Signs are a part of that process: road signs, logos, placards, and badges let us know things like what to do or not to do, where to turn, and what's on the menu. But signs can also fall victim to bad design; if they're not clear, they more often than not confuse rather than help.

Daughter was living with, now, son-in-law in Alabama (we live in MIch) as he was stationed at Fort Benning. She called me all concerned about her brakes not working. "Check the fluid"..."empty".."get some brake fluid and be EASY on the brakes, use the trans to slow down until you can get to a repair shop". Just so happened she pulled into a store like the one pictured here. Called me bawling.."They want $1000 to fix it!" .."Go to a different shop and have them fix the bad brake line". .. Called me back, "they said they'd call the cops on me driving an unsafe car"...'tell them YOU'LL call the cops on them illegally possessing your car". Imagine, a Michigan car, on a hoist, in Alabama . I have no doubt the mechanic was horrified at the undercarriage on that 10 year old car, and wanted to repair EVERY brake line. The guy she took it to fixed the bad one and became her mechanic while she was there. Screew yoo Midas!

Why do so many signs seem to think that a language written left to right will be comprehensible when written in columns with nothing to indicate that this is the case (like different colours) other than hoping the person figures it out rather than just moving on because the point of a sign is to communicate and if the message isn't clear I'm not wasting time trying to work out what it is saying.
