There was only anything worth watching certain hours of the day. You couldn't watch anything otherwise. From 3 to 6, every channel showed talk shows. From 6 to 7:30, news on the networks, but from 7 to 7:30 the indy channels would show sitcoms. From 8 until bedtime: NEW SHOWS!... but only between mid-September and mid-May. Summer break? Christmas break? You can play outside all day long and STILL have hours to watch TV? OLD SHOWS ONLY!!!!

My family planned our whole Sunday around being ready to watch "Bonanza" when it came on that evening. I even remember when we got our first COLOR TV!
And, back then, commercial breaks were about 2 minutes long. Now they are more like 4 minutes.

Thinking that you may never have the chance to see the show again unless it had a summer rerun AND you were not on vacation that night. And not knowing that the Wizard of Oz, which came on once a year, changed to color when they got to Oz, because you didn't have a color TV yet.
And I can't believe how big of a deal it was that we were the 1st ones in our area to get a video game...ATARI'S PONG!!! A dark screen with a dot to hit by moving "paddles" up or down.

When I was a kid it was black and white tv and you had to keep adjusting the vertical hold. Pause it, you were lucky to get a picture. And I am only 60, yes I said ONLY

We didn’t have VCR’s, so I would lie in front of the TV and hold a cassette tape recorder to it so I could listen to my favorite shows later. I thought I was so tech savvy, or I would have if I had ever heard the phrase.

When I was a kid in a little town called Streaky Bay there were no ads. The only channel was the ABC and one other but we only watched the former. If you needed to go to the loo you had to hold it in for as long as possible. I remember sitting through Doctor Who jiggling because I didn't want to miss anything. When my family moved to Adelaide I loved ads as it actually meant you could go to the loo without missing anything. I still love ads as it means I can do this without having to ask what did I miss?
No pause! I was grounded on night from tv. I had to miss the full house episode when they go to Disney land. I dint think i ever got to see it!
Forget running back...how about having to adjust the antenna to get reception? Plus there were only like 7 channels.

No way could you do bathroom AND snack in one run. You had to plan them across multiple ad breaks.
How about the ROTARY ANTENNA. If you lived an an area where your stations were distant and scattered, With a k**b twist of that Archer controller, sitting on the Motorola Quasar or next to dad's chair, the roof-top antenna would rotate in the direction of the city you wished to receive. We were in Ocean Springs (Biloxi), Mississippi. One maybe two channels local, all the others were in New Orleans, Mobile, Ft. Walton and Pensacola. I was about 10, one thing I remember, when we kids were outside hard at play, every half hour or so, all of the TV antennas would start turning randomly in different directions for news programs and boring grown-up stuff. But on Sunday, I think 7pm, check local listings for exact time (TV Guide), all the antennae in the neighborhood would align and point in the same direction. Wonderful World of Disney, In Living Color. This antennae phenomenon would also occur for Brady Bunch and Partridge Family. Pause button not included. Please don't sit so close to the TV.

That's why I actually prefer Hulu. The 90 seconds of ads 3 times an episode are when I get my drink, snack, do a dab, et cetera
Is it just me or did we manage to summon super powers sometimes trying to get back before we missed anything in the episode? I can't count how many times I got a bruise from running into furniture or clipping a corner just right. Back in olden times, no one knew of the great magic of "Pause". And then came of Gospel of TV Guide to help the weary masses divine when the beloved show would be airing.
Um...I still have my original television from 1980's...it has bunny ears. Try to get a cable guy to work on the cable....they can't figure out how to connect the cable box to that television. Once they did, I keep telling them they need to bring a new box to the house or give me one to take home before I bring the old one back (for an upgrade or replacement box if not working) since they can't figure out how to reconnect the cable to that television if the current box is removed. I kid you not....I have to literally take the new box to my house and pull the cable coming out of the television going to the box and connect it to the new box or they won't know where to connect the cable to the television.
Couldn't you jut pause it - so funny. I also love the post about how when you missed an episode of you favourite show, you really missed. Like in, forever. (Ok, almost forever. noone knew that most of this stuff would be online 30 years later)
The trauma of this experience in my childhood (on the one clear channel and two "snow storm" ones) has made me the binge-watcher of series I am now. I DO NOT want to wait a week for the next episode... even back then I usually forgot what had happened previously (although quite a few programs had a "Last time on..." introduction).

In the UK the electric grid was literally ready for the advert break that came around 8.30pm (I think it was in the middle of Coronation Street) when like half the households in the entire country put their kettles on at once to make a cup of tea.

