Happy Birthday! When my sister had her son (Downs and heart problems) the doctors told her that he would be "lucky" to live to be a year old. Together, they proved the doctors wrong, and he lived until halfway through his 24th year. We will always miss him, but he gave us all so much joy while he was here.

Congrats. I love confusing the medicos. I've already been dead, and came back. Two serious car crashes, in which the fire service, and Police said should have killed me. Both on the same corner of the same road. First a kamakazi run me off my side of the road, second black ice. Other minor brushes. Now defying double cancers. It's the power of your brain and determination, and judging by the smile your humour that keeps you beating the odds. Keep up the fight Mr Indestructible!

A number of years ago a pregnant stray cat wandered into my house as though she owned the place. She had five kittens in my bathroom. In February my son turned 16, we got him a moped for his birthday, we don't have much money so we busted our a*s to get it for him. He was waiting to take his CBT so did not have the chance to even ride it. My dog had pyometra just come on, we would have to find over a grand or else they would let her die. My son told us to sell his bike, without even thinking he wanted to save our dog, I have not told anyone this, to many people talk up their kids on social media when the kids are in fact little turds, my son total turd, but a selfless one. I only have shared here as I really feel that bored panda has a community and I'm so extremely proud of him. We did not need to sell his new bike, we rallied the family and got the money together.

Yes, it does. The curls are formed by the structure in which the hair has grown, that doesn't change. I mean, when curly haired people straighten and wash it, it'll still go back to normal

A Complete Stranger Bought Me These Beautiful Wheel Covers For My Wheelchair
Back in March, I casually answered a post on the internet asking what you would buy if you had $500 but couldn't spend it on anything you needed.
I had seen these covers earlier in the year, but there was no way I could afford them. I made an offhand comment about how I would get these "because they're pretty and I want to be pretty too".
Out of many people offering various suggestions, a very kind and generous gentleman from America sent me the money (with his wife's approval) to cover the purchase of these Izzy Wheels covers, which are made to order in Europe. It took a while, but they finally made their way to me in New Zealand!
I love them so much! Not only are they super fun, but I no longer get my fingertips caught in the spokes every now and then.

They look to be a perfect match with your style! My chair is so drab looking, but doesn't have these big wonderful wheels to decorate (it's electric with small wheels). Honestly, someone should start a business that beautifies wheelchairs... I think it would do particularly well in a large city that has a higher concentration of people who use chairs.

Our Soccer Ball Rolled Out Into The Street In Front Of A Garbage Truck. The Driver Stopped The Truck, Got Out, And Took The Time To Teach My Son Some New Moves. Made His Day
The driver was a former club-level soccer player in Haiti and couldn’t have been any nicer to my kid. Still had some great moves and took the time to show my 8-year-old some new skill moves. What a great moment he will remember forever.

What is it about great trash men? When my son was 2, he went through a phase where he was obsessed with trash trucks. Every Monday and Friday at 5:55am the truck would show up, my son would hear it, and we'd run out to watch it and wave at the guy driving. After about 8 months of this, one day the guy gets out of his truck and walks up and hands my son a little hot wheels car! Told him thanks for waving to him everyday, it made his day a little brighter. That started my sons collection of hot wheels (now at around 1500 cars, thanks to a neighbors donation), and he still remembers that nice trash man, over 4 years later..

Lately I’ve been struggling with my difference in weight and appearance, wanting to go back to being underweight. But I try to look and remind myself that I felt terrible in the before pic and could barely function. Can’t say I’m a whole lot happier right now but it’s also hard to see the light within the dark. Last Week I Underwent Surgery That Will Probably Change My Life
I’ve been an amputee for four years. Traditional prosthetic sockets would not work well for me, I was able use them for maximum 30 mins. That led me to use wheelchair most of the time. However, I have the same disease in my hands that I have in my feet and my hands have been getting worse the last year. By the time I was up for surgery I was practically stuck in bed with sore stumps and painful hands. This surgery will most likely lead to me being able to walk ALL the time. It’s like a dream, a painful and wonderful dream. It’s called osseointegration and is basically hammering a titanium implant into the bone which I will be able to attach prosthetics to. I’ll be trying my feet on in only two weeks!

