While wrong number texts may look like a fun and innocent thing to laugh about, Daniel Markuson, the cybersecurity expert at NordVPN, warns that they may be a part of a sinister scam known as “smishing.”
“The most important thing is not to click on any links in the text message that looks suspicious,” Markuson reminds everyone. They may contain malware. “By replying to the text, you can make it known to the scammer that the telephone number is active. The best thing you can do is ignore the text,” the cybersecurity expert told Bored Panda.

When you map out beforehand how the conversation is supposed to go "Is this Cara? Yes it certainly is..." and you get thrown a curveball it can really mess you up. In my work people sometimes start with "Excuse me" because they want me to do something for them, but when I reply "You are excused" the confusion is delicious and quite often ends the convo right there. One man said thank you, and drove off.

That is like a Phone call i got they asked if the was the person they were trying to call. I said no i think you have the wrong number. Then they ask me if they were there. Like what are the chance you dial a wrong number and the person you want is stand right near the person on the other end.

The Wrong Number LED To A Wholesome Experience
“Victims first receive a very ordinary text message, something along the lines of ‘Let’s move the meeting to tomorrow morning.’” Markuson explained when asked how exactly scammers use the wrong number texts to scam people. Moreover, “The scammers first want to make sure that the phone number is active. They expect the victim to reply that this is the “‘wrong number.’”
After that, Markuson explained further, “they try to get to know their victim and ask a couple of questions to make the victim feel comfortable. But sooner or later, they try to persuade a person to invest in cryptocurrency, click on some links, or fill in a form.”

In rare cases, scammers even try to form a deeper relationship with their victims and then ask for money. It’s important to mention that scammers tend to target particular people. Markuson argues that “they usually target people who have less advanced technological knowledge or cybersecurity awareness - such as elders.”

“They also would try to target people who have more money, or on the contrary, lack money, so they are ready to do anything to earn some. However, most often, scammers target random people whose telephone numbers they can guess,” the cybersecurity expert explained.
For anyone who’s wondering if it’s possible that your phone has been hacked when you receive a wrong number text, Markuson says that it’s probably not the case. “The hackers will not bother to send you messages if they have already hacked your phone and have access to your information,” he concluded.

"Hello is that x"; "No you have the wrong number"; "what number is this?"; "What number did you dial"; "what number is this"; "no, you dialed the wrong one, tell me what number you're trying and I'll tell you it's wrong". etc etc. You messed up, I'm not going to tell your fat fingers exactly how.

The best one I know of was actually on the phone. My Dad got a call. "Hi, is Don there?" "Hi, Donny, this is Shirley". Shirley was his sister. They talked for over 5 minutes about the kids and how things were going. Finally, somehow it dawned on them that she had called the wrong number. How it went on for 5 minutes before they realized is beyond me, but with such a huge family, any name that was mentioned probably belonged to someone in the family.

Honorably mentioning: the older woman who invited a random kid to her thanksgiving party. It started as a wrong number, but she said sure, come anyway! He did, and they became friends, and every year there is an update online on their thanksgiving, I think it has been seven years now.
