Most of us have common sense and avoid dangerous things. Of course, there are adrenaline junkies who like motorcycles, bungee jumping, and rock climbing. But even then, our brain registers that what we're doing is dangerous. We prepare mentally and physically, so there’s no shock if something unfortunate does happen.
But what about the things we sometimes do but have no idea how dangerous they are? One person was wondering the exact same thing, so they decided to ask others: "What are some really dangerous things most people don't realize are dangerous?" If you're curious to know what everyday things you maybe should stop doing, scroll down and see for yourself!

Driving fast in parking lots.
Lost a cousin to someone who was driving fast in a parking lot. Don't do it.
Once we start calling sunburn radiation burns, people will start taking it seriously.
Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before exposure to UV in order to create the intended protective barrier. It should be applied liberally and evenly to clean and dry skin. For an adult, the recommended application is 5mL (approximately one teaspoon) for each arm, leg, body front, body back and face (including neck and ears). That equates to a total of 35mL (approximately seven teaspoons) for a full body application. And reapplied every two hours - to cool dry skin
Load More Replies...And remember to wear sunglasses that actually protect from UV! You don't wanna join me in waiting for a cataract surgery...
Driving while not getting enough sleep.
True. A few seconds of "micro-sleep" while driving would be enough to lose control and crash into another car, a tree or some other obstacle. Get proper rest before driving.
Absolutely agree. And I have to admit that it happened to me once (Edit: when I was around 21 and thought that tiredness was an older people's issue) - on the German Autobahn. It was a really, really long day and at 2 am I had to drive back 120 km to my parents' as I was about to get picked up there the next morning to go on a holiday... Long story short, I drove, feeling absolutely tired, my eyes were burning from keeping them open. I blinked and instead still driving in the right lane, I've already crossed the middle lane, now being in the left lane and heading straight towards the middle safety railing. Could correct my course in the last second! Luckily the highway was pretty deserted, so nobody (including me) got harmed. Never again!
Load More Replies...Happened to a friend of mine. He said what felt like a blink landed him in a ditch, paralyzed from the waist down.
Once stopped a woman who was bouncing off other cars as she was falling asleep only waking when she bounced off another car.
My grandmother fell asleep at the wheel while driving herself and her friend early in the morning. The friend did not survive the crash. She was haunted by that. Please don't drive tired
The top answers in this thread bring awareness to some dangerous activities people should know about. Like driving with barely any sleep. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report in 2017, drowsy driving resulted in 91,000 crashes. 50,000 of those ended in injuries and nearly 800 even in deaths.
What's the way to prevent it? Get enough sleep! Adults need a minimum of 7 hours of sleep a day, while teenagers need 8. The CDC recommends sticking to a sleep schedule. And if you're prone to snoring or a sleep disorder, don't hesitate to talk to your doctor about it.
Moving water.
It can only take 6 inches of fast flowing water to knock you over, and double that can float a car.
On another note: the fastest water can flow on it's own is 30 kph (around 20 mph). Having said that: a wall one foot high, moving at 20 mph will destroy quite a lot in its path.
We had some seriously heavy rains back in 2018 when I lived in hoco Maryland. It created such a flood that century old trees looked like snapped toothpicks.

Pregnancy and birth.
Wonder how many on this site almost died during birt or would have died if the didn't get a c-section?
I had an emergency csection with my first. Neither of us would be here today if I hadn't had one!
Load More Replies...This needs to be much higher on the list... Not nearly enough women know about this.
It's really not true that people hundreds of years ago 'died by 40'. If people made it out of childhood/early teen years, they were likely to live till their 60s and 70s. Even a few early 80s.
Natural childbirth is a beautiful thing if all goes well but the mortality rate for mothers with complications throughout history has always been horrific. Thank goodness for modern medicine - even then tragedies still happen. It saddens me that some women feel natural childbirth is the only way - it often didn’t work out so well in the past.
I didn’t have a c section but after a normal birth haemorrhaged badly and only survived because of modern medicine.
Much more likely to die in pregnancy & birth than on any birth control method
Major reason so many women in the past died was from complications due to giving birth.
Almost died my youngest boy the placenta ruptured. I had to get a big transfusion. I didn’t know until the doctor told me I was pretty flippant for someone who almost died.
Combining different cleaning products can lead to toxic gas in the room.
I worked at McDonald's when I was 16-18. The cleaning bomb buckets we made were literally hazardous to health. We would add a bit of everything to the mop bucket and see how much of a reaction we could create. I'm truly surprised no one died.
Eating at McDonald's can also lead to toxic gas in the room.