Where the doctors attached my titanium implants, there is no pain. The bone grows around the insert and everything works like it did before. I am so grateful that there are replaceable body parts. :)

Meet Captain Ruben and his son, First Officer Ruben. Captain Ruben flew with Southwest for nearly 31 years and inspired his family to pursue their dreams of flying too. Not only did his son spend his whole life working to become a Pilot, but his brother and cousin are now Southwest Pilots too! Captain Ruben shared many flights with his family before retirement, including his last flight from Omaha, Neb., to Chicago (Midway) with his son serving in the right-hand seat as his First Officer. I work for another airline and we see similar pictures in our internal news letter. I always love them. I think kids understand and see things that we don't. We just seem to lose that level of consciousness when we get older. So maybe she knows something about that tree that we don't. Maybe it's someone she used to know.

Today I’m Four Years Sober From Alcohol (Timelapse)
Today, I celebrate 4 years of sobriety from alcohol. It’s been a long journey, and I still occasionally crave alcohol, but life is beautiful, I have two cats and a wonderful partner - things I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t given up drinking. I'm not saying alcohol is bad, I'm saying I can't partake in it because it negatively affects my health.
If you’re one of those people who would say, "I'd drink to that," please pour yourself some bourbon whiskey because that was my drink of choice. Sometimes, I miss the burning sensation and the numbness, but life doesn’t have to be like that. If you’re currently struggling, hang in there - it gets better.
In my first year of sobriety, I had the opportunity to return to one of my jobs from before my downfall, and this time, I left on good terms. In my second year, I bought a boat and am currently fixing it up. In my third year, my partner and I adopted a bonded pair of cats. In my fourth year, I adopted a Husky mix from my stepsister after she said the dog was too much for her lifestyle. I love Maya the Husky, and she’s the dog I used to dream of when I was locked up during the pandemic.
Life is so beautiful. I’ve learned that I can’t drink alcohol - it’s not worth the cost of losing everything. There’s help available if you’re really seeking it, but ultimately, you have to make the choice not to give in to temptation.

To Jess Smith, since they're downvoted and I can't reply: It may only be $80-$100, but it's still more than most people, especially in a job like a pizzeria, have EVER gotten from their own bosses. And yes, the employees chipped in. But the boss was in on it. It's not a fortune. But at least this boss showed that they care about their employees as people, and not just disposable labor machines.

I onced worked for a very stingy restaurant in a remote area. Manager was never around, and during the day we would sometimes find homeless people who had snuck into a certain quiet back area of the building for a snooze. I had an agreement with the cooks that they would put together a sandwich and a cup of soup and I’d add a can of soda and bottle of water and bring it to the person. We called it a “sandwich special” to be covert. “I need one sandwich special please!” Never got caught :)

My Pablo wasn't allowed to eat after 9 last night because I had to take him in this morning to get neutered (😳☹️) so I hid his bowl from him last night and holy smokes it was like a theater in here last night from all the very very dramatic play he put on as tho he was starving! He ate at like 8:55 and at 9:05 when he realized the bowl was gonna the dramatic performance began!!! 🤣🤣🤣

About 16 Years Ago, I Made A Best Friend. I Met Him For The First Time Last Weekend
I was 15, living in Norway, and was really into computer games. I met a guy from Amsterdam through Steam (a computer game platform). We became really good friends and played games or watched movies over voice calls together almost every day for a few years. Time passed, and we slowly grew out of our regular routine of playing video games. We continued to stay in contact through Facebook. I ended up moving to the East Coast USA 11 years ago, and then moved to California in 2022. My friend's partner grew up in California, and I received news last Thursday that they had just arrived in California to visit her family. It turns out that they were only an hour away! After convincing my wife that I had to meet this guy, we planned a day trip to Joshua Tree.

Bob's fame never crossed the big pond to reach my country (as far as I know) so I discovered him through pop culture and, of course, the internet, back in the early 2010s. I was having trouble sleeping at night and was searching for ASMR or at least a soothing voice to tuck me in. Being fluent in English, my YT algorythm would promptly direct me to one of Bob's videos. Game changer...He was then long gone of course but his gentle, smooth personality had me hooked! Still watching YT weekly marathons of Bob painting and healing my soul.

My dad has shaved his beard ONCE since 1974 (in 1989). He HATED how he looked (and so did we) so he has kept his full beard since. Now it's snow-white and getting a little thin, but I still can't imagine him without it.

