Aaliyah died in a plane crash a few years later. But for the next two decades, Kelly was accused of preying on teenage girls in the entertainment industry. The predator was finally pinned down, found guilty of a range of sickening crimes. And sent to jail for thirty years.

In the US, that's so often the case, especially if the accused is famous, well-liked/admired, & wealthy. They're painted as liars, just after $. & Especially the women accusers. The accused, if he admits to having had sex with a woman who says she was SA,* he'll claim it was consensual. Not surprisingly, a lot of the public - including women - will be of the opinion that the woman enticed him, sometimes by dressing provocatively, as part of a set-up to get $. I'm sure some ARE liars & after $. But I tend to give more credence to accusations against prominent sports figures. [NOTE: I'm in absolutely no way saying the following applies in all cases.] In the US, young athletes (sometimes starting as early as middle school, then thru high school) showing tremendous talent & with outstanding success on the fields/courts, leading their teams to school championships, often are catered to, have their every want/whim fulfilled, receive special privileges, have any bad behavior excused (boys will be boys, you know) or covered up - teacher's have even been pressured to raise grades so the student athletes will meet the grade requirements for playing sports. And in colleges it gets worse. I don't know how much it happens now but in recent memory when highly sought after high school athletes were invited to the various school campuses to see what campus life is like (& to get the hard sell on signing with the school), it's not been unheard of that very attractive female students are assigned to give them the campus tours. Supporters/boosters of colleges have been known to break rules, giving college athletes cars, money, token summer jobs in their businesses, etc. They may get enrolled in crip courses in order to keep their grade averages up . [When I was in college, the "student" athletes were housed in a separate dorm (I never saw pictures of the inside but supposedly it & the rooms were among - if not nicer than - the best dorms of the general student population.) near the practice facilities. They had special meals (as if they were eating at a pro team's training table), enforced study periods, tutors, & escorts to ensure they actually attended classes.] If they then advance to the pros & are successful, some are practically worshipped by sports fans + they can get paid unconscionable amounts of $. So, from their childhoods they've been taught they're special & are entitled to anything/everything they want & will get it - or it's ok to take it - sometimes including women. *(D Trump once denied a SA accusation, saying he'd never had sex with the woman & never would - she wasn't that attractive.)

Kids in the UK knew. We all did. You just had a feeling about him. I had an uncle like that - we just knew never to be alone with him. The trial was dropped because she refused to testify most likely due to her name being leaked. They did reach a settlement which seems to indicate he was guilty. Just so aggravating that he skated by punishment and people forget what he did and make him a hero and bury this part of his past.

From what i know about his trials things were not as conclusive as they seemed. Lots of kids came out saying their parents made them lie. Including another child actor the one form home alone. I'm kind of bothered by some of the language used to describe the very young girls who were being exploited, or to describe what happened to them. As well, I'm bothered by the language used regarding ADULT women, in which the adults are being infantilized with condescending language, as if an adult can't make their own decisions, in a way that's rarely done with men in their 20s. If an adult woman wants to date an older man, that's her right as an adult. Some of the language in this article is disturbingly misogynistic.

With the exception of gandhi and the pope, both of whom claimed to be "celibate", EVERY SINGLE ONE of those listed is a cisgender heterosexual male. Every. One. And yet if you try to address the fact the cis hetero males are disproportionately more likely to commit the crimes, other cis hetero males (and other cis heteros, period) come out from under their rocks to spew whataboutisms, deflecting to name singular cases instead of addressing the danger cis het males pose to society. I'm kind of bothered by some of the language used to describe the very young girls who were being exploited, or to describe what happened to them. As well, I'm bothered by the language used regarding ADULT women, in which the adults are being infantilized with condescending language, as if an adult can't make their own decisions, in a way that's rarely done with men in their 20s. If an adult woman wants to date an older man, that's her right as an adult. Some of the language in this article is disturbingly misogynistic.

In fairness I think I've seen this talk with relationships where the man is say 22 and the woman 42 as well. There's kind of a thing now that age-gap relationships are bad even if both are fully adults. Not sure where it came from.
