We’re all human, and we all make mistakes. It’s what we tell ourselves when things go wrong, and for the most part, it’s true. But here’s the thing: not every slip-up is created equal. Breaking a plate during dinner is unfortunate. Backing your car through the garage door? That’s going to sting a lot more. Both are accidents, sure, but the consequences couldn’t be more different.

Below, we’ve gathered a collection of painfully expensive mistakes people have shared online, the kind that make you wince and instinctively check your bank account just looking at them. Scroll down to see the photos, and maybe send some sympathy to the folks behind them. They could definitely use some.

Meet Bonnie, Our 3-Month-Old Collie. During The Night She Discovered A Can Of Blue Paint With A Loose Lid

Dog with paws stained green on a carpet with visible expensive fail stains and spilled paint or ink nearby.

We call this her 'blue period' since she is obviously going through some artistic phase. The Chinese rug cost nearly $6,000.

I would DIY the rug with the same blue paint as a stain and wash it out with the pressure washer outside or have the professionals rinse the excess paint out leaving the blue stain behind. Would be much more pretty.

Can you imagine how many tiny pots of paint would be needed to dye that whole rug?? It's really not worth shelling out hundreds of dollars, not to mention all the time and effort, to - if you're lucky and it works - end up with an ugly blue rug instead of an ugly beige rug.

This happened at my husbands previous job the day after he quit over safety concerns. Guys were showing up high and drunk, management didn't care, and sure enough one of them knocked the sprinkler pipe putting something on a shelf on a rack and the whole thing let go. Expensive mistake considering they were warned repeatedly by staff that there were issues.

Sometimes the simplest errors turn into the most expensive lessons. When it comes to famous blunders, few can match the scale of what happened to France’s national railway company in 2014. SNCF ordered 2,000 new trains worth billions, only to discover they were too wide for over 1,000 of the country’s train platforms.

The company had measured newer stations but neglected platforms built more than 50 years ago. The error forced them to spend an additional 50 million euros widening 1,300 platforms over two years, turning what should have been a triumph of modernization into an expensive reminder to double-check your measurements.

About five years ago my family spent the weekend in a house on the beach. We didn't know there was a big festival going on, with much alcohol involved. On Saturday evening the tide was out, and people were driving, and parking, on the sand. When we woke up on Sunday morning we could see a half dozen or so vehicles that had been left parked there, but now were in water up past the axles, and that was just what we could see from the house we were staying in. Who knows how many there were on the whole beach.

In London, a skyscraper became famous for melting cars. The building at 20 Fenchurch Street, nicknamed the Walkie Talkie, created an unexpected problem during its construction in 2013.

Its concave glass facade acted like a giant magnifying glass, focusing sunlight onto the street below with such intensity that it warped car panels and melted plastic parts. One Jaguar owner found his side mirror and bodywork damaged after parking nearby for just an hour.

The phenomenon earned the building a new nickname: the Walkie Scorchie. Developers eventually installed a permanent sunshade at a cost of around £10 million to fix the problem.

I've done it, except it was the windshield that popped. I'd been using an 8' length of ABS pipe to bring bundles of rebar home and the bare pipe fit in the car for the drive into town. Then one day I had the bright idea of adding an ABS collar to each end to make them stronger, which used up 1/2" of the 1/4" safety margin I'd been working with. "SLAM-CRACK-'CK-ME!"

NASA experienced one of the most frustrating mistakes in space exploration history in 1999. The Mars Climate Orbiter, which cost $125 million to build, was lost because of a simple measurement mix-up.

Engineers at Lockheed Martin used imperial units while NASA’s team used metric units. Nobody caught the discrepancy until it was too late. The spacecraft missed its intended orbit and burned up in the Martian atmosphere. The entire mission vanished because it got lost in translation of mathematical language.

Why do you need to disinfect the money? It's filthy, but you are not going to eat it. Wash your hands after handling it and that's it.

My sister-in-law's neighbor evacuated due to an oncoming hurricane a year or so ago, leaving their Tesla behind. Apparently the salt water reached the battery. Salt water is an excellent conductor of electricity. The only part of the house that didn't burn is the part that was under water.

The business world has seen its share of spectacular misjudgments. In the early 1990s, Quaker Oats bought Snapple for $1.7 billion, convinced it would dominate the beverage market. The acquisition turned into a disaster, and just three years later, Quaker Oats sold Snapple for only $300 million.

The loss was staggering, made even more painful by the fact that Snapple continued to thrive as an independent brand after the sale. Sometimes the best business decision is recognizing when a partnership simply isn’t working.

