And in Victorian times, it was very briefly believed that the eyeballs of murder victims worked like a camera at the moment of death. So the authorities would cut the lens of the eyes off, look at them closely and try to see if they could find the face of the killer. Good on them for trying such zany and, I suppose, innovative ideas back then- can't really blame them when they already had such little scientific help to solve crimes.
This was actually tried somewhat recently, and the crazy part is that it kinda worked. At least in rabbits, but the pictures were extremely blurry and not useful. They could not get it to work with humans.
