Nothing teaches empathy better than working at a restaurant. Only after you separate a mile-long check in the middle of the dinner rush do you start fully appreciating the way others serve you. Sure, you may like working with people, but everyone has their limit of bullsh*t they can take before they admit themselves to a mental hospital. Bored Panda has compiled a list of brutally honest memes that prove only the strongest can survive working in the kitchen. I could just pinch the cheekies of that cute little colt! He is ADORABLE!!!
Not a restaurant, but I did have something similar happen in a stationery shop I worked in, when a customer insisted that he'd bought something in our shop and I said we'd never sold it. He then asked the manager, she checked and told him the same thing. I worked very hard not to do this ^ to him!
When someone without a job comments on job related things XD ^
Load More Replies...When someone asks you something and you didn't hear. Then they ask you another time after you say "What?" And you still can't hear them and this goes on for 10 minutes and you feel like an idiot saying WHAT for 10 minutes straight, so you just stand there and nod your head and then they say. "Do you?"
"I know you have to take that picture, but couldnt you just give that treat now, I promise to sit"?
Aw!! Cute! If this dog was serving my food I'd definitely shower him/her with compliments!
and if he completely spilled my food order all over my lap and on the floor, i would STILL shower him with hugs and kisses.

I love this one. It conveys, in a really adorable way, that exact feeling. I want this dog, now.
Or they just think of you as their work horse.

No tips are compulsory in my Country. But why should a customer tell a joke?
As a customer, using humour is one way to make pleasant conversation, especially if the server has been really friendly, competent and attentive. In order to bring a smile to his/her face because the service they provided was excellent! It depends on the situation, though. I guess the customer would also have to be an extrovert with, hopefully, a good sense of humour!

I really wish I could do the happy dance right in front of them when they say that lol
I actually worked with a dude who I haaated working with. When I quit we became best friends.

Omg, my husband does the “winning lottery numbers”! I have told him so many times that it’s so annoying.
I used to carry around the fake money you buy as a play set for your kids. One of them had a pack of million dollar bills so I would carry those with me at work and give them out with a complimentary eye roll haha
I work in a call center and get that or what's the winning lottery numbers all the time. I simply say, sir if I knew that we wouldn't be talking right now.
My mom always complains they didn't put enough milk on her coffee. I make the exact same face to show the waiter they're not alone.

Realistically pretending to work is one of the most important skills in jobs.
Yes! I worked in a small cheap clothing store for a brief time. I was usually the opener. It would be a half hour before opening and I’d be going over the night deposit and setting up the registers. I’d keep the minimal amount of lights on but customers could still see me and would be banging on the door! They think that just because there’s someone inside they should be let in. Then they are rude when you try to explain why you couldn’t let them in.

That happened to me last night. I was cleaning the tables, re-setting them, dealing to other customers, and other things, and this one person at a completely different table sticks their hand in the air and waves it around while saying "excuse me, waiter, hello". I don't know if anyone who hasn't worked in a restaurant realizes this, but that is VERY annoying.
as a customer, i hate seeing when others do that.

If you look up Where's Wally or Waldo, one of the first image results is this page, and you can find him (with hat and glasses and travelling pack) behind the green-striped screen to the left of the red-striped rectangular pop-up stand, right above the woman with a hole in her towel. Also, catch Wenda popping up behind the red and white umbrella!
Right in the middle of the page about 2/3 of the way up behind the green towel fort. Straight up from the red beach ball being popped by the umbrella.
Agreed. They have the courage to come and say, "hey I forgot but want to make sure you get what you asked for.". I mean, not literally, but, in the sense that they care about the outcome.

