Who remembers a red-faced Bill Clinton getting outed for his extra-political shenanigans with then-intern Monica Lewinsky? Or the unrelated "Deep Throat" controversy that saw Richard Nixon resigning from office? Rewind to the 1800's and you'll come across what's been dubbed the "Petticoat Affair."

This goes to show you that there's no shortage of scandals throughout the ages. And they aren't always confined within the walls of the White House. Human beings have been rocking the boat since long before tabloids were invented. Maybe it was Adam and Eve who first broke the moral compass and paved the way for the rest of us to veer off the path of righteousness. Who knows...

Either way, hundreds of scandals have gone down in history as fodder for the masses—leaving eyes wide open and jaws on the floor. When someone asked, "What do you think is the biggest scandal in human history?" it opened the gates to a rabbit hole of sordid tales of people, and companies, behaving in less than savory ways. The question clocked no less than 1,300 comments. And Bored Panda has put together a list of the best.

I would specify organized religion. I don't have an issue with people who are privately religious, as long as they don't push it on me. But the ones who try and legislate their personal religious beliefs are dangerous.

I disagree. Yes, organised religion is scandalous and has committed/continues to commit atrocious crimes. However, I believe that there is an inherent need for spirituality in most humans. Spiritual/religious systems have evolved across cultures and time. If they are not abused to gain power or money, most of them boil down to a core set of values that most humans can agree on.

Those values you speak of are achievable, if not inherent, without religion at all.

Rejecting religion because its scriptures don't hold to 21st-century scientific standards is a rather immature point of view. I agree that scriptures have been used to control people and that some people take them too literally. However, they were certainly not written with the idea to control in mind. Fiction can be used to illustrate certain points. To understand scripture, of whatever system, knowledge and reflective capabilities are necessary. I find that there are deep insights about human psychology and the same core values found across different systems. I also don't need to agree with everything in order to find religious texts an interesting read.

Even without religion, people still fight. Viewing only the bad part is shortsighted. I'm atheist, but you need to be unbiased and objective when you view history. Many times it helped people. Personaly, I think monarchy and nobility based on nepotism is far worst than any religion...

Just because people will likey still fight without religion, that isn't a good reason at all to keep it. Why unnecessarily create more division to fight about?

All religions and philosophy share the same approach to positive change. They just add a bunch of extra stuff so they can claim to be the only "correct" path. https://www.amazon.com/Framework-Change-Freeing-Finding-Meaning/dp/B0DV4CFXQH

Our dear friend Wikipedia defines a scandal as "the strong social reactions of outrage, anger, or surprise, when accusations or rumours circulate or appear for some reason, regarding a person or persons who are perceived to have transgressed in some way a social norm."

And boy have we seen our fair share. But not all scandalous acts result in a scandal or produce the same consequences. Some people suffer a fall from grace while others remain unscathed. Seemingly immune to scandals despite their blatant scandalous behavior. Experts believe it has a lot to do with the media.

The media are more likely to create a scandal when transgressions disrupt established norms, notes an article published on the University of Alberta's website. "When public figures who hold themselves up as paragons of morality are revealed to violate the social order they purport to uphold, a scandal is sure to follow," it reads.

So basically, if you paint a picture of yourself as someone with a squeaky clean image, and a moral compass that always points in the right direction, don't be surprised if the house of cards comes crashing down when you're caught in a compromising position.

This one is less of a scandal and more of a scam.

The university adds that media coverage of wrongdoing only activates a scandal when it speaks to powerful and interested social groups.

"Audiences are not homogeneous: what is egregiously offensive to some is unremarkable to others," explains the site. "Those who operate at the intersection of multiple, diverse interest groups may seem immune from scandal because only some constituencies find a particular behaviour objectionable."

A scandal is only likely to emerge if the most powerful audiences are willing to act upon the transgression, say the experts.

Scandals often come to light on social media but they don't always blow up to the point of damaging reputations, unless a well-known or prestigious media outlet picks up the story. But the status and credibility of a media outlet also plays a part.

"The media not only publicize transgressions but also shape scandal narratives," reads the site, adding that any attempts to delegitimize the media could help someone caught in a scandal to escape bad publicity.

