‘Are you by chance an American?’ is a phrase often used online to refer to someone who lacks awareness or is oblivious to the obvious. It stems from the stereotype that people from the US aren’t as knowledgeable as those in other parts of the world. It’s hard to say how this generalization came to be, but it sure can sometimes make even Americans themselves chuckle.

The truth is that we all do silly things, so why not just laugh about them together? That’s exactly why our Bored Panda team put together a list of instances when common sense just slipped Americans' minds. Scroll down to find them below, and don’t forget that it's all in good fun!

There was a news article about a school in Scotland banning mobile phones and one of the comments was how will hey call for help if there's a shooting? Well, they haven't had one for 30 years, so I doubt it's particularly concerning them.

Unlike the US, when Scotland had a school m******e, they changes the laws to RESTRICT gun ownership. And of course it worked.

There are no security measures and no active shooter drills because there are no active shooters. Maybe not everything can be solved just by giving people more guns...

Maybe because we Europeans are not triggerhappy and teach people to "defend theirselves" by supplying even more guns.

Sorry, what??? If you feel so unsafe in Amsterdam that you think schools need security against violent behaviour, maybe scoot back to your precious MAGA land where guns are everywhere and shootings a normal occurrence. When you moved to Europe, did you miss the message that it is NOT a part of the US and that things are quite different here. Much better, but that is just my humble opinion. Please go home where you belong with your proud MAGA announcement

So if someone is such a staunch supporter of the Cheeto-in-Chief that they feel the need to advertise it in their handle, why don't they take their own advice and f**k back off to the States instead of living the migrant life in the Netherlands?

Just hear me out, because Lily is on to something here. If their aim really is to make America great then she's done the right thing by leaving, because the more people like her leave America, the greater America will be. The downside, of course, is that it comes at a cost to the countries they move to...but at least they won't be armed over here.

Well, here in Denmark there are security at Jewish schools and other places related to Judaism. I feel so sorry for the kids having to go through all that fear, especially in a country where all other kids are worry-free when it comes to school shootings. It was started because some a-hole did a shooting in a synagogue (iirc).

I have a co-worker who overheard me talking about an upcoming trip to Europe, and he said "I'd never go to Europe because I can't bring my Desert Eagle." I was going to Belgium. Who the hell needs a hand cannon for a vacation in Europe?!? Gun hoarders in America are so cowardly it's hilarious. And ironically, they think owning 15 guns and packing heat to go buy a sandwich makes them look tough.

It’s clear from this list that the lack of awareness among Americans is hard to miss online. But where they really shine is when they travel, and even Kim Davis, TV presenter and journalist at CNN, can’t deny it.

“It’s a hard pill to swallow, but sadly, we’ve gained a reputation around the world for being, well, ‘stupid Americans.’ Is it offensive? Yes. Could we get upset about it? Sure. But with tens of millions of Americans traveling abroad every year, the likelihood is that you’ll encounter us wherever you are in the world. Therefore, our reputation is completely understandable,” she admitted in one of her travel articles.

The thing about those idiots is when the tables are turned they have zero respect for their leaders when the ones they want didn't get elected. Every single trump supporter is a hypocrite. It's like a requirement to join that plug. Trash Biden for four years, bash Obama for four years, then scream "have respect for your leaders he's your president". Then it's always "f**k your feelings" and "men don't cry and complain" followed by obsessively whining about how white men are picked on and no one likes me when I say stupid s**t" and also "eveytime I lie someone calls it out or "censors" me". All the f*****g idiots in America are trump followers. And it's not an opinion it's verifiable that they are stupid as f**k. You can literally measure it just by asking questions that have factual answers and have been proven. They are absolutely stupid that's just a fact. So if you are a trump supporter you are an idiot.

Yes and no. The concept of the net started in the USA, but the protocols by which the internet works toady were started in CERN, by, as stated above, Tim Berners-Lee. Overall, it was the result of international collaboration. Nobody "invented" the internet. Also, even though the concept of the internet as it is did emerge in the USA, it didn't pop out of nowhere. I'm certain that we can find the idea popping up in Sci-Fi and other literature and poplar culture for a few decades earlier.

Wrong. Berners-Lee developed http/html, nothing more. The underlying data transport protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, ARP, DHCP, POP3, SMTP, SNMP, UDP etc were all developed in the US for use on the ARPANET.

Not to be that guy but there is more to the internet than the world wide web, which was indeed created by Time Berners-Lee. There's email, IoT, FTP, NNTP etc. But my guess is that when she said "online" she did mean websites and apps that use the internet.