Does nobody read the instructions on the back anymore? They always clearly state this. Or do they not state that in every country?
Reading it and paying attention to it are two very different things. And the fact that one cleaning products cleans, so two cleaning products will clean twice as well.
Load More Replies...My brother-in-law works at a Jersey Mikes and gets chemical burns even though he wears gloves when he cleans dishes.
Biggest two not to mix ammonia and bleach. That doesn't mean it is safe to mix others.
Combining cleaning products was also a popular answer. It might seem that the more products you put together, the better clean you'll get. However, some mixes can result in seriously toxic substances. Mixing bleach and vinegar or hydrogen peroxide and vinegar can result in the formation of toxic gasses. They can be harmful if inhaled and irritate the skin and eyes. You should also never mix bleach with ammonia – the gasses this produces can be lethal. Bleach, in general, should only be mixed with plain water.
Another group of products that can be harmful if mixed are drain cleaners. Maryann Amirshahi, PharmD, MD, MPH, PhD, FACMT, FACEP, FASAM, FCP, co-medical director of the National Capital Poison Center, told Martha Stewart that it’s because some contain acids and others contain bases. "Mixing acids and bases can cause a chemical reaction that generates heat, which can cause thermal burns. It may also release toxic gasses depending on the product involved."
Not sleeping. That s**t will ruin your mental state AND just ruin your overall functioning body.

Lack of sleep causes my brain to go into a weird waking/sleeping state of mind. Similar to sleep walking. I've fallen "asleep" standing up (I didn't stay standing very long), walked into walls, mirrors (yes it broke and knocked me out). I've fallen and put my head and shoulder through a solid wood cabinet door. Cooked (burned) driven (that was scary bad!), online shop (wondering a week later who sent me a gift), I'll begin counting, rearranging and/or sorting things like Himalayan rock salt (by color and size) screws, nuts, bolts (measure the length, diameter and type of head) cabinets (remove everything from every cabinet) I won't go to bed and will turn into a 110lb. 2 year old fighting tooth and nail to not go to bed! I've been physically placed in bed, covers tightly tucked around me. Giving them the opportunity to stop me from getting up again! Eventually I fall asleep and other than using the bathroom will sleep uninterrupted from 2 to 4 days!
I suffer from moderate to severe insomnia and one night a few years back sleep was just not on the menu for me. I had started reading The Stand by Stephen King a day or so prior so I ended up reading a decent portion of it all thru that night... Y'all. It was akin to popping acid and watching a horror movie. (I think that's a good analogy. I've only ever tried acid once in my life so I'm not exactly an expert. I highly appreciate anyone of you either correcting or confirming 🖤🤘🏻)

Visiting the wrong doctor. The general public will never know what makes a good doctor and what makes a bad one. The standard of care you get from one hospital to the next can be life changing...
yep I always tell someone to get a second opinion if they get offered surgery.
And if the two opinions don't agree, get a third one. Someone close to me recently died precisely because she didn't do this.

my doctor is so bad, I want to switch, but many doctors don't accept new patients
I had a doctor prescribe me pills without checking if they were okay to take with my other prescriptions. The next day I had a seizure while driving and went into someone's fence. I'm so lucky nobody got hurt that day. I learned that day to ALWAYS get a second opinion!
I got hit by a dodge ram 1500 while walking home. I could still move. It still took over a year for a nurse to tell me I had a fractured vertebrae. The E.R. doctor that night wanted to be right not a good doctor. My regular doctors didn't think it was a problem. Thank you medicaid. It still took me 3 months to get approved for the surgery. And because I was an adult medicaid patient I was not allowed to get a second opinion. Fun right. Ɓy the time I got the surgery it took 5hrs to try to get somewhat normal spine.
Oh yes! I could write a book about specialists who couldn't find my problem and removed my gallbladder when it wasn't necessary. Finally got a proper diagnosis from a nurse practitioner. I love nurse practitioners; they don't often have God complexes. This was also during early Covid. If one didn't have it, and no one could find a cause why you were sick, you were shifted to the end of the line. I could have died.
An ER doctor recently missed a blood clot in my leg, leaving me to walk around with it for a week before I went to a different hospital. I’m very lucky it didn’t break off and go to my lungs. With my symptoms and recent surgical history, a blood clot should have been the first thing the doctor looked for.
Tooth infections.
Think of how close your mouth is to your brain. Infection can travel between the two so quickly.
A close family friend died from exactly that. He was scared of the dentist and ignored it.
Load More Replies...My brother ended up having open heart surgery after a dental visit. i have a relative that has avoided dentists for most of her life. of course, it has lead to tooth loss but also infections. as she has gotten older her health has declined in ways that i truly believe are related to her neglect, especially her heart issues. it's so sad that her fear of dentists has led her to this point.
Still don't understand why (in the backwards US) dental insurance is separate from other health insurance.
In the Netherlands it is too 😭 surgery is in basic health insurance but regular appointments are not 😔