For example, an outlet is often attacked and accused of producing "fake news," as certain individuals (follow my eyes but don't look now) may remain unjudged, and untouched, despite their blatantly scandalous behavior.

Blister packs of white pills on a light surface representing a potential scandal in human history related to medicine. The pharmaceutical giant Bayer sold a d**g for hemophiliacs that ended being contaminated with HIV. Once learning of the contamination, instead of ceasing sales entirely, the company choose to only discontinue the d**g in the US (where the evidence of the contamination and associated deaths had come from) and proceeded to market the product in Asia and Latin America. Many patients contracted HIV and ultimately died of AIDS because of this decision. To my knowledge, no one from Bayer has ever been prosecuted.

34 Of The Biggest Scandals To Rock Mankind Since Adam And Eve Ate The Apple One of the biggest scandals in human history has to be the Panama Papers leak in 2016. It exposed how world leaders, billionaires, celebrities, and corporations were hiding wealth in offshore tax havens. The scale was mind-blowing—11.5 million documents revealing financial corruption on a global level. Politicians resigned, governments were shaken, and it confirmed what many already suspected: the ultra-rich play by different rules. And the craziest part? Hardly anyone faced real consequences.

The whole idea of men being somehow better and more valuable than women. It's not just about ownership. How many female Einsteins and Newtons never got a chance to contribute? How much suffering, ra*pes, sui*cides, pain, tort*ure, over thousands and thousands of years, just because of this one sentence "a man is worth more than a woman"? And men suffered, too. I'm a woman & am just finding out how many women contributed to our society but we heard NOTHING about it in school or elsewhere.

This one is a double edged sword. If pharmaceutical companies didn’t make good profit, they would never go through the expense to develop new medications, which save and improve so many lives. However, some are just plain greedy.

Person fueling a car with a green gas pump, illustrating a possible scandal in human history involving fuel or energy. Lead in fuel. Many people know about it and why it was partly outlawed, but not enough people know that the dangers and health problems were known right from the beginning. It's the biggest scandal in terms of loss of human life in existence. Estimated at hundreds of thousands of deaths per year still to this day.

Boomers value democracy because we remember the decades of socialist and oligarchial famines that the uni-party systems, puppet dictators, created in various parts of the world. CIA and other US and Russian agencies toppling democracies to put in place friendly puppet dictators. A huge tragedy in South America, East Asia, and Africa.

The key word is "dictators" not socialists. You can have a socialist democracy. Capitalism allows single people to control methods of production. Socialism means if you produce it, you own it (think stock options and family farms)

How many homes were stolen from people. I know several who lost houses because their mortgage companies "lost" documents, forged documents, & and basically ran out the clock until they lost their houses. There were even two female attorneys, HIRED PURPOSELY TO LOOK INTO THIS IN FLORIDA, and when they found corruption & forgery, they were fired. Obama should have just paid a couple of years worth of payments instead of handing the money over to the mortgage companies, money that was taken from the people who bailed out those mortgage companies & still had their houses stolen. NOTHING was ever done.

Billionaires (including Trumps friends) were handed failed banks and all their assets at no costs because "the assets where a risk". But then the government turned around and insured all those "risky" assets. Literally a straight wealth transfer.

Give people easy mortgage loans they cannot afford, then foreclose on those loans. Use US taxpayer money to bailout banks for their loses on those loans so they can buy up the homes and rent them out. The US government should have bailed out homeowners instead of the banks. AI Overview The "US mortgage bailout scandal" generally refers to the government's response to the 2008 financial crisis, specifically the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), which involved bailing out failing financial institutions.

I am not sure a 4 000 year old customer complaint really amounts to a huge scandal... Although that seemed to have method in it, as the customer allegedly named Nanni was not the only one complaining: "Other tablets have been found in the ruins believed to be Ea-nāṣir's dwelling. These include a letter from a man named Arbituram who complained he had not received his copper yet, while another tablet said that he was tired of receiving bad copper." (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ea-n%C4%81%E1%B9%A3ir) So Ea-Nasir's business practices seem at least questionable.

Person in handcuffs with wrists secured, symbolizing scandals in human history related to crime and justice. The biggest scandal, and the oldest, is that no-one on God's green earth has yet worked out how to stop the five or so percent of the human race from preying parasitically on the rest of us.

