I do not understand nor will I ever understand how anyone can disrespect another human being simply because of the color of their skin. This man deserved to receive a medal presented to him by the President of the United States at a ceremony attended by the survivors and their families.

In The 1940s And 50s, Canada Ran Secret Nutrition Experiments On 1300 Indigenous People, Including 1000 Children, In Residential Schools

Black and white photo of children and nuns outside a building, illustrating unsettling history and crime stories.

Kids were starved, denied care, forced to eat vomit. Some died, rotting from the inside, as researchers recorded their suffering.

In the 1940s and 50s, Canada secretly ran nutrition experiments on Indigenous people, mostly kids trapped in residential schools. Around 1,300 people, including 1,000 children, were used as human lab rats without consent.

Researchers led by government officials and famous doctors like Frederick Tisdall deliberately kept already starving children malnourished. They withheld dental care and medical treatment just to see how bad things would get. Some kids were given vitamin supplements; others were left to suffer without help.

Survivors later described brutal punishments, including being forced to eat their own vomit. Some children died slowly from hunger and neglect while researchers recorded the results.

These experiments happened in schools like Alberni, Shubenacadie, and St. Mary’s, and in remote Indigenous communities. Most victims never knew they were part of a study. Their suffering was written up in scientific papers.

The Canadian government kept it hidden for decades. It only came to light in 2013 when historian Ian Mosby exposed it. It’s one of the darkest chapters of Canada's history.

Brian Droste: here in the UK, the safety of the US-supplied medical blood product Factor VIII was tested on children - because running a trial on unsuspecting kids was cheaper than using chimps (yes, that really was the reason put forward by the man who made the decision). This was in the 1970s and 1980s. From 2018: "4,689 haemophiliacs became infected with hepatitis C and HIV after they were treated with contaminated blood products supplied by the NHS. Of those infected, 2,883 have since died." Link follows (there's been stuff about it much more recently, but for some reason I've failed to find it just now).

In Oregon they used children in foster care for druug testing. This was as recent as 2000 because my friend was awarded hush money when he found out about all the unessisary and physilogically changing hormones they put him on to test their effects (same ones my SIL fed my Nephew for a few years as a teenager in Oregon to turn him into a girl before nephew realized they were useless and dangerous and instead of a V****a all he got was fat buildup in b***s like my friend). His foster parents got paid to use him for experimentation.

In New Zealand small towns were used as a dentistry play ground for practice of procedures and up and coming dentistry. I know of two people who as children under the age of 10, basically had their healthy growing teeth drilled, pulled, filled, and practiced on to the point where as adults they had horrendous teeth filled with fillings. It was done as 'practice', not because of actual need. They were handed over by schools, probably under the guise of 'free health/dental care' through school.

Many of the grim stories you’re reading are likely a byproduct of the dark triad personality. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, it’s a psychological theory formulated in 2002 by researchers Delroy L. Paulhus and Kevin Williams.

The theory suggests three distinct yet overlapping traits that explain specific negative behaviors. These three traits are Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism.

Not just "a local election." The whole f*****g state of Tennessee. Stolen by an FDR croney. Eastern Tennessee, however, had opposed slavery and secession and supported Lincoln's party every single election since it was founded, and was having none of the b******t. (Like West Virginia, East Tennessee was too mountainous to support plantations, but unlike WV, it was too far from the union to effectively control.)

Edward Hull "Boss" Crump Jr. A "machine politician" who utterly controlled Memphis politics from 1915 until 1954 and was hugely influential in statewide politics between 1928 and 1954. Not really an "FDR croney" though, although, as a Democrat, he did support the president.

it was a multi-day stand off with gun battles with corrupt police, and even the National Guard was sent in by the corrupt governor. The NRA is the reason why this story went main stream as they glorified the story (and even decades ago funded a movie about it) as the reason why citizens needed to be armed

Later, though, he proclaimed his respect for American Indians. He was also pro-women's rights. He led a very interesting life. As an aside - The American football team, the Buffalo Bills, was named after him, but he never lived in Buffalo, New York.

Narcissism is the most widely known trait on this list. It’s the type of behavior you will notice in the entitled people stories you’ve likely read on this site. By definition, this personality trait involves selfishness, a lack of empathy, and a need for admiration.

As explained by the Cleveland Clinic, anyone can have narcissistic tendencies. However, the behaviors are much worse in some people, warranting experts to diagnose them with a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).

