Even though people fall ill or get into accidents and other unfavorable situations all of the time, many think that it’s not going to happen to them; that they are somehow immune to the hardships and calamities in life, which might prove to have a higher chance of happening than one thinks.
Members of the ‘Ask Reddit’ community recently discussed things that people don’t realize have an extremely high chance of happening, after one of them started a discussion about it. The netizens’ answers covered all sorts of misfortunes—and a couple of more positive scenarios—so if you’re wondering what might be more likely to happen than you think, continue scrolling through to find out.
On the list below, you will also find Bored Panda’s interviews with Professor and the founding director of the Fire Safety Engineering Group (FSEG) of the University of Greenwich in London, UK, Dr. Ed Galea, and Assistant Professor at Michigan State University in the US, expert in hazard mitigation and science communication, Dr. Robert E. Drost, who were kind enough to answer a few of our questions about emergency situations.

We able-bodied tend to think of disabled people as unlucky but (as has been pointed out) being able-bodied is AT BEST temporary. Everyone will at some point have to face a life of disability unless you die early.
The ADA helps everyone and is one of America's great achievements.
I went from completely healthy with no symptoms to needing a cane to walk in the span of two years. Fortunately I’m insured and was able to get a hip replacement, which is basically a miracle operation.
I just had this exact experience. I'm less hip now, but definitely more metal.
Load More Replies...We are all, I guess, one unlucky slip/fall the wrong way from being disabled... Obviously there's a lot of others ways but let's keep it short!...... I'm just going to say that one of the things is? Please don't look upon us with pity or empathy, as in when we're going down the street. I personally do appreciate that you may empathise but my disability is not my whole personality. We're so much more than our crutches, calipers, wheelchairs etc 🙂
Thanks!! I finally admitted I need to use mobility aids and it's been great. I have to laugh when people look at me with pity...I may now be visibly disabled, but I am happier than ever.
Load More Replies...Last year I hurt my leg so bad that I had to use a walker for a couple of weeks. I now have even more respect for disabled people.
I went from completelly healthy to not being walk more than a few steps No one could tell me if it get better or not. I eventually recovered, but it took me almost 3 years.
34yo... Completely fine 3 months later I couldn't brush my own hair. It took years for them to find the issue... You never appreciate just being a functional human being until you're not.
I broke my foot in 4 places, no insurance. Lost my job, my apartment and my credit is about to implode. Everything changed in a moment. I have an apartment in a senior low income building, but I had to wait so long for medical care that I need bone fusion surgery. Poof! Life changes.
Sadly, Miscarriage in the first trimester. Some studies estimate as high as 40% of pregnancies terminate by 12 weeks.
Edit: Since this has gained mild traction I figure I should highlight a through-line featured in a lot of comments: normalize talking about miscarriage.
Obviously folks who have experienced a miscarriage should not be forced to discuss it if they aren't comfortable, but I have seen so many first-time pregnancies that miscarried where their first question was "what did I do wrong?" A significant majority of the time, there is nothing they did that triggered it; the more society is able and willing to provide that reassurance, the better off these people will be.
One ob-gyn explained that pregnancy is essentially the introduction of a foreign body (the father’s genome) into a woman. She said it’s a wonder that all pregnancies aren’t rejected.
It probably would if our immune systems were at 100%
Load More Replies...The anti abortion people will want to attack women who miscarry as they will suspect it was induced. Wouldn't be the first time. Just saying.
They already have. Women have already been arrested for having a miscarriage.
Load More Replies...My daughter was a bit late getting her bc shot so they ran a pregnancy test first. The results showed she wasn't pregnant but had an hgc level that showed she just miscarried. She had a hard time understanding how she could be grieving about something she didn't even know about. I told her she didn't need to understand it, just feel it and go through the process.
That is a wonderful response and, I imagine, helped her deal with it well. On the topic, just to concur the point, I’ve had 5 miscarriages, all between 6-12 weeks. No need for sympathy, I dealt with them well. (& those are the m’s I know about I guess).
Load More Replies...That's why it used to be the norm to not announce a pregnancy until the second trimester. And also why many of these red states anti abortion bans where every embryonic (not even a fetus) death is met with suspect and the mother can be arrested for murder are horrific, if for only one reason embryos have a high unalive rate normally how are you ever going to prosecute that case? You were pregnant then you were not and some republican prosecutor decided you need to be tried for murder? Are you serious? Gtfo
This is why we need to get out and vote. They are making it impossible for women. No contraceptives and no abortions / miscarrages / health issues etc. or else jail. Sick bastards! Our women are not chattel!
Load More Replies...My mother has had two. One in the first trimester and the other early in the second. Ever since she's had them shes noticed more people that she knows had come to comfort her by talking about their own losses which she had no idea about. There are so many more that you realise
My mom would also give you all a hug. They tried for five years and I was the one that stuck.
Load More Replies...This happened to my former spouse a handful of weeks into the pregnancy. No rhyme or reason, it just happened. And it sucked. I'd also like to point out that 1) the procedure they had done (D&C) would now be considered abortion and illegal in the state we live in and 2) while my ex was in tears on the phone with the hospital, they held us up for a copay before they'd schedule the procedure.
Anti abortion is callous disregard for women's health or their very life. Glad you managed to get treatment, not so glad about the "money or life" highway robbery
Load More Replies...Many women don't even realise they've previously miscarried - just a late, heavy period.
Yes, but now the states want to keep track of your periods. If all of a sudden periods return after 4 to 5 months or whatever... boom, jail. Hell, if I recall, one politician wanted to hold girls (who, naturally don't, at times have a regular cycle) if they miss one then get it back (a natural occurance) under the auspices of them being pregnant and terminating, when it was just an irregularity thing.
Load More Replies...I want to up vote this so many times. Also important to normalize fertility struggles and the many, many conditions that are unique to ovaries and uteruses.
I think I read somewhere that most miscarriages occur because of a genetic or chromosomal mutation that occurs either at the moment of conception or during the formation of the eggs and sperm beforehand. It's usually random bad luck and there is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent it. Miscarriages in the first trimester are most common because that's when embryonic genes activate and also when the most devastating of the random mutations make themselves known. I feel sorry for anyone whose been through a miscarriage, but know that it is in no way your fault and there wasn't anything you could have done to alter the outcome.
I was told to think of it like my body didn't know what to do, and it's like a warm up so next time it knows what to do.
Being diagnosed with a chronic illness.
This picture is not exactly the best representation of chronic illnesses, as I feel it implies it is because the lady in the photo is overweight. Lots of people with chronic illnesses don’t look ill, even though they might be having the absolute worst day.
Yeah, but statistically you are more likely to be overweight when suffering from a chronic illness : weight is often more a symptom than a cause. And it indicate stress, anxiety, isolation, loneliness etc... All of that induced by a society that want you to produce always more or die on the street and that doesn't care your disability makes it hard.

