Social media can be a bafflingly hilarious place at times. It’s very hard to guess what memes will go viral (or why!). Nor can we ever be certain what will end up becoming a part of internet culture in the long run. However, the relatability of a meme is one major factor to keep in mind. Case in point, ‘The European Mind Can’t Comprehend This’ memes continue to raise eyebrows as they both amuse and confuse internet users in the United States and Europe.

To put it simply, these witty and slightly self-deprecating memes are a way for Americans to gently poke fun at European cultureas well as their own—by showing how different they think they are. The entire point is to post something from the US that might (semi-ironically) ‘shock’ someone living in Europe. Scroll down for the freshest memes and a reminder about how strange internet humor can get.

Bored Panda reached out to Substack blogger and X (formerly Twitter) user @JSlaughterEsq, one of the people who created some of the first 'The European Mind Can't Comprehend This' memes. He was kind enough to share some of his thoughts about the popularity of these memes, as well as American culture and self-perception. You'll find his insights below.

ngl, the white gravy with the sausage lumps always puts me off because it looks a bit vomit-esque, but yet.. I'd still be willing to try it.

Some places just give you the white gravy, but it's like eating paste without sausage.

Southernees don't eat their biscuits and gravy that way. The biscuits are split and the gravy is spooned (or poured) over them. That said, I would eat those mini biscuits dipped in gravy.

They would probably be even crispier. My mom used to take leftover biscuits the next day, then open face them with cheese on top & put in the toaster oven. Even better.

Substack blogger and X user @JSlaughterEsq shared his thoughts with Bored Panda about why 'The European Mind Can't Comprehend This' memes have been such a big hit on the internet.

“I believe the meme is popular with Americans because we have something similar to an inferiority complex, and the meme allows us to project our culture as something that is too extreme, rugged, or masculine for Europeans,” he shared his perspective.

"It is partly a defense mechanism but simultaneously speaks to the reality that America has a rugged spirit that appears nonexistent in Western Europe."

Some internet users who see these sorts of memes take them a tad too personally. We were curious to get the blogger's thoughts on how everyone can learn to take these memes, as well as themselves, slightly less seriously.

"I think people need to realize there is truth in most memes—that is why they are funny, and that laughing at our differences is a way for us to better understand each other," @JSlaughterEsq said.

The blogger also shared a few thoughts about the possible culture shocks that someone from Europe might face when they visit the United States for the very first time.

"The size of the US is something that may shock most Europeans," he said. "Visiting New York is not the same as visiting Alabama. It would be similar to visiting Germany and comparing that experience to Spain."

He added that the Southern US is incredible when it comes to hospitality. "Many Europeans would be shocked at how friendly Southerners are. Plus, the gun culture is something most Europeans cannot seem to understand.”

The trend to create and (re)share ‘The European Mind Can’t Comprehend This’ memes first started taking root on the X social network less than a year ago.

At the core of the meme is the idea of posting jokes about real or perceived cultural differences between living in the United States and the European continent.

According to Know Your Meme, the earliest recorded version of a ‘The European Mind Can’t Comprehend This’ meme was spotted on July 27, 2023. The post on X featured performer Micahel ‘Chili Dawn’ Castleberry, who played the guitar using a beer bottle, using it as a slide. That particular post, made by user @TPropositi (now @JSlaughterEsq, whom we got in touch with), got 26k likes in a month.

Two days later, after that popular post, the meme took its first steps toward even greater virality. X user @rob_mcsta shared a photo of an ice box with the tag ‘The European Mind Can’t Comprehend This’ and got 3k likes in a month. Things ramped up after that. On September 4, user @powerbottomdad1 shared a screenshot of how long it takes to travel from NYC to LA by car, getting 67k likes in just two days.

In response, some X social network users started posting ‘The American Mind Can’t Comprehend This’ memes. Some popular examples of this meme, which got thousands of likes on the platform, included pictures of a handle being used to crack open the top of the window, as well as a European Union ID card.

Many folks enjoy these memes, as evidenced by the constant stream of activity on the X social network. X users love making new memes. Other internet users, however, aren’t such big fans of the concept behind ‘The European Mind Can’t Comprehend This.’ They believe that the memes are ‘evidence’ that one culture is ‘better’ than the other. Or they see it as an ‘attack’ on American or European culture. This can’t be further from the truth.

For me, it's like with many things in the US. On the surface it looks really cool. You always have the greatest, biggest, highest, most deep fried of everything. But once you think about it, it makes you feel grateful for the existence of the Atlantic ocean. Great to visit once in a while for thrills, but too crazy to live there.

There is a rumor that the one here in Vegas is losing money. If true, that probably helped keep the one in London from being built. I'm glad for the people there that don't have to deal with it. Most of these content creators only ever make these memes to make people laugh and smile. They do this by sharing spot-on insights, purposefully exaggerating cultural differences, or using irony to hone in on popular stereotypes. This doesn’t mean that we should celebrate low-level humor (it’s important to be honest with ourselves about what is and isn’t funny).

However, it does mean that we owe it to ourselves not to be overly serious about something as straightforward as silly internet pics. Travel broadens the mind, and if anything, these memes are an invitation for everyone to expand their cultural horizons.

