We often hear about crazy names people give to their babies, or names they were gifted by their very creative parents. But it turns out that pets too can have names that lift eyebrows—if not of their fellow animals, then surely their vets’. Well, according to this viral Twitter thread, at least.
It all started when Brittany Means, a writer and editor from Albuquerque, NM, shared this tweet: “One of my greatest joys in life is when Jeff calls the vet to make an appointment and they ask for his name, and he says, Jeff. Then, they ask for our cat's name, and I watch him gather his strength before he tells them, Baby Jeff.”
This hit all too close to home to many pet owners out there who took the thread as an opportunity to share the ensued hilarity behind their furballs’ names. Especially when it’s time for a vet’s appointment.

Bored Panda spoke with Molly DeVoss, a certified feline training and behavior specialist with a vision to reduce the number of cats euthanized in shelters, who runs the Cat Behavior Solutions agency. We asked Molly how important, in her opinion, the name we give to our cat is and she said that a cat’s name is more important to you than others.
“So pick something you love – or something that makes you giggle,” Molly suggested. She also added that the cat doesn’t speak English so he has no idea of the meaning behind his name. “Cats will learn their names fairly quickly and it is an opportunity for you to get their attention on cue.”
For those who are wondering if cats actually recognize their names, and Molly confirmed that cats indeed do recognize them. For that reason, “if you ever decide to change it, try to pick something that has the same number of syllables and ends in the same sound,” the cat behavior specialist explained.
When my son was little he loved his stuffed animals, still does. I tried for a couple weeks when he was maybe 3 to ask him if Ellie the elephant was a boy or girl. He looked at me like I was dumb and insisted Ellie was an elephant! Duh, mom! What kind of question is that? Lol. So tell Brian the cat that she is lovely and is clearly a cat.
A couple I knew (he is a doctor and she is a nurse) took in a cat, and named it Missy. They were responible cat parents, and gave Missy the Pill every week, as one did before sterilisation was a thing. Did I mention they were both highly medically educated? Well, after several years, a visiter suddenly noticed that Missy had a nice big fluffy pair of balls protuding from under the tail!
Well Missy didn't have any kittens so I guess it worked 🤣🤣🤣

In high school, my family had a dog we named Clydesdale. She was this big, goofy, floofy, clumsy horse of a dog that we called Clyde for short. The goodest of girls. I miss her.
Amusingly enough, there is story of a couple who adopted a stray cat that they named Kevin. Kevin turned out to pregnant but they kept her name.

I named a cat Sadie thinking it was a girl. Only was told it was a boy when he was in his teens! Kept the name. (Two vets missed this! I went with what one vet told me, and then other vet didn't check. Third vet checked!)
My uncle found a baby stray that he had to bottle and named her Asia...Later the vet urge him to change the cat's name because the "poor cat" is a boy!!! My brother had a cat who had kittens. He had promised his friend Rodger that he would name one of the kittens after him. All of the litter were female. So when it was time to spay all the cats we had a vet tech sit him down and whisper "Rodger is a girl". We whispered back "we know, but don't tell her".
That’s funny because I took in two semi-feral kittens this past summer who were abandoned by their mother under my neighbour’s porch - a calico and an orange and white one. The kitten looked exactly like this wandering barn cat I sometimes feed and who I named Junior, so MIL dearest suggested JJ (for Junior’s junior). Well, imagine my surprise when the vet said the kitten was a she! She still looks like a boy cat though and is bigger than her sister. Now we call her Rusty (my husband’s suggestion). The calico is Spicy since she was super spicy when I went to catch her and bit good on the thumb. Now she is my precious sweetheart.

We brought a stray in and my husband and I both insisted we could not keep another cat. We called her "The Cat" because "if you name them, they are yours". After we put an ad in the paper looking for a home for her, my husband said he was going to call her T.C. for short and I said "How about Gray C.?" (because she was a gray cat). I hope I've both delighted and tortured the employees at my vet with my wacky cat names over the years. I had a gray girl for 20 years named Wintressia. It was pronounced "win-tress-ee-uh" but the vet techs always struggled with it. Eventually we all just called her "Win-win" XD

I feel that it is similar to a show dog having a registered pedigree name and a "call name", which is the short version we call them everyday XD A cat must have three names! (At least!)

