Is it just me, or does it look more genuinely authentically 'farmhouse' in the 'before'? The 'after' just looks like they forgot to paint it after messily slapping a primer coat on.

It's a wash stand. Before indoor plumbing you'd have these in bedrooms with a pitcher of water and a big wash bowl. Dry sink means it isn't plumbed (although a lot of people used to repurpose them in Victorian houses by using them as sink bases)
