Meh. The assertion that it is a fruit is trivially true. But that doesn't mean it is not a vegetable. The distinction between fruits and vegetables doesn't exist in botany or biology, it's a culinary distinction. If is something is used or eaten as a vegetable, that is exactly what makes it a vegetable. Might as well say wheat is actually a fruit: wheat is a fruit in the exact way a squash is a fruit. Funny enough, there was a supreme Court case on exactly this issue in re: tomatoes and whether they qualified as a fruit for tex purposes.

So are tomatoes, chinese corn, green beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, avodacos, snap peas and pretty much any vegetable I find tolerable.

It's a vegetable. Botanists trying to hijack existing words like "fruit" "nut" "berry" and change their long standing meaning is annoying and we all know squash is a vegetable.

Maybe they are referring to the sport of squash.