I tried to be clever with my black cat. Her name is Kohl, which is another name for the mineral stibnite, which ancient Egyptians (and other cultures) used as makeup (if you look at Egyptian art, kohl is the black stuff around their eyes.) It is still used today by many cultures! I'm also a rock nerd, so having a name that is sort of geologic in nature delighted me. Of course, it's PRONOUNCED the same way as "coal", so everyone thinks I'm just a scrub who named her black cat a totally stereotypical black cat name XD

I had a cat we named Al Qaeda Marie. She would attack and then hide in her box fort. (It was 2003 so they were talked about a lot more than they are now.) The vets refused to call her Al Qaeda, so we ended up calling her Allie Marie. It used to crack me up to see them fumble over her name.
We would feed this one stray cat and one day she came around with kittens. The kittens were polydactyl and I named them Sechs, Sieben and Acht (6,7 and 8 in German) to match their extra beans.

we have a Kareltje de grote (Kareltje the great) A red tabby with the additude of his namesake. He was found on a German autobahn in the middel of nowhere. Just a few weeks old, scared, dehydrated (it was 35 celcuis outside). A friend of us found hi and took him home. Only to find out that her boyfriend really f*****g hates cats (and he got locked.. the cat, not the boyfriend.. but he got locked in a catcrate) So we got him from this friend and took this bundle of chaotic energy with us.
Poor Thing. Best cat ever. He appeared as a small kitten, managed to evade animal control, and sat on our back deck otherwise. My mother would shout, "Could someone feed that poor thing." Turned into, "Feed Poor Thing." It was his name after awhile. Big tough tom cat who wore a big bright red bow at Christmas proudly. Made sure you noticed (if he wanted it off, he could have easily removed it). Loved by all.
We had the most gorgeous, elegant cat with an innocent-sounding girly name. She was hella dangerous though, and after a few mishaps the vet put a sign on her cage: GLOVES! The other cat in the house was fiercely protective of her, even if there was absolutely no need. His name was Mao.

I once found a stray cat. He was severely infested with stomach worms and made his entry to my home by puking them up behind the computer in all the wires. (Obviously after a hard and from my side bloody fight to catch him) He was named Syntax error, because he more or less made one. Later on he was renamed Syntax Ok because he started to function normally.

When I was living in the Middle East in the late 90s, I found 3 very young filthy hungry ferals. I hadn't had a cat before and figured that one would be plenty of work. So I picked the one that seemed the healthiest to me and gave her an angelic name: Misha-el, which means "next to god." I plopped her into a warm bath and cleaned her up. I already had bought a baby chick because I was feeling rather lonely. Misha and Charlie got on with each other right away. When I rescued my cat from a bad home situation her name was Frankie. But then the vets would confuse the name thinking she was a boy. So, I changed her name to Miss Frankie. Then, I dont know why, I started calling her Miss Frankfurter. Now she is definitely Miss Frankfurter.

14 years ago I adopted a black cat... i'm from Italy and it was the time when Berlusconi did the unfunny joke about Obama that was " a bit tanned".. the volunteer that found my cat called it Obama, I didn't like the name but he answered when called Obi, so he became Obi wan kenobi..or Obi.. or Bobo..or Bobinski..

At 25 I had a cat named pumpkin and found a cat that I named Poopers, because I thought it was a funny word. In an absolutely unforeseen turn of events, in the next 6 years my mom met and married a man originally from Belgium. After the wedding, I go with them to meet the family. I spend 2 weeks meeting tons of elderly Flemish people, many asked about my pets and I said their names are Pumpkin and Poopers. They either laughed or gave me a weird look, which is the same reaction here in the US. Very end of the trip, at a dinner party, the host passes out pornographic shot glasses. Everyone is laughing and talking in Flemish, at which time it comes to my attention that Poopers is something sexual in Flemish. I'm not entirely clear on the translation. But I was mortified, replaying all of the conversations with people I had met over the weeks.
I found an abandoned 6? week old kitten. I named him Zeke. About four or five months later, it dawned on me to look. Her name officially became Zakia, but I always called her Zeke.

I heard a mewing near my car, and a thorough investigation revealed a gray kitten in the engine compartment.

