In a perfect world, we wouldn't have homeless pets. Unfortunately, the best we can do, besides adopting, is to donate to and support adoption centers.
There are many ways and programs you can choose to support in order to help reduce the number of helpless animals on the streets. One of them is the spay and neuter program. The biggest factor behind the existence of so many homeless pets is overpopulation, which can be greatly reduced if the pets are unable to procreate.

You can also directly sponsor an animal. By doing so, all of the funds will go toward food, supplies, or veterinary bills for the animal of your choice. This donation can and will alleviate some of the expenses of the animal shelter where the animal is currently living.

I only adopt adult pets from the shelter. We never take the babies home because everyone wants a baby. We never buy from breeders either. Our last three additions have all been found on the streets or the one that was dumped into my backyard in below freezing weather and she was only. 4 weeks old. How could someone DO that to a defenseless puppy??

My last 4 dogs have all been older. The youngest was 7 - she is now 14 - and the oldest was 11. I have been so lucky to have had them in my life. It's funny how they all made their own little spot in my heart.

Don't feel bad, I am also a total failure at fostering kitties. It's the only thing that I'm proud about failing at as often as I have :)
If you have time to spare, you can also volunteer. Shelters and rescue organizations are in constant need of people who can assist them in keeping up with the animals. There are many duties that volunteers can help with, such as cleaning, socializing with pets, taking dogs on walks, feeding, and volunteering as foster parents.

The story behind this adorable kitty from the original post is just as lovely: Story Time! So, like, I was at the adoption center, and I saw this really sad-looking cat. My heart totally broke for it. I couldn't resist, so I ended up adopting the poor thing. I went over, started talking to it, and, surprisingly, it started purring and getting all cute! That was it – I knew we had a connection. I filled out the adoption papers super fast, and now, I have this adorable kitty at home with me. It's so amazing to see it happy and loved now. Going to be a beautiful long haired cat. Get him used to being brushed on a regular basis. Like a fun pre-bed time activity etc. He's going to be fluffy and it will keep him from getting matts and also keep hairball, "aaaccckkk" production down to a minimum.

This is true. We adopted a two year old long haired cat from a shelter who had been returned twice because people thought he was bad tempered. He was so badly matted I had to take him to a groomer to be shaved. After that I probably brushed him once or twice a month and he never got matted. I suspect they never brushed him ever and maybe he was pissy because he was uncomfortable. He became like a socialite cat who lived visitors, and would even hang out when we had parties.

A lot of people hate pet rats for the same reason: ignorance. Rats and cats are both cute, cuddly and affectionate pets, but there's so much misinformation about how cats are "mean" and rats are "dirty". Ten minutes of cuddling one usually puts an end to that nonsense. ^_^

My parents wouldn't let me have a cat when I was growing up. They were devout "dog people." As soon as I had my own place, I adopted my previous Dresden and she quickly converted my parents into "cat people." My mom has decided she will never have a dog again. To be clear, she doesn't hate dogs now, she's just figured out that she much prefers being owned by cats over owning dogs.

Vet - she'll need to be wormed and vaccinated, tested for FIV and FeLV, and eventually fixed. Then kitten food and a litter box. And keep her an indoor cat! It's a dangerous world out there for outdoor cats, even owned ones, and it's very bad for the local environment to let cats out.

Train her to love grooming time, make it fun time activity before bedtime or some such time. Brush regularly to keep matts from forming, keeps shedding to a minimum too. Sets up happy loving time instead of yucky traumatic stress.

Yes. You know they feel safe and secure when they let their guard down, and have that first really deep sleep, instead of sleeping with one eye open and jumping up at the smallest noise or motion, like they have to do to survive on the streets.

Hard to tell from just one picture... But I'd say he's got terrier in him (quite possibly Jack Russell, or even Bullterrier), and maybe some other bully breed, or a lab. Usually there are several different breeds in the mix... But most importantly, he is the cute & beautiful kind of dog breed. :)

Well, only if they want cuddles. Let the kitty come to you freely. If you grab them and maul them, they may avoid you. Happened to my sister and niece despite my warnings. My kitties run up to me for love (and treats) with their tails held high.

Most cats are lactose intolerant. You can buy kitten formula though.

Kitten formula from the vet is best. You can use goat's milk too, but avoid cow's milk.

Your cat will give you its best life, filled with floofy fun, unconditional love, some temper tantrums, and a ton of fond memories. Every single cat has a unique personality.

At 8 weeks, it should be old enough to at least eat some kitten food mixed with cat formula, even if it's not quite ready for an all-solids diet yet. Get it fixed when your vet says it's old enough, keep it inside... and ignore the people who tell you that your cat needs expensive 'grain-free' cat food to live its best life. There's no real evidence of any benefits, and some suggestions that it might be harmful. Whatever food you can afford that your cat will eat is most likely fine. Don't give up if it doesn't like the first flavors you try! One of mine will eat pretty much anything; the other one only eats fish flavors, and any chicken or turkey we tried early on got pretend-buried - cat for 'this tastes like poop.'

I found a similar looking calico last fall under my neighbour’s porch with her orange sister. I called her Spicy Girl because she was super spicy and bit me real hard on the thumb when I tried to catch her. Ran into the forest and spent the night alone, poor dear. The orange one I named Rusty and she was more chill and let me take her home for a bath and some foodies. They just turned a year old about a month ago and are my little sweethearts.

Mine do it all the time (despite several immaculate litter boxes around the place). Clean space for them and easy to clean for me.

Take the pooper scooper, scoop up some from the tub, and transfer it to their litter box, to put their scent there. Then take the cat to the litter box, hold their paw while moving it in the litter like they would when digging and covering. Then clean and sanitize your tub to get rid of their scent from it. Once they put that 2 + 2 together, that they’re supposed to use the litter box and not the tub—-which is usually pretty quick—-the dumps in the tub should stop. Just be sure to scoop the litter box daily, and change the litter and clean the box weekly. Cats are obsessively clean animals (a dirty cat is a sick cat who needs to go to the vet) and will out and out refuse to use a filthy litter box.

Regular vet visits, spay, always use gentle hands, no milk, quality food, get her a water fountain, and make sure when you open a cabinet or door that she's on the right side of it!

Get some claw clippers and some good treats. You want to make claw trimming fun yummy snacks time before it turns into wrestle-with-cat time. And look into a collapsible play tunnel. You can get them very cheap on Amazon, and the cat will love it. My mom calls ours the best 10 bucks she's ever spent. It's a few years old and has many, many claw holes, a couple full-fledged tears and an improvised structural repair, but it's still hanging in there!

i left bathing instruction above, but the first step is always to take to the vet to make sure they’re healthy. get home, bathe kitty, and make sure they eat. very important. don’t want a grumpy kitty on they first day. make sure you very carefully brush the kitty and check for fleas. if anyone has anymore advice feel free to tell me!

If the cat is healthy according to the vet, there should be no need to bathe them, which can be pretty stressful for them, especially if they're already having to handle a vet trip and a new home.

I had the very same issue. My friend named him Norman. Well, a month later Norman had a litter of kittens, she was too young and they all died. Had Norman spayed, changed name to Norma. Norma's nickname is Honomo answers to Kiki.
