Oh, this is great. We've been saving our 'tips' (it's actually the take a penny/leave a penny jar, but a lot of people assume it's tips) for years to help the needy, but can't figure out the best way to go about that. I wonder what the setup is here, how do they find the recipients and such?

Or it could just as easily be one of their regular employees and they've just found a good way to raise tips by selling a sob story. Maybe I'm just getting cynical, but there is no indication here that this is going to an unrelated third party, so my suspicions are immediately raised.

This is a very good idea and I hope others copy this idea. I once saw a man tending a Community garden and my bloke and I stopped to say good morning and ask how he was doing, he angrily replied 'how do you think I am doing' then came over and shook a tip can that suggested a £5.00 or £10 tip. I would happily tip this for a worthy cause.

I can't decide: would this be a better idea than supporting the workers? (ignoring the fact that greedy companies would use this as an excuse to underpay their workers)

To be great at something, it's not about doing something extraordinary once; it's about mastering the everyday basics and doing them consistently over a long time. Greatness is often simpler than it appears from the outside.

Cute ... where's the bin? I have a whole box full of these cute extras, which came with gifts, which serve no other purpose. However, it feels not okay to bin them, because somebody was paid poorly to make hundreds of them on a tight schedule and wasting material for this is not good, too.

If a person has a hankering for a specific kind of food, it's common for the person to do an internet search of "_________ food near me." In this case, Thai. This restaurant, meeting the search criteria perfectly, will be first after the sponsored ads.

So, what went wrong? People often blame the task being too hard, their lack of talent, or not enough discipline. These reasons sound reasonable, but each of us has strengths and discipline in different areas. So, what's the real issue?

The problem usually comes down to not fully understanding what we're trying to achieve, which means we aren't ready for what it actually takes to succeed. We often have big ideas about what it means to be great or master something, and this can lead us to either avoid trying or quit too soon.

I remember wooden escalators in shops like Woolworth's when I was a kid. There are still a few on the London Underground (or there were when I lived there, may have been replaced by now I suppose.)

In the London Underground, they were all replaced after the infamous Kings Cross fire in 1987 with 31 fatalities, or at least they should have been.

The first escalator in England was in Harrods in 1898. Brandy was provided because they thought women would be overcome but they enjoyed it so much they kept going up and down, probably to get more brandy.

Jiji, are you sure that people at the safe injection sites actually help the addicts inject the drugs?? Reason I ask is because I thought safe injection sites were a safe place for addicts to inject the drugs under the supervision of a medical professional, to look for signs of overdose. These places also usually provide clean and sterile materials to help curb diseases and such. I've never heard of these sites having their staff inject street drugs into the clients. Thanks for any input you may have!

British music festivals routinely have a testing station where you can take your substances to be checked for purity. If they find a 'bad batch' they will announce it over the speakers so that other people have the information they need. Every year young people's lives are saved by this simple process.

We had something similar for ecstasy in the late 80s/early 90s rave scene and they were everywhere. Bad actors would often manufacture bunk E tablets made with heroin & speed rather than MDMA & caffeine, which is what gave ecstasy and then molly the reputation for being deadly. The problem was pervasive at parties in Holland to San Francisco to London to Mumbai and who knows what was in the c**p at the Ko Tao/Ko Samui full moon parties. Luckily, there was a strip test easily acquired to test all of one’s party favors. This possibility has been around seemingly forever & should be ubiquitous with opioid dependent folks, along with Narcan.

Yes, counterfeit prescription pills are becoming an increasingly large fentanyl OD problem. With the simple test strips, they crush one pill and test the powder in a slurry with water. Fancier, expensive digital testing can do the same thing without destroying the sample pills.

A friend of ours visited a store like this as they have social anxiety. The store put produce right next to the electric gate inside, their partner stopped to look and and when they took a step back to see what they were looking at an alarm sounded and they were confronted by security assuming they could be shoplifting!!! ...they haven't shopped at that store since and never got an apology.

Hmm... That doesn't look like a regular quarter. It looks more like the coins with milled out interiors which various spy organizations used to transport microfilm (and some still use for smuggling micro-SD cards). I say that because it seems to have circular milling marks.