We had a dog many years ago named Shadow (which are black), but was all white (we got him when he was 5 and didn't want to confuse him by changing his name). Now we have an all black dog (with a small white stripe on her head) named Misty (normal thought of as a whiter color), short name for Black Mist, though. We call her a Little Skunker when she misbehaves.
i love seeing all the cat names! i currently have: Tac, Caboose, One-Eyed Willie, Miaka, and (Pig) Penny. i have had: Ani, Charlie, Conner Baby, Maya, Nibbler, Kpu. Kpu is not a typo, pronounced Kippoo. when i was a kid, we had a cat named Shithead and another later named FI (short for F**k It). We also had a cat named Kitten, and a Steve.
I tried to come up with a beautiful name for my weird little kitty I found in the woods, but "Baby Bones" is what stuck. She loves her name, loves hearing her name but I suspect the vet secretly hates having to say her full name out loud.
I do post about my cats on occasion - Void and Orange. Erm...yes, their actual names are indeed Void and Orange ^^; Void is a solid black kitty and Orange is a ginger tabby, that is why they are named that.
My mom and I named my first cat she got me at age 5, Cuddles Fifi Grey Whiskers. A year later we moved from a big city to a small town and I made a new friend in Grade One, who perplexed me when she said her gerbil had the exact same name. I mean, how’s that possible? Who calls a gerbil who bites “Cuddles?” I still think they were putting me on. My Cuddles live to age 20.

I had a cat we named Al Qaeda Marie. She would attack and then hide in her box fort. (It was 2003 so they were talked about a lot more than they are now.) The vets refused to call her Al Qaeda, so we ended up calling her Allie Marie. It used to crack me up to see them fumble over her name.

we have a Kareltje de grote (Kareltje the great) A red tabby with the additude of his namesake. He was found on a German autobahn in the middel of nowhere. Just a few weeks old, scared, dehydrated (it was 35 celcuis outside). A friend of us found hi and took him home. Only to find out that her boyfriend really f*****g hates cats (and he got locked.. the cat, not the boyfriend.. but he got locked in a catcrate) So we got him from this friend and took this bundle of chaotic energy with us.
Poor Thing. Best cat ever. He appeared as a small kitten, managed to evade animal control, and sat on our back deck otherwise. My mother would shout, "Could someone feed that poor thing." Turned into, "Feed Poor Thing." It was his name after awhile. Big tough tom cat who wore a big bright red bow at Christmas proudly. Made sure you noticed (if he wanted it off, he could have easily removed it). Loved by all.
We had the most gorgeous, elegant cat with an innocent-sounding girly name. She was hella dangerous though, and after a few mishaps the vet put a sign on her cage: GLOVES! The other cat in the house was fiercely protective of her, even if there was absolutely no need. His name was Mao.

I once found a stray cat. He was severely infested with stomach worms and made his entry to my home by puking them up behind the computer in all the wires. (Obviously after a hard and from my side bloody fight to catch him) He was named Syntax error, because he more or less made one. Later on he was renamed Syntax Ok because he started to function normally.

When I was living in the Middle East in the late 90s, I found 3 very young filthy hungry ferals. I hadn't had a cat before and figured that one would be plenty of work. So I picked the one that seemed the healthiest to me and gave her an angelic name: Misha-el, which means "next to god." I plopped her into a warm bath and cleaned her up. When I rescued my cat from a bad home situation her name was Frankie. But then the vets would confuse the name thinking she was a boy. So, I changed her name to Miss Frankie. Then, I dont know why, I started calling her Miss Frankfurter. Now she is definitely Miss Frankfurter.

In an absolutely unforeseen turn of events, in the next 6 years my mom met and married a man originally from Belgium. After the wedding, I go with them to meet the family. I spend 2 weeks meeting tons of elderly Flemish people, many asked about my pets and I said their names are Pumpkin and Poopers. They either laughed or gave me a weird look, which is the same reaction here in the US. Very end of the trip, at a dinner party, the host passes out pornographic shot glasses. Everyone is laughing and talking in Flemish, at which time it comes to my attention that Poopers is something sexual in Flemish. I'm not entirely clear on the translation. But I was mortified, replaying all of the conversations with people I had met over the weeks.

We had a dog many years ago named Shadow (which are black), but was all white (we got him when he was 5 and didn't want to confuse him by changing his name). Now we have an all black dog (with a small white stripe on her head) named Misty (normal thought of as a whiter color), short name for Black Mist, though. We call her a Little Skunker when she misbehaves.

I tried to come up with a beautiful name for my weird little kitty I found in the woods, but "Baby Bones" is what stuck. She loves her name, loves hearing her name but I suspect the vet secretly hates having to say her full name out loud.