I visited a home in Queen Creek AZ that had a trench that was easily 10 feet wide and over 100 feet long. The depth was 6- 8 feet. It was caused by the ground settling due too excessive ground water pumping. That home had a gang plank you needed to cross to get to the front door.

Spain faced an engineering nightmare that sounds almost impossible to believe. Designers working on the Isaac Peral class submarine made a decimal point error in their calculations, making the vessel 100 tons heavier than planned.

The mistake meant the submarine would sink to the ocean floor and never resurface. Engineers caught the error before construction began and redesigned the submarine to be longer, but then discovered it was too large to fit into the port where it was being built. The cascading errors turned what should have been a routine military project into a costly lesson in precision.

$65,000 Medication... Most Expensive Thing I Have Ever Had To Throw Away

Hand in green glove holding a medical fluid bag above a large white container, illustrating expensive fails in healthcare equipment.

The patient didn’t show up for their appointment. Once mixed, it expires in less than 24 hours. No one else was scheduled for it, unfortunately.

We currently don’t have mixing capability at our location. We have to mix it at a different location and have it delivered on the day of the appointment. 1st time this had happened with such an expensive medication.

Actually, 65K is probably the actual cost but government funded health care would cover the cost. The NHS often makes a decision not to provide certain drügs due to cost but as patients we never have to pay... beyond NI tax, which funds the NHS.

Cultural attachment can be stronger than taste test data, as Coca-Cola learned in 1985. After conducting nearly 200,000 blind taste tests showing consumers preferred a sweeter formula, the company replaced its 99-year-old recipe with New Coke.

The backlash was immediate and intense. Protest groups formed across America, consumers stockpiled the original formula, and the company received up to 8,000 complaint calls per day. One person even wrote to the CEO addressing him as “Chief Dodo.”

Just 79 days later, Coca-Cola brought back the original formula as Coca-Cola Classic, having discovered that some things matter more to people than taste.

Short answer: idiocy (or at least absent mindedness) at work. Long answer: I'm guessing the truck - apparently a two tier car transporter, so the trailer and its load of vans was even taller than the driver's cabin - was too tall to fit under the gas station roof. The truck got stuck and the edge or the roof wedged with the rear end of the first van on the trailer.

Sydney Harbour Bridge used to be the only way to get from the north to the south of Sydney (and vice versa). Way back in the olden days it had toll booths that had height limitations (you can see where this is going). Every now and then a big truck would think that they could make it, rather than going the long way around over the bridge about 10km-ish to the west without height restrictions. They would get jammed in the toll gates and create hours and hours of chaos. Ahh, those were the days.

Couple of years ago I was leaving to go somewhere. I believe it was early in the morning. I drove by this one gas station I had to pass. For some reason as I drove by something caught my eye. I couldn't see exactly what happened. When I came home later in the day as I drove by I could see the overhang for the pumps had collapsed. We had a either a storm with strong winds or a wind storm the previous night. It fell toward the the building. It just so happened that the building was far enough away the overhang that it missed the building. A few days later after they removed the overhang I drove down to the gas station to look what happened. The support poles for the overhang had rusted at the base and became weak so during the storm, it blew the overhang over

Trading errors can happen in the blink of an eye with devastating results. In 2005, a stockbroker at Mizuho Securities in Japan made a typing mistake that cost the company around $225 million. Instead of selling one share at 610,000 yen, he accidentally offered 610,000 shares at 1 yen each.

Investors immediately jumped on the incredible deal, buying up the drastically underpriced stock before anyone could stop the trade. Even with stock exchange rules limiting some of the damage, the typo became one of the most expensive keystrokes in financial history.

Got Gucci Sunglasses For My Wife. Dog Ate Them Before She Had A Chance To Wear Them

The entertainment industry isn’t immune to costly mistakes either. When reshoots were needed for the 2017 film Justice League, Warner Bros faced an unusual problem. Actor Henry Cavill had grown a mustache for another role and couldn’t shave it off.

The studio ended up spending around $25 million to digitally remove the mustache from every scene featuring Superman. The extensive visual effects work became a notorious example of how small scheduling conflicts can balloon into massive budget overruns when production timelines collide.

My husband and I almost did this our 2nd time taking the boat out. I was able to walk into the water and put the plug in as we had just gotten off the boat ramp and were still in shallow water. Luckily I had brought a couple of towels so I was able to sit and air dry since it was summer.