It's not just autism (me too) but physical ailments that aren't visible. I got yelled at for getting stuck on an elevator at work when its for DISABLED people - just take the stairs! um... I have a problem with my hip that makes taking stairs a painful venture. Just because I can walk mostly ok on a flat surface does not mean I can take stairs. Due to back problems on top of that I once had to call for help to get the too heavy bathroom door open. Handicapped accessible my @$$. I read all this and realize I'm kinda needy. When did I get this old???? Last I remember I was like 36

I sometimes use the handicap bathroom simply because I'm physically incapable of urinating if someone else is in the room. I don't know if that's a disability and I always feel a little guilty, but I've had to walk out of bathrooms still feeling like I'm going to burst because I couldn't get the flow started more times than I can count. Seriously, the moment the last person leaves the room I can go just fine, but I absolutely cannot do it if anyone else is in there. I can't even go to sporting events because of it.

In New Jersey, there is a wolf sanctuary called Howling Woods. Definitely worth visiting if you get the chance. You have to make an appointment, and it will cost you 30 bucks a person, but you get an hour to meet and play with about a dozen different wolves. They are super sweet, and it is such an amazing place.

Kids that age are so amazing. I've been teaching that age -- first Kindergarten, now Transitional Kindergarten, for decades. A few years ago, as we were doing our calendar activity, I mentioned that particular day was the birthday for one of my brothers. Later, when the kiddos were having free time, one of the little girls in my class handed me a handmade card. I said, "Oh, for me?" She said, "NO, Ms. Lyon, it's for your brother." Oh, my goodness. My brother lives two hours away, so I scanned that paper, all sides, and sent it as a happy birthday email. Her smile the next day when I told her he said he loved it was as breathtaking as her doing the card in the first place. That's the stuff that still has me in the classroom with those little people after so many years.

At the end of the night, we would put the leftover popcorn in big black garbage bags and then use it the next day for the first show. Now, whenever I go to the theater, i HAVE to hear the popcorn machine running and see it make popcorn before I buy any.

This is embarrassing, but I used to frequent a certain Roy Rodgers after work back when I was a nanny. I was usually exhausted after work and just needed food quickly because I almost never had lunch. (Which was totally my fault because I was too lazy to pack one) The workers got to know me pretty well and always remembered what I liked to order. I moved away after a while and several years later I stopped at a different Roy's one day. Crazy enough the guy who took my order knew my name! He used to work at the other Roy's and somehow remembered my name and order after all that time. :)

I was visiting a cafe almost daily while clearing my Aunt's house. Once that was done, I was never really in that area so didn't go to the cafe. About 6 months later I was there, so I went in and the barista said "The usual?". I said "I haven't been here for 6 months how do you even remember me?" and he shrugged and brought me the usual. I use to buy gas for my vehicle at different gas stations. Some gas station pumps will print out a receipt for you if you want one. So e don't. So you have to go into the store to get your receipt. A little more than a month ago I started to buy my gas at a Shell station. I have to go inside to get my receipt. There is always the same attendant in the store. Last time I got gas and went into the store/station I even didn't need to ask for my receipt. He automatically handed my receipt to me.

GMOs are both promise and peril. So-called golden rice is not as miraculous as people think it is - the Vitamin A in it is useful only when consumed along with oils that are not easily obtainable in regions where people grow golden rice. The best solution is a varied diet. We still need more research in how genes work. On the one hand, companies are free to advertise that they are GMO free. On the other, banning GMOs is going overboard. We just need to use our noggins.

My son and I cuddle all the time. I tell him he's beautiful, sweet, funny and all the other good stuff. Kids need to be cuddled, gender really isn't important in this case. I'm a teacher and got a training recently. They told us it's very important to give kids a pat on the back or head or even a hug. Kids absolutely need it to feel seen. And they need to learn what is normal, so they will understand what is not.

A Stranger Paid For Me, Dried, And Folded My Laundry When I Was Completely Overwhelmed With Stress And Anxiety From School And Accidentally Fell Asleep
I was in my last year of university when I decided in my last semester that I would pick up another degree. I was taking 21 hours of classes, and most of them were intense and difficult.
One of these days, I started a small load of laundry in my apartment complex washroom. We only had one washer and one dryer (maybe 20 tenants in the small complex), so if you were one minute late to take your clothes out, you would come back to find them on top of the machine in a soaking (or steaming) pile.
While waiting, I sat down in my apartment to catch up on some projects and was so worn out that I fell asleep for hours, leaving my laundry in the washing machine. I was fully expecting (and okay with) finding my laundry in a soppy heap as I way overstayed my welcome. Instead, I came back to find my laundry dried and folded in a neat pile on top of the dryer. These are quarter-slot machines, so this neighbor also sacrificed $1.25 and went out of their way. No one would have faulted them for leaving the laundry atop the machine, but instead, they took the time to go above and beyond. As I said, I've never forgotten this. I found this sub yesterday, and this was the first thing that popped into my mind, 8 years later. I never found out who it was, but it made me like all of my neighbors a little bit more.