I'm an American and I've never had a double Big Mac in my life. I've probably had one regular Big Mac in my life and I didn't finish it. Prices are so high these days you can get a lot better burger for the same price as fast food burgers. .

And the funniest part, if you drive around aus a lot like me, you’ll notice in the city they advertise the single Big Mac or quarter pounder then you drive 2-3 hrs out rural and the signs advertised road side are doubles and then you get to ‘outback’ / ‘ bum fùck no where’ and they have triple or quadruple quarter pounders on the signs 😂 it’s funny

The obsession with gold is fascinating. Do you actually get the gold bar? If not, it’s just like any other “buy gold” scheme where all you really own is a certificate that says you own gold. Second of all, in a real emergency, gold is every bit as worthless as any other form of currency.

Most of us probably know that all cultures have their pros and cons. A big part of humor means being self-aware and comfortable enough to accept reality and to gently make fun of our own flaws.

In this case, this means acknowledging that one’s culture might not be ‘perfect’ and embracing those quirks with the help of some lighthearted content. It’s meant to be amusing, not analytical.

Since humor is the main topic here, we have to accept that some of these posts are going to be subjectively (un)funny to some people. Simply put, we tend to like different jokes. Also, you can’t expect all of these cultural comparisons to make sense—many of these differences are hyperbolized to a massive extent, all for the sake of comedy. Some people love it. Others don’t.

The point is not to take the memes (or oneself) too seriously: these images are not objective insights or in-depth analyses of culture. There might be a kernel of truth in them, but the focus is on the comedy!

It's the Old Bay seasoning. I can't fathom it either. Basically, they scoop up the road salt after a good blizzard and save it for putting on crabs. Nothing ruins the delicate flavor of crab better than road salt. But now Maryland has a crazy level of regional pride in their unique seasoning.... TBH, probably works on fries much better than on crab.

In fairness, the US doesn't have the weirdest chip flavors. Bays is a common fish seasoning, but other countries have truly weird flavors, many of which are inexplicably fish flavored (not what comes to mind with potato chips, not for me anyway). Canada: Covered Bridge Atlantic Lobster Chips; Thailand: Lays Baked Scallop with Butter and Garlic Chips; South Korea, Nongshim Seafood & Octopus Chips; Russia: Lays Red Caviar; Scotland: Mackie's Whisky & Haggis (ok, that one's just racist - or ethnicist or whatever - and not fish themed at all, but I liked how weird it was).

It is a seasoning made from salt, paprika, red pepper, celery seed, etc. Slightly spicy but not really hot, similar to a Cajun seasoning. Used alot on things like steamed crab and shrimp.

I am known for having a sweet tooth and will raid the baking cupboard for sprinkles and all sorts to get my fix if we don't have anything that will hit the spot, but the first time I tried Hershey's I spat it right back out again. My kids like to try foreign candy, thus we had Hersheys kisses once. It's like eating hard butter with chemical sprinkles.. even the sweet tooth in the house didn't like it. Churro KitKat sounds very interesting.. might have to do a trip to Amsterdam to raid the (international) candy stores there!

Because we deal with heat differently and the houses are built according to climate. An Italian house is constructed differently than a Norwegian house. Both can cope with the temperatures easily, due to material used and type of insulation

We also have this for our single family home. One unit covers the living areas and the other covers the bedrooms. Less wasted energy because you can turn it off in areas you're not using.

UK houses don't need air con. It rarely gets hot enough. Also, most of our houses were built long before air con became widely used.

Not with climate change. European countries that don't have A/C units wished they had them during the most recent unusual heatwaves.

Houses in the South have a lower R factor, less insulation and the 100 F degree heat seeps into the house pretty quickly.

So you can cut and decorate individual pieces? I've never seen one but it's no different than a store bought cake, cookie dough, etc?

Yeah, the main reason this is weird is that Rice Krispy Treats are ridiculously easy to make--I think I first made them when I was about six. The premade individually packaged bars *kind of* make sense as a convenience item, or if you just want to eat one and not have to buy a whole box of cereal & bag of marshmallows, but if you want a big sheet of it to decorate, it makes more sense to just make them. You just melt butter and marshmallows, stir in the cereal, and spread it in a cake pan.

German beer, and really any European beer is basically nasty water compared to the beer in America. Our craft beer industry is the most revered worldwide and brewers like Russian river brewing produce beers like Pliny the Younger which people wait all year for and wait in 8+ hour lines because it is far superior

I had my first “Old Style” while in Chicago in December. I’d never even heard of it before then; I guess it hasn’t made it to the southwest US. It was fine, on par with other American style lagers of that area like PBR and Hamm’s.

Funny how the average American thinks that Europe is only made of small mediaeval villages with tiny shops scattered through steep cobblestone alleys. I mean...we have many of those. But most people live in modern places and at least at a 5km radius from a superstore.

Their quality is excellent. The company tests all products before they allow them to be sold there. I've been told the workers are treated well and paid well for this type of job. It's a pleasant shopping experience, aside from the crowds. Remember, much of the US housing is spread out, so outside our largest cities, we don't shop every day for food, and we must drive most places. It's just a different culture and a different way of life.