Lived on a houseboat for 10 years. Saw this at least a dozen times, usually after a storm. Usually a bilge pump that was not properly maintained, or occasionally just too much water washing over that stern.

These stories remind us that mistakes happen at every level, from individual people to massive corporations. The scale might be different from dropping your phone or denting your bumper, but the fundamental lesson stays the same. We’re all capable of errors, and sometimes the most expensive ones come from the simplest oversights.

The best we can do is learn from these cautionary tales, double-check our work, and hope that when we inevitably mess up, the consequences are a bit more forgiving.

Paint Store Guy Didn't Close The Can Properly

Spilled paint can inside car causing a messy expensive fail on the vehicle floor and seats.

Bought a car one week ago, more expensive than I could really afford but so beautiful. Picked up paint while on vacation to paint my mom's house. Teenager working at paint store apparently didn't close the can properly. That's 1 gallon of slightly greenish gray wall paint on the floor of my new car. Paint store guy's response was to apologize profusely, give me another gallon of paint, and throw in a free tub of miracle wipes. Lovely.

I mean, it's your responsibility to secure anything you load in your vehicle. Why isnt it in the boot? Why didn't they check the lid? Why didnt they wrap a bag round it? Why in the hell is it some poor kid earning minimum wage fault? And how in the hell did they think one single tin is enough to paint a house? That's not even enough for 1 wall!

I'm guessing the guy probably had something catastrophic happen with paint in the past. But on this one, if the lid is plastic, they can randomly pop off. Not often, but they can. Most of the time it's in the shaker (spinning style), but once in a while...

This is why you buy a high-quality cast iron skillet that will tolerate temperature changes. Iron is brittle, and cheaply made thin skillets are even more brittle. I own a Lodge that I've had for many years, and they're not that expensive.

We Always Knew It Would End Like This Some Day

Office chair on a melted plastic floor protector showing an unfortunate and expensive fail in home setup.

My wife and daughter have been telling me for years that the tempered glass floor protector in my office was a ticking time explosive. Today, when I accidentally knocked my favorite hand-etched glass tumbler off the desk, the floor protector saved it by shattering first into thousands of tiny shards. Well done by the floor protector.

Had a boss once in an office with floor to ceiling glass windows. Supposed to be tempered glass. He leaned back in his chair and hit the glass an almighty blow - no problem. In fact did it several more times over a couple of years. Then one day he was showing a friend and leaned against the glass and it shattered. The only thing that saved him was the venetian blind. I guess tempered glass works OK, but has some kind of limited life or number of impacts.

I had a large cutting board made of tempered glass. While washing at the sink, the hot water must have unevenly heated one side. The thermal pressure caused it to bow ever so slightly, and then explosively shatter. The pieces became missiles in the direction of the bow. I was holding it sideways at the time, so it created a cone of shards over the kitchen. Had washed it the same way many times before.

I have a friend who took a job at a place that distributed large plate glass windows for stores. This was before tempered glass was required by law for any and all public facing windows. On his first day at the job the floor supervisor told him, "If you're ever handling a large plate and you lose control of it, LET IT GO and move away from it as fast as you can. Do not try to save it. You're replacing an employee who tried to save the glass, and was cut in half, bone and all. We can replace the glass, but we can't give you your life back." My friend left that job at the end of the day because he couldn't get the visual image out of his mind.

This is in Panama City Beach, FL and the 3 story house got knocked off it's foundation during an EF-3 tornado in January 2024. The house stayed wedged like this, in between it's neighbors for over a year due to legal disbutes between owners and neighbors. Same house was damaged during Hurricane Michael in 2018 and rebuilt. A judge ordered the house be demolished or face $1k fines/daily, demo was completed in Oct 2025, it no longer exists.

This is in Myrtle Beach, SC since the last big hurricane that hit that area.. It's been mired in lawsuits between the owner of the leaning house and their insurance, and the owner of the blue house against the owner of the leaning house because of damage it received. Nothing has been resolved and they still sit there like this now.

"You keep doing this and we'll screww the next tooth into your skull." ~ my dentist telling me that the tooth couldn't be repaired any longer and it was time for a full dental implant. If you get a choice, a funny dentist is better than a seriously quiet one.

I am not sure if it's a full implant but after mine came off ( two times ) they put a post in anf then the cap. They left what was left of original tooth.

I Baked My AirPods Along With My Choc Chip Cookies

Oven mitt melted on hand while baking cookies, showing expensive cooking fail and unfortunate kitchen mistake.

