31 Of The Most Baseless And Cringiest Things People Ever Heard In Their Life, As Told In This Thread
Common sayings are a big part of culture. We frequently hear aphorisms that aim to teach us a general rule of thumb for life in different scenarios. In particular, our grandmothers and parents repeat some sentences continuously throughout our lives. Proverbs, phrases, and aphorisms can hold some essential truth in them, but have you ever reflected upon their real meaning and value?
Sometimes our experiences can refute a commonly repeated phrase entirely. Today's story covers some of the most untrue things that people have heard throughout their lives, including aphorisms.

"Money doesn't bring happiness."
F**k outta here, miss me with that dumb s**t.
As far as I'm concerned money means financial freedom, who wouldn't be happier knowing you ain't gotta worry about paying bills no more.
Money gives you options. I've been able to retire 5 years early, and I'm much happier than I was when I was working. It also buys reliable cars, nice houses, fun holidays, and removes a lot of the stresses of life.
“Looks don’t matter”. Besides from having actual powers, being attractive is a goddamn superpower.
"Don't give up". Sometimes it is necessary to cut your losses and start anew. Don't fall for the sunk cost fallacy.
Generally speaking, idioms come from cultural powerhouses, such as religion, literature, and folk stories. Good examples of idioms originating from religion are the sayings "Turn the other cheek" or "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" as both of these come from a religious background.
Interestingly, the same aphorisms and idioms are often present across cultures and languages. Some sayings are essentially the same between different tongues. Research on language universals suggests that even though the words in which we communicate a thought vary, the meaning itself is the same.
For example "Solve two problems with one solution" becomes "One arrow with two birds" in Nepali, or "to catch two flies with one trap" in German.
That the big division in the world is left vs right when it has always been rich vs poor.
Yep, this whole "culture war" BS is just a distraction from the real problem.
"It is not in our budget this year to give raises"
Said months after the company reports RECORD profits and a massive raise for the CEO.
"Corporation has record profits, but the employees are underpaid." WRONG. Corporation has record profits BECAUSE employees are underpaid.
“I’m just an honest person.”
No, you’re an *unpleasant person* with nothing nice to say.
Those who claim to be brutally honest are more interested in being brutal than honest.
Some sayings, such as "Don't give up," can be quite inspiring to hear the first time. But the reality is that sometimes you need to give up on something to re-orientate yourself on a better path. The difficulty is in recognizing when you should let something go, whether it's a goal you have, an ambition, or a relationship.
It all comes down to introspection and a rational assessment of your circumstances. It's hard to give up on something that might be special to you, or something that you worked hard on, but it can be proven to be necessary.
Talking about rationality, Sunk cost fallacy is a great thing to be aware of too. It helps you to spot if you're in a prison of your endeavor, amongst other things.
Logical fallacies are cool on their own as they can vastly improve the robustness of your arguments, and the ability to spot any weak spots in other people's rhetoric as well.
"Corporations are people."
Except they're practically immortal, have more rights than actual people, limitless resources, and never have to serve prison sentences for breaking the law.
I will believe that a corporation is a person when the state of Texas executes one.
Turn the other cheek. My parents were big on that and it did nothing for me but make me a doormat until I had enough and learned to stand up for myself.
Bullies COUNT on this. When they face no consequences, it is the same as giving them approval to continue.
Other things that people were immediately skeptical of include even scientific theories which are often repeated in media channels, not only mundane catchphrases.
The flat Earth theory was popularized in the 2010s, covered in Physics World. There was even an attempt to raise money to prove that the Earth is flat, with a goal of $200k, later upped to $1M, over the GoFundMe platform. However, there's no real evidence that the goal was met. Due to the popularization of the flat Earth theory, the believers hold a national conference for it in North Carolina.
The so-called 'flat-Earthers' discuss the theory, and hold educational seminars. However, scientists have strong opinions on the theory and consider it entirely disproven centuries ago. As covered in this Astronomy article, to make the flat Earth argument coherent, you need to believe in a global (pun intended) conspiracy of people faking scientific evidence.
The biggest load of b******t I've ever heard? That the Earth is flat. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, some people still cling to this absurd belief.
I wonder how they think the GPS on their phone works? Or what the 'G' stands for?
1) they don't (to be fair: neither do most non-flat earthers) and 2) you can name stuff anything you like, and in this case "maliciously mislead" people into accepting round earth. - I'm playing devil's advocate here, NOT defending flatties. I'm constatntly baffled at their confidence in assuming their "knowledge" acquired through "careful observation" surpasses literal MILLENNIA of scientists building our technologies based on "BS" and succeeding. Also: if the earth was flat the tourist industry would have set up tent at the rim, making billions with amusement parks where you could take bungee jumps and rides to enjoy the spectacular view, take millions of pictures and buy fridge magnets.
Load More Replies...I sometimes wonder if the Flat Earth thing just started off as a gag. Like a sociology study just to see how far and wide some totally ridiculous thing could spread. Then it got out of hand. And now the originators can't stop it.
We cats are knocking them off the edge of the earth, but they keep hitting elephant ears and turtle flippers.
Same with anti vax. Science is knowledge. Ignorance and stupidity reflects on the person who has these ideas.
One only has to look at the sky to see that every other celestial object is not flat.
