They're actually not that big. EDIT: Average adult US wolf 79lbs/36kg and 32in/82cm at shoulders, while alaskan husky "between 20 and 26 inches (51 and 66 cm) and weigh between 35 and 75 pounds (16 and 34 kg)". So they're smaller and especially much lighter, but not THAT much smaller. Wolves have the weight and length of a German shepherd, but longer legs hence taller.

I never knew this, but I have always been a fennec fox lover. We get normal red foxes in the UK, I have known a few people over the years who have rescued one and ended up keeping them as a pet. They are very loving, intelligent and affectionate animals and we have monsters in the UK that hunt them on horse back for sport. This is a practice that should be banned, it's barbaric.

Upvote because I thoroughly agree about hunting (they try to justify it by saying they keep vermin at bay) but I would never want a fox as a pet.

This is not a 6000 year old baobab. According to Smithsonian Magazine: "The oldest known living African baobab, the Dorsland tree of Khaudum National Park, Namibia, still lives despite the senior stems having recently toppled. It is approximately 2,100 years old.*

I've seen some really old giant redwoods in California. I have some things in my house from the 1800s and that is weird to think about - but kind of a drop in the bucket compared to 6K

I'm assuming you mean "Bantam", which means "small fowl", such as the Seabright & Pekin chickens (the ones I used to breed). There is no such thing as a Giant Bantam (it's like saying "a huge tiny..."). You can get bantam versions of a lot of chicken breeds, but those are not true bantams. The one(s) pictured looks like Cochin (but could be a Brahma), I used to have some in black, buff, & blue. They get massive!

I wonder if they have much flavor. I had access to a field where a berry farmer had some different varieties of raspberries and blackberries for testing. A variety of blackberry had much larger berries than in the wild (maybe 1/2 - 2/3 the size pictured). The vines were much less "spikey" making them easier to pick. A win and and a win. BUT - the berries were sadly lacking in flavor compared to the wild blackberries that grow all over around here.

Google tells me : "The heaviest wild bull ever recorded weighed 2,800 pounds (1,270 kg) and, in captivity, the largest bison weighed 3,801 pounds (1,724 kg)." For comparison, we used to have a Charolais bull named Samson who weighed in about a ton. We took him to the fair one year and he made the other cattle looks small. And that 'largest bison' is almost double his weight. Holy Moly and so on.

In Alaska there was a stuffed grizzly where you could stand right up close to it. The paws / claws are just MASSIVE. Each claw was roughly entire length of my hand from wrist joint to finger tip and most folks think I have big hands. It made those stories of "a bear knocked off somebody's head" much more believable.

A happy memory for me is that in the 90s I got to pet the giant tortoise from the original 1967 Dr. Dolittle film. I watched the movie in theaters as a boy so it was weird to run across him. (her?) He was living out his retirement years at Reptile Gardens USA in South Dakota. He was in a large cement 'circle about 18" tall which kept him in but you could sit on the wall and visit. Nobody was waiting so I just sat on the little wall and visited him for a while. He was an absolute unit and super friendly. By "pet" I mean he really liked having his neck and arm pits scritched. Basically the parts of him he would have trouble rubbing against things himself due to being close to the shell. I did not try (cuz rude) but he was so big if I sat on his back he could totally have carried me around. It was weird to think I was an adult in my 30s but this guy was a lot older than me. I believe I read he has since passed but he lived a long life and was apparently well cared for.

Sadly not all islands, they get very little space to roam freely (I only know of Moyenne Island and Cousine Island, both tiny), some privately owed enclosures mainly as magnet for tourists, some are in botanical gardens on Mahe and some on La Digue. Many tourists treat them appallingly, feeding them c**p, having their kids sit on them taking pictures, heck even having full grown fat a*s adults sit on them for pictures. Seychellois let anything happen in their country as long as they get paid, it’s sad to watch where it’s heading.

Tiny bits of both MI's upper and lower peninsulas do drain eventually into the Mississippi (via the Lac Vieux Desert in upper and some ditches that make it to the Kankakee river in the lower). Plus a few small acres of SC do drain into the Mississippi eventually also.

They are also known as raccoon dogs. I had a friend who once had a pair. We were in the exotic animal scene for years, us mainly reptiles, but we knew a lot of people who had some interesting animals that's for sure. Now a real raccoon, which we don't get in the UK are to die for, just the cutest animal ever, they like to touch your hands, feel them like they are trying to work something out, and their little toe beans are so squishy and soft. Adorable

This may be because lemon trees are a hybrid. One of the parent plants is citron. I'm guessing this tree was started from a seed, and when you plant lemon seed the resulting plant may not produce true, but a mixture of the parent plant(s). I'm a plant nerd, and I approve this message. 😎

It swallowed a three story house being used as a factory. They say technically not a sinkhole because it was 'man made' due to leaking sewage pipes. Imagine being the security guard,, sitting in the house - then it falls 300 feet into a pool of sewage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Guatemala_City_sinkhole

I would like to point out that huntsman spiders are also afraid of humans. So if they see you, their day is ruined as well. Some of them are actually way more social than a lot of humans - they live with their family of up to 300 members (maybe don't think too long about that if you see one in your home), they share their food with each other and their bite (if they bite at all, because they really want to stay away from humans) is harmless to humans. Meaning your bite could hurt the poor thing much, much more than the other way around. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/388489-Delena-cancerides

Depends, you're probably right, but there is a lot of the world that doesn't have easy access to the medical treatment. Plus there is a boy, who right now is 11 years old, and 6ft 9, with plenty of time left to grow. His mother however, does happen to be the tallest woman in India though, so it shows that in some ways, height is genetic. But it is unlikely that even with genetics someone would reach or surpass wadlows height, surely.