As a result, we all need locks on our houses, businesses, cars, you name it, and passwords on our devices. We have parasites from pickpockets to dictators, from cyber criminals to Ponzi scheme promoters.

We arrest some, we jail others, and nothing stops them. They are the scourge of our species, just as Covid was and whooping cough still is. The wide ranging harm they cause is immeasurable.

In the name of whatever supernatural entity you believe in, can *someone* please come up with a truly effective deterrent, because I can't.

There ARE methods at least to lower their numbers. Proper education, housing, support for the poor, free (at point of receipt for our right wing nitpickers) health care, less inequality. However, all this means that the superrich earn a million less than a year additionally to the 5 billion they already don't need - and that people need to stop begrudging others the black under the fingernail. Both is very unlikely to happen.

Dont reduce people to an unga bunga 0 ir 1 tribal system. You can add that and stop feeling superior to those you call rightwinger or lebtards. This frankly culty political 2 side war is doing damge. You dont reduce people to just two sides and pick one to feel better about yourself, Then expect for good things to happen. The left wing in the usa used the corpse of an old dying man... backstabbed bernie in 2016 cus he was an actual threat to the rich... The right party well... i am sure you know but they are filled with those who only care about pure self intrest at the cost of others so they are the same None are inherently better on such a large reductive scale. So for the live of fk stop picking a side from two evils! It does not make you better. Focus on individuals. And stop calling anyone who diverges naazzii or libtard or commi or woke or hard right or other insults to make yourself feel better. I am not just talking to you specifically. Stack of tied vintage letters and old photographs beside a pen and ink bottle representing scandal in human history. I don't have the biggest but I have the one that makes me laugh. In Ancient Rome Julius Caesar as the head of Rome had an enemy in the senator Cato. During a meeting when Cato was denouncing Caesar for being treasonous and many other things, a messenger came in and slipped Caesar a note which Caesar read supposedly smiling. Cato thinking he had a gotcha moment yelled something along the lines of "see?! He is so bold as to plot and conspire against us here in the senate house. Read your letter aloud!" ...It was a raunchy love letter from Catos sister who Caesar was having an affair with. It was read aloud in front of hundreds of the most powerful men in the entire Republic.

I mean, yeah, Caesar seduced her and used her letter to create just this situation. And everyone laughs and thinks "what a cool guy this Caesar is". But in truth Cato saw through Caesar's charisma and realised that Caesar wanted to become a king, basically, and that's why he fought him. If anything, this story shows that the one with the witty remarks and the "cool and funny jokes" isn't automatically the good guy.

They also focus grouped shifting terminology from "Global warming" to "climate change" with the intent of leaving the public less concerned. "Warming is bad, but change is all around us!" But....i will never, ever tolerate this notion that individuals shouldn't be aware of their impact. That study that was floating around a few years ago, concluding that 100 companies were responsible for 70% of emissions....that study attributed all downstream emissions, emissions created by individual consumers, who chose to buy and use the product, to the corporation. The top 20 spots or something on that list were oil companies....but here's the thing, while retrieval and refinement do bring their own emissions, 85-90% of emissions tied to fossil fuels are from individuals burning them. The US is 4% of the human population, but accounts for 15% of global emissions, 29% of those emissions are cars, 10% from agri, 25% electricity, 13% residential and commercial, 23% industrial. There are 8.2 billion people on the planet, it's insane to pretend that the cumulative action of all of them isn't impactful. Yet for all the people that claim to care so much, they do things like zero in on "private jets" The global emission total for 2024, was 41.6 BILLION tonnes. All private jets combined have an output of 10 million tonnes. Or no, it's china's fault! China. Yes, china had an emission output double that of the US in 2024....but china also has a population 4.35x higher than the US....and 10-12% of china's emissions can be directly attributed to american companies, building products for american consumers. Absolutely EVERYONE bares responsibility for this problem, trying to attribute blame to a single thing, that never seems to include "you" is what people do to make themselves feel better, not to actually try and solve the problem.

