Human idiocy, just like our creativity, knows no bounds. Whether it's a temporary brainfart or something more severe, it seems that we always find a way to push the limit.
And you couldn't find better proof of this than the subreddit r/facecpalm. Created all the way back in 2009, this online community describes itself as "a gallery of inexplicable stupidity" and currently has over 6 million members constantly looking for new 'artworks' for its 'collection.'
Over the years, they have collected plenty of examples of people making a complete fool of themselves both online and in real life, so we thought it would be interesting to make an exhibit, featuring the most memorable ones. Continue scrolling and enjoy!

Well You're Not Wrong
It Is Insane
We reached out to the people who look after r/facepalm and one of them agreed to tell us more about the community.
"We moderate according to Reddit's content policy and that means that most of the comment moderation we do is to remove bigotry and racism," they told Bored Panda.
"The subreddit's community is fine, for the most part. A lot of people come here to have a laugh at whatever silly thing is being posted and that's ok."
What About Nurses Who Wear Them 8 To 10 Hours A Day
In Fact, It’s Happened 7 Times
You can see a lot of different themes on the subreddit, and the mod said they can change quite fast. "[What's popular] really depends on what is on people's minds at the time. Currently, a popular topic is the insane lengths people go through to deny the facts about Covid."
But there's a way to determine what we can expect from r/facepalm. According to research, people see actions as stupid for three primary reasons: the actions reflect a foolhardy level of risk, an absent-mindedness and lack of practicality, or an impulsive lack of control.
So even though the word 'stupid' sounds subjective, scientists have discovered that people are very quick to identify it.
"People don't spend time on judging if something is stupid or not," study researcher Balazs Aczel told Live Science. "It comes instantaneously, and as our results showed, they have high agreement. If one person calls something stupid, there's a high likelihood others will do the same thing."
The First Women In The Epitome Of Stupid
This is inhumane on so many levels.... Please never ever say things like this... these days, even babies get raped... old women are getting rape... the fact is a sick mind can do such a thing and will think of any excuse possible...

It might seem unusual or even strange to investigate how people decide that something is stupid. But scientists love a challenge and researchers who study decision-making had no information, beyond anecdotes, as to how people decide whether an action is stupid.
So the team collected news stories and other online content that someone had described as stupid.
One example was a news story about a robber who set out to steal cellphones, but lifted GPS devices instead — and failed to switch the devices off, allowing the police to discover them (and him) immediately.
Next, the researchers invited 154 different students to gather examples of stupidity from their day-to-day life and read the stories, asking them whether each qualified as stupid.
The students (who were all Hungarian) then chose possible reasons from a long list as to why they'd decided each example would qualify for the label.

