Asbestosis was discovered before 1900. In 1900 Great Britain officially accepted it as an existing condition. In Germany, the first published fatal case was in 1907. There it became a registered work-related disease for anyone handling asbestos in his job by 1936. So it was absolutely known to be harmful by the 1930s. It wasn't proven that it caused cancer up to that point, but suspected.

What you are citing is the constantly repeated sentence "The first medical article on the hazards of asbestos dust appeared in the British Medical Journal..." And that is wrong. This was the first fully documented and published case of someone dying from asbestosis. Not the first known case, not the first published case and not the discovery. It was the final proof. pollution and waste is a different topic, but one that I agree deserves attention! i've recently focused on eliminating my plastic waste - made the switch for deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo and cond, dish soap and laundry soap. tried starting a topic here on BP on Earth day so we could all share ideas but it never got traction. what things have you tried / tips you have for reducing plastic, crochet lady?

But we know those protections don't always work. We know for a fact that there are microscopic particles of plastic in our drinking water because makeup companies were allowed to use them as fillers and for sloughing off dead skin. Apparentlh no one realized the little beads kept wearing away until they were so microscopic they were getting through all our filters. So if you think we don't drink and inhale bad crap everyday you're delusional. That's just one example.

John C: reduce plastic wherever possible. Use re-usable bags instead of cheap one-time-use bags, use glass instead of plastic (if feasable), use alternatives to plastic-straws (in EU, plastic-straws are banned and evn at McDonalds you get a paper-straw now) ... If you have to wash fleece-clothes, use a 'guppyfriend" or something similar (https://en.guppyfriend.com/products/guppyfriend-waschbeutel-kaufen) Don't throw your cigarette-butts on the ground, use natural fibres instead of plastic and poly-whatever in clothes when possible, (Wool is great), see if you can find certified eco-friendly produced clothes, buy LESS clothes and use as long as possible (also saves money). Also, pick up (clean) litter when outside walking and throw it in the trash-can. Small things, but they might help

When considering the whole life cycle of the bag and materials (including manufacture, shipping, use, disposal and breakdown) the choice is not obvious or intuitive - the single one-time-use bags do indeed have their place once you understand the big picture - don't automatically discount them.
