Living in climates where winters are cold means a few things: you gotta have one hell of a warm blanket, a huge cup to keep yourself on a constant stream of boiling hot beverages, and patience to get through the coldness and darkness you never asked for.

On the other hand, it’s the season of ugly sweaters and stay-in nights with Netflix binges that make you feel like Kevin McCallister from Home Alone even despite the fact you’re thirty or so.

So today we are taking you on a photographic ride into the freezing temperatures that are snow and ice-castle approved. Some of them may make you shiver just by looking at them, so get yourself that warm blanket we already talked about!

Psst! More winter-inspired pics showing things in well beyond low temperatures can be found in our previous feature right here.

About 20 years ago I remember taking our cat out to see the snow. It was around 28 inches of fresh UT powder. Super dry and fluffy snow. I put her on top of the snow to walk around and she sank to the bottom and totally disappeared. My dad and I began hurriedly digging with our hands. It took about 30 seconds to find her and it seemed like forever. She came “swimming” up in a sheer panic, obviously less than impressed. I’ll never forget that moment. 😹

A silver thaw makes everything pretty. I've seen stuff like this chicken wire and cyclone fences do that. Also bare trees. It is really destructive from the weight of the ice breaking branches and power lines but it is also very pretty

For many, the freezing temperatures of winter are an annual source of dread and discomfort. But for some, sub-zero temperatures are just another part of life.

For the indigenous people of the Arctic, life in freezing temperatures has been the norm for centuries. The Inuit, Yupik, and Inupiaq of the Arctic Circle have adapted to the harsh conditions by developing clothes and tools made from the materials they have at hand, such as animal hides and bone. They have also developed unique ways of cooking and hunting to survive in cold environments. In other parts of the world, people have also developed ways to cope with the cold.

Lol. Used to have a cat that would scream at us until we gave in, no matter how many times we showed/warned him about the snow. So we would open the door and lightly drop him into the snow (from like a foot in the air). Every time, he would do that "oh S****' freeze in place, then shoot right back in the door, only for the whole process to repeat itself a day or two later (if we were lucky it would be a day or two later).

In Siberia, the Yakut people have developed a unique form of yurt, called a chum, made from animal hide to provide shelter from the cold. In the Himalayas, high-altitude communities have adapted to the cold by wearing thick layers of clothing and using yak and sheep wool for blankets.

Speaking of Siberia, on January 17th, the city of Yakutsk, notoriously known for being one of the coldest places in the world where people live, saw an abnormally long cold snap. The temperatures here fell to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit.

"You can't fight it," one resident dressed in two scarves and multiple layers of gloves, hats and hoods told Reuters when asked about the cold here. "You either adjust and dress accordingly or you suffer."

In Montreal, after a particularly nasty ice storm, the police cordoned off whole sections of streets and roads because the ice falling off the sides of buildings and overpasses was up to 5 cm thick and a meter or more across. One person was killed after being struck by it. Was horrible.

Although the eastern United States has had very mild weather since that late December cold blast, there is the potential for a significant pattern change toward the end of January, says Ian Livingston, a forecaster/photographer and information lead for the Capital Weather Gang. Key to this change would be the development of high pressure over western North America, which would both block storms from hitting California and potentially create a pathway for the exceptional cold in Siberia to cross into the Western Hemisphere.

In theory you should get better value gas at that temperature anyway. The extreme cold will make the gas denser, and since you're paying by volume rather than mass, you get a higher mass of gas than you would if it was warmer. Although possibly it might not burn as efficiently, negating the savings.

I put on a dry suit and kayak the rivers around my house after a big winter rain or after a thaw. End up looking like this. Especially back when I had the same hair and beard this guy is sporting. So quiet on the river in the winter. Especially after a big snow.

Never did anything that extreme, but I can relate to that peaceful feeling you're talking about. It's like going out in the city at 4 AM when nobody else is around, or being the first person to walk across fresh snow in a city park in the morning. That makes me feel more privileged than costly luxuries.

Doesn't this indicate a lack of insulation in the roof? The heat from inside the house warms the bottom layer of snow enough to allow it to melt and the weight of the frozen snow above it causes it to then slide down the roof.

This has less to do with the cold (below freezing is enough), and more to do with humidity. You e.g. often find these frosty outlines in the vicinity of rivers and lakes, or after there's been fog.

Not all cows want to be in a barn. Mine will only go in if it’s cold, windy & raining all at once. If it’s just one or the other, they prefer to be outside. The horses almost never go inside. We are in Ohio, we have a lot of trees that don’t drop leaves until spring, they prefer sleeping under them at night and standing under them sometimes when it rains or snow. When an animal has ice or snow on them, it’s a good sign that they are well insulated.

High winds during severe cold is the worst. Normally my house is quite well sealed against drafts, but 40mph winds press in past the seals on my doors and windows. Around christmastime We had -15F and high winds, I gave up and stapled moving blankets over all my west-facing windows. It made a bigger difference than I thought it would.