They still have channels, they just have gone to cable. There's also "antenna channels" if you don't have cable but most of those are also on cable.

No. Didn't even have a vcr back in the 70's most tv's didn't even have a remote. Wanted to change the channels you had to literally get up and change the channel manually. Only 3 channels unless you counted PBS than 4. The show's would go off around 1 to 2 am in the morning wouldn't come on until maybe 6 am.
Could you just pause it? Bless, lol A young woman teaching a class I was attending mentioned that she'd heard that people used to have to get up and walk to the tv to change channels. I said, yes, that's right. We also used to walk in front of cars waving a flag (Yes, kids, that actually was a thing when cars were invented. No, Im not old enough to remember that in person)

What was that expensive Charter cable you could eventually get that allowed you to record and pause? We had that for a bit and I thought it was amazing. You could look at the TV guide and see what would be on and when, and have it automatically record so you wouldn’t miss it-you could even tell it to always record any episode of a specific show whenever it’s on. I wish I could remember what it was called-but it sure felt luxurious to not have to wait for commercials to use the bathroom or get a snack!

She thought the display screen was where we see the show, the buttons are used to "search through Netflix, Disney+ or whatever we want to watch and we can put a CD in... ...here! 40 years old in a few weeks and currently on holiday. Very excited / proud that we went OUT for dinner after 8pm and stayed up after midnight!! But did still walk passed most of the bars and restaurants because they were "too loud" or "busy". We just wanted peace and quiet, with decent food, a nice atmosphere and as few other humans as possible. We're officially old. But had a lovely evening!
A few months ago, I (only 43) had to show a kid how the gas pump worked. He kept hitting the octane number. After the fifth punch I told him, "You have to lift the handle cradle. It's old school." He lifted it, and pleasantly chuffed, said, "Thank you, sir!" And I was instantly 70 years old.

Honestly, any of these that start with “remember when?” and then show computers or cell phones seem silly to my old self. Those all still feel new to me! I still remember when a cordless landline phone felt like future tech. I called a friend from it and told him I was in the front yard. He was blown away. And we didn’t even keep the phone. It was a gift for my grandparents, and my mom wanted me to test it first since she didn’t trust the technology!
My official first “I feel old” moment happened way back in 1997, when my son was 6 years old. We had an old stereo system that had a record player. I still owned a few albums, but never played them, because it was missing the needle. I finally found one in an old thrift shop and set about putting it to use. After listening to the first side, I told my son to flip it over to the other side. Being a child who only knew CD’s, he exclaimed, “It has music on both sides?!! Cool!!!” (This kid is 30 now, which officially makes me ancient!)

I remember telling my husband that smart phones were just a passing fad because they were so sensitive they might not stay off if you put them in your purse or pocket and that no one looks at the internet enough to justify those charges.
I was in college with a smartphone before the iPod existed. Windows CE was as bad as anyone said but it was pretty rad when I visited Kansas and realized the fields all had free WiFi and in 2002 I could surf the internet on the go like most people take for granted now.

Making my grandchildren watch APOLLO 13 so they could see what a real miracle going to the moon actually was - spaceship with knobs & buttons and no digital/computer
No doubt! I turned 40 last August, and my (now husband) and I went on our honeymoon in January to Puerto Rico. There was all kinds of partying and clubbing and we were like Nah, let's grab a glass of wine and sit on the beach and just cuddle and listen to the waves. No crazy drunkeness or anything. And we too stayed up late cuz you know ... honeymoon special occasion lol.
It's just hit me that I'm the same age my late mother was when she was busy having her first Year from Hell, with a husband (my dad) battling cancer while her father (my grandfather) passed away from a heart attack. I thought she was so old back then. Now I'm THAT age, though it's been eighteen years since *I* lost MY dad and six years since I lost my mom. That makes me feel ancient.

Load More Replies... As a member of Gen Z I always find this stuff kinda funny. A lot of my entertainment was old growing up. My family often watches disney movies from around the 70's like The Cat from Outer Space and rarely does anybody else know what I'm talking about. We also had an amazing VHS collection.
Everyone grows up watching Disney classics, regardless of generation. But I will admit I've never heard of The Cat from Outer Space.

