Change is happening all around us, whether we notice it or not. Sometimes it’s subtle, like the way a favorite tree in your backyard grows taller each year, and other times it’s as obvious as a skyline that suddenly looks nothing like it did before.

Through photos, we can see these transformations more clearly. So we’ve gathered some of the most fascinating comparison images from around the web to show you just how remarkable they can be. Take a look below—you might find yourself appreciating the world in a whole new way.

I think those are two different cats in one body. No, seriously: I think it's a case of chimerism.

I read that two-faced cats absorbed a sibling in the early stage of pregnancy. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. It doesn't look like the cat's going to tell us, either.

My tortie is the opposite - instead of her face being half and half, her backside is. When she walks away from you, one hind leg is orange and the other black.

Change is a natural part of life. Even if we refuse to take part in it, the world keeps turning, the seasons move forward, and time marches on. With everything constantly in motion, it’s easy to miss how things gradually evolve around us, or even within ourselves.

Interestingly, it’s not entirely our fault if we resist change. Humans are actually wired to be cautious about it—a survival instinct developed over many years.

In other words, our brains figure out what works and what doesn’t early on. This is helpful because it means we don’t have to keep relearning positive behaviors. However, the downside is that our brains get comfortable with certain patterns, making it difficult to adopt new habits or break old ones. That’s why trying to change routines, like incorporating more exercise, can feel counterintuitive for our minds and bodies.

We have a bunch of teacup roses in one of our beds. The, supposed to be relatively bright and vibrant beauty (It's a "Be my baby") should be a gorgeous pink color. It was, for three years. Two years ago, it changed and now gives me neon orange blooms. I absolutely love it, but have NO idea what went wrong. None of the other teacups have this problem, soil's healthy, all plants in that bed are healthy, it's all good. This one just decided it wanted to be someone else, and so it did.

The downside is that when a bear kills and eats a human, they like the taste. So they are more likely to do it again. So they put the bear down rather than risk it killing again (even if we were on their turf).

They are big, they are strong, they are fast, and they are known to hunt humans for sport. In Churchill, Manitoba, where there is a large population of polar bears in the area, it's illegal to lock your cars and houses because people may need to jump in to escape a bear. There's a team of rangers who work full-time to shoot them with tranquilizers, airlift or truck them out of town, and leave them in the woods to wake up. Sometimes they leave them in a holding facility called "polar bear jail" for a bit to associate negative experience with town and encourage them to stay away. They rarely have fatal attacks, but they have a really good prevention system based on keeping both bears and humans alive.

Let's see what's the prevailing wisdom? Run, disrobe, and pray the polar bear stops and sniffs so you have a chance in hail of not being an hors d'oeuvre?

Your only chance is to stand and fight. Go for the nose, the eyes, where it will hurt them. If they're not super hungry, they might decide the pain isn't worth it and leave. But it is far better to just stay TF away from them. Polar bears are, to me, some of the most magnificent animals in the world. Their habitats are shrinking horribly. We need to do what we can to preserve the species.

Wish this picture used a short male officer instead of a female. This is why women were kept out of law enforcement for decades. Departments used a height requirement that excluded many women. One department in California was sued not by women, but by Asian men who were generally below the height requirement. The Asian men won, and the height requirement was abolished.

Did anyone else put their hand over one side of the picture, then the other? Really does look like 2 different dogs cobbled together. One 1/2 looks like a terrier cross and the other 1/2 looks like a husky, or aussie, or border collie cross. (Huskies aren't the only breed that can commonly have one or both blue eyes). Gorgeous!

Bad habits, however, are a bit different from regular routines. While they don’t benefit us, they feel good because the brain releases dopamine in response to them. When we try to break these habits, we create dissonance, which the brain resists, according to Dr. Luana Marques, associate professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. The limbic system in the brain activates the fight-flight-or-freeze response, and our natural reaction is to avoid this “threat” by reverting to old behaviors, even though we know they aren’t good for us.

true i suppose but likely at great cost. Many black hairstyles take a lot of work to achieve. My oldest granddaughter used to brush her hair out straight. Not chemical, just hair lubricants and patience. Her hair was beautiful when she did but it was work and often pain with tangles. These days she has gone to a mostly natural look except a bit of bleaching. Not "afro" but closer to that end of things.

No, that's not the case. The camera shutter moves across the image, quite quickly, but not instantaneously, in this case from right to left. The image recorded in the mirror was recorded a fraction of a second before the one on the left.

Humans are so set in their ways that we’re actually less cognitively flexible than some animals. A 2019 behavioral study from Georgia State University found that monkeys, for example, are much more open to trying new strategies to reach their goals.