I have Type 2 diabetes and a few chronic illnesses. Things like chronic fatigue, arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuropathy (all of which I have), heart disease, etc. It's an illness or condition that is long lasting & usually can be treated but not cured. They are normally progressive and usually become worse over time
Load More Replies...It's not a chronic illness (at least I don't think!!!) but I was recently diagnosed with Lupus. My doctor described it as an autoimmune disease. But still I never thought I would be diagnosed with anything like that. So yes, it is a very high chance of anybody being diagnosed with anything.
Autoimmune diseases are chronic conditions. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis, both of which are autoimmune diseases. Most autoimmune diseases are considered chronic as they never go away

Then you find out that most if not all if these things fall under that one big umbrella diagnosis that for most of your life they told you was in your head. YAY! Science for proving them wrong! 😐
If you have a chronic illness, having other medical issues happen is pretty common. Asthma? Good chance you'll have COPD or another type of lung or weaker immune system issue in the future.
No matter how high or low the chance of an accident happening in your area, it’s best to always be prepared and know what’s the expected procedure in one situation or another.
“My motto is 'Chance Favors the Prepared Mind',” expert in crowd safety, Prof. Ed Galea told Bored Panda in a recent interview. “In most emergency situations, every second counts and so it is essential to be prepared.
“It is not uncommon in disaster situations for people to display what is known as 'Behavioral Inaction', a situation where they are so overwhelmed by the rapidly unfolding circumstances of the disaster that they don't know what to do, they can freeze and do nothing while they take in and try to comprehend the situation or they do things that are not appropriate to the situation. So having a plan of how you would respond to a disaster can make the difference between life and death.”
Complications during labor and delivery.
My wife wasn't high risk with either of our kids. We had no indication that we had anything to be concerned about.
With my first child, he got stuck in the birth canal and had to be emergency vacuum extracted. He likely would have been still born had we not had an OB at the ready to act fast.
My wife hemorrhaged unexpectedly during recovery after delivering our second child. She likely would have bled out had she not been monitored during recovery by labor and delivery nurses, and emergency treated by an OB when the hemorrhage happened.
I know many women want to have their children in different arrangements than a traditional hospital birth, and I respect that. Just understand that having a doula in a birthing center is not the same as a team of labor and delivery nurses along with an OB that has an OR with blood band ready if things go sideways. The likelihood of complications is much higher than many understand. Just because you aren't classified as high risk does not mean you are at zero risk of complications.
Yup! It's okay to have a birth plan, but it's just preferences. You likely won't get everything you wanted. My first was an emergency c-sec after I wouldn't dilate (and more problems). Tried to plan baby 2's c-sec, but she decided to come early.
I had my first at 40 and my second at 43. My nurse sister-in-law urged me to have an at-home birth but my ob-gyn suggested that due to my age it would be better to have them in a hospital. Lots of bleeding on my part with the first, and the second got stuck. They got a vacuum in there and swear to god the medical association especially labor and delivery need to come up with a good spray on anesthetic as getting that thing up my vagina hurt so much worse than the actual delivery.
I had many different things not go according to plan. I had a 52 hour labour with hours of pushing and tearing. It wasn't great, but when I was pregnant with my second child, they found out that she was bum cheeks first and I would have to give birth to her folded up. I'm just a very thin woman and my OB knew that wasn't going to be possible and I had a caesarean and I was relieved! I recovered much better tbf. I had a rapid birth with my third daughter and no complications.
I thought you couldn't have a normal vag birth after having a cesarean?
Load More Replies...In the Netherlands, it's still the default option to have a baby delivered at home by your midwife. If you want a hospital birth without an explicit medical need you have to pay extra for it (otherwise healthcare/birth is fully covered by universal healthcare). I'm really surprised that the mortality rate during child birth is not higher here.
My son would have died. No, this was not foreseen.
Load More Replies...In USA you really have a high risk of death of both mother and child during pregnancy and labour. You are the country in the western world with the highest numbers. In many countries In Europe you have highly educated midwife during the pregnancy and birth. Our homebirth is safer than hospitals (special in denmark).... course we select and visitate the women carefully and they are seen by both doctors and midwifes! So... your problem is not hospital or not. It is lack of controls, education and a healthsystem that would work for all!!