A table of women - no thank you. I will help anyone else. I can already see the order. I want the sandwich with soup, but instead of soup I would like a salad with vinaigrette on the side, a water with a lemon wedge and can you get that so there are no seeds that fall into the water. I would also like this to be on separate checks, but if my friends order a drink I will pick that up for them.
and you forgot the 1 dollar tip you get as a reward, lol
Load More Replies...I always ask to speak to a manager. Being one myself in the retail setting, I appreciated good remarks moreso than bad ones (opportunities to fix a problem). So when dining out, if I have good service and/or good food, I always give a good review to the manager, the wait staff and the cooks.
Not always true on the old women part. I was in the industry in my 20's and started off working at TGIF, where back then we wore buttons with all kind of sayings... mine was "Tipping is not a city in China" and due to being in the service industry to this day I tip well, and I'm not an A whole to people. So this is going to get me into further trouble... but few notes, Those women are just rude witches with a B,who think they are superior and you are their servant, confused on the word "Service". And sorry the WORST tippers at the time sadly were the following: Yes mostly that type of table, most women sadly, and please forgive me but there were always certain races that were notorious for never tipping. Finally to this day if I go with someone and they say they can't afford to tip, than I say to them I can't afford to go out with you in the future, if you can't afford the tip than maybe you should stay home....
This one should be higher upvoted. This is spot on. Like, you know how I'm doing so don't ask me just to show a front that you care.

Here ya go... what? this isn't your usual? Ohhh you want your other usual usual....brings out whatever... nope not right yet? well they don't have your usual usual so I brought out my usual and I think you will love it... *walks away mumbling nasty things under my breath*
We run a restaurant and we handle the service by ourselves. Aaanndd this is aaaaalways happen.
When I'm the customer, I do that before asking for the checks. It's me, my friends and a calculator while the waiter stares in confusion.
I do that too... Sometimes I ask bill first and then i'll split it...

I would say it should be required as part of high school graduation requirements. Some schools in our area have restaurants in them that you can take classes for certain credits and good students not even in the classes get rewarded by getting to eat lunch there. Teaches manners and etiquette from both sides.
Load More Replies...That wouldn't really work. Cause then a lot of people won't have to deal with the rude customers
in my younger days, i had a variety of jobs in vastly different fields. my first real job was waitressing & I seriously sucked at it. couldn't remember what went with what, forgot to bring parts of orders; most of the people were cool about it. since then, i have had a long-standing admiration for those that do that kind of work well & keep a great attitude! be kind to your servers--they deal with a lot more than you may realize!
I've never worked in a restaurant or bar - I just don't have the temperament for it (I'd be locked up for murdering the first d******d who gave me any kind of grief). I do appreciate the people who do it though and I try to be as generous as possible with tips -even here in the UK & in Europe where servers are usually paid better than their American counterparts. If I'm with someone who insists on paying the bill and they don't tip appropriately I'll put down extra cash.
I think everyone should work retail or some kind to customer service or 3 years. It would make humans out of them. I mean Israel expects their citizens to serve in the military for three years...just sayin'.
I was at my local pizza place once, getting ready to leave. Clearly they were getting ready to close for the night (sweeping up, etc). This rude couple comes in right then (it's after 10pm) and sits down. I saw the waitress die a little inside, lol. And it is not a quick in-and-out pizza place. I'm sure the couple was there 45 min to an hour.
When I threw pizzas the first thing I'd do, 15 minutes before closing, was to shut off the oven. And even if I hadn't I'd tell the wait-staff to say I had. I regularly let the servers tell customers that their mistake was my fault. I wasn't working for tips so it didn't matter to me.
Load More Replies...I worked at a 24 hour convenience store where the beer case was locked 15 minutes before the State cut-off time at 2am for liquor sales (starts again at 6am). (This is to avoid accidentally selling past 2am if the customer takes their time browsing before bringing their booze up to the counter.) This couple walks in at 10 minutes to 2 and argues with me that they want the case open because they need beer. I stated our store policy. They said "That's ridiculous! How is a person supposed to buy beer?" I said "Come to the store during the other 19 hours and 45 minutes that liquor sales are open."
Unless its the very end of the night, how is anyone suppose to know when their waiter's shift ends? They are just there enjoying their meal, which they are entitled to do since they are paying for it.