True, but many of these same people believe that outer space is a hoax. I once argued with a man who believed this. He said the sky was a dome and the objects in it are reflections of light. After several minutes of arguing with him, I realized I was never going to change his ignorant mind and walked away.
Load More Replies...I guess that's why flat earthers were dead against social distancing during Covid. It pushed them over the edge.
We never landed on moon and dinosaurs aren't real. Oh and the holocaust and 9/11 were faked by the govmnt. Let us not forget those dumb asses
The only thing flat is their head. Their brain was squashed when they were dropped on it. Lol
I really think it started out as troll joking and they kept it going and then the other trolls and gullible people joined that nonsense. You can’t see the curve of the earth on the flattest clearest terrain from a mountain because the arc of curve is 8% which the human eye cannot detect. High up it can be seen. The sun would always be shining and we’d been an inferno if we were flat. We would have no atmosphere and no water as it would run of the edges and leave forever lol. You could make you own flat model at home easily just to figure that out.
It is supported on the backs of four elephants which is on the back of a turtle.
My tattooist is a flat farther, the only one I know. He doesn't trust empirical knowledge, and he doesn't trust scientists (he is kind of religious) He isn't wrong, scientists have done stupid stuff throughout history. But he fails to think critically. Science should be more accessible.
My conspiracy theory is that all of these ani-science conspiracy theories, like flat-Earth, anti-vax, 5g, etc., are propped up by oil and gas companies to sow seeds of doubt about climate science.
Why is it such a big deal to flat earthers? Why can't they accept that the earth is round? Ehh never mind
Lastly, aphorisms, sayings, and idioms can become cliches over time. Most cliches once were quite powerful words, but as time passes and we hear them repeatedly, they lose value and the impact they once had. Do you know any idioms that are timeless classics for you? Is there any saying that makes you roll your eyes? Let us know in the comments below.
We are a nation of laws, and no one is above the law.
“Take your problem to HR.”
HR is not your friend. They can and will protect the company first.

“This isn’t just work, we are a family here”.
"The only true thing in the entire world is my holy book written centuries ago by religious fanatics on a particular landmass who weren't even present for the events they narrate. Don't believe your senses, your friends, your experience, your "science" or "facts" or "logic." Don't believe _anything_ except what I say that my book says is true.".
Why are so many willing to let men who have been dead for more than 2000 years dictate them how to live their lives?
“Your call is very important to us” while being on hold for an hour.
“Your call is very important to us. Please wait until it is no longer important to you.”
“Being gay is a choice.”
Self explanatory, way more people would choose to be gay!
Happy pride month y’all! :D.
“Did you actively choose to be straight? Or did you just know?”
God wanted it that way.
F**k off with all that.
If it's clear what God wants, why are there over 45,000 different Christian denominations?
"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" as our country holds folks in poverty and certain Electeds brainwash them into keep voting for more of the same. .
"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" was originally meant satirically - to make fun of the very type people who use the phrase now. Try pulling yourself by your own bootstraps. Youl'll end up flat on your a*s.
"You're a good worker!" *gets assigned more responsibility for same pay.
And if you accept it you can kiss promotions goodbye. Why promote someone doing 4 jobs?
That I can't sue over a misdiagnosis that cost me my leg. It was more than my leg. It was my freedom, independence, ability to work and defend myself. Apparently necrotizing fasciitis is hard to diagnose.
This was during covid and I talked to a Dr through a tablet. I waited for 20 hours with a high fever and no trauma. They said I had a sprained ankle.
The government as a whole cares about its people. This pretty much goes for most countries, not just America.
This. As a Canadian I can say with complete certainty they don't care s*** about us.
Most conspiracy theories. As a project manager I can attest there is no way in hell that "they" could pull off half the conspiracies and not blab about it. Seriously the projects I've worked on are challenging at best. LOL.
I heard someone say, "You could never have a conspiracy across the whole scientific community because we're very gossipy people who drink a lot."
New study shows consuming ____ x times a day may reduce your risk of cancer by as much as x%.
"Reduce your risk by 20%" sounds like a lot at first. But if my chance was 1% to begin with, and you're saying I could get it down to 0.8% by drinking asperagus juice every day, that sounds much less impressive.
“She’s harmless. Just ignore her.”
No, she’s not harmless. She is a vindictive b***h who will do the same to anyone she comes in contact with.
The people that thought you can't wear face masks because of "mask breath" and how bad it was for your dental hygiene (or whatever they called it).
Clean Coal.
Clean lithium, cobalt, and every other mineral they rape the Earth for to make cell phones, solar panels, EVs, etc...wake up!!
There’s more than one way to skin a cat. Why is this a phrase?? It weirds me out every time someone says it.
We REALLY hate this saying. Have you ever seen a sphinx cat?
I once interviewed a guy for a sales role and mentioned we were looking for someone to sell in South Africa (not the job he came for), and he came out with all sorts of BS about how well he knew the market and then named dropped several politicians before coming out with the line "I walk with Mandela, and have access to everyone".
Strange how he looked blank when I said what did he think of Madiba.
Well, think of it this way. Sometimes BP runs articles about men who do bad things. I don't feel attacked by those articles because I'm not one of those men that the article attacks. Likewise, if you're not the kind of Christian they're attacking, then are you really being attacked? Maybe they're attacking someone else.