Ummm...a doula is trained to support the mother during labor and birth - he or she is not trained to monitor labor and assist during birth and would never assume that responsibility. I think OP means a midwife. HOWEVER, most emergency birth procedures require a set-up time that is typically longer than it takes to transfer to a hospital (~15 mins). You are not safer at a hospital.
Moments after my third child was born, a nurse leaped on top of me and started essentially jumping on my abdomen, looking concerned and determined, but not saying anything. I don't remember if it was some kind of clot or part of the afterbirth didn't come out or what, but I was later told it was life threatening and the nurse saved me. The wild thing in my mind was that once she was satisfied her work was done, there was no fanfare or acknowledgement. Everything just continued on as if nothing had happened. It was just another day looking into the face of death and casually winning life.
I had something similar happen. With 2 the doctor is just calmly "we got a little bleeding here". I remember thinking but that's normal. Turns out I was actually hemorrhaging, he just didn't want to freak me out right then.
Load More Replies...A doula is an assistant in addition to an ob or midwife a doula does not birth the baby and a birthng center is equipped for the situation this dad mentions and work in conjunction with a mainstream hospital that's on standby. They are very VIABLE and TRUSTWORTHY institutions. Also realize the medical model of birth lends itself to these very situations and outcomes.
With my only pregnancy that made it past the first few weeks, I went for my 28 week check up complaining that I was constantly peeing myself and I didn't know why.. turned out my son had put his tiny foot thru my sac, and put a tiny hole in it. So instead of going home after my appointment, I was immediately admitted and put on bedrest. Their only goal was to get me as far past 34 weeks as possible. I was getting ready for bed one night and they came in and told me they were giving me an emergency c-section in 2 hours, because my liver was failing, and both the baby and I were at risk of dying. I was at 34 weeks 1 day exactly. My son had to be in the NICU for 2 weeks after that, until he got up to 5 pounds. Luckily, he had no major complications from being born so early, just underweight and weak lungs. I'm thankful every single day that my doctors office was in a hospital, so I had immediate care, didn't have to drive anywhere, and could just focus on keeping my son where he belonged.
Having an important relationship come to a sudden end.
One day the person I considered my best friend told me I've been terrible to her for a year and that we always argue (but to my knowledge the only argument we ever had was a petty one we had the night before) and she also never brought up any problems she had with me /ever/, and then she cut me off. Completely shattered my trust in people. I told her /everything/. So if someone I trusted so much could do this to me, who could I trust?
You have a choice in how you deal with this, it does NOT have to scar you for life. It was and is a progression in your life and experience you grow from. You take what was good from it, you reflect on what wasn't, you use that knowledge in your next relationship. Life is about making connections, plural, when one ends, you make others, there are others out there doing the same thing. We are all out here doing the same thing. You be thankful for the happy times you had and move on to make more happy times with other people. There are so many people in all stages of life that need people from all stages in life to be a part of their lives. We all need community. We need people, we need pets, we need plant life. These will all come and go out of our lives, make meaningful connections realize they may not last, everyone has their own journey we can not and should not want to control them, then make more.
Was in a relationship for 7 yrs that came to an abrupt halt in 2020 (right as COVID officially became a pandemic and after a major surgery). She was my partner... Still not "over it" and that's fine (I guess) but it s*cks.
I’m wondering if I’m ever gonna try to save mine. She’s a friend worth having, but she screwed me over pretty bad 😞
Prof. Galea continued to point out that in a case of emergency, it’s crucial to know your surroundings. “Situational awareness is probably one of the most important factors in a rapidly changing environment. So knowing and understanding the layout of the space you are in is essential.”
For example, when you’re entering a crowded space, such as a shopping mall or a theater, the expert suggests checking out where the emergency exits are, and if possible identifying more than one exit. “Figure out how you would leave if you had to go in a hurry. Don't leave it until you are immersed in the disaster to figure out how to get out.”