Load More Replies...A surprising entry for some in this list might be sunburns. Hardly anyone hasn't had a sunburn in their lives: it hurts, it peels, and it just isn't a pleasant experience generally. But it's not just that your skin got a little too hot from being in the sun too long. As the Skin Cancer Foundation explains, "Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage."
The skin peeling means that your body is trying to get rid of the damaged skin cells. But sometimes, it might just be too much – every sunburn raises your risk for skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation claims that even one blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles the chances of developing melanoma later in life. To avoid this, the best bets are covering up, staying in the shade, avoiding tanning beds, and investing in a good sunscreen.

Driving while distracted.
I'm willing to die on this hill. Texting while driving should have the same penalty as DUI.
Last night we were on our way to get our rescue cat from our granddaughter's. We had also adopted a rescue cat for her since she wanted one. We thought maybe they could get along, if introduced properly. Anyway, it wasn't happening so we went to pick our cat up. The dude driving in front of us HAD HIS DAMN CELL PHONE STUCK TO THE WINDSHIELD right in front of him, so he could NOT see ANYTHING ELSE but his phone. He was everywhere on the road except his lane. Too bad we don't want cops on the road anymore, eh?
This. I was sitting at a light and was rear-ended by a car "driven" by a woman texting- hit full speed, Never touched her brakes. My car saved my life.
You know how the basic answer is "social media"?
Well, I'd like to up that.
A dangerous thing people get into so casually everyday is arguing with randoms.
It gets addictive, seeing notifs, seeing upvotes or "likes," and reposts.
Pretty soon, you start postponing work because you have to correct someone or you have to reply asap.
You lose sleep, you wake up frustrated, you randomly lash out on your loved ones, maybe even your pet.
You develop anger and attention problems.
I quit Twitter over a year ago, and I cannot overstate how much it has improved my life. Every word of the above is an apt and ignoble description of how I conducted myself when I was deep into it. It is so, so polarizing. It gives a skewed perception of threats and deals almost exclusively in superlatives and their opposites; everything is the best, the worst, and right now. You and people like you are the last bastion against evil, and the "other side" is dehumanized and demonized. I became an anxious, hateful shell of a man, desperate for "likes" and ready to fight.
That sounds really awful and I'm glad you found some clarity about the situation.
Load More Replies...And one person misunderstanding something can send things into a wild tailspin that can last for days at least where people get so riled up that people get doxxed, they get threatened... One of the things I see a lot of is people wiggling their foot over the line, saying 'I didn't /threaten/ you by saying I have a gun'... Things like that. Factions form. And you never know what mental state the people on the other side are on, what they're capable of...
Thus should be waaaayyy higher. I firmly believe that this is the cause of at least half the problems the world is facing right now. Growing up before social media we were aware that most of the world was unaware of our existence, and we were okay with that. While like most teens we occasionally dreamed of worldwide fame or relevance we generally went for the more sustainable community relevance in our actions. We were also far more independent in our thoughts and opinions without all the judgement of random online strangers. Today people are obsessed with global acknowledgement and the unsustainable global relevance. (Everyone one must know my name and be impacted by my existence for me to feel important.) They seek for relevance in the one place they are guaranteed not to find it. This has led to a massive mental health problem.
Wrong way to think, maybe? You don't have to. You want to. Put it aside the way you do with ads you ignore.
When there is someone in your life who behaves in a sexually intimidating manner, or who can't stop from making sexual comments about you, tell someone! Decide who you can trust with this information and tell them *every time it happens.* Make notes about it, too, with dates and witnesses. MOST IMPORTANT: **Don't go anywhere with them alone!** That is when they will attempt to r*pe you. People like to think these sexual comments aren't dangerous, but they truly are. "Just ignore him," isn't good enough because they do this to get you to let your guard down. It's how they groom their victims so that you're so used to the vile comments that you stop regarding the person as potentially dangerous. "That's just how he is," is not an acceptable excuse for sexually denigrating somebody. Maybe the person is just a jerk, but you can't tell by how they look. R*pe victims say, "He suddenly became a very different, very aggressive person and then he attacked me. I never believed he would do anything like this!" Trust your own instincts! If someone makes you uncomfortable, pay attention and never, ever, go anywhere alone with them. Ever!
You can also take screen shots of every conversation, social media post, and picture they send you that's inappropriate. Put them all in a file and save them as evidence in case you need help from police or a restraining order. Unfortunately I learned this one from personal experience.
And a codicil. Women shouldn't be fielding this nonsense on their own. Women do not cause this problem. We need to get men to police their own, get men to take this seriously. The cause of a rape is the rapist, not the woman. We need to start acting like it instead of leaving it to women to fix.
very good advice. i would add that this should not be limited to just men but women as well. while a man can sexually assault a woman and it is important to realize that there are women who act sexually aggressive and can rape a man. just like it took years for the judicial system to realize that a raped woman can have an orgasm because it is a biological response, men are also subject to such uncontrollable responses. worse yet, if a man is not reciprocal to the woman she may decide to just accuse the man of attempted assault.
Yeah, I have one of my mom's friends who acts like this, but he's a teen, so it's hard to tell..
At the beach, riptide, if you don't spot them and don't know how to get out of one, it can be terrifying and deadly.
Swim parallel to the beach towards the breaking waves until you escape from the outgoing current, then swim on an angle to shore. This is publicised a lot in Australia
On Bondi Beach they encourage you to just float because the rip current always goes in a circle and will eventually take you back in.
Load More Replies...Relax. Let the current push you out, don't fight it. It will soon become calm and then you can swim parallel to the beach for a bit, then swim back to shore.
And do not go into the sea if you can't swim. Here the sea often looks very flat in the summer but a current can occur any time. When you are deeper in the water then your waist you must be a good swimmer! Every year especially tourists, die because of this. Locals all learn to swim at a very young age..
South Carolina (where I currently live) is under a riptide advisory right now.
Quading or 4-wheeling. It's not uncommon in my area for some feller and his friends to take these vehicles through some forest or some s**t, only to end up overturning them and causing one of them to have a brain injury so bad the docs have to ask the family their thoughts on organ donation.
May I add snowmobiles? The speeds those things are capable of now is nuts, Yes they are far better handling wise, but 80mph is still 80mph. That tree still won't move out of your way.
A million times yes. I was in a quadding accident 20 years ago. I was driving it for work so I wasn’t messing around. I dislocated my ankle and broke my leg. And that was from jumping off when the quad was going to tip, not from being pinned or anything. My ankle will never be quite the same - I was REALLY lucky though because I mostly recovered and it doesn’t affect my mobility anymore.
One of my classmates in high school lost her little brother in one of these accidents. He was only ten. Now my sons wonder why I was adamant that they not ride around on these things.
The main issue is no roll-bar, so you can end up underneath one, at any speed.
Yes I know someone in my neighborhood who lets her 14 and 8 year old daughter ride around in the forest on a four wheeler. Don't do that