It's worse than that. Eunice Foote was an amatuer sceientist and the first to observe that air with higher concentrations of Co2, such from burning coal, absorbed heat faster, reaching higher overall temperatures, and held on to the heat for longer....in 1854. No one disputed this, in fact she spent years traveling around giving lectures on her findings, and the rest of the scientific community built off her research, with prediction models as to the long term consequences (which have since proven true) being published in the early 1900's. For more than 80 years, this fact was treated as a dire problem in need of solving....it wasn't until after WWII was over, and gas guzzling cars began being marketed as "freedom" highways began construction, and oil companies realized just how much money they could make that science began to take a back seat. The Exxon study in the 70's, was just confirming what had already been known for 120 years.

Organised religion is the biggest and most successful pyramid scheme to date. For example, the Catholic church has an estimated wealth in the 'billions of dollars'. Yet they still ask their congregation for donations at every mass, whilst not paying any taxes because they are classed as a charity (UK). It makes you wonder what they are collecting all that money for when they obviously aren't using it to help those in need.

They're so boring. Give me a tanzanite instead. Or an emerald. How about amethyst? Shall I keep going? Colored stones are so much more beautiful and rare.

His new thing now is that the country has too many federal holidays, and we are losing billions when companies close for those days. At this point, all I can do is sigh and roll my eyes, and remember that it will end at some point.

I think that Trump wants to have a war with some country - any country - so that he can be a war time president and not call elections in the future. Just my opinion

How the greatest democracy on earth gave up on intelligence for glam and things how Americans not only closed their minds they began to barricade the door.

America doesn’t even know itself now you stopped reading you stopped writing you stopped doing THINGS and allowed yourselves to be lulled into stupor by dopamine and greedy self interest. You embraced cowardice and coat yourselves in fear.

Your only hope now is deep diving into knowledge going to libraries learning your d**n history. .

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” - Isaac Asimov, 1980

When you breed a religious population to never question anything that disagrees with what their leaders are saying, you are begging to be exploited.

Also, I know it's hard right now to remember, but many of us are furious at what's happening in our country! Many of us saw this coming and voted against it...TWICE!

Native English speaker here: Why is darn being censored? There are contexts where the words "thing", "deep" and "diving" are offensive, but "darn" is an officially permitted word to be used in place of bad words. Darn cannot be offensive.

People forget the USA is not a democracy it’s a republic, you have abdicated these important decisions to politicians.

That's like saying a Ford Festiva isn't a car, it's an automobile. Republic is a form of democracy. Maybe not the best form, but democracy nonetheless.

I remember when that was all over the news and how bad I felt for those guys. Why can't a band use actors to perform their music, when they know the actors will do a better job of selling it?

The 1534 Act of Supremacy that solidified Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church of England in order to break England from the Pope/Vatican was WILD. The Pope wouldn't annul Henry's marriage to his wife SO that he could marry Anne Boleyn to try for a "legitimate" male heir.

The people loved his wife Catherine, and now she was being made persona non grata and on top of THAT, if you even whispered that Henry wasn't the head of the Church or showed support for Rome, you were a traitor. And I think we all know how Henry treated those he saw as his enemies, no?

    Ah, those kooky royals...

Some people also forget all of the people put to death in the name of religion. Op mentions Henry VIII's fondness for putting people to death but that figure (guessed at 57,000) was dwarfed by people killed by the catholic church (guessed at millions).

Best thing that ever happened to the church in England, finally the masses could get to read a bible in English and listen to a sermon in English instead of some old language they did not understand, plus many more things to numerous to mention.

And most of the changes he originally wanted, he revised, so the Church of England was pretty much the same as the Catholic Church, just with him as the head instead of the Pope.

    Our debt-based monetary system.

The biggest scam in the history of mankind with the biggest implications. We would all be living much more prosperous and safer lives.

    >*“The few who understand the system will either be so interested in its profits or be so dependent upon its favours that there will be no opposition from that class, while on the other hand, the great body of people, mentally incapable of comprehending the tremendous advantage that capital derives from the system, will bear its burdens without complaint, and perhaps without even suspecting that the system is inimical to their interests.” The Rothschild brothers of London writing to associates in New York, 1863.*.

Agreed. Remember, socialist and communist countries run on debt-based economies too, just like capitalist ones do. And for individuals, even under communism you can get loans for things like cars.