Here in the ol US of A we have culture of people who modify their full sized trucks to run inefficiently and thus deliberately emit large plumes of exhaust smoke. They do this to stand up against what they perceive to be "rampant environmentalism", stick it to them thar brainwashed, woke, liberal cucks! If you are riding your bicycle or driving a EV you can get "rollin' coaled" by a big ol' American truck; the driver no doubt an intellectual, a pillar of society, perhaps a neurosurgeon on his way to the hospital after he makes his donation to the local charity that is in need.
The "rush" to go green is also desteoying the planet. "Sure! Lets clear this forest for a solar farm!" Or my favorite, "Lets cut trees down to make a single use straw that you need 2 or 3 to finnish that 18$ drink!"
Sadly you're right. The green push is so obviously another marketing scheme to sell more overly produced c**p to dumb people who wanna feel good by buying more trash put together in the same sweatshops as their Nikes. Total hypocrisy. Look at Californians push for electric cars and the amount of damage having those actually produces. The damage from them is way worse for our country because electric cars aren't there yet and the production of them is more harmful than standard cars.

not sure why you got downvoted for stating something I've heard many times from many different conservatives. at the root of the problem is the politicians, who get their pockets lined by oil and coal billionaires to promote this horrible lie. it doesn't take that much critical thinking, but unfortunately it seems like a good portion of people have forgotten how to do so when the lies make them feel good. ignorance truly must be bliss

How about you realize A) the west and absolutely USA have the lowest emissions and lead the way in clean energy so go after countries that are actually harming us all B) stop buying stuff made in or produced through said countries like China and India that contribute the worst to pollution. c) vote to punish businesses who leave your country to use these people and pollute. Everybody is quick to complain about pollution but still buys their fast fashion trash and needs their Nikes. Point the finger at everyone else when your money funds the problem. d)advocate for more green spaces and less over the top cities E) stop using black top. It's been proven to raise temperature substantially more than concrete which is already more than gravel or dirt roads. You want light colored concrete for your driveway/roads. If you have a blacktop you're directly contributing to the issue
f) acknowledge that global shift is a thing and the earth goes through it regularly shifting climates and zones. G) understand that earth is STILL THAWING FROM THE ICE AGE we legit were taught this in school and blows my mind nobody seems to remember it. Taught that the weather would be crazy until it levels back out since the whole world used to be a paradise. We're not meant to have such cold areas. Just because it's what we came to expect doesn't mean that's what should be there. There's actually also no real data on how much we effected the thawing as the less ice there is the quicker it melts. Everyone agrees the temperature is going wild, people hypothesize we have helped it a long a little bit sure but to what extent we can't say as this was always expected to happen. Heck when I was a kid the polar ice caps were taught to be expected to melt drastically in my life time and would most likely be gone in my lifetime or at least within 100-150yrs conservatively estimated.

This right here! I have known far too many people who have been faced with the decision of "do I pay my rent/mortgage/utilities or do I pay for the prescription medication(s) that will keep me this side of the dirt". Too many times, I've heard people say "oh, I was able to afford to buy my insulin, but because I couldn't also pay my rent, I now have no way to refrigerate it." People shouldn't have to choose between being healthy and being homeless!
Never thought we'd rack up so much medical debt. I just paid $1,256 in med bills the other day, and that's with good insurance. There's really no way to get a savings account built up.
“On an aircraft, identify where the nearest exits are—in front of you and behind you—and count how many seats you are away from the exit (if the aircraft fills with smoke, you may not be able to see the exit). And always try to get an aisle seat as close to an exit as possible,” Dr. Galea continued. “When seated, always keep your seat belt fastened and if you have to evacuate, leave your cabin luggage behind.”
While on a train, he advises sitting with your back towards the direction of travel, if possible; that way, if your train is involved in an accident resulting in a sudden stop, you won't be flung forward out of your seat.
Being killed in a car accident through no fault of your own. We are driving metal projectiles near each other at high speeds. S**t gets unpredictable, and you can’t control other people.

Yep, I didn't realize or ever think about dying at a relatively young age. Now I have stage 4 breast cancer. It has spread all over my body by the time I was diagnosed. Now I think about it every day. Live your best life people. Cherish those who you love and tell them everyday.
I think most of us realise that this has a high chance of happening. Also, what do they mean by "not the actual photo"? Is the person in the coffin not dead? That's a bit mean...