Yo, people! Have you noticed in the last three months how many posters are slamming Americans, calling them stupid, etc? How respect for the US seems to be doing an increasingly fast slide into the toilet? Anybody care to venture a guess why? What significant event happened in January that has brought the US into an increasingly bad light? Yup, the Orange A****t with his MAGA bull excrement. MAGA---short for Make America Gag All the rest of the world--got up and demonstrating everything we should be embarrassed for.. And for the MAGGOTS out there--You live in the United States, which is only 1/3 of the North American continent. We have a North and a South America. So his stupid Made in China hat should read MUSGA anyway. Signed, Once a proud resident of the USA, now just someone standing in the corner, hoping nobody thinks I'm with the idiot circus..

To be honest Andie - it's not the last few months. I'm nearly 50 and I'm unaware of a time when it's been any different. However, it's not like all the other countries are respecting each other either. Check out posts slamming other countries, you will find most (well Europeans at least) join in and laugh, and don't try to be defensive so much. Leaders come and go.

According to her, people in most countries are polite and won’t ever say to others what they’re doing is offensive or socially unacceptable, which makes it hard for tell-me-like-it-is Americans to catch on to social cues.

So she recommends trying to notice if people they come into contact with are genuinely interested, like asking a lot of follow-up questions, making eye contact, building on their stories, asking to join in, etc., or are they just being polite? “If your Spidey sense starts to tingle, it’s probably time to change the subject or move on to a new activity,” Davis advised.

While I am completely beside the point here: There really IS such a thing like "Europeish" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_English. Using English as a means of communications between non-native speakers instead of just regionally, the English commonly spoken in the EU outside of English-speaking countries has taken on a life of its own and is, by now, considered an autonomous dialect by some linguists.

Her next tip is to keep the volume down. “It is very true that most Americans have a wonderful zest for life. However, in many places around the world, speaking loudly is considered extremely rude and highly uncommon. The only place where Latin is an official language is at the Vatican and I suspect the birth rate there is fairly low, resulting in few residents being raised as native speakers of Latin. It's not a definitive source, but Wikipedia's page on languages of South America has exactly one instance of the word "Latin" and it's in the phrase "Latin America". The languges there are largely descended from classical Latin, but I agree that it would be a significant challenge to find a job candidate that speaks Latin as their native language.

A good percentage of Americans forget that other countries exist and everyone should just cater to Americans because clearly the best most awesome country is the one f*****g over its citizens, sending citizens and immigrants and migrants to essentially death camps, AGAIN MIND YOU, stripping basic human rights while also isolating its allies and supporting actual dictatorship and genocide. They are this thick.

Another recommendation she has is trying to blend in— but not for the reasons you might think of! “Normally, I’m all for originality and standing out in a crowd. However, when you’re traveling abroad, even to a place you know well, standing out is like wearing a flashing sign that says, ‘I’m a tourist, come take advantage of me!’”

Pickpockets or someone else with malicious intent can spot someone who isn’t a local from a mile away, that’s why it’s better to blend in with the locals. “Not only will it make you a smart American, it’ll also make you a safer American,” she said.

Davis also suggests doing homework beforehand to avoid getting ripped off or taken advantage of. “Know the local scams and know how to reject people who approach you with their games. Stranger danger is real.” For this, reading the local news can be very helpful.

And now, thanks to RFK Jr., we will have more additives (by way of bacteria) being added AND the American people won't know because the FDA isn't going to test it anymore (YAY cutting funding!) they'll just get sick and some will die and you can thank RFK Jr. and DJT for that. I hate this timeline.

I point out stuff like this to fellow US citizens frequently and they get upset because they think it's stating the obvious. They "know" most humans grow hair but that's not what they mean. They act like because something is trendy it represents a baseline of reality and they get very insecure when you point out this bias with facts. It's maddening living here sometimes and they do this with all kinds of stuff relating to personal expression.

One of the most badass US soldiers was trained by them, his name was Dan Daly. Dan Daly won the Congressional Medal of Honor twice, then the government changed the rule because he was up for a third one (deservedly). Now you can earn only one.

Yup! I did more research. In 2022, the US was 13th in Global food security out of 113 countries studied. While it scored lower than many European countries, it is still some of the best places to get food. Coming from a 3rd world immigrant, Americans do have a lot of privilege that most people don't have, but it is often overlooked.

Food security primarily references the access to food, not health and safety. Yes, it is expected that the food is safe but it is not looking primarily at how healthy.

