Living with another person under the same roof requires compromise. After all, everyone wants their home to be an oasis from the stresses of the outside world. Not to mention all the responsibilities you have to share to keep everything in order, such as bills, chores, and other maintenance tasks that demand mutual understanding and cooperation.
But apparently, that's too much to ask from some people. There's a subreddit called 'Bad Roommates' and it's full of tales about the gross, the annoying, and the psychotic. So we at Bored Panda decided to compile some of the most memorable ones to remind you just how important it is to find someone that you can get along with. Otherwise, you might end up in a situation that seriously tests your patience and sanity.

I a housecleaner, and I rarely run in to people THIS disgusting. Only a few times. This is right up there with the middle age, married man whose wife was wheelchair bound for 6 months due to an accident. So his wife was unable to clean, and by the time I got there, I had to use a RAZOR BLADE TO SCRAPE THE P*SS OFF THE TOILET! And I couldn't even get it. I threw away every piece of "equipment" I used on that toilet.

my uncle did this to my family. we straightened him out by telling him that we’d send him to the military if he didn’t clean up his act. when he didn’t, my dad (his brother) took him to recruitment and they REJECTED MY UNCLE. MY DAD IS IN THE MILITARY. he cleaned himself up after that.

Omg, I rented house with 5 other friends. We had one meeting together to agree on rules and how to share cleaning of common space. And except few incidents we had 0 issues. And I brought basically all kitchen appliances and dishes. If someone needed something, he just asked. I'm glad i was this lucky. Where this people in this thread find this audacity to even think that other people should live with them in one space...

I was a bad roommate once. I didn't do my dishes right away. We didn't have a working dishwasher, So I would wait until I had enough to do a load, use the dishwasher as a drying rack. I was told it made me hard to live with. I was the only one with a job. I was the only one paying all of our bills. I was the only one who cleaned the communal spaces. I was the only one who dusted, the only one who cleaned the bathroom, or vacuumed. I was the only one who scooped the yard. I used to get up before work and clean the entire house of beer cans and mess her and my ex left from staying up all night. She removed all the smoke detectors and vaped inside until you couldn't see. She burned so many candles in her room that even though it was freshly painted it was black from soot. She never cleaned her room, not once in years. I'm pretty sure she was sleeping with my boyfriend. But I was definitely the toxic roommate. Just look at that full sink.

I'm afraid this will be my kids. No matter how many times I point out condiments spilled on the counter, food wrapper bits left on the floor, or dishes left all over the house, they seem physically incapable of seeing it. Because they have severe ADHD I can't even tell them all the things. I have to tell them one thing at a time, wait for their brains to return to earth to do the task, then tell them the next thing. Soon I will follow through on my threat to leave their messes on their pillows.

And my boyfriend wonders why I refuse to move in with him after he buys a house and has his friend move in to help him with the mortgage. I live alone and will never have a roommate again unless it's only a significant other.

I am a total clean freak, my son even calls me a "psycho with a dustmop". I am so thankful I've never had to have a roommate. My husband is very tidy as well. I went to visit my daughter when she & her boyfriend got their first place. OMFG, I couldn't believe it. They had only been there about a week and there were already stains on the (recently cleaned) carpet. The sink was overflowing with dishes, c**p on all of the counters & kitchen table, the stove was puke inducing and the refrigerator already had spills and gunk on the shelves. AFTER ONE WEEK. He worked and she was home all day. Yes, she had a baby to look after - that is absolutely no f*cking excuse to live like pigs. I was beyond disgusted so I offered to help her clean up, which meant I cleaned up. A few weeks later and it was exactly the same. From then on she had to come visit me. I just couldn't take it.

I always knew I never wanted to have room mates, and all of the above are confirmation that I was right. Friends of ours gave another mutual friend a room when he was kicked out, and they eventually had to ask him to leave, as he never paid them rent like he said he would and when he left, they found mouse droppings all around the room from all the food and packaging he had had in there.

I recently had a roommate who would use my stuff CONSTANTLY and didn't think I'd notice. For the most part I didn't care since I'd stay at my bf's for the majority of the week but I bought some Ben n Jerry's ice cream (rare treat for me) and I was looking forward to eating it when I got home from my bfs... yeah it wasn't there and I was PISSED. It was like 2am when I confronted her and asked if she ate the ice cream or not. She got the deer in the headlights "oh... I thought I bought it and it's the one I always buy" bullsh*t, never seen it in the freezer. She said she'd replace it but I told her to give me cash right then and there since I didn't trust her to replace it. Then she tried to frame herself as an amazing person to the landlords (who also lived in the house) and that she did it on accident but gave me money. They knew she was full of sh*t lol.

I loathe and despise communal living. I am not cut out for the invasion of privacy, the mess and the feeling that you can't relax in your own space. I shared for 2 years at uni and never again until I got married. I saved to ensure none of my children had to share after their first year of university and their mental health was much better than mine at the time because they could be as clean or untidy as they liked.

I had to live in a house of multiple occupancy HMO in the UK when I was in my 40s. The house was lovely the landlord was fair but the roommates were 20 somethings who knew nothing about personal space, good manners and cleaning up after themselves. When I complained to the landlord about there being no room for my things in the shared kitchen, he came by with stickers to allocate shelves in the fridge, drawers in deep freezer and kitchen cupboards with the room numbers. I've picked all the best ones for myself, moved everything off and off the shelves, the freezer drawers and cupboards that didn't belong to me and left them to sort out the rest. One girl had her boyfriend living with us even though it was no couples allowed so when I reported him to my landlord, he was banned from visiting. Said boyfriend also rigged the coin operated washer and dryer to run without paying... Dodgy wiring that was a fire hazard. Thank goodness I moved out shortly afterwards.

I let my SISTER move in after college. Now, we had experience living together, obviously. We had the usual sister issues but we got along okay. I knew she wasn't a slob. I only had a few house rules. She broke every one in the first two weeks. I was so bloody relieved when a guy she dated briefly in college showed up again. I knew she was in love before she did, and we have gotten along just fine since she got married and moved to another state. At this point, I figure if I ever pick up another SO, I want us to live in easy walking distance, even next door, but once the kids are launched I don't want to live with anybody ever again!

I wasn't a messy roommate because I so hated being a roommate at all that I'd never eat at home. Probably would have saved money by living alone and cooking instead of getting takeout every night