“If you live in an area that is prone to wildfires or floods or earthquakes, always have a 'go bag' prepared. “Another piece of advice, if you hear an evacuation alarm, react to it immediately, don't assume it’s a false alarm,” Prof. Galea added. “People don't appreciate how quickly an emergency can turn into a disaster, literally, 'every second counts', so start to evacuate as soon as you hear that alarm.
“In most survivable disasters, many people that don't make it either delayed the start of their evacuation or didn't know how to evacuate, so situational awareness is key (know your way out), as is a rapid response (when you hear the alarm, don't question it – get out).”
People often don't realize that everyday accidents, like car crashes or household injuries, have an extremely high chance of happening compared to more dramatic or rare events.
Extremely high compared to like a tornado hitting your house. There's a reason they're called everyday.

I'm just face-palming at this individual's choices of phrasing. Of course something that's "everyday" is going to happen more often than something "dramatic" or "rare"! It's literally the definitions of the farking words! However, just because something is more common than something else doesn't make it any less traumatic or painful for the one(s) experiencing it. Don't try to downplay someone else's pain and trauma just because "oh, this kind of thing happens all the time"!
Craziest freak household accident? I was putting my cutlery away while semi watching TV, my fault. I had one very sharp chef kitchen knife at the time and it fell out of the cupboard and was stuck out of my right hand! I phoned 999 and went to A&E. I was 15 at the time and was at home alone. My hand is fine, it missed all the main things that it needed to miss and you can't even see the scars now unless you look for them!
Becoming disabled. There’s so much ableism in the world because people think it could never happen to them.
In some spaces ableism is almost a cult. There is a very loud demographic in the video game community that does not want any accessibility features to ever make their way into video games.
That’s just weird. Accessibility features don’t take anything away from able-bodied users. Some humans are bafflingly selfish.
Load More Replies...THIS! At 17 I was diagnosed with systemic lupus and told most women with the disease die before 30 (this was in the early 1970's). I was lucky to find a great doctor and have spent the past 50 years being very active. But without much warning (probably more denial) lupus decided to take over. Today I have multiple health concerns that leave me in almost constant pain and exhausted. I am also very mobility challenged (can't walk well). Suddenly I went from very able to disabled. In the process I finally saw (for real) the struggles disabled people endure. I'm blessed with friends who treat me as always and work that has meaning. But all around me I see how those with worse disabilities are treated as somehow "lesser than" those who are abled-bodied. It as if people see someone in a wheelchair or walker as also lacking intelligence and ability to reason.
Some people are born disabled and never know what it’s like to be able bodied.
Got M.S and had a failure from my health care pros to help me due to Medicare and other patients paying them better through private insurance but that was nothing compared to losing my family and friends because I was suddenly disabled
Oh gosh... It's... Sometimes so freaking disheartening with some of the ableism that happens in the world. Going from being an excompetitive swimmer who was extremely fit, regularly hiked especially up steep hills... To now being occasionally reliant on others and having to figure out how to do things now with my crutches etc... Getting occasionally very angry at them and wanting to smash them and my calipers... And some ableist idiot gives me c**p for just going down the street or won't hold a door open for me?... I do honestly hope though that they never ever find out exactly what it's like to become suddenly disabled. I'd never wish that on anyone.
Overnight my migraines became chronic. Been on Disability since 2009 for them.
Yep. I have 3diff cond. Heart lung, kidney failed. I have ugly arms because of it. Get stared at all the time by 40 somethings. Poor woman. Guess again peeps. My life's most certainly better than yours!
You might find the situation different if your disabilities were not invisible. Not a week goes by that some idiot doesn't suddenly shove me from behind because apparently that's how you "help" wheelchair users. Worse are the people who stand in front of me and insist they are going to help me and refuse to take "no thanks" for an answer, forcing me to escalate up to "get the f out of my way". It's an aggravation I simply do not need on the way to. and from work!

Discussing crowd related disasters, which is something few people think about when attending a big gathering—the excitement of seeing a favored artist or a spectacular show tends to occupy too big of a part of one’s mind—the expert in crowd safety pointed out that while they are not common, they still happen all too often.
“When they occur, they can have serious consequences for those in the crowd. Crowd disasters can happen anywhere in the world, from the poorest to the richest, most sophisticated countries in the world. They usually happen because authorities or those in charge failed to manage the space appropriately; there has either been poor or no control on numbers of people entering the space or there has been poor management of the crowds once the people have entered the space.
“Two recent examples of these types of disasters, where the authorities failed to control numbers and failed to appropriately manage the crowd once in the space, include the Itaewon crowd crush disaster of 2022 in South Korea (where more than 150 people died in a crowd crush on the streets of Seoul) and the Duisburg Love Parade crowd crush disaster of 2010 (where 21 people lost their lives and more than 650 people were injured simply because of poor crowd management).”
One thing people often don't realize has an extremely high chance of happening is experiencing some form of mental health issue during their lifetime. According to various studies, a significant portion of the population will deal with conditions like depression, anxiety, or stress-related disorders at some point. Despite this, mental health is still stigmatized, and many people don’t seek the help they need. It’s important to recognize that mental health issues are common and to encourage open conversations and support for those who are struggling.
Even when you do seek help, you can't find a professional near you that will "actually" see you in person. COVID has been managed but getting an in-person appointment is non- existent in my area.
And if you can find one (telehealth or preferably in person) you still have to try and find one that won't just shove pills at you that aren't going to help (misdiagnosed) or will actually listen to all of what you're saying/needing without some sort of bias (autism in women and adults)

Phone calls can wait too. Use special tones for particular people from whom calls or texts are high priority.
Or, if it's an option, use Bluetooth to link your phone to your car so you can see who's calling. Most newer cars have this as an option.

