From a crunching sound when we drop our phones on accident, to the screeching of tires and a crash, there are sounds that induce a physiological feeling of dread. But when it dissipates, and if it's not our items that are damaged, our curiosity often gets the better of us and we want to see just what sort of destruction happened.

The “That Looked Expensive” online group gathers examples from all over the world where failures, misfortune, and accidents befell costly-looking items. So regardless of whether you are cringing or experiencing a deep degree of schadenfreude, be sure to upvote your favorites and comment your own stories below.

There's another pub being rebuilt, stone by stone, beam by beam in the UK. Developers bought it, ignored the historic grade listing and demolished it thinking nobody would notice. An 800 year old pub. That was the local pub for 800 years. On the main road through the village. For 800 years.

And my friend's family had to get a permit to chop down a tree on their protected property that's not even that old. The house and grounds are about 100yr and the tree they could prove was only 50 so the bugger getting into their foundation was not protected by the keep same law

And the fückers tried to squirm their way out of the rebuild and delayed it even longer by trying to include flats within the pub. They tore it down knowing they couldn’t in hopes to build flats and a bar. They’re extra slimy. There’s a full Wikipedia on it.

Back in my hometown, apprently the council don't give a f*ck about history - despite protests against it and someone offering to buy and restore the property to original specs and use, they have approved plans to build a two storey modern extension onto a mid 18th century pub, hollow it out, and convert it into modern minimalist flats; retaining none of the original features or layout. Can we get those guys who grrd at this down to my hometown to grr at them?

No, here in America, they would get together with other developers, form a SuperPac, throw a metric f**k-ton of money at the Republican Party, and then buy themselves entire Circuits of friendly courts, then ignore precedent, case law, decency, honor, and manufacture a ruling out of whole cloth using an archaic law from the 19th century. Or just bulls**t their way into it, like the recent ruling striking down Roe v Wade.

These containers do not stay intact. The beaches of the northern islands in the Dutch Waddensea, water and seafloor included, were completely covered with cheap stuff made in east asia, from Ikea-stools to the plastic pipes of soap-pumps. And it still keeps coming. Google container ship Zoe, who lost 300 containers. https://www.waddensea-worldheritage.org/news/tuesday-storm-halts-clean-efforts-lost-containers

Is this ship aground? Seems weird to see it fully loaded yet sitting so high in the water you can see the rudder. I was kind of shocked the day I learned how common it is for them to lose cargo containers. "According to a World Shipping Council (WSC) report, up to 1,382 sea containers are lost at sea each year. "

Might be a shipment of empty boxes. The amount of lost containers is quite small compared to the total amount shipped... But the impact is big... The friendly floaters and the Lego beaches in the UK are a seemingly 'fun' result ...

No, I accidentally activated the security alarm at our state office that was connected to our local police department. Turned out to be a good thing as the wrong phone was connected to the PD (the number they called went to the phone OUTSIDE the security door where the perp could have answered to "clear" the need for PD to come. Then our office manager, who answered the phone, gave the wrong answer to the security password & our security personnel who DID know the password was out for the day!! Didn't get fired 'cuz I inadvertently showed problems in our office security in a STATE agency!! (Yes, cops were swarming outside as a precaution.)

Seeing someone else's misfortune can be a mixed bag. Yes, we are sympathetic creatures as humans, blessed (or cursed) with the ability to empathize with others. But deep down, sometimes another struggle is just funny. After all, America's Funniest Home Videos wouldn’t be running since 1989 if we didn’t enjoy seeing another’s accidents. The Germans, as always, have a word for this, schadenfreude, or the feeling of joy (freude) at seeing someone fail/be harmed (schaden).

Unfortunately, scientists are here to ruin the fun. People with low self-esteem are more likely to experience schadenfreude, as they feel it brings others down to their level. Similarly, people with high degrees of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy are more likely to feel it as well, as they tend to “struggle” with feeling empathy towards others. This is not to say that looking at these fails makes you a bad person, rather, that the impulse might just not be that benign at heart.

Her death was the direct result of the airline failing to adhere to strict maintenance procedures and technical service bulletins from Boeing regarding inspections for corrosion and fatigue. The airframe was also beyond its flight-cycle design life, and should have been subject to even more rigorous inspection than usual.

I read a quote somewhere - maybe even here - that airline pilots are vastly overpaid for the vast majority of the time, and on occasions like this, vastly underpaid. I'm always amazed at what pilots can do under the most dire of circumstances, and how they can improvise to manoeuvre a plane in ways that are very non-standard.