Now Your Own Decisions Belong To A Man You Haven't Met
This makes me very mad. Even after I had 2 kids I still had to fight to get my tubes tied because "what if you and your husband wan't more kids?" Grrrrr
We should reply "then he can go find someone who do too because I won't"!
Load More Replies...I'm an engaged lesbian, I have an adopted daughter (who was my goddaughter), I'm 26 years old and without a s**t ton of meds, I bleed uncontrollably (non stop, not just on period) to the point I was passing out and had to be on insanely high iron tablets. But nope, still not allowed a Hysterectomy, "just in case you change your mind".. m**********r I'm probably infertile with all these pills I take anyway.
I'm so sorry you're going through that. The misogyny in healthcare is awful. You shouldn't have to live like this. I'm in the U.K. too and struggling to get taken seriously for totally different health problems. The amount of doctors who say to me "it's all in your head".....
Load More Replies...When I wanted my tubes tied for medical reasons my doctor asked me what if I met Mr. Right and the thing he wanted most in the world was to have kids. My reply was.. then he's not Mr. Right.
The idea that a woman who is sure that she will never be pregnant (for any reason) will change her mind after meeting some man is infuriating
Load More Replies...Even in the early 80s the US military considered a woman her husband's property. My mom was not allowed a tubal ligation until my dad signed the paperwork for it, thus giving HIS "permission" for her to do something to HER own body. Wild AF. My 18 year old son couldn't believe it when she told that story at dinner the other night.
I experienced something similar with a 5-year birth control that could be removed anytime. They told me that I will likely choose a husband over college in the next few years so they weren’t comfortable performing the requested procedure. Yep, an imaginary man’s imaginary wishes were more important than my own will and safety.
Also, keep in mind that a good marriage is not based entirely on sex, and can still thrive without it!
Load More Replies...And yet it's perfectly fine to go for multiple facelifts and tummy tucks until people look like cats or whatever. How the fork is this acceptable in the 21st century?! Consult with me, give me a suitcase full of pamphlets, whatever you need to do, doc. But, in the end, it's MY decision, MY body, MY choice.
That’s what I’m saying. Make the patient sign a bunch of paperwork that makes it clear that sterilization is permanent and then let’s get on with the show. The world is overpopulated and the planet is dying. It really is fine.
Load More Replies...I will start this off by stating I’m a guy just in case the name makes it ambiguous, why do doctors believe that a woman can’t make their own mind up about their body is so crazy, they go through years of schooling and have a stringent ethics courses but after all that they still go humm maybe a man will be willing to use this person as a baby maker so let’s ignore everything we were taught so we don’t have to worry about men being upset
if only there was some back alley doctor willing to do what the person f*****g wants ; willing to do what the person in the body wants for his/her body [there is only one important thing : consent(if the person wants it DO IT if the person doesn't want it DON'T do it;; it's not to the surgeon to decide it is to the person IT. IS. ABOUT! -no more we don't do transexual people they better stay unhappy their whole life -no more you shouldn't get a tattoo you'll regret it when the person is saying he won't -no more deciding for the person who knows best and who's made his (and here her) decision !!!!!!!!!! telling them it's for their own good when really it's not people know their own good ; if this women here doesn't want children then let her not have children
This is so f****d up. My husband got a vasectomy (we both agreed upon it). His doctor didn't want to speak to me, have me sign anything, etc. My husband just scheduled the appointment and got one. Ridiculous.
Bravo to your husband. I know a couple men that think vasectomies are de-masculating. Even though they know they don’t want anymore kids.
Load More Replies...I don't know. But until then, we keep fighting, keep having these discussions, support our fellow women, hold female politicians accountable to the betterment of women's rights, and teach our sons to be better than previous generations.
Load More Replies...Is this some kind of archaic law that hasn’t gone off the books, or is this just those a*****e doctors? If it isn’t a law. I’d be calling every doctor that’s in-network on my health insurance until I found one that realizes a woman is supposed to have autonomy over her body. Because she’s the one inhabiting it 24/7/365 (366 in leap year). Her husband is only a 3 minute (or less) visitor.
Asked my dr for the depo shot recently and she said 'but what if you want kids?' so I'm going to planned parenthood to get the shot soon.
My daughters first Gyno wouldn't give her a copper iud bc she may have kids someday. Absolutely ridiculous. She got the procedure at planned parenthood. This is why the republicans want to defund them bc they give women autonomy and healthcare wo control.
Load More Replies...I understand the Dr wanting to make you aware that he's had patients regret that decision so wanting to make sure you are certain. I could even get onboard with ok, we consult over this, I give you all the information about the surgery, then we talk again a week later and if you're still certain we schedule the operation. But flat out refusal without a legitimate medical concern is awful
I don't believe this is a universal thing, but still, it would be nice if some doctors would just do their jobs without injecting their personal opinions into it.
I have yet to hear of any women who have NOT been told that. It seems to be pretty universal when dealing with male doctors.
Load More Replies...i was told i would change my mind. i'm 42 and still don't want kids, now I'm too close to menopause to get my tubes tied. i've been on birth control for literally 27 years.
I had mine done at 42, you're not too close to get it tied. You may not hit menopause for another 10 years.
Load More Replies...I was 22 yrs old with 2 "Birth Control Babies". I had to fight for a tubulization. We both worked and had a combined income of about $10 grand a year. I couldn't afford more children even though we both wanted more.
Unfortunately, this is so common that often going somewhere else results in the same thing. I’ve had 5 OBGYNs deny the procedure with the reasons that “I might change my mind” or “I might find a man who wants kids.” I have endometriosis and only a .1% chance of having a kid. The doctors know this.