People don’t realize that there’s an extremely high chance of getting hooked on a TV show just before it gets canceled. It’s like a cosmic law of entertainment: the more you love it, the quicker it’s destined to leave you hanging.
Yet many shows are allowed to jump the shark and should have been cancelled 3 seasons or more ago.
Every. Damn. Time. Few shows get to conclude their natural lifetime, like Breaking Bad did. I'm afraid to get invested and be left hanging but I just keep doing it--the more I like the more it's guaranteed that no one's watching and it gets abruptly axed on a cliffhanger.
Yep I've been hurt too many times, I just can't love another tv show again.

Without a big enough fan base and viewers to make money from, the best shows will still go bye bye
I heard that for Netflix at least, a new show needs to bring in new subscribers to be of any value to the company. Doesn’t matter if their entire existing customer base loves the show and watches it every day - if it doesn’t bring in enough new subscribers, it’s getting the axe. That’s why so many good Netflix series get cancelled after like 2 seasons :(

Another thing people are unsurprisingly not keen on thinking about, though they should, is a scenario where their home is hit by a natural disaster.
In an interview with Bored Panda, the expert in natural hazard mitigation, Dr. Robert E. Drost, seconded the idea that time and readiness are of utmost importance in case of an emergency situation. “Knowing what actions to take in a natural hazard event is a critical element to ensuring one’s safety. Often, decisions must be made quickly due to short lead times; the amount of time from when a warning is received until the hazard makes impact. There are many sources for information related to prudent preparation and evacuation practices available from local, state and federal agencies.”
Getting diabetes. At least here in the US people really don’t get how deep the deck is stacked against them.
Try Lyme disease... No one wants to diagnose you, believe your positive test results or prescribe you the friggin treatment without you becoming a rabbid Karen
Then get blamed for it and fat shamed endlessly. Fat phobia is the last acceptable form of discrimination.
Once you have Type 2 diabetes, it's nearly impossible to get rid of. Pay attention if you are diagnosed with pre-diabetes, which can be controlled with diet alone. And it does tend to be hereditary, so runs in families (like heart disease).
My doc said it's inherited through the maternal line, specifically (I was asking since my dad & all his sibs had/have it)

Yes, a very unhealthy lifestyle is normal in the US (high stress, fast food, healthy food is too expensive, always on the run).😓