My favourite place to eat out was Kingly Vale (a nature reserve) a short hike follwed by a picnic on a burial mound (free). Can't walk that far any more, so it's now off to the top of Portsdown Hill in the car for a picnic (also free)

One time, I brought it out, and the old guy at the table was about to try and put it out using his phone (by placing the phone on top of the flame), I was about to tell him not to, but his daughter luckily got there first.
I once answered the phone, and the customer made a really long order, then proceeded to ask if they could have free food because their order was over $100. Sometimes, we might give a big spending customer a bag of prawn chips for free, but because they asked, we weren't going too. After a lengthy discussion (in the middle of the rush hour), they then said to cancel their order and that they were never coming back here for food again. 30 minutes later they phoned up again, but with someone else talking, a different name, and a different phone number, but the same order, and i could here the original person talking in the background.

Load More Replies...Honestly, the only time I won't tip 20% is if the waiter is RUDE or has a bad attitude. Mistakes I can forgive, rudeness I cannot.
I always try to AT LEAST tip 15%, typically 20-25. My grandmother on a good day gives 10%
I hate having a set percentage number, I think you should tip them what they deserve.
Load More Replies...i tip 30 every time because i served for 6.5 years and i know the struggle
90% of the time we are 20-25% tippers. I can always tell what’s going on that usually is no fault of the workers- unexpected crowd or large group etc- so as long as they are friendly and apologetic they’re probably going to get a better tip. And even if our service was perfect, if I see them dealing with a particularly terrible table the tip goes up. We don’t eat out a lot but when we do we make sure we can take care of the waiter.
My mother has tipped 20% or more every time but once that I was with her and remember. I ordered the japleno egg burger without peppers and mayo. Basically I was having a bad day and mom was trying to get me to eat and I’m freaky picky, so I ended up finding a burger place where I could get a cheddar, bacon, egg burger. Our waiter seems pleasant enough although for some reason when we told her no peppers on the burger because I’m very sensitive to spice she neglected to mention peppers were in the Mac and cheese ball side but no big deal, just rip a few bucks(mom can’t eat gluten), I get it long day. My drink still came with ice anyways (I’m hyper sensitive and there’s something repulsive about it to me as a feeling) so I just fished it into moms cup. Food took ages to come out and the waitress forgot the pear sauce on my mom’s burger, you know what you eventually got it without complaint. Then my food arrives, I’m immediately confused, it’s a total plain burger with onions and it’s...
... a off color and well done so mom asks her to come over for a minute when she finishes the table she’s working with, “What is this? It doesn’t seem like what my daughter ordered.” She gets a prickly tone, “Lady, it’s just the bison burger.” Mom tries to calmly insist that this is not my food and the waiter starts to get angry, “Look your child ordered the bison burger and I do not appreciate you waisting my time. Please just eat your food.” “My daughter is not anywhere near that adventurous. Can you please get your manager so I can figure this out.” The woman finally stalks off and returns with the manager who immediately tells us it’s fine and takes the bison burger away comes back five minutes later with the original order that just got mixed up. I enjoy it awkwardly not quite sure what just happened. After all this do you know what the tip was, a bit over 15%

I actually hate it when servers don't write down my order. Usually (not often, but enough) it comes back wrong. I've worked retail. I know it speeds things up, but take the time to write it down; it reduces errors.
Typically when they don't write it down, they either have been doing the job for forever, or your at a very nice restaurant. Other times, people just want to look cool

This was one of the best tings that happened to me when I worked as a server. On more than one occasion, too! It's all you can do not to say, "HA!" right in their face. LOL
One time I was stuck in line behind this obnoxious customer who would not stop bitching and berating the cashier - and the issue wasn't even his fault or anything he had any control over. No, I just wanted to sit here with my polystyrene box like an a*****e. I can't tell you how many servers have had a great tip turn to f**k-all because I can't leave the damn place and often have to get up and track them down to pay.
This! We get seated and then see our server seat another table, take drink orders and f**k off for 10 minutes. "the table" is where the customers are seated and a specific server is assigned to wait on them. "Ranch" is a type of salad dressing made of some combination of buttermilk, salt, garlic, onion, mustard, herbs, and spices, mixed into a sauce based on mayonnaise, or another oil emulsion. as someone in another post commented "americans like to put that on everything." like chicken nuggets, salad, hot wings, various veggies, and sometimes in casseroles. not all americans like it, but more than would care to admit.