Load More Replies...I had to have my husbands ok for an emergency hysterectomy. No, it’s not law, nor is it ethical, but it is reality as I lay there in misery with my male doctor, who also told me afterwards that the pain I claimed to be in due to a weird medical trait I have, wherein my body doesn’t recognize pain meds.. was all me just being .. & I kid you not “hysterical & wanting attention”. Aaahh, American medical! 🤬
It took me 20 years to find someone who'd give me a tubal ligation. And, even then, she HAD TO talk to my then-husbanf before doing it!!!! Pizsed me iff
Ooh yes! I have endometriosis, which is horrible... got it from my Mom. She only got "relief" if you can call it that, by going through menopause. She never pursued anything, but I tried, when I was 34. I asked for a voluntary hysterectomy, leaving my ovaries, to see what might happen and then if needed, to take them out too. I saw 9 doctors, which cost me... a fortune, and they ALL said a variation of the same thing. "Yes, we confirm you have endo. But you might want children, or your future husband might, so no, we won't do it." ALL of those appointments, tests, etc. cost me $3,890 total. For nothing. I don't want to wake up out of a sound sleep, already crying in pain. I don't want to pay a fortune to drug myself into oblivion to get through it or just suffer through it, while trying to work, etc. I just handle it as best I can now, and with it. My country sucks.
Big hug my endo sister. It is a horrible debilitating disease that most doctors neglect. They let mine go that far that now i am disabled and in constant pain. If you are still looking for a hysterectomy check the reddit "childfree" they have a list of recommended doctors that are sterilisation friendly.
Load More Replies...I was 22, in the middle of a divorce and had to fight about getting my tubes tied! They wanted my soon to be ex-husband to sign for me to get it done...
Supposedly this problem is even worse in Hong Kong, for both tubular ligation and vasectomy. As if it were some pressing communal business how fertile you are.
You need to change doctors, I did thirty seven years ago. Haven’t been pregnant since. And I didn’t ask my husbands permission. I sat him down and told him what I was going to do as a courtesy.
I could die during/after childbirth and they still won't tie my tubes either. (I'm 41, I think I know my body responds by now!) Said my husband and I might "change our minds". Smh! Yeah, that sounds like a great plan. Lemme get pregnant and die, leaving my poor grieving hubby with a new baby to care for alone! IF baby even makes it! Wtf!?
I had to wait 6 months after I had my twins, already had two other kids. I had to have a C-section. I asked if the doctor could tie my tubes then, nope you’re to young (25). You may want more kids. Joke when they did the C-section, they had to make a T incision in my womb because the one twin was further down and it was easier to get my daughter. Okay. Though from then on because of my weakened uterus I would have to have a C-section, and deliver my other kid prematurely because the baby couldn’t get to big. I was so pissed I had to wait 6 months and go under another surgery to do what I wanted at the birth of my twins.
My husband had to sign a paper stating he did not want more children for me to get my tubes tied. Stupid. I was so mad I told him if he didn't sign it then we wouldn't be having sex anymore. He signed it pretty quick.
My mom went thru this in the 60's after have 6 kids. The Dr told her maybe her husband would want more. I can't believe it's still happening.
Ridiculous! And even if she had her tubes tied & down the road decided she wanted a baby then they can sometimes be reversed. I know of a woman who had 3 singletons, triplets & then got her tubes tied. Later on her & her husband decided they wanted another baby. They had twins & another singleton.
I was 28 and in excruciating pain from fibroid growths in my uterus. More than one Dr. refused to do a hysterectomy because I “might want to have kids”. I would have been unable to bear a live child because of the growths. I was single and did not want children. Where is the logic?
My niece, 24, had 3 kids and was pregnant. She wanted her tubes tied. She wanted them tied before this pregnancy, but nope. Most Dr's won't do it before 30, but her new Dr agreed since she already had 3 with 1 on the way. Sadly, she passed away before the baby came (unrelated) but I always remember what she told the Dr's who refused "I was a teen mom. Then had 2 more before I was 23. I think I have a better idea of how many I want or if I want more (she didn't but was happy about it). When you are the one who has to go through pregnancy, childbirth, etc, THEN you can tell me what is best for YOU. I might be young, but I'm old enough make decisions about my life & body." Her last Dr agreed. I feel the same way about pro-life. No one can or should make decisions about what you can or cannot do with your body
i got the "your to young" i had 2 kids and had complications with both pregnancies and both births and almost dies but 25 was to young to make that choice
Soldiers under a certain age need spousal approval and sometimes approval from chain of command to get a vasectomy. Not the same because the army literally owns you, but still a ridiculous reality
I've been to 10 and I still can't find one that believes I have endometriosis much less find one that will let me get my tubes tied.
Load More Replies...It's bizarre that a certain group of people will only think about the long term future if it's in line with their stupid morals
I had fibroid tumors. They weighed as much as my second son at the time of his birth (11.5 lbs). I begged for a hysterectomy after his birth. It took me nine years to get one because, "What if something were to happen to your children? Wouldn't you want the ability to have more?" I was 32 when the baby was born. I was, you guessed it, 41 when I was finally able to get the hysterectomy because the fibroids were adhering to everything inside. Sometimes I hate doctors.
Ugh. This is why it took so long for me to get the medically necessary hysterectomy I needed. Because I might possibly want to get pregnant one day, even though I'd never wanted kids and made that clear, and my potential future partner might want to.
Someone i know has a condition and was in a lot of pain. There is medicine for that but the doctor wouldn’t give it to her because she might have difficulty having children in the future. That person does not even want any kids, and the doctor said « what if she wants kids in the future ? »
I convinced a doctor to tie my tubes (double cauterize) when I was 24 1/2 years old. that was back in 1975. I've never regretted - not passing on genetic disorders to innocent offspring
my mom had a hysterectomy. she had wanted one for a while. her period was heavy all the time, was bleeding through a pad and tampon together. she had kids and neither my mom or dad wanted anymore. my dad had to tell the doctors and request a hysterectomy for her because the doctors refused under her request. they didn't accept the request until they realized it was medically necessary.