Big crowd of people.
Check emergency exits in places you are. Won't probably safe you in a panicking crowd, but still, for other places.
Also, check for exits other than the main entrance. In an emergency, most people will head out the way they came in. Alternate exits will have less traffic.
Load More Replies...There is a documentary film called "Crush" about the tragic 2022 crowd crush in South Korea that left more than 150 people dead. Scary stuff.
Panicking crowd try to work your way to the moving crowd along walls. That's what I read. Always, always be aware of what is around you.
I was on a demonstration after a decade without one. I constantly checked the crowd for movement and idiots. I Don't like big concerts either.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoanut_Grove_fire . Deadliest nightclub fire in US history. Flammable decor, overcrowding, locked exit doors, and the only exit most patrons were aware of was the revolving door at the entrance. 492 died.
This could be shortened to simply 'people'. People are inherently dangerous. Avoid them every opportunity possible. A synonym for 'Big crowd of people' is 'mob' or 'government' which is an extremely dangerous critical mass of that inherently dangerous entity called 'people' and has undoubtedly caused more death, mayhem and destruction than anything since the Chicxulub impact.
Garage door springs.
I worked with a fellow who had his face torn off whilst trying to adjust a garage door - call a professional guys!
We had issues with our garage door last summer and I called a professional so my husband didn't have to mess with it more than needed. The poor repairman called me out to the garage and was sweating bullets because the idiots who built our house (and every house on the street) used a spring designed for an EIGHTEEN foot door instead of an EIGHT foot door. He was genuinely surprised it hadn't harmed us or destroyed our vehicles.
Driving. Youre literally flying down the road at speeds that would kill you if you got hit in a gigantic hunk of gasoline filled metal.
People dont take safety on the road nearly seriously enough.
This is why signaling is so important. These "gigantic hunks of gasoline filled metal" basically have two ways to communicate, break lights and signals.
This is why I don't drive. Not every human being is meant to drive. In fact, with the accident stats being what they are, maybe NO human being is truly meant to drive!
I think anyone who's texting behind the wheel, or driving while intoxicated should get their license removed for a year, and if it happens twice they get to go to prison or lose their license for life. A car is a 1000 kilo murder weapon that should only be used while paying good attention. You don't have the right to be reckless and endanger other people's lives.
You have to remember opposite traffic is moving towards you as fast as you are moving toward them. So on the highway you strap yourself into chunks of metal moving towards each other at 130 MPH and missing each other by feet.
I lost two sets of aunt and uncles in a car crash. The only consolation is that they died together.
Use your signals. And don't suddenly change lanes unless absolutely necessary.
When you are in the car, you don't feel how fast you are going and when you are outside it feels like you are zooming past even if you're going like 25mph. This got someone very mad at me because they scared the crud out of me as they zoomed past.
Bull: if it was that dangerous bikers would be dead from being exposed to the speed. I presume it’s just badly worded and they mean in a crash - remember kids speed doesn’t kill you it’s the sudden stop! 30mph on ice on a 70mph road can be way more lethal than 70 on a 60 limit road in good conditions!
I think most folks are afraid they'll break their arm if they have to hit that little switch arm!!!
Escalators. The torque produced to lift dozens of people and their luggage will not stop for your limbs. Watch your kids, carry your pets, don't be distracted. There are emergency stop buttons at the top and bottom, if you see a problem such as a person falling or loose metal or glass, use the button. Better delayed than traumatized, maimed, or dead.
Places that don't have those emergency buttons have pretty regular deaths. Safety regulations may seem annoying, but they save lives
Isn't there a saying like "safety regulations are written in blood"? Or something like that?
Load More Replies...Fun secret. If you kick the side wall of an escalator hard enough, it will shut off. They have safety sensors in them for that purpose. So if you can't reach the button, just start kicking the s**t out of the lower metal walls and it should deactivate.
A family friend of my nanna lost her husband due to an escalator incident in the 80s. He was an engineer carrying out an inspection, and something went wrong, and the stairs began moving. He was partially decapitated as a result and died instantly. This was a long time ago, I was a very young child (around 5/6) when we were told of her husbands death and it wasnt for another 10 years until we found out how he died. The full details are pretty horrific.
The train station escalators in Switzerland are disconnected from the electricity when fixed because of that.