One doesn’t have to look far to find other, ample examples of content based on “fails.” As far back as 2008, internet pages were building and finding content revolving around misfortune, accidents, slips of the tongue, and other mistakes. While sometimes the content does seem cruel, examples like “That Looked Expensive” have mass appeal because the victims tend to be wealthy. A crashed sports car sucks, but if one can afford it, it might not feel as bad.

This is why I'm terrified of MRI machines, I heard this story of someone being inside one and it pulled some metal cannister or something in and decapitated them. I've since had MRI's done, but they're still unsettling to me. The sound of the coldhead sounding like a heartbeat doesn't help. xD

I mean they both look intact so other than potential minor injuries from using escape slides (happens almost every time they're deployed that at least one person will hurt themselves) there's no reason they shouldn't be.

There is also a degree of curiosity in seeing expensive things break. Most of us are not around supercars, yachts, and construction equipment, so seeing what it looks like broken down or on fire has a sort of novel appeal. This is an impulse older than internet memes. For example, US soldiers in World War Two sometimes expressed a fascination with destruction. They would enjoy exploring the burnt-our wrecks of vehicles and bombed cities.

Stockholm on January 15th 2013: a cleaner boarded the train. All she did was close the doors (it was in the middle of winter, so quite cold outside). This started the engine and since the brakes weren't engaged (which they should have been), the train started rolling, faster and faster until it derailed and crashed into the house. The tenant in the flat got a lucky escape but the young cleaner got badly hurt. While she lay sedated in hospital the company (Arriva) running the trains accused her of stealing the train, but technical finds revealed that several safety measures had not been applied.

In the modern day and age, this manifests as our curiosity whenever there is a traffic accident. It’s almost cliche to say things like “I couldn’t look away,” when we recall driving or walking past a car crash, but it does reflect a deep-seated inquisitiveness we have toward destruction. Many people will slow down, partially due to safety concerns, as one crash might be an indicator of risk factors in the area.

i WAS AT A Long's Drugs (not sure if they are still round) and some idiot that worked there was moving a shelving unit with a dolly and crashed it on the hood of my car (not a Ferrari). He tried to act as if nothing happened, but I was just walking out the store as it happened, so I waited for his next move, which was to recover the shelving unit and walk away. I wasn't happy and I tore him and his manager (he was the assistant manager) a new one. Mostly for the walking away bit and the stupid argument he tried to make as if it was my fault for parking my car where he was going to lose control of his load.

Honestly, it’s more that disaster strikes when correct loading procedures are not followed, because weight and balance is a real issue. Correctly load these containers so that the heavier ones are on the bottom and the inside of the stack, and all of your lighter containers are on the top and outside, and these ships have no problem. Rushing your dock workers results in disaster for all

Our brains are somewhat helpful in this regard. Relationally, a car crash, for example, or any other less common disaster is a bad thing. But our minds are clever enough to know that there might be important data, so they will want us to look. Our brains are more engaged when there is a negative emotion present, allowing us to quickly analyze the situation and learn whatever lessons there are to be learned. It seems that “smart people learn from others' mistakes,” is a core feature of our psyche.

I was driving on a highway in Boston MA, probably going about 70 mph (115 kph). A brand new, red, tricked-out pick-up truck whipped past me, definitely going well over 100 mph (160 kph). A little later, I got off at an exit, and there was the truck, lying on its side. The very young driver was outside, staring at it in astonishment.

Our consciousness is also somewhat assisted by the knowledge that there are solutions. We live in a materially rich world, cars can be fixed or replaced, and buildings repaired. Many people have insurance. This knowledge helps us rationalize these disasters and turn them into a bit of entertainment. Yes, it probably wouldn’t feel great to walk outside after a storm, see your own ruined property and think “That looks expensive,” but even bad luck has its own sort of charm.

In fact, if a person can laugh at themselves, and by extension, their own misfortune, that is a sign of better emotional well-being. Plus, if you can afford something that is expensive to fix, you might already be in a better position than most. So finding humor in downright bad luck is a good way for the brain to rationalize what is happening and release a little joy in an otherwise unfortunate situation. So, if you want to explore others’ misfortune a bit more, Bored Panda has got you covered, check out our pieces here, here, and here.

I assisted at an accident where an elderly lady did that. She ran a red right into the fuel tank of an 18 wheeler. On checking on her found she was on Oxygen and a few feet away there was diesel fuel spilling from the ruptured tank. A man and I helped her to a safe place to await authorities. She told me she had intended to quit driving and sell her van once she got home because she was getting so nervous driving. Then this happened. Thankfully she and the driver were ok.