In the study, both humans and monkeys were taught a method to achieve simple goals and receive rewards—recognition for the humans and banana pellets for the monkeys. They were then shown a shortcut that would help them reach their rewards faster. The monkeys were quick to adopt the more efficient shortcut, while humans were slower to embrace the new approach. However, once the benefits became clear, people were more likely to get on board.

Probably different varieties. We grew Corona strawberries (yes, that's the name of the variety) and they were quite white in the middle, even when ripe, and tasted lovely. Other varieties we've had have been deep red like the ones below. Also lovely as long as they are sun-ripened and not bought in supermarket plastic!

    AnkleByter
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

This one is completely misleading, because you can get the exact same variants just growing them yourself, or even between strawberries in the store/at the farmer's market. It has nothing to do with where they are sold or even grown in this case. We have strawberries in our garden that look like both. The taste of the berries will differ greatly too. We have some that are more white in the center that are some of the sweetest berries we've ever grown, some that are more red and still taste good but are way less sweet, and everything in between. For those who assume all/most berries sold in most stores are also less sweet, you're both right and wrong. In some cases it's because of the variety (many varieties, especially those resistant to issues are simply less sweet), in some cases they are picked a little too early, but it has absolutely ZERO to do with where they are sold.

I've come to hate strawberries because I get sour, tasteless berries at any time of year at the store, and I truly miss the perfect, sweet ones I remembered having as a child. Where did all the good strawberries go??

They still exist, lol. Even though we grow the majority of our own produce, we still buy a lot of berries (especially if out of season). What you'll get, no matter where you buy them, will be a mixed bag. There are a lot of varieties that just aren't super sweet. Some of them have been grown to be, or naturally are, more resistant to issues, which makes them better for mass production/sale than those that aren't (because you'll lose a lot of that harvest). We just bought a few packs at Walmart a few days ago, and Save a lot last week, all quite sweet, delicious and perfect. We picked some in our own garden this morning, still delicious, but way less sweet (it's the variety, it's just not a super sweet one and should actually be done for the season now anyway, lol)

They're different varieties. I only know the names in Spanish, but the red ones are, unsurprisingly, way tastier.

Change also becomes more difficult to introduce as we age, but it’s essential for sustaining our cognitive health. “You absolutely can and should teach your brain to change,” says Hafeez. “If you stretch your brain past its comfort zone, you’re opening the door to being receptive to other types of change.”

To achieve this, there are various things we can do. Visual, spatial, and memory exercises are great ways to give your brain a workout, and many of these can be easily found online. At first, doing them regularly might not feel enjoyable.

“You will get frustrated,” notes Hafeez, “but that means it's working—just like how your muscles are sore after taking a break from the gym and then returning. You’ve been out of touch with this for a while, but the more you do it, the more your memory of how to do it comes back.”

Dirt can be cleaned, but marble is a pretty soft rock and years of touching it would remove some of it. You can't fix missing marble, softened edges, or worn down places. It's taken quite a while, but these are the stairs in the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Untitled-6...93f12f.jpg Untitled-66c838193f12f.jpg

There is a marble column in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela called the Tree of Jesse. Tradition was to touch it when you arrived after your pilgrimage. MILLIONS of pilgrims have touched it over the centuries and left such a deep impression that the practice has been banned - but some still try their "luck" 20131028-223346.jpg 20131028-223346.jpg

Another effective way to make our brains more flexible is by learning new skills or hobbies that aren’t related to our daily routines. For example, learning a new language, or trying knitting if you work in IT. “Learning a new skill like this has been shown to ward off dementia, aging, and cognitive decline because it regenerates cellular activity,” says Hafeez. Even simple changes, like taking a new route home, stopping by a different coffee shop, or walking around your desk in the opposite direction, can help.

Great Danes are such gentle giants. My Mom had one when she was a little girl, his name was Duke. Mom got lost in the woods right about the time a forest fire broke out. Ultimately, regularly challenging ourselves to try new things and make positive changes can open us up to viewing the world differently and help us build confidence.

“Most people won’t try something new because they’re deathly afraid of failing,” says Hafeez. “When you see that something is doable it makes you more receptive and brave. There’s that emotional, therapeutic factor that is separate from the neural pathway factor. Over the years, we learn to succeed by viewing our previous failures and successes in a certain light and as we get older we lose sight of that. When you try a new thing it makes you more confident to try to do more new things.”