Cheaping out on tires for your vehicle.
Never cheap out on things that come between you and the ground. That includes shoes, mattresses, and tires.

Breaks have them checked and changed as needed. I drove in the rain in a minivan my EX never maintained. I had to cut sharp into oncoming traffic to get it into a parking lot that was empty because the breaks were gone. Just drum against drum.
When I first started driving I got out of school and discovered a huge bulge on the side of my tire. I was bent over poking at it when I was grabbed from behind and thrust away from the tire and asked, "Are you" F'ing crazy? That tire blows it's going to either kill or maim you!" I was gobsmacked, but at 60 years old I still remember the lesson!
Caveat is if you can't afford to right now get super cheap and save money immediately to buy better ones I've bought used tires to get by till I could replace all my tires I also drove slower and more careful in everyway just to make sure I made it home and to work until I had the money
Tires also expire. There's a date code on them for this reason. 4-5 years is normal. It should be part of your inspection of a used car purchase, and an easy way to drop the price. If the seller won't move on price walk away.
5 years is excessive assuming good condition - up to 10 years is the recommended by Michelin for example. https://www.michelin.co.uk/auto/advice/change-tyres/check-tyre-tread#:~:text=As%20a%20precautionary%20measure%2C%20even,date%20in%20the%20DOT%20marking.

Definitely alcohol.
Nurse here-most people don't realize the damage even 2 drinks a day does to your mind/body. I've seen so many patients in their early 40s with liver disease. It can be a silent killer and many don't realize how bad it is until it's pretty far gone.
We have now normalized wine mom behavior and it has dramatically increased the number of women who have liver disease, DUI's and don't even mention the calories!! Seriously, we need to stop making alcohol the life of every get together and resolution to stress, bad day etc. Smoke a bowl-zero calories and rarely causes health problems.
Except the ensuing munchies I have result in many calories :)

Going through addiction, I wanted to stop for years. And for years, I was warned about how stopping abruptly would kill me. As I was at a point of extreme suffering, I recall lying there...twitching, shaking, heaving...and ruefully muttering, 'This'd've been easier if I had gotten addicted to heroin.' 'Cause that was just me trying to taper off, and that was a mere twelve hours after my last drink... And the tapering schedule was months more to go. Ended up having to go to a facility--and not a nice one--to dry out and be monitored. Even that was touch'n'go. (Also caught COVID and had to be quarantined. That was fun. Being alone in a dark room with the sweats, small seizures, hallucinations... No contact with anyone except three minutes every so often where they took my vitals and gave me meds.) Yeah. No one told me how hard it would rewire me.