The Cleveland Clinic also clarifies that while someone with a dark triad personality may have narcissistic inclinations, they may not necessarily fit an NPD diagnosis.

Lorrie Rothstein: because believing black people don't feel pain like "proper white folks" justifies enslaving them and treating them atrociously. The idea that black people don't feel pain the same as white folks is *still* prevalent in medicine here in the UK. It's one of the reasons black people get worse medical care here. On the bright side, at least some people have noticed the problem and are trying to do something about it.

Uumm it's called the workers party of korea, yes Korea most certainly is communist and yeah hey guess what communism usually involves a dictator, a real actual dictator not one people label as such.

Kitty Litter: communism is what you get when "the people" own and run everything collectively. If you've got a dictator, then what you've got isn't communism. Real communism's never been tried. The way North Korea works is that the Workers' Party of Korea exists to carry out the decisions of the central dictatorship. Real communism is genuinely democratic: North Korea is the opposite, along with all other states which have claimed to be communist.

Jeff Hunt: North Korea's not communist. It's a hereditary dictatorship being played as a páwn in global politics - half-hearted support from China, cut off by almost everyone else. Real communism's never been tried (not that I think communism would work - but it might be interesting to find out how it went, just so long as I'm not part of the experiment).

You’ve likely heard a person refer to someone as a psychopath. But in case you’re unsure of the definition, it’s a trait that points to the lack of empathy. The individual may also be bold and impulsive, and may display antisocial and criminal behavior.

In case you also confuse psychopathy with sociopathy, the main difference is that the former has genetic roots and brain differences, while the latter is often a result of environmental factors like childhood neglect.

On my Dad's side, we were Louisiana slaves. From Africa to Louisiana. We were owned by a French plantation owner who r***d a few of his slaves, which is where I got my French blood. The GOOD thing about being owned by this guy was he kind of educated his s***e offspring, so my relatives could read, write, & do basic math when the Civil war ended, which enabled us to get real employment. My rels later went to Texas, then to Kansas, then to Missouri. A couple of years ago, my brother, his daughter, my son, & I took Amtrak from Los Angeles to New Orleans: as soon as we crossed into Louisiana it felt WEIRD & this feeling was worse in New Orleans. I had never been to Louisiana prior to this & I'm not sure if I can even return because it was just too surreal.

Machiavellianism is a personality trait marked by cynicism, manipualtion and disregard for morality, all for the sake of self-interest, status, and power. It’s a concept stemming from the writings of 16th-century politician Niccolò Machiavelli and his infamous book “The Prince.”

Much like psychopathy, Machiavellianism involves the lack of emotion and empathy. However, it isn’t considered to be a mental disorder.

There Was A Disease That Left People Awake But Unable To Move Or Speak. Many Were Trapped Inside Their Own Bodies, And It Vanished Without Anyone Ever Understanding Why

Black and white photos of two unsettling historical crime figures, illustrating eerie stories people can't believe happened.

Between 1915 and 1926 a strange illness called Encephalitis Lethargica spread across the world. It left people awake but unable to move or speak, and entire families watched their loved ones slip into a state where they could see and hear everything but could not respond.

Some stayed trapped inside their bodies for years while others died within weeks. In all, more than half a million people were affected before the disease vanished as suddenly as it appeared, and no one ever figured out why.

The film "Awakenings" is based on doctor Oliver Sacks and his research on how to help some of these patients. As far as I know, the patients "fell asleep". They were not in coma, but they weren't awake either. The symptoms mentioned here (awake but unable to move or speak) describe locked-in syndrome. Do you want to feed your worse nightmares? Read "Ghost boy" by Martin Pistorius, about experiences as a locked-in patient.

It does still occur today, but is incredibly rare. They still don't know why it flared up the way it did but they think it was linked in some way to the 1918 flu pandemic, an opportunistic illness jumping on already suppressed immune systems.

Willard State Hospital in New York. Hospitals were often like this due to lack of funding and lack of caring from the general population, and not everyone who went there was there on "bogus grounds." There were no treatments for mental illness at the time, and the general public demanded that they were put "somewhere," but didn't want to pay for it, and the majority of "normal" people were repulsed by people with mental illnesses, so that's basically the fault of the general population. I feel bad for the doctors and staff who had hospitals full of people they didn't know what to do with and barely any money from the government or families, so they did what they had to. This is not an excuse but a description.

