“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is one of the most incorrect sayings of all time. Idiotic opinions, fallacies, and outright untruths are all, unfortunately, broadcasted over the internet for everyone to see, meaning that all of us have to see, hear, and read the very worst words and ideas humans can put together.

The “Facepalm” internet group gathers all those moments when people really did or said something so unbelievable that it caused a visceral reaction to all onlookers. And through the magic of the internet, it can reach you too. So be sure to upvote your “favorites” and comment your thoughts below.

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Aether-0917 Report

The oldest use of the word “facepalm” (but not the actual, physical action) dates back to the early days of the internet. In 1996, where the first netizens mentioned it in a variety of posts about everyday life. This points to the fact that this phrase was in the popular lexicon earlier, as the posters do not clarify what the word means and use it nonchalantly.

However, the actual post, of holding one’s face in your palm, is relatively old, and found in statues and sculptures going back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Normally, it was associated with more serious loss, like Henri Vidal’s Caïn, depicting the biblical figure mourning the death of his own brother, who he killed.

Due to the internet and the general ubiquity of this emotion, the facepalm remains popular, to such a degree that there is even a facepalm emoji (Unicode U+1F926) and a vast library of stock images depicting this action. While commonly reaction images of humans facepalming were used, one can now even find animals doing the gesture, most likely by accident, but it’s always fun to imagine a cat actually facepalming.

For those that see something not worth a full facepalm, as it is a bit dramatic at times, you can use the good old disappointed head shake, that one’s grandparents will tactically deploy when they see anything that confuses them. Over text, one can quickly and easily communicate their disappointment with the good old acronym smh (shaking my head) which is actually older than good old facepalm.

On the other hand, should one need to deploy stronger language, there is always the trusty face desk aka the head desk. While we do not recommend you actually do this, be sure to upvote the posts that go beyond a facepalm. This is a stronger emotion, one so visceral that the victim wants to physically bash the thing they just read or heard right out of their head.

The reality is that there have always been people who might cause us to facepalm. Bad decisions and horrible opinions are deeply human and probably existed before language. So it’s overall a net positive that we have methods to immediately “get it out of our system” when someone does something so deeply idiotic that it makes us feel bad by proxy. As long as we don’t facepalm too hard.

Similarly, while the internet allows us to see more facepalm-inducing moments, on the flip side, it lets us publicly shame people with ideas this bad and it communicates to others who might have similar ideas that in reality, they are wrong and should keep it to themselves. Someone is not a bad person for being wrong but sticking by an objectively terrible opinion even when presented with contrary evidence is pretty childish. If you want to keep facepalming, Bored Panda has got you covered, check out our other article on this topic here

Or, provide free medical care to pregnant women, and children. And food. And domestic violence counseling. And PTSD counseling. And free caskets and free burial for the mothers who die due to pregnancy complications. And if those embryos are so important to you, why not a free casket and a burial for all the miscarriages, too?

I don't want them to foster. I have friends who foster a whole brood of kids and they are wonderful foster figures BECAUSE they are so amazingly generous and kind and non-judgemental. They don't make the kids feel like they need to be different, regardless of who they are they meet them where they're at. Whereas the kind of people who s**t on women and our reproductive choices... they couldn't be that for foster kids. Those kids deserve better than being shoved in a home with some jumped up judgemental fundamentalist couple, especially one who were partially just using the kids as a p**n in their BS pro-life campaign.

The foster care number is hard to drop as the goal is to reunite, not adopt. Have friends that has been trying to adopt their foster kids for years, but as long as the parents dont sign off, it isnt gonna happen. And could you send some adoption kids to Sweden? They would be so welcome! Here we dont have virtually any kids to adopt nationally at all, only abroad adoptions. And they are so few we only have one adoption agency left (for good reasons, many of the adopted kids from Chile, China Korea etc was kidnapped and now the real adoptees usually gets homes within families. So about 3x more in line waiting for adopt then adoptions made each year, and that is with a lot of people giving up on the costly process with low hopes for a kid. Now most do embryo adoption or surrogacy instead of waiting for years and maybe if they are lucky have a older kids with medical needs

So the foetus gets all the “protection” in the world, but as soon as it’s born, it’s “not my problem”, until it’s 18, when they can … put it to death for committing crimes it was forced to commit because it was poor, uneducated, unwell, or had medical needs that couldn’t be met (because it was badly educated, so was poor because it couldn’t get a job, so couldn’t pay for medical care - that even people with jobs can’t afford). So the child turned to drugs. Which landed it in jail. Where someone threatened it with a shiv, so they retaliated and killed their aggressor- and their 10-year term for drugs becomes a death sentence for murder. At which point, the Republicans claim they’ve “protected the community” from another evil-doing degenerate poor person. Pathetic, short-sighted, interfering fools.

I do just want to add that adoption is very expensive and adoption through foster care is difficult. It takes a lot of patience and love to adopt a kid who has been through the foster care system because of their trauma. That being said, I think anyone who is in the position to adopt should.

If we can empty out animal shelters of animals needing good homes with adoption drives, we can certainly do something to empty out the foster care and adoption services of children needing good homes, ffs. If we don’t right the wrong of republicans trying to abolish Roe v Wade anytime soon, we will HAVE to. Unless we start doing free spay and neuter clinics for humans who don’t want to have children.

There are people who would do this and I (F57) would have, if I had been able to when younger. BUT, parents, doctors, friends, strangers, co-workers, relatives, will tell them that you will change youlr mind when you get older. You will wish you had someone to take care of you, visit you, spend time with you, etc. I never saw myself as a parent when I was growing up. Never saw myself as a married person growing up. I got pregnant in and we gave her up for adoption. We got married after giving her up for adoption. Two emotionally hurting people should not get married. Marriage lasted almost 7 and a half years. I made sure I never got pregnant again and have been happily single since then. Not everyone is meant to be a parent or should be. It is the hardest and most important job in the world. It is so easy to keep from getting pregnant: abstinence, make sure you take your birth control and he wears a condom every time, IUDs, not getting drunk, etc. Women say they want control over their bodies and that includes being able to kill their children while they are still growing inside them. The fact that you choose to have an abortion shows you are not mature enough. If you were mentally and emotionally mature enough, you would have not gotten pregnant in the first place. People with common sense will understand I am not speaking about rape here. That is a whole different topic.