This is why I always find discussions about trans women and cis women with high levels of testosteron in sports a bit strange. I mean I get it, but why is there zero outrage about tall people having an advantage in sports? Petite people have zero chance in basketball or running against someone whose legs are twice as long, and literally nobody cares.

While working as a nanny, my car battery died. I called a friend, who promised to send her baby brother. Kelsey was a very shy girl, and although she knew Sheila, she'd never met Miles. So to give her time to get used to the idea, I told her that Sheila's baby brother was coming to fix the car. When Miles arrived, Kelsey looked up and up and up at this giant young man, and blurted out, "THAT'S a BABY?"

It is not about the amount of sunlight, but about the amount and type of fertilizer / nutrients in the soil. I'm guessing your neighbour is fertilizing his lawn.

I guess neighbour makes an active effort to get rid of them (manual weeding or herbicides). Dandelions THRIVE on over fertilized soil.

They are just so sunny! They make me happy to see a yardful of yellow. Then, when they change I love seeing that field at night when the seeds glow. I wrote my favorite poem while looking at that field. Plus, you know, bees need food!

Similar situation. My neighbor is old school and harbors a personal vendetta against dandelions. The way he speaks about them, you'd think that they were the absolute bane of his existence. He put so much poison down on his lawn to make it look like a golf course, and tries to trap, shoot or poison animals because they might dig up his lawn. I manually weed my property within 10 ft of his just so that it looks better to his eyes but I let my lawn be full dandelion for the bees in the spring. That's what it's all about. Besides, they're a beautiful yellow flower. There's so many benefits to having dandelions and biodiversity and so few benefits to harboring hatred against perceived imperfections

Dandelions have long taproots that bring nutrients from deeper in the soil and distribute them into the topsoil. They can do fine in underfertilized settings. They are one alien species that actually benefit your lawn.

Good for you! I'd say neighbor is treating the lawn with selective herbicides for weed suppression. You and the earth and much better off living with a few weeds. Also, plus side of dandelions is their benefit to pollinators.

May be brain-injury or stroke related, may be something to do with the light-reception in the eye with the larger pupil (partially blindness), may be because the eye with the smaller pupil is closer to a source of light than the other, or has been exposed to more light right before the picture was made.

In other words, if this is recent, sudden, go see a doctor right away, especially if there are other (neurological) symptoms like loss of strength control over (parts of) one side of the body, slurred speech, disorientation, sudden debilitating head-ache, memory-lapse, unconsciousness. If it happens within a few hours/days and no other symptoms, go make an appointment with an eye-doctor (or what it's called) soon. If it happens slowly, have it checked by an eye-doctor regularly, to prevent yourself from going blind. By the way, if you suddenly loose (part of your) eye-sight, go to the ER as well.

I have something very similar called “Adie's pupil”. It appeared when I was 20 (I'm 45 now), and causes a “lazy” pupil that doesn't easily adapt to light. But when I squint, it reduces the size of the pupil 🤓. It's perfectly benign, but it can give you a headache in bright light.

I’ve milled wheat and baked wholemeal bread for many decades. 380g stoneground flour, a couple of table spoons of white to indulge in a little fluffing and softness, then the usual butter salt and sugar; a splash of malt extract, and sometimes a squeeze of lemon juice and spoon of olive oil. I grind or chop about 5 different seeds to include. They are what makes it special. If I want it fluffier I add more yeast. I used to do it in bakers’ tins, but the breadmaker is so superior. The wheat stone-mill is pictured in the background. IMG_5789-6...c16ee4.jpg IMG_5789-66c8460c16ee4.jpg

I remember trying to get out of an area that had received about 10 inches of snow. I must have shoveled for hours (long driveway). When I got past the trees to the road, no snow. None on the road and none on the other side of the road. I was beginning to think I imagined it all. Coming home that afternoon on a perfectly clear road with the sun shining and no snow anywhere, I turned into the driveway into a winter wonderland. That was weird.

When our library was built, SAAB sponsored a lot of extra features, with the condition that the elevator to the assembly hall could take a whole SAAB. It was driven on stage on one occasion and never used for cars again, but staff loves how easy it is to transport big pianos and such.

I'm 80 and tore my Achilles earlier in the year. 14 weeks in a moon boot, 8 weeks out of it. I have exercises to do but I still struggle to walk for 10 minutes without a rest. I'm learning first hand that it takes so much longer to regain muscle when you're old.

I think its not a up and down question - it's more like keeping to the left (from this side) because mostly coming from the right and needing to go back there. (maybe) I can't think of another reason why the stairs should be more worn down on one side it it's just up and down.

It is. I collect beads (Swarovski recently stopped selling beads retail for jewelry makers), and I have several that shift in color depending on if the light is amber, tungsten, or fluorescent. Quite beautiful.