Your parents dying. I’m in my mid-thirties and I’m seeing all these posts like “omg, I’m going to lose my mom/dad one day”
Yes. This was always a thing and you are supposed to outlive your parents. Make a plan now and talk about the hard stuff and then it’s not nearly as hard when it does happen. (My mother and I have been actively talking/planning for when she passes away since I was about 10- I lost my dad at 17).
Lost my mom 2019 due to cancer. Was the hardest thing I have gone through. I had been having a migraine and we talked on the phone about me visiting the day after and the day after came, I wasn't worried when mom didn't pick up, I figured she was at her neighbours for coffee and accidentally left her phone at home. A hour later I get a call from a unknown number, I usually don't answer but I did, I got the news that mom had died by a emt and that I needed to come sign papers. (Oldest child priviledge lol). One of my friends drove me and we then drove to where my sister stayed with a friend for the weekend. My sister and I just hugged and sat on the pavement outside her friends apartment. It made us closer but sometimes I still think, maybe I should shoot mom a message and see if I can come over...
This. I was thinking last night about this. Mom died 4 years ago, and of an immediate family of 11 (yes, 10 bros and sisters) only 3 remain. When you're younger you tend to see them like they will be there forever and that's (obviously) not the case. My paternal side have been gone a very long time, but the maternal side was much closer and it's awful. I'm definitely not young but it's like for each year I've aged, they have aged 3 and it's awful.
Yep. Lost my dad when I was 20. Lost my mom when I was 40. Kinda scared to see what happens when I turn 60.
I'm 58. My parents are 75 & 78 and in relatively good health. I lost my husband last November 2023. It was and is devastating. Don't think I'd have made it without them. Even now, I shudder to think of losing them one day. I've lost 2 of my 3 BFFs, 4 friends, both In-laws, my husband.... It never stops
My parents were 40 years older than me and 43 years older than my brother. I knew I would lose them way before some other people lose their parents. My dad died when I was 35 and my mom when I was 38, and I thank the Lord every day that I had them as long as I did.
Lost both of mine in 2023, 10 months apart. I'm glad the aged care home made us have an explicit conversation with them about their wishes/death plan when they moved in. Didn't make the loss easier, but at least we had a list to follow for all the ridiculous amount of questions and red tape that follows dying and death. Talk about it, know what your loved ones want, and more importantly, don't want...neither of ours wanted to be hooked up to machines in hospitals, thankfully they weren't. We try to hold on so tight, when the pain is less for all to just let them go in their time
My first experience with death (at least human death) was my cousin. He had "adult" leukemia (the kind that typically doesn't start developing until the individual is in their 30s) and passed away before his fifth birthday. I think I was 7 or 8 when he died. It was literally at that point that I learned that Death doesn't discriminate between old, young, rich, poor, male, female, or any other 🐂 💩 that people do.
Dropping your phone right after taking off the case.
That's because your fingers form a memory of the exact dimensions of the phone. After removing the case, the dimensions differ slightly, making you fumble.
That's because people remove the case while fiddling with the phone. Do it on a table top when you need to clean it and you won't break your phone.
Load More Replies...Modern phones are as slippery as fish. I marvel at the people who do not even have cases.
Why would you do that? I have had my phone for about three years and have never taken off the case.
My biggest issue is the simple fact that every single phone case I've ever had makes my phone overheat. For this reason, I only put the case on it if I know I'm not going to be at home for a multiple day stretch. This is for multiple reasons, but the primary one is that my case helps me identify my phone from anyone else's at a glance. If I know that I'm only going to be away from home for a few hours, the case stays home unless my outfit doesn't have pockets.
My fumble finger self always stands by the table to do that, and same for opening bottles, drying glasses, etc.
I'd had a galaxy s9 for like 5 years before i upgraded to an s24 plus and was waiting for the case from Amazon... the day it was supposed to arrive I pulled up the broken screen vid from youtube and was like "oh f**k no!!!!" and showed my gf, but i immediately had to backtrack the joke. I swear she took it worse than I woulda if I had actually broken the screen. Lol.
According to Dr. Drost, the most important action to take in case there is a natural disaster is being prepared ahead of time, which entails developing an evacuation plan, identifying a safe shelter, and having a well-furnished kit that provides for hazard updates (a NOAA battery powered radio, water, cash, for example).
When working on being prepared for an emergency, you might want to take into consideration the type of the natural hazard that might occur, which is often linked to specific geographic locations based on weather and geologic conditions. “For instance, earthquakes are more common in the western part of the U.S. and tornadoes in the Midwest. Hurricanes are typical during certain seasons and most often along coastal areas. Though, this can—and has—changed as we experience changing climate patterns,” the expert noted.
The US power grid failing. It would have extreme consequences. Just about everything we need and do in American society requires some sort of power. Even the water you drink.
Perfectly aligned coronal mass ejection (CME) that pumps billions of watts of power into our atmosphere disabling electronics and wiping out power grids.
Texans have already faced this. And guys let me tell you it was bad, really bad. No food or water. Some without heat for a week. Then water pipes bursting after everything started thawing (happened to my brother). I still don't trust the grid. There's no way it's completely fixed. I have emergency supplies now along with candles and flashlights. Because of our hot summers they have even said the drain on the grid from running ac could bring the grid down again.
Oh my god! Every time there's a winter storm warning I have ptsd because of that storm!!! My intuition made me go buy a small heater that would work on a propane tank a month before thankfully, if it wasn't for that we would have literally died. No electric for a week, no running water for almost 2 weeks thanks to our well pump basically blowing up . It was a NIGHTMARE!!!! I desperately want out of here. I'm still so terrified my 9 kitties and 2 dogs are going to freeze to death and I'm their mom so it'd be my fault 😭

Discussing natural hazards with Bored Panda, Dr. Drost added that it’s important that individuals pay attention to watches and warnings that are published to the public. “These can come from a variety of sources such as the National Weather Service, NOAA and the USGS; often this information is delivered by local meteorologists, social media and even cell phones. It’s a smart practice to be aware of what’s happening and have a plan to stay safe in a natural hazard event,” he said.

We've spent the last century building the perfect environment for CURING a pandemic. We are cleaner, more educated about infection, more technologically advanced, more capable of creating a cure. If covid had happened a century earlier, tens of millions more would have died. Don't disparage the advances we have made.
In no other time would they have been able to develop the vaccine and distribute it worldwide. Without the technology that we have it would have been everybody sick enough to be admitted to the hospital would have died. Sorry for anyone who lost a loved one.