I had a friend who swore she would never have kids. Years later she changed her mind. The docs have been through too many instances of tying tubes only to have the patient chance thier mind and come back and try to sue them for it. So they are far more careful about it now.
Wait please don't call me dumb but is tube tying where you like stop the eggs from being able to leave during periods or something? Just checking
With the population steadily strangling this planet, why are there all these creepers wanting women to have babies above all else? O.o
I DO support this. Too many women keep having child after child, either because their religion is against birth control, or their husband is, or their husband is controlling about the womans' body in all ways. Do you really have to have a spouses blessing to have your tubes tied? If you have a normally good relationship it SHOULD be a discussion, but if not..doctor/client protected info.
yo, if I run into a doctor who says that to me...idk what I will say, but there will be a verbal storm for sure
I had a friend who gave a child up for adoption at 17. She was still looking for a doctor to tie her tubes at 22. What she needed was some good pre and post-adoption counseling. That was back in the 1970s when you could not get good counseling. I think the only reason Planned Parenthood would not do it was that it would be real surgery in a real hospital.
I went to my doctor, when birth control pills first were available, and asked for a Rx. He said his religion wouldn't allow him to prescribe them for me.
Which is the worst. Especially when I haven't wanted kids and never planned on them ever since I was young and it's a much smaller risk of pregnancy than many BC and contraceptives.
I doubt those same doctors would give the same advice to an unmarried man who wants a vasectomy.
Funny how men without children are never questioned, isn't it? /snark
This is effed up and misogynistic on many levels, but similar things also happen to men. I've had a few friends struggle and eventually give up on getting vasectomies because no doctor would believe that they would never want to reproduce
If the guy wants kids we can break up or adopt. Dont put more kids into the world for someone else without thinking of the ones already in it first.
My friend had her uterus on a table next to her after her 3rd child. She asked that it stay out and the doctor said "What if one of your children dies?" And put it back in.
Doctors encouraging replacement kids. Apparently that's not unheard of. Same with doctors using the excuse of "what if your current kid needs a spare -insert organ-?" and encouraging "spare parts" kids as I like to call it. Not sure how common that one is, but I've heard of one or two people running into that.
Load More Replies...As a gyn nurse from Denmark (so a fairly laid back country), I have to say our doctors discourage it as well, especially if you're young or have no kids. Their reasoning is, why go through surgery with all the included risks, when you can get an IUD in 5 minutes, that last for 5 years, doesn't include the same risks and is practically every bit as safe as having your tubes tied (cuz please keep in mind, tied tubes/vasectomies aren't 100% either). So I do believe it's pretty common to discourage it world wide.
Whaaaaat? Do you live in a Middle Eastern country? I cannot believe this. Was it the opinion of the 'doctor' (read charlatan) based on his personal 'morals'?
you just have to ask them to wright down the refusal and reason why 😸
My husband and I had 5 kids by the time I was 26. Doctors refused to tie me "what if you want more in the future/what if one of your children dies and you want to replace them" But they were perfectly happy to snip my hubby without any bullsh*t excuses
Our GP didn’t want my husband to get a vasectomy until our second child (husband’s fourth) was one. I got a coil instead and ended up pregnant again, due to a bodged procedure.
I even have my husband on my side. We don't want kids. We know we'll make horrible parents and with our physical health issues we can't give children everything they need or should have. I'm still fighting. I want to have this done without his "permission", it's the principle of the thing.
Similar with vasectomies. Never had one myself, but a guy I work with said he had to jump through hoops before they'd do it.I think its more about possibly changing your mind once you meet the right person later on.
You have to be 25, mature enough to make a decision that is very difficult to reverse. Im certain that your doctors explained the why to you all, not just "in case a man wants kids with you". How about listening to the medical reasons instead of being outraged? I waited the two years before mine. The age suggestion for this is based on decades of women wanting to change their minds after spontaneously getting it done early. Yes, you may not change your mind but 25 is NOT a long time to wait.
You have to be 25 to get tubes tied. Old enough that it isn't a spontaneous decision because it's difficult to reverse. I wanted mine done after my second child but had to wait 2 years as well. My doctor took the time to explain that to me and i suspect yours did too but you choose to be outraged that they are trying to prevent you future difficulty. 25 is NOT too long to wait.
I dont think that questioning someones motives for such a drastic thing is strange, but the wording is very outdated.
Nobody has a hysterectomy as birth control, if they had it it was for medical reasons. And at the end they still could have children. Your comment just proves that denying women sterilisation is absurd.
Load More Replies...but men aren't blamed when they get a girl/woman pregnant, whether they used a condom or not. And men are usually the ones making the decisions about women's bodies so... are you obtuse on purpose or are you just dense?
Load More Replies...Consent forms exist and should be enough to protect both the doctor and the patient. There's also usually counselling that exists and should be made available in cases like this, to make sure that the patient realises the finality of their decisions. Absolutely inhumane and in this case misogynistic to deny medical care to someone.
Load More Replies...The reasons fell into three categories. The first, dubbed "confident ignorance," is when someone tackles something high-risk without the required skills. The cellphone/GPS caper was a prime example of this kind of stupidity.
The next category was "absent-mindedness," which applied to situations where people knew the right thing to do, but for some reason weren't paying close attention. Aczel said one example would be walking out of the store without paying for your groceries.
The third kind of stupidity was described by a lack of control. It occurred when people knew they shouldn't do something but couldn't resist their impulse to do it anyway. Reaching for the third slice of cake when you know you'll get a stomachache later is an example of this kind of stupidity, Aczel explained.