Howard Carter Opening The Shrines Enclosing The Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s Sarcophagus For The “First” Time In Over 3,000 Years, January 4th 1924

Two researchers examining ancient carved stone slabs, highlighting unsettling history and crime mysteries.

This image is likely a recreation for the camera. In reality, Howard Carter’s excavation of the boy pharaoh’s tomb was unorthodox, to say the least. Carter, his patron Lord Carnarvon, and Carnarvon’s daughter Lady Evelyn secretly entered the burial chamber before resealing the entrance to conceal their actions. Carter dismantled Tutankhamun’s mummy to remove it from the sarcophagus.

That said, the 50-year-old, self-trained Egyptologist was meticulous and, compared to many of his contemporaries, more respectful of ancient remains. Carter resigned from the Egyptian Antiquities Service after siding with Egyptian guards during a dispute with tourists. His careful documentation and methods ultimately preserved a remarkable amount of the tomb’s 3,000-year-old artifacts, many of which might otherwise have been damaged or lost.

They did in Australia too, though it was the white settlers they bred with, and they didn't marry them. The lighter they got, the more likely they were to be able to be adopted by white families. They were desperate to 'breed the black out of them'. This is why so many Aboriginal people have light skin, which confuses many non-indigenous people, who think they are just claiming to be Aboriginal to get special privileges.

This is referred to as bio sphere 2. They had some problems at first. I remember hearing that they had pump more oxygen into the sphere. There are five sections to the biosphere. Apparently the calculations on oxygen/CO2 circulation were off because the scientists wreren't aware that the cement used in the construction exudes a lot of CO2 while setting. For DECADES.

Circassions were a Caucuses minority group, and the survivors fled to the Ottoman Empire, as they were Muslim as well. They were spread out throughout the Ottoman Empire. Their culture was almost destroyed as the ones in Turkey were forcibly Turkicized and the ones in Syria and other Arab countries were forcibly arabicized by local Arab leaders. It was in the Galilee region where the last group to preserve their culture existed by siding with the Gallilean Jews in the 1800s and not the Arabs, choosing a minority group to ally with, over Islamic solidarity. Jews helped them preserve their culture. Today Israel is the only country in the Middle East that the Circassion flag is legal, and while they do exist in Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey, the only place the culture is preserved in Israel, where the govt gives them grants to protect it (and its led to a revival in other places, as the original culture still exists in Israel to copy).

In 1820s Kentucky, An Isolated Family Began Having Children Born Visibly Blue As A Rare Blood Disorder Spread Through A Tiny Gene Pool

Painting of an old family in front of a log cabin depicting unsettling history and crime involving disappearances.

In 1820, Martin Fugate and his wife, Elizabeth Smith, settled near Hazard, Kentucky, along Troublesome Creek. Both carried a rare recessive trait, and several of their children were born with striking blue skin.

The family stayed in an isolated area with a tiny local dating pool, and the gene kept circulating through marriages within the same small community, including between relatives. Over generations, more descendants were born with the same blue tint, and locals began calling them the “Blue People of Kentucky.”.

Not ridiculous, just racist and nasty: just one of the many methods used to prevent non-whites voting. This test was designed to be impossible to pass - and presumably, it was also nearly impossible for black people to acquire proof of a fifth grade education. "Circle the first, first letter of the alphabet in this line"; "In the first circle below write the last letter of the first word beginning with "L" "? Seriously? I've got two university degrees and I've no idea how to answer either of those questions.

Giraffe Sitter: I've read that the Great Auk was considered a bird of ill omen by many. Once it was down to a last breeding pair, the species didn't have much of a chance. 🤨 However, the main problem was: "By the mid-sixteenth century, the nesting colonies along the European side of the Atlantic were nearly all eliminated by humans k*****g this bird for its down, which was used to make pillows.[20]: 40  In 1553, the great auk received its first official protection. In 1794, Great Britain banned the k*****g of this species for its feathers.[18]: 330  In St. John's, those violating a 1775 law banning hunting the great auk for its feathers or eggs were publicly flogged, though hunting for use as fishing bait was still permitted."

    The Dancing Plague Of 1518

Historical black and white illustration of people in distress, depicting unsettling crime and history events.