Probably Alexandrite. Depending on the light source, it can be pink, green, yellow, blue, purple, red, or grey (same stone, just different light sources).

It would look even smaller as a ball. It is difficult to see in the photo but a 1 gram "bar" of gold is very thin. Kind of like a micro sim card or SD card.

This is called "blooming" in chocolate. It occurs due to age and environmental factors. Ambient temperature causes bloomed chocolate to look white; ambient moisture levels cause bloomed chocolate to appear grainy. However, once chocolate is tempered, it can be remelted and retempered over and over again, and it will go back to looking perfect. Blooming doesn't affect the flavor, but does affect the mouthfeel. Btw, my husband is a professional chocolatier.

There's about 2 to 3 times more fat in the 8 weeks post-partum milk. The colostrum is yellow due to having higher levels of beta carotene. This gets metabolised as Vitamin A, and helps develop a strong immune system.

There's a law in computers (which I'm too lazy to look up while I'm doomscrolling at four in the morning) that says computer memory will double every five years while the cost will halve. Experts have been worried that we have hit the endpoint of this equation for decades, but so far it continues to hold true.

Of course this will happen sometimes with stock photos, but it's still funny if you recognize the family from another product you have. (Assuming it is indeed the same people, difficult to say on such a small picture, it could also look the same because such companies always use the same concept of 2 adult 2 white hair kids all in white clothes and with generic hair cuts)

Most butter in the US has beta carotene added to make butter yellow. That's because cows on large-scale farms don't have the same carotene rich diet as cows raised in pastures. The fresh grass and wildflowers are what give butter a natural yellow tone. The other reason butter is tinted is to make it uniformly the same color so people don't get upset if one cube happens to be a little lighter in color than another.

Whichever way you look at it, they are both tasteless, vile and bland and have no right to call themselves cheese ; cheese substitute is sort of ok but I think by European standards you could still be sued under most trades descriptions laws. I once challenged an American guy I met on holiday in France to try some proper cheese (before you start, he was OK and didn't automatically hunt out the closest McDonalds, but was a bit unadventurous regarding food), so as you do, we went to a decent restaurant that had an 'advanced' menu and I explained to the owner that we'd like to sample new flavours - to him and me. Cut a long story short, we both hated the Andouillette Saucisse ( very much an acquired taste)and Snails (not because of the flavour, but the texture), however, after much other stuff, which mostly went down well, I introduced him to Reblochon and Epoisse Cheese along with a couple of others , served with warm baguette and lashings of butter. He's a friend to this day.

A lot of people would still like those small trucks, but in the US federal law said they had to start meeting car pollution standards instead of truck standards. Auto makers said they couldn't do that so they just quit making them.

You are aware Toyota is a Japanese company, and US laws have no effect on what vehicles the company produces and sells outside of the US. This pic was, in fact, taken in Japan (which is why both trucks are right-side drive). Furthermore, the Hiluxe was discontinued in the U.S. in 1995, while it continues to be sold in Asia to this day (the current model is a midsize truck, instead of compact truck, but that change had nothing to do with the US. Furthermoe (again) , several car companies still make compact pickup trucks, including Ford.

They used to be “Two Good” because all of their Yogurts had 2g of sugar in them. Recently, they’ve added new yogurts which have more than 2g of sugar, so they rebranded to “Too Good”. So any “Two Good” labels are basically just old ones they need to get rid of.

Plastic bottles are never 100% watertight. Fluid (mostly the water part of it) diffuses through the plastic itself and, due to changes in temperature and pressure in the bottle, the caps can come loose a wee tiny bit.

    David

That can even happen with aluminum cans. I had some soda cans in my shop fridge that I kind of forgot about for several years. All the cans still sealed, but several of them were only about 1/2 full. And no visible signs of leakage because I think it was just the water molecules that were slowly escaping, not the sugar and caramel dyes.

They were probably not shipped "This Side Up" as the box says. Those seals are not actually water-tight, so even if they were tipped on their sides, there could have been leakage, and vinegar evaporates pretty quickly, so there might not have been any evidence of leakage by the time it was unpacked. Whoever stocked those shelves, however, should have noticed the different liquid levels and pulled the underfilled bottles. I'd never let my stockers get away with this.

Difficult to be sure, but I think the LH one is a specific low fat version, as per the label, but in any case the UK versions of many drinks now use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar, which could be enough on its own to shift the nutri-score like this. The Milbona name is a Lidl brand for many of their dairy products, vaguely from Milk&Bon,