At my job, we recently got a lactation pod, which is a little booth people can go in to have privacy for breastfeeding or pumping. There's a keypad lock on it, and the default pass code it came with was...you guessed it. Sadly, someone else who works there found this to be in poor taste and had it changed. If I ever need to give somebody the code to use it, I'll have to look it up--I know they picked something easy to remember, like 1234 or 1111 or something, but not as easy to remember as 80085.

Shower? On a plane? "Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain. We're experiencing a little turbulence, so I'm going to flip on the 'FASTEN SEATBELT' sign. Please return to your seat and buckle up." Out runs a naked person with their head covered in suds running around with their arms straight out because they can't see.

I remember the first time we used a "First Class Lounge", we got there and one of the employee's could tell it was our first time. So she showed us the bar, buffet (all of it free), electronic chargers, etc. And also the restrooms which had showers and fresh towels in case you are on a layover and want to clean up. I thought "don't know when I can do this again with the deal I got, but, next time I fly I will consider this more closely".

Poor little fellow, it it frightened and alone. This type of birds needs at least one other to feel happy and safe. And the cord hangs too low, tailfeathers should not be bend. "Like other members of the genus Aratinga, the sun conure is very social and typically occurs in large flocks of 15 to 30 individuals. They rarely leave the flock, but when they get separated from the group, they squawk and scream in a high-pitched voice, which can carry for hundreds of yards, allowing individuals to communicate with their flock and return to them." So this is not cute, but pure torture for the bird.

As a parrot owner, I don't think this parrot looks scared. No, he's not about to take a nap, but he's attentive and enjoying the activity around him. Yes, the low cord is not ideal, the owner should move it up to the next row. Lastly, it is true that conures are flock birds, but they can bond with their owners and, if they're given adequate attention, they can be very happy living with their humans. The fact that this parrot owner is actually taking his bird with him to the mall suggests to me that the parrot gets plenty of attention. He gets to go out with his owner and see people and activity instead of sitting bored at home.

There's no connection between "christian" flags (whatever they might be - a tool of indoctrination and exclusion if it's anything at all) and a flag such as the Pride flag which is all about promoting tolerance, understanding, and love. Promoting tolerance, understanding, and love is EXACTLY what elementary schools are for.

Here’s my problem with what Kelsey has to say: Gender identity is a social construct; something we’ve made up. Sexual identity, as far as we know & as much as we’re learning, is an innate human quality. It’s comparable to race, a little less is than ethnic background. We don’t legislate genetics in this way, so none are inherently political. It’s not politics. Religion is a non-starter, because it can be twisted for bigoted agendas. None are inherently religion-focused. In a primarily white suburban, where they have been hate crimes against people of color, it is absolutely OK and inclusive to fly a flag representative of people of color. If a Jewish minority school was dealing with covert, invisible oppression of Jews, it would be OK to fly a flag identified with Jewish people. As long as the flag doesn’t represent a minority that has historically subjugated and oppressed the minority, it’s an issue. It’s not religious and it’s not political, we can test our own homophobia…

The idea of "race" or "ethnicity" in human terms is another social construct that we've made up. There are no "races" - just our perception of such. From what I've read, modern forms of racism didn't exist before the Atlantic slave trade and 18th/19th century European imperialism, modern racism being invented to justify both practices (i.e., the wicked lie that white folks are better than darker skinned folks). Thinking like that just didn't exist in the days of the Roman empire. As far as the Romans were concerned, the division was between Roman citizens and everyone else. They didn't care about skin colour.

    Forrest Hobbs

The Progress Pride flag in essence indicates support for human rights, and for challenging prejudice and bigotry. It's exactly the sort of thing that belongs in all schools. We mustn't leave it up to parents if only because far too many of them teach their children their own prejudices and bigotries, passing on ignorance and hatred to the next generation. Having schools that teach children right from wrong, about bigotry and discrimination, about relationships, health, sex, sexuality, racism, and so on is just common sense and makes the world a better place. I don't see how anyone could make a connection between teaching children the essentials of health, sex, and relationships to that of religion - they're quite separate matters. The only things that need keeping out of schools are ignorance and bigotry. And really, is the US flag so weak that it's diminished by sharing a pole with another symbol of liberty?

