicken.

I'd say the arms actually look about right. At a guess I'd say her right arm was posed the same way as the left. That is just a perspective trick not photoshop. The abs I suspect are photoshop though and there's all round smoothing and "deblemishing" done. If you go to the link, the first two pics are like this (still somewhat believable) the third looks weird though.

I just googled it and apparently, Asians measure a person's height in "heads". The more heads, the taller you are. So hence the micro head trend, to appear taller than you are.

Where did you get the "information" that Asians measure a person's height in heads? They absolutely do not. They use standard measurements. You CAN estimate a person's height in "heads", and in some cultures (e.g., Korean), the "ideal" height of "perfection" is 8 heads or more. However, they do not "measure" a person's height in heads. Korea uses the metric system.

I cannot imagine living like this. The time spent on hair, makeup, food placement, bag placement, the pose, the numerous photos taken to get the right one, the editing and posting. Life is too short! I would have been 2/3 of the way through the food before even coming up for air!

I think those built-in filters in the apps only apply to the face in a photo XD AFAIK you'd have to photoshop the rest yourself if you wanted the full-body treatment.

You can always tell the age from the hands, neck, a upper chest area. Even people who actually get plastic surgery seem to not realize this. Get a face lift, leave the rest crépey and and sun-damaged.

Lol. When I worked in makeup in LA, I worked with this fantastic up and coming photog. He would edit all shots of course (this was back in the early 2000s). But he'd never change shapes, nothing like that. He's use a tool to smooth the skin. But then he'd add back in a texture that looked like skin So it never looked fake but fixed shadows or blemishes that made it past makeup. Close up magazine style shots looked beautiful, but still appeared real. Great trick. Everyone needs to add back in that texture if ur gonna smooth ur skin to perfection!

She's very open about body positivity- thebirdspapaya - and often posts really raw and realistic photos. This is just a screengrab of random posts vs a live but she's very transparent about filters and aesthetic, weight gain and loss, posts tons of videos and does a lot of lives. Check out her profile, she without a doubt uses filters and strategic posing, but is by no means using photoshop or disguising anything.

I get a little photoshop here and there, hell I've used it on occasion to get rid of zits or red spots on my face, but why on Earth would you edit yourself so much you're unrecognizable? What's the point of being "omg insta-famous" when you can't go to conventions or anything to meet your "fans" since you look nothing like your insta-self?

If you copy your photo onto a new layer, put the new layer on top, and reduce its opacity to 10%, then merge both layers, it'll smooth over minor issues. It's a lot faster and more natural looking than spot correcting.

I really think many of thee people must have some form of body dysmorphia. We look at these photos and instantly recognize, "That looks wrong. That is not how the human form looks." But these 'grammers (or whatever their platform), edit their pictures, look at the finished product and say, "Yes. That is my ideal appearance. Nothing wrong with this at all."

In Australia recently police were looking for a woman who had absconded from hospital with a baby (her own baby) and they held fears for her safety or health. Cops released a press release with photos of the woman for the public to keep a look out for her. The photos must have been from the womans instagram or whatever because none of them resembled a real human being, all extremely photoshopped. So good luck looking for a freakish plastic creature that doesn't actually exist. (she was eventually found).

It's so sad that people hate themselves so much that they'll do this. And most of the pictures are absolutely frightening. It reminds me of people with eating disorders who continue to think they are fat when they look like skeletons.

The thing is, if these people clearly photoshop their photos, to unvelieable degrees, and get thousands of likes and "you look amazing / so pretty", well... is the commenters/followers that enable that. Just like in every platform, someone posts a meme, someone coments "haha"and gets thousands of likes for that, like people are easy sharing likes.

I actually used to teach to high schoolers how to do basic edits face pics with free app Paint.net, a free Photoshop clone. You know ...things like.toning down blemishes, making eyes pop a bit with some extra color and slightly brightening teeth. These techniques havn't changed in 20 years. Just small adjustments can make a world of difference....BUT the idea is that you can only tell it's changed when you flip between the images. Anything more and the viewer sees it as off but might not be able to tell you what is bothering them. This stuff, however, with software doing it for you is just lazy ppl trying to be artists.