According to Aczel, stupidity is an interesting concept because it doesn't always track with intelligence.
Even people who possess a very high IQ can make extremely dumb moves. The research revealed that judging a behavior "stupid" reveals the observer's expectations of how someone should behave, he said. But the person doing the stupid thing might be operating according to a different set of expectations or goals.

On a more practical level, you might be wondering if any of this matters. But understanding why people call something stupid might provide better ways to call out dumb behavior, Aczel highlighted. For instance, it might be more helpful to tell someone they're being overconfident than that they're being stupid.

After the research, the team said they plan to concentrate on the cognitive mechanisms people use to monitor others' behaviors. One mystery, Aczel said, is the question why people find stupidity so amusing, a fact that drives more and more people to become members of r/facepalm.
"People want to watch other people doing something stupid as a source of amusement," he said. And it's hard to argue with that.

Why The Hell Would You Do This
I work for a hospital, in a COVID ICU. They're cutting support personnel, they're cutting supply chains, they're failing to provide needed equipment. Because the lack of support is making this such a shitty place to work, nurses are leaving in droves and they're having to pay the new hires much higher salaries to stay staffed. And of course, the one thing they're *not* cutting is executive salaries.

This is so common. Where I'm from, they give us the disposable face shields for air travel. My mom travelled alone and then complained to me that it was hard to see out of. I peeled off the plastic in front of her and she as like "ohhh." And so the next time I travelled by air, I noticed a majority of people at my gate, wearing those shields without removing the plastic film. So I made a big show of struggling to remove mine and a few noticed and started removing theirs. It spread around.

Sometimes it also happens with demolition... And that's slightly less funny.

To be fair, if he already had an N95 mask (that you use for woodworking, gardening, whatever), it's okay to wear it. And there were arguments for leaving the economy open. The shutdown has hurt a lot of people; reasonable minds can disagree. At this point, if a Republican simply does not advocate the violent overthrow of our government, I'm counting it as a win