Quite right, public schools should be banned from promoting tolerance, understanding, and love. It's got to be ignorance, bigotry, and hatred all the way, hasn't it? (yes that's sarcasm)

While it is important for people to have proper protection from dust and inhalation hazards at work, it is also important to recognise the drawbacks to N95 masks. Recent research has shown that extended wear of these masks by healthy people results in permanent changes to the brain. Use of these masks by people with lung disease, the elderly, and in hot, humid conditions should be strongly avoided.

Fun fact: Redheads don't go grey the same way the rest of the population does. Rather than losing all pigment from one hair, then another, then ten more, until they are all grey, a redhead's pigment fades uniformly over time. There is no such thing as "salt and pepper" redheads.

Red hair changes color permanently with large shifts in hormones such as: puberty, birth control, pregnancy, and menopause. Approximate color can be restored with a natural henna dye treatment formulated to boost a red head's own color. Also, most redheaded actors and actresses have their color enhanced to appear more vibrant and consistent in varying light and on camera.

Boxes are a good idea. Alternative milk and long life milk products in the UK are boxes (not sure if recyclable, though, but are more money for less, which defeats the purpose), and fresh cow's milk is still in plastic containers. Luckily, our local milkman sells glass bottles. I've and had young peeps say that the older generation (e.g., 60+, as I am) caused plastic pollution ... back in the day, we had cardboard egg boxes (that have now been reintroduced, alone with paper straws), and glass bottles for pop and milk. If they did this with all bottles and brought back the paying for recycled/returned ones, we'd reduce plastic a fair bit, and wouldn't have to worry about broken glass on paths/roads, either. A win-win.

Fresh and long-life milk always comes in boxes in Germany. They can be stacked easily and then folded down really small for recycling.

There is an Edward de Bono book introducing the concept of "lateral thinking". They were looking for a white road surface and ended up with the idea of making roads of glass. In my country, all our road paint has embedded glass beads. With a little tumble polishing, smashed crumbs from toughened glass would be at least as good a surface as gravel.

I have a red-headed brother while everyone else in the family is a brunette. (Which I always thought was unfair - my hair is so boring!) But there are relatives on both sides of the family that have had someone with red hair. On another note, why do we call it red when it's really orange? :)

It's pretty much because old english didn't really have a name for the colour orange, other than classifying it as a shade of red (like the red kite bird, that is definitely orange). Once we learned about the fruit, the colour got a name

Overfed, alone and in an environment which is nothing close to its natural habitat. I can imagine only one reason for doing this: Zookeepers sometimes take animals home when they need rond-the-clock care and supervision. But if they really had no other option thanbtaking it with them into the shop, then it would be in a comfortable crate, secured and safe. Imagine stepping in poo in the supermarket...

I'm a bit perturbed as to why someone would just have a casket they plan to just trash. These things, especially solid wood ones like this (willow basket type are cheaper) are expensive, and generally, if you're going for an in-coffin viewing at a funeral etc, but plan to cremate, you may rent a coffin as opposed to buying one. (they are obviously deep cleaned between each funeral) so..

This is pure classism: "those lower classes should be kept uncomfortable to show them their place". Any notion that a standing cashier could be more effective than a sitting one should be disproved by the fact that the fastest cashiers are commonly found at ALDI - and, being a German chain, they have chairs.

I have never, ever seen cashiers not having an ergonomic chair to sit on, during all my travels in the past 50 years (... in Europe). It is part of the work safety regulations to give them the freedom to decide when they would like to sit or stand.

I can't even remember when I have last seen a check. In Europe they fell out of use about twenty years ago. But 0,01 transactions are a common way to verify payment or adress details. Unfortunately Scammers know that, too. So when you cash it, you have confirmed your post adress to soemone you can only hope it is The Gap, giving them your bank details in the process.

Don't leave your watches flat, they don't like it as the mechanism can fuse. If you don't wear them often pull the winder out and once a month push it in and let it run for 5 min or so. This way you won't go through batters fast.