A student was returning from a party to his apartment in the center of Lille at night when he was struck. The wall in the hallway had shifted. He alerted the fire department and the house was evacuated before it collapsed. Nevertheless, one person died. The investigations initiated by the judiciary are to clarify, among other things, whether renovation work on one of the buildings triggered the collapse. Experts had begun examining adjacent buildings for stability and safety, the mayor announced. According to media reports, another third building adjacent to the ruins was expected to collapse on Sunday. - from a German Newspaper -

On average every airliner is hit about once per year. The Faraday cage effect causes the electricity to pass harmlessly over the skin of the aircraft. The electronics have systems to protect them. They can exacerbate existing problems and the aircraft should be thoroughly inspected after a strike, but I'm only aware of one case where it actually endangered the aircraft.

i wouldn't be surprised if we find out working conditions are similarly terrible on these ships and this man was forced to work while sleep deprived. :\

Also seems strange that such a large vessel only had a single crew member on bridge who could have seen a cargo ship in the distance, so probably understaffed too

Last Saturday I took the Black Ball Ferry from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, British Columbia in Canada, and one thing that surprised me was how banged up the bow section of the boat was ("Kinda like your car," said the significant other). I think you can see some of it in the picture I posted. This make me believe that hitting sh!t seems to be quite common for sea-going vessels. coho-ferry...30a4a2.jpg coho-ferry-Victoria-bc-644be6430a4a2.jpg

Given the age of the vehicle the problem is more likely to be related to aged fuel lines or an improperly located fuel filter.

Interestingly, most modern tanks, with the exception of the British Challenger tank, don't have rifled barrels. Not sure what tank this is.

My dad and sister got caught in this. My sister got out of the car after someone rear ended her and someone else slid and ran over her foot. She’s OK, it was mostly just badly bruised.

Not the lug nuts. The pickup driver modified his wheel/tire combo with offsets. The extra strain put in the hub assembly caused it to snap. A couple of auto related sites wrote fairly detailed breakdowns on this incident.

Southern USA here - ive known people to loosen the lug nuts of thier enemies cars just so this happens. No injuries, but to repair the bent axil costs tons of money.

Because no one was unalived, this makes me think of the comedian Ron White. "I got new tires for my van and as I drove out of the parking lot, the wheel falls off, it FALLS OFF, it FALLS THE F OFF."

I recall reading the full story on this. The dealer told him this camper was within the payload limits of his truck, which it theoretically was (4900lbs for the camper, 5850lbs capacity for the truck). However, once you load the camper with water, fuel, gear, etc it was well over the 5850lb limit (also had a motorcycle strapped to the back and gear mounted on the roof). He drove the truck 25000 miles overloaded and the frame snapped. Dodge didn't cover this under warranty and I wouldn't either. He either needed a smaller camper or a bigger truck.

I see a few. Something doesn't add up though. Those walls have been sheetrocked. You wouldn't do that until the roof and windows were in place. If the structure was built to that point, wind wouldn't matter unless it was hurricane force or more in which case the entire structure would be gone and there sure wouldn't be a BMW parked there as if noting happened. If anything, this looks more like a roof collapse which pushed the walls out. Roof collapse still indicates a structural deficiency or design flaw

In this case, the aircraft was recovered from nearly 12,000 feet of water by U.S. 7th Fleet’s Task Force 75 and Naval Sea Systems Command with the assistance of 'Picasso' which is a special support ship owned by a Singapore company and flagged in the Bahamas.

This is sufficiently sized that it needed an oversize load permit and a 'point' vehicle. Also, someone failed with route planning. The DOT will be highly displeased with whoever owns this trucking company.

Always ALWAYS give trucks as much space as you can! They tip over extremely easily if the tires get just a teeny tiny bit outside the road -which is why they always drive so close to the middle of the road. Also, because of their weight and size they are slower at getting up in speed as well as slower to break down/halt. And they do need a lot of space for turning. Because of their size.

If you end up in sudden water like this, you really have no choice but keep going. If you brake you're done. Keep moving forward and you can at least get to the otherside. This is specifically in cases where is unavoidable and clear its not MOVING water, and here, where they are basically sandwiched between two larger cars, avoiding it would have been difficult

I think the protest is not aimed at Ferrari specifically but rather at the idea of having a car show to promote gas-guzzling cars ('Mondial de l'Auto' is the name of the car show. in the banner they have turned it into 'Mondial de l'auto-destruction' which means something like 'World fair of self-destruction').