I turned the oven on to preheat it. 3 min later I removed the oven tray to put it into the kitchen island so I could line it with cookie dough. It didn’t feel very hot, yet the AirPods that were on the kitchen island were presumably attached to it. When I opened the oven after baking for 10 min, there was an abnormal cookie.

I was walking towards the wood stove with a chunk of wood in one hand, a tape measure in the other. I dropped the wood in, took a few steps, and realized I was still holding the wood. I thought the tape measure had completely vaporized but found the coil itself tightly wound in the ashes at the end of the season. Many of the numbers were still legible.

It looks like the bottom of the tree rotted out causing it to fall over, it didn't even rip the roots out of the ground. I think the cuts are from the fire department/public works cutting it to clear the roadway. There was a pile of cut pieces out of view of the picture.

We had something similar. Tree in neighbor's yard was rotten in the middle, but no visible signs on outside. Storm took it down onto our house, cracking open the roof above the master bath. Our insurance company bought us a new master bath, and we got to make modifications we'd always wanted :-)

New it probably cost 800k or more. Plenty of people that buy a boat like that will put 150k worth of outboard motors on the back. Some of the people that buy a boat like that will put 500k worth of outboard motors on the back The two on this boat could be between 60 and 160k. Of course even if it's newish, replacement cost is considerably less.

In winter, the ditches look like dystopian graveyard snowscapes, a car/truck/semi upside down or boxed completely in with snow. My cat knocked my refurb Samsung A16 (which is old but works perfectly well) on the floor and c*****d the screen a few months ago. I just got a great new job, so I replaced it with a newer (not new) refurb for $200. It works perfectly well. I honestly don't need the latest and greatest, and, given that my cats seem to like to (try to) break my phones, I'll stick with the cheap ones. And I'm never buying any Apple product.

Just be glad the rock hit the glass and not them! My husband was mowing out at the church, ran over a piece of wire and it shot the wire out the back, through his leather boot and logged into the front of his calf right up against the bone! Mower hit a rock. Happened to me years ago when my husband was mowing 1 day, luckily me or the kids didn't walk by the door that day. He didn't even know it happened until I went on the porch waving my arms at him. He disengaged the blades to find out what was going on & asked if we were OK. He told me to go to Lowe's and pick out a new storm door. It never happened again but after that the inside door is always closed when we mow.

That's what happens if you put Vanish on all the stains and THEN ignore the instructions by washing at a high temperature. The oxygen bleaching agent decomposes and in the process gives off gaseous oxygen, and that's what creates the huge amount of foam. Stick to 40°C / 104°F and you'll be fine.

    Forrest Hobbs

wayne whitson: Vanish in the UK is a stain-removing laundry additive containing an oxygen bleaching compound (and other ingredients). The issue is that the bleaching compound decomposes at some temperature over 40 Celsius, giving off gaseous oxygen, so you get this sort of thing if you use it with a 60 Celsius wash.

I would run the wash cycle without detergent in order to clean the stains and rinse the excess soap out from the stain treatment, then add detergent for a second cycle for the actual cleaning of the rest of the garments.

Someone was paying in cash where I work and one of the twenties felt wrong, I took a closer look and it said ‘Prop Money’ on it! I gave it back to the customer (I know I’m supposed to pass it on to the police, but I don’t think they care that much) and advised him to go back to whoever gave him the cash (a wage packet) and ask for a proper twenty pound note. I have never seen prop money before, but it does explain how they can afford to have huge suitcases full of dosh. At first glance it was convincing and it was the feel that made me look closer.

Why? You can buy a regular tv that size for less than $500.

It looks like they put a regular TV plastic or metal frame.

    Cutting Board Exploded

Broken glass scattered in a kitchen sink alongside a fork, illustrating an unfortunate and expensive fail.

Turned around after washing my hands and heard a huge crashing noise. It was my cutting board obliterating itself. I assume I cut the food too close to the burner and it got hot, then when I washed my hands with cold water it cooled down too fast. Either that or there’s a ghost that hates cutting boards.

A glass cutting board is the fastest way to dull knives. I wonder why they even exist.

The noise it makes is horrid. Only reason I can think of is that cut can go on the dishwasher?

If that's in the USA, that probably cost OP about $8572.37 (obviously joking!). In Canada that costs about 5 minutes of embarrassment when the medical staff come in and see it for the first time.

The burglar alarm went off at 3am in my rental house. I couldn't stop it anynway at all, even with the key. Took a hammer to it. It stopped. They tried to charge me for it, but I asked what they suggested I should have done? There was no other solution, and I felt that my neighbours would agree. We never even turned the silly thing on!