Yeah, we have that at our work, too. With the TV screen and everything. One of the managers' nephews got hired, and made employee of the month in his first few weeks. Meanwhile, I've been there 3 and a half years, and have yet to be picked. I know it's petty. But I can't help it if it still hurts a little. I'm used to it though. When you have something like AuDHD, that's just how it is. Sigh. Sorry for being a Debbie Downer. Just a bit of a sore point for me.

They Didn't Have These When I Was A Kid
I was at my local CVS when I spotted these. For context, I'm a 29-year-old white woman who didn't even realize that black hair was textured differently until high school because every Black Barbie had either White Barbie's hair type or just had plastic on her head. I kind of wish they were at eye level, but it makes sense that they're top-shelf since they're the most expensive. I'm just happy that little Black girls are growing up in a world where they see themselves.

My wife got a phone call one morning years ago telling her that her father had passed away in his sleep. After we made the initial arrangements we stopped at a restaurant for breakfast. Of course she was on her phone most of the time we were there, talking to various people, and when we got ready to leave the server told us another customer had heard and paid for our breakfast. It might have been a small thing, but it was a little bit of light on a dark day.

Had My Anatomy Scan Today And Got To See My Baby
I'm 22 weeks along. The baby moves around all the time, and seeing the baby move on the monitor and feeling them at the same time was so precious. Just enjoying the process of becoming a mother. It makes me smile every day.

Sometimes foster care is necessary, without parents being actually bad persons, but just overwhelmed by a specific situation. The dog might have had a happy home, and of a breed that requires experience and not everybody can handle. Looking for a place for dog AND child could have taken too long.

After Nearly 18 Years Together, It Finally Happened
Myself and my wife had our 12-week doctor visit today as my wife is currently 12 weeks and 3 days pregnant. I am happy to report that mom and baby are perfectly happy and healthy to this point! The doctor remains optimistic and has been incredibly supportive in dealing with some of the concerns and anxieties that the missus and I have both had. This whole experience has been the best kind of overwhelming.
I had lost hope for the future in the last couple of years. With sudden deaths, familial breakups, and life problems, there had been many nights that I prayed to the Lord to take me as I was too much of a coward to do it myself.
Now, I have rediscovered the fire and drive of my youth. I am bound and determined to give this child a happy life. I can’t wait to show and teach them the things that I was never taught or told. I am bound to continue improving my health so that I have a better shot at making it far into adulthood. My number one goal in life now is to someday unleash this kid out into the world educated, confident, empathetic, understanding, compassionate, happy, and kind. I love them so much already. November can’t get here fast enough.

We Got Married At A Music Festival
Took my wife to her first Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas back in 2019. That was where I first told her I loved her. After going back to this festival for four consecutive years, we both knew we wanted to get married under the electric sky. My mom is the same. A few months ago I had an important DR. Visit. She insisted on meeting me there. Than she insisted on coming into the Dr's office with me. I had to repeatedly tell her no I'm like 40 years old 10 times. She waited in the waiting room, when I came out and told her the positive news she took off her glasses and started rubbing her eyes. Mom's are the best and the love never dies, even if you spend 20 years being a dirt bag.

Found These Letters My Mom Wrote When She Was A Little Girl. She Was At Sleepaway Camp
My mom died of Alzheimer’s in 2019. These letters were found at my grandma's house, who just passed away about 2.5 months ago. She was 97 and saved everything, which I am now so thankful for. I miss her so much and “I’ve written every day so far” made me cry. I also guess they painted ashtrays in arts and crafts in the '60s.

Today One Of My Patients In The ER Gave Me This Steel Ring As A Gift, It Honestly Made My Day
I am a family medicine physician working in the ER and between all the chaos one of my patients that came for chest pain gave me this ring because she told me she felt taken care of when I received her and that I was the only person that treated her right these last days, apparently she's been having problems at home. Her EKG was alright and her cardiac enzymes too.