I listened to part of the team (three women) that were building the vaccine for a pandemic, before COVID. They are constantly making and building up vaccines for the next pandemic. There's a list of ingredients of the vaccines and a huge amount of those can be found in apples. It's ingredients we don't hear about that are common in certain foods, also there's other ingredients. Antivaxers don't realise what they are eating in everyday foods. Some are harmful too. Those against any vaccinations are fools believing the hysteria because a vaccine was made too quickly (no it wasn't) or full of chemicals. Look up what chemicals are in your fruit and what is around you in everyday life. Look at Meatloaf (antivaxer) where is he now. It's ok if you don't want to vaccinate yourself, but don't put others at risk! Especially your children. A woman's baby just had whooping cough because of this and the fool won't let her be vaccinated for anything else! You're putting others at risk. Selfish af
The next pandemic will come quicker than 100 years, possibly in our lifetime
Dying at any moment. There are countless reasons why you might die in 30 seconds.
Heart attack. Aneurysm. A very unfortunate fall on something sharp or piercing.
A car could crash through your house. Or a plane. The next door neighbor's propane tank might explode, sending shrapnel through your window and into you. Or you might be the unfortunate landing spot for a stray bullet.
If you're at work, someone might try to rob your business and shoot you or stab you. Or a hostile coworker might go postal. Or an irate customer.
But our brains conveniently shut all this out. We're not guaranteed the next minute, let alone tomorrow.
Hey, a piece of Skylab could fall out of the blue and you're a greasy spot in the sidewalk.
Food shortages. Climate change is destroying croplands and will do so more in the near future.
War causes food shortages too. Ukraine is or use to be a major exporter of wheat.
Start gardening!! It's fun and you basically get free food! And it's proven that it helps your mental health. Some of you NEED to start gardening.
Anything bad if you don't prepare for it.
People don't prepare for bad scenario (flood, crime, earthquake, even war, etc) simply because they're to afraid about it. Thinking "preparing is just jinxing" "Bad thing happen when you think about it".
Preparation might not 100% prevent bad thing to happen. But it'd prevent bad thing from turning into terrible thing.
Preparing by probability is also a thing. Not prepared for zombie apocalypse or earthquake because they're very very unlikely, but prepared for power outage, wind damage and fire and even some other emergency situations. It's not about fear, it's about the time, energy and money you use to be ready for something unlikely, that you could spend on normal life.
Prepare according to how likely a bad thing is. Living in, say, San Francisco, preparing for an earthquake – yes, you should. Preparing for an earthquake in Sweden? A waste of time.
I think in general people struggle with the reality that a low probability event can have a high probability of occuring if you roll the dice often enough. Or more accurately we have a hard time keeping track of how often we are practically rolling the dice and taking that into account when we access risk. .
Tim Minchin said it best: "The doctors told me there was a one in 64 million chance that this could happen. It's A MIRACLE!" But, of course, we know it's not, because things that have a one in 64 million chance happen ... ALL the TIME! To presume that your one in 64 million chance thing is a miracle, is to significantly underestimate the total number of things that THERE ARE"
Were just rolling dice everyday then?? You ppl all need therapy. Srupid feed
….yes, we are all “rolling dice” every day, meaning taking chances. Every time I get in my car and drive I’m “rolling the dice” and hoping I don’t get in an accident and die. That’s what the metaphor means.

This is why we need to get our tails to the polls and vote! If Project 2025 comes into power, this country is f----d.

Donald Trump and this current Supreme Court have really exposed some serious holes in preventing bad actors from being ousted or held accountable. I only hope we can get those weaknesses fixed before they tear the country apart.
I assume that the chances of walking over a dead body you have no idea is buried right under your feet is probably pretty high. Not saying it's a murder, could just be a skeleton from days of yore in a long-forgotten burial ground/cemetery. But I always think that I've probably been within 6 feet of more human remains than I'll ever realize.
In London there is a little garden spot with trees and flowers and benches where you can sit and eat your lunch and just take 10 minutes to breath. It was once a plague pit.
You can be in love with someone for years and one day end up not knowing them at all.
You can believe someone is in love with you for years and one day end up finding out that they don't know you at all.
that's what happened to my last relationship. I one day just realized that he made an idealized version of me in his mind and never listened to the things I actually said even when I said them as bluntly and clearly as I could.

It's a matter of when, not if.
Imagine the super volcano at Yellowstone. That's a when and not if. That would change the world as we know it, for a very long time
Losing your 10mm socket.

Most people don't realize that diarrhea is hereditary..... it runs in your jeans! Haha j/k
40% of people will get cancer.
100% is accurate without the shadow of a doubt. Our bodies usually just take care of it. If our immune system misses the cancerous growth though, then we probably are at the 40%

Sure, but you could live the healthiest lifestyle anyone has ever lived and still get cancer.

Or other snow related injuries. My dad slipped and fell while shoveling snow and detached a retina.
I live in a part of South Africa where it snows only every few years (like every 8-20 years). And it melts immediately. Never had to shovel snow in my life. Bwa ha ha.
It barely snows in my part of Canada too :) everyone assumes I live in an igloo but I’m on the west coast where it just rains all winter and barely gets below 2 degrees C

Isn't that actually extremely unlikely? I mean it will eventually happen and it will be catastrophic, but I think we would actually see the build up for it a century beforehand.