There is not one major organ it doesn't harm; truly one of the worst things you can put in your body. That being said, I drink but rarely.
But please tell me why we can't have a flower that no one has ever OD'ed on.
Facts. Some of the most horrifying deaths I've seen were related to alcohol abuse. Look up esophageal varices.
I had a patient who died from one. It was horrible. My ex husband has completely and utterly ruined his life with alcohol. Cirrhosis, colon ca, Barrett's esoph and that doesn't even address the effects on the four brain cells he was born with.

There are always exceptions. My wife's grandpa was a heavy smoker and drinker for decades (and worked for decades at a chemical fertilizer plant). He lived well into his 80s with no major health problems. Just died one day. It was so sudden that the coroner actually wanted to investigate for any "foul play". OTOH, she had an uncle who lived clean and healthy who died in his early 50s after a mild viral infection. Got into his heart somehow, and that was that.

- Being in a relationship with a narcissist
- Being in a relationship where you're constantly being gaslighted
These make even the strongest and most confident people develop self esteem issues and doubt everything they say or do.
The problem with narcissists is they will never seek mental health treatment. They think they’re perfect and don’t need help and no amount of begging, pleading, or threatening to leave will change their minds.
If your life begun with having narcissistic people raising you, you don't stand a chance, unless you actually have someone in your life who goes above and beyond to help you! 1. What you don't know CAN hurt you. 2. What doesn't kill you quickly is playing the long game...it has buried itself deep inside you and is affecting your decision making, self esteem and how badly you will accept others treating you, etc, and it affects your ability to grow emotionally and mentally.
I had an abusive step-dad like this once, so I can totally feel this one.
This is very real and unless you've had someone do it to you, you really can't understand what it's like. It's torture of the mind and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. Maybe lay off the judgement and offer up some understanding for people that have experienced this.
Do these words really mean anything any more? Too many people on social media using them for anyone who expects anything from them or disagrees with them.
I feel so attacked by your comment. I have PTSD from people on this site being so mean! Stop gaslighting me!

Falling/knocking people over. hit your head at just the right angle and spot and boom dead.
Also, if you faint and boop your head, go to the hospital afterwards even if you feel fine.

Definitely go to a hospital if you lost even a few seconds. And concussion headaches are ones that just keep getting worse.

Riding Electric scooters. I see people zipping around my city everyday easily pushing 25-30mph with no helmet, no pads, no gloves, wearing flipflops or slipon nothing shoes. People apparently don't realize how badly knees, elbows, hands, feet, and heads get f****d up hitting pavement going that fast.
If there's any chance of hitting pavement at speed gear up. It takes split seconds of contact to cause 2nd and 3rd degree road rash. And do not get on the back unless you know for fact you're with a good rider. And any rider that let's you on the back without gear, big red flag. And FFS women, do not get on with any guy that "here, just use my helmet..." please.
I'm sure people walking around in cities know how dangerous they are. In San Francisco, we have idiots riding them on the sidewalk. Combined, the rider and scooter weigh close to or over 200 pounds traveling at a high rate of speed. They have no regard of pedestrians, invalids, children, babies, dogs or even anyone other than themselves. And yes, they have run over people and then get back on their scooter and take off. Meanwhile their victims go to the hospital. There is no deterrence in place to stop them. Yet
E Scooter rider here since 2021 and I 100% agree with this post. From the moment I bought my first scooter I also bought gear: Full Face Smart helmet with recording device, Impact riding gloves, metal knee pads, metal elbow pads and a motorcycle jacket with padding on the back, shoulders, and elbows. I NEVER ride without my gear no matter how long or short the ride is. I respect other drivers/riders, and ride at the posted speed limit while ALWAYS being alert. Those who don't even wear at least a helmet drive me up the walls but the absolute WORST is the idiots who ride with their partner, friend, or worse child!!! These have weight limits for a reason, and its hard enough to steer with yourself on it let alone someone else.
And the ones that zip by alleys very brave assuming no one is coming out of an alley.
I can't remember where, but they recently made it easier for the scooters and accidents have gone up dramatically.

