I think you completely misunderstood me. I was arguing against someone who was trying to claim that people would just choose to abort at 8 month for no reason. The doctor wouldn't do that. I wasn't talking about medical emergencies which are clearly acceptable. And I think you knew that but wanted to argue anyway.

Really? You're telling me that in the whole country there are no f'ed up people who want to? I'd be willing to bet money you're wrong. As I pointed out in the original post, most people are sane and sensible but there are absolutely people who are not.

Maybe try re-reading what I wrote and actually thinking about it a little more clearly. If you completely remove rules regarding when you can legally have an abortion there WILL be people who choose to have them later and later and later. The first post, the one in the article suggests no rules, just let each person decide. So you're saying you're happy with some horrible person saying "Meh I don't want this baby" at *any* point until it's born. And before you say "oh but the doctors would refuse", how? If it's the persons right to decide then the doctor becomes obligated to do it.

Do you assume everyone in the country is a nice, sane, rational person? Because holy s**t, just look at the news any day of the week and you'll realise they're not.

1. And again, you're failing reading comprehension, or maybe you are literally not reading what I wrote at all. I'll spell it out for you, the OP says leave it up to the individual. ie: No rules, no laws, the individual decides. At the moment any late term abortions have to be medical reason *BECAUSE OF LAW*. Because at a certain point the fetus is considered to be a person and it's immoral/illegal to terminate it without medical reason. If you remove the law blocking and say it's the mothers choice then you're effectively saying it's fine for her to abort after 24 weeks. I mean it's her choice right? So would you be fine with it at 26 weeks, or 30, or 34, or 38? Well it doesn't matter you don't get a say in that, because it's the individuals choice right so you don't get a say. And again, it doesn't matter whether it's an abortion for medical reasons or just because she doesn't want the kid, because it's the individuals choice. Are you seeing the problem yet? cont...

2. There absolutely needs to be a law decided upon by the medical community in conjunction with the actual people involved (ie: women) where sensible rules are determined and enshrined in law. Like the maximum term where at at will (as opposed to medical necessity) abortion is still legal. Clarity on medical necessity abortions to protect both the doctors and mother from legal consequences. And the laws should be nationwide so you don't have problems with one state going after a person because at will is say 22 weeks in one state and 24 in another. Enshrining laws also protects the womens rights because it means the doctors can't deny a woman that choice.