We call them “hikes” because most of are frankly too lazy or too conditioned to actually walk anywhere and we’ll drive half a mile just to go to the local corner store. It’s also the competitive drive that’s been instilled in most of us. It’s sounds way more exciting to say that you went hiking than to just say that you went on a long walk. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Again, not true. The Grand Italian Trail, at 3700 miles, goes both around and across Italy. This trail is longer than both the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. You also have the E1 trail at 4300 miles (6920 km), which runs from Norway, through Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and finishes in Italy. There is also the E3 trail which is 4320 miles (6950 km). Which runs from Portugal to Turkey, passing through Spain, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

Americans have (always?) self identified by the group their ancestors came from. Though they often only seem to pick that heritage they're interested in. Almost no one in USA is of a single ethnic/national background. My ancestors were French, Irish and Native American. So where should I go? The truth is no one outside the US cares, it's just another way to create "us and them" scenarios

This was obviously a joke. That said, all three of my kids were born in the US. My first language is Portuguese, and one day I was speaking with my mother, in my native tongue. My son (maybe 7 at the time) asked me why I can't just speak in a "human" language. I've never let him live that down.

My kid was on a school trip and they stopped for a break. The toilet signs weren't in French and my kid explained they were in Flemish because they were in Belgium. To which someone said that Belgians speak French... My kid asks 'Where do they speak Flemish then?'. "Flemland". And that is how my brother now lives in Flemland... Not one teacher on that trip knew any Dutch so my 13 y/o had to translate 🤦‍♀️

In Hungary there's a candy called Negro with a black character representing a chimney sweeper. The reason is that the candy is black and it's used to help with a sore throat. A couple of years ago a rapper from the US was touring in Budapest and having a bit of a sore throat, he asked for something to help with it. You can probably imagine the rest.

Most Americans don't understand that Europe goes on to the Ural Mountains. The largest country in Europe, by a huge margin, is the Russian part of Europe. Russia covers almost 40% of Europe, and most Americans don't realize just how far Europe keeps on going after you cross the border with Russia. BTW, The area of Russia in Europe is some 5X the area of Texas.

The USA is a federal republic wich means a federation of states with a republican form of government.... in theory, in reality it's more of a kleptocracy.

“Free” hotel breakfast is the same as getting “free” champagne in first class. It’s not free, it’s included in the price. Besides, in most European towns, you can go out for breakfast. A local cafe will probably be superior to a hotel breakfast.

Am i right in thinking that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their extreme wickedness, particularly their unrighteousness and lack of compassion for the poor. The story, detailed in Genesis, highlights their arrogant and cruel behavior, emphasizing that their sins were not only the sexual ones often associated with the story, but also a broader disregard for justice and kindness. So carry on USA, your going well .....

No, it's because the Bible is from Israel. Comparison: Almost all US TV shows take place in New York or Texas or whatever. In the bible, it's Jerusalem, Bethlehem, or others. (Btw, side note, Israel presumably gets its name from Jacob, a biblical figure who had 12 children, 10 with his first wife, who he was tricked into marrying because first wife was oldest, then remarried to the younger one Rachel and had two other kids, who were Joseph and then many years after Benjamin)

I don't think this is ignorance. I think it's a fair question for somebody who hasn't had to go shopping without a car. A 30 minute round-trip walk in hilly terrain carry bags would be exhausting. I am lucky enough to live about 15 minutes walking to my grocery store. I tend to go shopping every other day or so, buying only what I need for the next two days. That all usually fits in two disposable bags, and that's not too heavy to carry home. If I have to buy more than that, or heavy items, I will take my bike, which has a little trailer on the back. I can load 8 bags into that thing without too much issue. But I live in the US, I just really hate driving.

My nearest grocery store is about a 15 minute walk, it is a small village shop that sells everyday items and I go there 2-3 times a week. My nearest supermarket is in either Poole, Wareham or Swanage about 15 miles away and I shop there once a week. If I didn't have a car it would be no problem because there are buses to at least one of those towns roughly every 30 minutes and the bus stops 50 metres from my house.

I live 30 minutes (by foot) from my preferred supermarket, and 20 minutes from the open air market. We shop mainly on foot because I was raised not to jump in the car for everything. But then nearly all UK towns predate the automobile, so that makes sense.

We used to walk three miles just to get the milk and bread every few days. It was Gorgeous. Across the fields, over a tiny beck, seeing the new lambs, scrumping apples from the orchard we went through, all the Birdsong and animals calling out, and bringing back from the village shop anything else required. Bloody marvellous. It still fun when it was pissing it down too. Catch the bus to town at the end of the lane once a week to stock up at the greengrocers, butchers and what else required. 15 minutes and hilly, Gods they move to a beautiful place and don't know how to appreciate it 😞