I wonder how he adapted in his house. I had a friend who was huge, not as huge of course, but tall enough that his head would almost touch the ceiling in newer constructions with lower ceilings. Fortunately he lived with his parents in a 19th century house with very high ceilings.

Those birds are cool. I feed them peanuts in shells and they pick them up and gauge the weight and take what they think is the heaviest one. I counted one blue jay pick up and put down 18 peanuts before he finally found one to his liking. Ive also seen them take a peanuts fly away and decide its not good enough and bring it back and exchange it for a different one.

I'm really surprised they decided to keep it. A fish that large has good genetics both in size and in health. It's the same thing with the large Maine lobsters that are sometimes pulled from the Atlantic. Let's hope this mammoth of a fish was able to leave some of it's size genes with some offspring. I assume this is a yellow fin.

not trying to sound like a spider snob, but that's a juvenile female, i live out in the Australian bush and occasionally find fully grown chonkers that can just about open the door themselves, fortunately they are very placid and shy. You can actually pat them or stroke them if you're gentle .

At this point it's considered suicide, your body is not meant to be pushed to those limits. Working out and getting strong is good but when you go to these extremes you are destroying your whole body. You may look strong but you pretty much cut your lifespan in half and you will have so many medical problems and complications.

For years there was a local burrito place called Banditos Burritos. Their burritos were about like this. Just loaded. Sometimes I could eat a whole one but usually it was save the rest for dinner kind of thing. Sadly they got closed down due to legal issues. It wasn't just a name. They had ties to the Banditos biker gang and a number of years back there was a sting operation and a bunch of arrests. (not for the burritos - for other crimes.)

the color of the skin of the banana doesn't matter. inside, the fruit is probably just the right amount of sweet. you can put a whole banana in the embers, if it's black on the outside, it's cooked and sweet on the inside. Maybe it was in the refrigerator and that's why it has a brown skin. you can't tell what's inside from what's outside.

Up until just a few years ago Panasonic was still selling 100 inch to 152+ inch Plasma screens, spoiler alert after their initial production run they had to be made to order, took months to be delivered and the cheapest (100 inch) was almost $100,000 AUD - at the time AUD was almost on parity with USD so ~$99,000 USD I guess. The place I was working at wanted to order 4 of the 100" ones until they realised it was going to cost over half a million with shipping and fitting (plasma screens are HEAVY and very fragile so not the stuff you just get a couple of IT staff to put on a VESA wall mount... it needed a authorised AV company to setup else, worst case, lose your warranty). Still, having seen one of them installed at an exhibit in Japan to say I've never seen better since

So this thing is longer than a US Nimitz class aircraft carrier (approx 3.5 football fields long) and can carry 1k+ more people. It was hell with about 5k people, I couldn't imagine 6-7k. And they can dump untreated, raw sewage into the gulf and Caribbean greater than 3 nm from land. Bigger isn't always better. I bet this thing is either going to cause an environmental disaster or isn't going to be able to handle choppy water.

They used to call the idea an Arcology, I wasn't aware anyone had ever really tried one. It probably would've done better to be a hexagon, i.e. fold it up a bit. You'd get a bit tired of having to walk a linear kilometer to get to something at one end, from the other, but a closed shape like a hexagon would let you have a nice courtyard/central area and the same amount of building, plus being able to cut across and general shorter distances.

(normal ones, not this freak) and say stuff like, "It would be so much harder loading the hay bales in to feed because you have to lift them up so high. (spoiler - his pickup trucks were job tools not 'compensation') On the up side for a bar employee - built in sobriety check. If you can get into that truck you are probably good to drive it home.

Probably so it can turn at a very slow speed. there is a smaller but still impressive fan over the produce section of a local grocery store. It is huge compared to most ceiling fans but turns slowly. I think the idea is to move just enough air to discourage fruit flies and move the gasses that come off some veggies.

Actually not! One of the requirements for it being considered the "World's biggest burger" was that it had to be consumed (and it was, by fairgoers). The restaurant which produced it said they would be happy to make another for $5000.

This is known to be fake. The top pic is from a old report on the evolution of McDonald's packaging, while the bottom pic shows a comparison between a Mega-Mac (which uses Quarter Pounder sized patties and bun) and a standard Big Mac.

That photo might be faked but the concept is not. I was around for the original big mac when you could recite the TV ad jingle and they would give you a free one. Big Macs have definitely gotten smaller over the decades.

Story time: I had a childhood friend who's father collected taxidermy animals, you would walk through their front door and had to navigate around them all. Sadly, when she was 11 her dad died from a massive heart attack, the type where you are dead before you hit the floor. Our friend group all rallied around and made sure she always had someone to talk to or cry to. She was obviously devastated, but through her tears she said "at least we can get rid of all the creepy animals now".