The dancing plague of 1518, or dance epidemic of 1518 (French: Épidémie dansante de 1518; German: Straßburger Tanzwut), was a case of dancing mania that occurred in Strasbourg, Alsace (modern-day France), in the Holy Roman Empire from July 1518 to September 1518. Somewhere between 50 and 400 people took to dancing for weeks. There are many theories behind the phenomenon, the most popular being stress-induced mass hysteria, suggested by John Waller. Other theories include ergot poisoning.

From Wikipedia: Born into slavery in Edenton, North Carolina, she was s******y harassed by her enslaver. When he threatened to sell her children if she did not submit to his desire, she hid in a tiny crawl space under the roof of her grandmother's house, so low she could not stand up in it. After staying there for seven years, she finally managed to escape to the free North, where she was reunited with her children Joseph and Louisa Matilda and her brother John S. Jacobs. She found work as a nanny and got into contact with abolitionist and feminist reformers. Even in New York City, her freedom was in danger until her employer was able to pay off her legal owner. During and immediately after the American Civil War, she travelled to Union-occupied parts of the Confederate South together with her daughter, organizing help and founding two schools for fugitive and freed slaves.

It's a complicated and harrowing story, involving what we must probably call "harassment"so as to avoid prudish censorship, the sale of children, and so forth, which if you are actually curious you can look up (this is the internet, after all), since Jacobs became a well known voice for abolition. She escaped from slavery, of course.

These checks were every 30 minutes, according to the McCann's and the group of friends they were travelling with. As any parent will tell you, a lot can happen to a toddler in 30 minutes. The apartment wasn't visible from where the group were dining, and they wouldn't have heard the children either from where they were. Many people believe that Maddy may have died in the apartment and her parents covered it up. My theory is that Maddy woke up, felt scared when she saw her parents weren't in the apartment and went to look for them outside, and then she was taken by a predator.

On December 16, 1773, Bostonians Dumped 342 Chests Of Tea Into Boston Harbor

Crowd waving and cheering at a ship departing the harbor in a historic scene of unsettling history and crime.

On the night of December 16, 1773, 252 years ago, Boston stopped arguing and started acting. For weeks, the city had been locked in a standoff over the Tea Act, which allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonies while still enforcing Parliament’s right to tax it. To many colonists, this was a continuation of taxation without representation. Three tea ships sat idle in Boston Harbor, their cargo unwanted and legally unable to leave without paying the duty. Thousands of Bostonians packed into meetings at Faneuil Hall and the Old South Meeting House, debating, petitioning, and waiting for Governor Thomas Hutchinson to relent. He did not.

That evening, after Hutchinson again refused to let the ships depart, Samuel Adams reportedly declared that the meeting could do nothing more to save the country. Shortly after, men began filing out of the Old South Meeting House, not with a formal plan, but with a shared resolve. Somewhere between 30 and 130 men, many associated with the Sons of Liberty, some of whom disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians, a symbolic rejection of British identity. They moved quietly toward Griffin’s Wharf, where the ships were moored.

Over the course of roughly three hours, the men boarded the ships and systematically broke open and dumped 342 chests of tea into the cold, dark harbor, about 92,000 pounds in total. The ship crews did not interfere.

The reaction was swift and severe. In Britain, outrage was nearly universal, even among those sympathetic to colonial grievances. Parliament responded with the Coercive Acts, known in the colonies as the Intolerable Acts, closing Boston Harbor and stripping Massachusetts of key self-governing rights. Rather than isolating Boston, the punishment united the colonies.

...we are sorely due for another one, given the current 'king like' attitude of the current POTUS.

Yeah, only: it was a protest by tea smugglers against the low rate of tax and high supply of tea ruining their business, because tea was now available officially, all tax paid, at such a low price the smugglers were being ruined. The above account of the "tea party" is more than a little biased. At the time, the US colonies were taxed at a much lower rate than Britain - and, if you think about it, the British mostly had no representation either since most Britons couldn't vote.

Supposedly this was a big influence on the popularity of drinking coffee -- in the Colonies, at least.

All that tea wasted... 😢 [I don't care for the politics, Westminster has always had an "out of sight out of mind" mentality, just ask anyone up north, but the tea...oh...]

Americans can't make tea anyway. They drink that Lipton nonsense (which you'll struggle to find in UK shops as it's such low quality that us Brits won't touch it) and boil the water in a microwave.