Dull kitchen knives.
I know everyone says dull knives are more dangerous but I've only ever cut myself with sharp knives. I know its anecdotal, but that's just my experience!
I've had far worse injuries with duller knives than sharp. Not least because I'm more careful around my mandolin and sharper knives and have more respect for them, but also my duller knives had to be used with a lot more force behind them.
True! I have a bunch of different Damascus steel knives and I cut everything with them. Never cut myself! My mother has a dull vegetable knife. Cut myself with it trying to slice a tomato.
Damascus is so awesome but uuugh sharpening it evenly is so annoying. The dark bits get nicked so much more easily.
Load More Replies...For me it's just knives - I manage to cut myself most of the times I'm using anything above a butter knife. Chopping veg is a nightmare.
or dangerous at all? They might give you small cuts, but are they really that dangerous?
Load More Replies...First stitches trying to cut an apple with a dull knife. Always curve your fingers away from knife.
It is not whether the knife is sharp or dull, it is if you are careful with the knife. Careless people always blame their accidents on everything but themselves.
The biggest danger comes while trying to kill someone. When the knife is duller, it takes longer, giving the target more opportunity to hurt you while defending against your efforts. That's been proven by many many movies and TV crime shows. And even if they're fictional, they certainly wouldn't lie to us. That would be wrong. Right?
There’s a newish trend among wood workers called Fractal Burning or Lichtenberg burning where you use electricity to create this cool lightning like burns across wood. Problem is, it’s extremely dangerous. There has already been at least one person who died trying to do it (probably more but I only remember hearing of one specifically) . There’s a ton of videos of every day people doing this, but if you slip up just slightly, you’re gonna electrocute yourself.
This is so dangerous. My niece had been doing this for several years before she got a little too careless. Thankfully she survived, but she lost 3 fingers and part of her hand where the electricity exited her body and she has severe nerve damage.
I'm glad she survived, but those scars definitely aren't gonna fade. I hope she's able to continue living her life, but hopefully she's also more cautious. I wish the best for her.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. You may have a kill switch to turn off the battery but that doesn’t guarantee the wood you’re burning isn’t going to explode into flames. I use a high watt CO2 laser and give it massive respect because I’m literally playing with fire. I have fire prevention hooked up and never walk more than five steps away when it’s burning. I also have a fire extinguisher next to my work station. I hope fractal burning is a fad that fades soon.
High Speed R.C.Boats can rip you anew one too.Gas powered ones(Nitrox powered) are as dangerous as Fractal Burning, with no discernible results except maybe missing a finger or two!
People not knowing that “inflammable” means “really extremely f*****g flammable” and not “not flammable”.
"Inflammable" and "flammable" mean the same thing. WTH english language??? 😒
latin actually. inflamare = to enflame. flammare = to burst into flame. basically the same thing.
Load More Replies...Flammable means it needs a flame to ignite it, inflammable means it can ignite on its own.
The (in) inflammable is a prefix which changes the meaning of the word. Second grade grammar. I homeschooled my grandson.
OP has it exactly correct! The terms are very different. Inflammable means, "This c**p can blow up at any time, keep all flames & sparks away!" Flammable just means stuff like wood or cotton, "Hey, put a match to this and, if you're lucky, it may catch fire".
For practical purposes it's the same thing but the meanings are slightly different. Flammable means you can set fire to it, whereas inflammable means it can burst into flames on its own in the right conditions.
Why do so many think inflammable and flammable don't mean the exact same thing (as every dictionary I've checked says)? Is this some specialized industrial subdefinition (say petrochemicals?) or something invented by school teachers?

Mountains, specifically going hiking in the mountains.
I recently climbed Snowdon (in Wales) and there were hundreds of people up there who were clearly inexperienced. People don't realise how quickly a fun hike can turn into someone's death.
Yes, people really underestimate how dangerous it can get on mountains even in the UK. We were climbing Ben Nevis and saw someone wearing flip flops, shorts and carrying an umbrella. Fortunately he was on the way down but he was lucky. The weather can change in a second and conditions at the bottom can be completely different to those at the top.
Wear sensible shoes. Tell someone where you're hiking and when you'll return. Be prepared to spend the night if lost because no one is coming to look for you until the next morning.
Moves to Colorado a year ago and learned that I need to carry a backpack with me with supplies for even a shorter hike. Layers, sun protection, water, first aid kit, flashlight, bear spray, and a fully charged phone.

Someone was rescued the other day while climbing a flatiron here in Boulder, CO with their cat. Not nice to the cat.
Every year people, both tourists and locals, fall off the trails in Switzerland and down the mountains because they aren't careful enough. When hiking always wear good shoes/ hiking boots. Being plenty of water, sturdy clothes, and a first aid kit. Whistles, compasses, a mirror, and a Swiss pocket knife are all also useful tools. A few snacks like granola bars aren't a bad idea either.
Yes. Pack extra clothes. Some food and water. 1st aid kit. It might be annoying, but if you need it, you have it.