i worked at t-shirt shop with a bunch of snooty girls who treated me with distain because i was the only punk girl there. one day a coworker lamented she couldn't attend a school dance as she had to work that night. i totally blew away everyone when out of the blue i said i'd work her shift so she could go to the dance. you could've heard a pin drop. the manager changed the schedule, took me aside and asked why - i said "now she has to be nice to me, and it's going to kill her."
I never more than 7 shift in 5 years of working at a restaurant. I don't want to go in on my days off while you go off frolicking somewhere honestly, plus the restaurant can probably handle one worker gone.
A cup of coffee costs pennies. If I am paying 10x that, why is it wrong to ask for fresh coffee when one cup more than pays for the whole pot? Old coffee is nasty. Instant is worse. Load More Replies...while i try to be compassionate to my servers when dining out & usually tip a minimum 20%, this 'rule' about tipping them 20% all the time is ridiculous! if you absolutely suck as a server, i'm sorry, but you aren't getting 20%. i've done the job before, so i know what it's like. i also know that if everyone had tipped me the 'mandatory' 20%, i might've stuck with it rather than realize that i wasn't cut out for it.
I can think of a lot more reasons to not tip a server 20%.. like when a server is rude, gratuity is added as a line item already (yeah, I've been chased by a waiter for not tipping, while gratuity was added automatically to the bill and the complete amount was paid), food arrives cold etc. Each error is a deduction. And each unexpected extra is added on. Simple.
Don't b***h at the customers. If you think it's mandatory, then tell the restaurant to put it in the price and be done with the charade. Tipping if the worst. The guy at the shoe store who goes out of his way to be excellent isn't expecting a tip. Makes no sense.
The guy at the shoe store likely makes commission. My brother in law made 60K selling shoes at Nordstrom. You think he'd rather have a flat $12 an hour wage? Heck no. Servers should always make faaarrr more in tips than they would if given a standard wage.
Load More Replies...Omg I know those mannequins! They’re the ones that the devil uses, right? The ones to scare THE LIVING HELL OUT OF US?!
SHUT UP #$%@ NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU SAY YOU @#$@#!!!!!
Load More Replies...As an ex Chef all I can say to servers is.................Your food is dying in the window!!!!!
So the customer gets cold food and then complains like you prepared it cold.
Load More Replies...This was one of the better posts I’ve seen. Funny and informative from either perspective. And some great comments! I don’t think I’ve liked so many comments in one post before!
You ever wonder why you're "how come they get the good tables or they get the good clients or they get the good tips" and you're stuck giggling at stupid customer demeaning server memes? It's because you think these meme's are funny or justified. You get out of serving what you put into it. The good servers treat EVERY client as their best and the poor servers are upset when their work calendar with one extra shift in two weeks comes out. If you don't like being a server - get the f**k out - there are 8 wanna be's for every position - so move along now.
Both of my adult children & one grandchild all work at restaurants or bars...I understand all of these...I always taught them to take pride in whatever they do! As a result they ( for the most part ), enjoy what they do & always keep their customers in mind...except for the unruly or disrespectful !
I can't believe they didn't have a meme on when someone you hate sits in your section.
I ask for the manager and let him/her know the name (if possible) of the wait staff and bussers who are calm, professional, helpful etc. with a difficult customer. Saw 3 19/20 year olds stay polite and smiling to a nasty, loud rude asshat in 3 separate encounters one evening. As waitress calmly walked him through sliding his own credit card through the on-table card reader, she explained that it was asking what % tip he wanted to add to the bill. None, he said, because the government already takes too much of his money. She smiled and asked him to sign the bill. I pointed out to the manager that the stereotype is that youth are lazy and rude, but his young staff were awesome. Also, the waitress was owed a tip for the $75 bill.
Working as a kitchen manager, who has worked up to this position, I can totally relate to a lot of these! Made me laugh so much!! Some even reminded me of my shift today! Haha