Water - current and waterfalls are to two that kill people all the time. Even a gentle looking river can be very deceptive if there’s enough water moving along — people, cars, etc. Rip currents at the beach. Flash floods. Water seems gentle, but it’s gives zero f@cks about anything in its path.

If you knock someone out you have already done them brain damage and there's no such thing as a 'safe' level. Hit someone in the head and you've got a fair chance of being charged with murder or manslaughter.
You can actually kill someone by punching them in the face if the nose breaks in a specific angle, causing the bone behind the cartilage to be shot back through the skull into the brain. However, this is very unlikely, same as causing a bleed in the brain through a punch. Otherwise all boxers would be dead.

Bites. From both animals and humans. "Oh it's just a spider bite, it can't do me much." I realised a week after that sentence that it can indeed do me much. I spent two weeks with a slightly inflated, red and irritating arm. There's also rabbies, blood-transmitted diseases and bloodborn pathogens. And people often don't realise the jaw is the strongest muscle on the human body. I tried to bite someone's ear out of rage and almost ripped it off his head. There's a bunch of reports of assaults where someone got bitten and there was serious damage done by a simple bite. My favorite example is a thief trying to steal someone's bike and the bike owner started fighting the thief. It ended up by the owner biting the man's fingers and bitting off two of his fingers and ripping his skin all along the other fingers of this same hand.
Humans actually have one of the worst bites of all, even worse than some venomous animals, because we have so much bacteria in our mouths that the bite wounds we cause will get badly infected. Plus, due to the flat teeth we cause squash wounds that heal far worse than pierce wounds as a pointy teeth animal would do, or cuts. Regarding human strength, you can technically bite a finger off like a carrot, but your brain doesn't allow you to do it. You can technically also rip someone's ears and nose off, they don't hold on as strong as you'd think they do, but you certainly can't pry half a head off just like that.
Cat bites, even from indoor domestic pets, will _always_ get infected unless you're a) very quick and efficient with topical antiseptic or b) very lucky. Plan your hospital visit as soon as you're bitten, thoroughly disinfect and keep watching for any signs of increased redness or inflammation. Darker colours, especially if the move up the arm, should be treated as a genuine medical emergency, if you don't get to a hospital you will die, sort of severity.
Years ago, my dad got bitten by a brown recluse spider. Trust me, you DON'T want to get bitten by a brown recluse. At best, you'll get a painful blister or ulcer that last about a week. At worst.... necrosis, requiring surgery and skin grafts.

Fragranced Products are toxic. vention. Data were collected in June 2016 using an on-line survey with a representative national sample (n = 1098). Overall, 33% of Australians report health problems, such as migraine headaches and asthma attacks, when exposed to fragranced products. Of these health effects, more than half (17.1%) could be considered disabling under the Australian Disability Discrimination Act. Additionally, 7.7% of Australians have lost workdays or a job due to illness from fragranced product exposure in the workplace, 16.4% reported health problems when exposed to air fresheners or deodorizers, 15.3% from being in a room after it was cleaned with scented products, and 16.7% would enter but then leave a business as quickly as possible due to fragranced products. About twice as many respondents would prefer that workplaces, health care facilities and professionals, hotels, and airplanes were fragrance-free rather than fragranced. While 73.7% were not aware that fragranced products, even ones called green and organic, emitted hazardous air pollutants, 56.3% would not continue to use a product if they knew it did. This is the first study in Australia to assess the extent of adverse effects associated with exposure to common fragranced products. It provides compelling evidence for the importance and value of reducing fragranced product exposure in order to reduce and prevent adverse health effects and costs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5122698/#:~:text=One%2Dthird%20of%20the%20Australian,health%20effects%20from%20fragranced%20products.&text=Common%20effects%20include%20respiratory%20problems%2C%20migraine%20headaches%2C%20and%20asthma%20attacks.&text=Fragranced%20products%20resulted%20in%20lost,and%20restricted%20access%20in%20society.

As someone who really loves motorcycles, I'm hurt that they weren't on here
Thanks for letting me know that my dear of heights and deep water is rational (edit: and things like kelp & the ocean)
Deer, just your normal whitetail deer. They'll come out of nowhere at night, causing you to either swerve and lose control or hit it and wreck your car. During rut season the bucks can get hyper-aggressive and territorial. Those horns aren't just for show.
This started out OK but got real weird toward the end, like there weren't enough entries for the list so someone just threw in an extra handful of questionable ones to round out the list.
I think there should be a limit of 25 to 30 entries per list to keep the content of good quality.
Pretty sure that's why the articles start out with something like 70 items but get pruned to the top 30 most times. Just read them a week after they're posted, they'll be pruned by that point.

Except that, sadly, common sense, like common courtesy and common decency, is endangered and fast becoming extinct.