I think when I started looking at the expiry date before I buy a bread...that was a dead giveaway
I see that more than half the items were deleted per viewer votes. I assume the ones I wasn’t too old to relate to were among them.
Age is a weird thing. I'm 22 and extremely socially inept autistic. I'll see people talking about work, college, marriage, kids and feel like they are so much older than me, but often they're younger or just 2 or 3 years older. And then in the same breath they talked about being engaged they will say something that feels so naive I can't believe this person is my age.
Making my grandchildren watch APOLLO 13 to show how going to the moon was actually so incredible… got there on knobs and toggles and no digital/computers
A couple years ago I went to a goodwill store and was browsing, found a few things for my crafts and was at the counter when the gal said to me 'any discounts??' I glanced up and she said 'ahh senior discount, any more??' I left everything on the counter and walked out. Got in my car and started to cry!!. Reality hit and I walked back in and said ' yeah i will take it....senior discount.' I had just turned 65 and that was my first hint of reality!!
Years ago i remember this one commercial for a dvr box where 1 kid who was like 1-2 years older said to her younger sis "when i was your age we only could record 2 shows at once not 3". XD i got SO mad at it like "girl when i was YOUR age we recorded ONE show on a black tape box the quality was piss n it lasted a yr at most. The first box to record tv live was freaking sorcery! N you still could only record one thing n it was always parents shows"
Im at that age a kid asked what a VHS was..and i fear soon will get to the point ppl will ask what a dvd is....i also remember when TVO first came out how ground breaking it was....im 27 i feel old xD
My "now I'm old" moment came when, about 20 years ago, I was working at a store that sold media and collectibles and such and I had two teachers come in who wanted a poster they could cut the face out of for a pie in the face booth. "I have *the perfect* thing!" and I take them to our mounted posters and proudly display the one we have of Curly, from the 3 Stooges. The one looks at me and goes "Our kids would have no idea who he is." Me: "Now I feel old." I don't think the (older than me) teachers appreciated that remark very much. That, and they were looking to have a poster *donated* to their carnival rather than, y'know, buying something from the store.

My mother doesn't agree with me if i am saying, i am old. Even I am actually 21 y.o, but my childhood really makes me feel like in heaven because no stress for social media.
I have posted this before on a similar thread, but I was talking to my niece a while ago about computers and school, I told her that we didn't have computers to google answers and she replied with - "oh yes, they had slates and chalk in your day, didn't they?" - I'm 49 now!
I was born in 1996. I'm turning 26 this year. I have siblings that were born in the late 80s. I can relate to most of this list. I shouldn't feel old at 26. What's happening?

40 years old in a few weeks and currently on holiday. Very excited / proud that we went OUT for dinner after 8pm and stayed up after midnight!! But did still walk passed most of the bars and restaurants because they were "too loud" or "busy". We just wanted peace and quiet, with decent food, a nice atmosphere and as few other humans as possible. We're officially old. But had a lovely evening!
A few months ago, I (only 43) had to show a kid how the gas pump worked. He kept hitting the octane number. After the fifth punch I told him, "You have to lift the handle cradle. It's old school." He lifted it, and pleasantly chuffed, said, "Thank you, sir!" And I was instantly 70 years old.

Load More Replies... Honestly, any of these that start with “remember when?” and then show computers or cell phones seem silly to my old self. Those all still feel new to me! I still remember when a cordless landline phone felt like future tech. I called a friend from it and told him I was in the front yard. He was blown away. And we didn’t even keep the phone. It was a gift for my grandparents, and my mom wanted me to test it first since she didn’t trust the technology!
My official first “I feel old” moment happened way back in 1997, when my son was 6 years old. We had an old stereo system that had a record player. I still owned a few albums, but never played them, because it was missing the needle. I finally found one in an old thrift shop and set about putting it to use. After listening to the first side, I told my son to flip it over to the other side. Being a child who only knew CD’s, he exclaimed, “It has music on both sides?!! Cool!!!” (This kid is 30 now, which officially makes me ancient!)

I can't remember I was this busy with proving other people are old when I was a kid. Do kids these days think they don't age or something? I remember telling my husband that smart phones were just a passing fad because they were so sensitive they might not stay off if you put them in your purse or pocket and that no one looks at the internet enough to justify those charges.
I was in college with a smartphone before the iPod existed. Windows CE was as bad as anyone said but it was pretty rad when I visited Kansas and realized the fields all had free WiFi and in 2002 I could surf the internet on the go like most people take for granted now.

No doubt! I turned 40 last August, and my (now husband) and I went on our honeymoon in January to Puerto Rico. There was all kinds of partying and clubbing and we were like Nah, let's grab a glass of wine and sit on the beach and just cuddle and listen to the waves. No crazy drunkeness or anything. And we too stayed up late cuz you know ... honeymoon special occasion lol.
It's just hit me that I'm the same age my late mother was when she was busy having her first Year from Hell, with a husband (my dad) battling cancer while her father (my grandfather) passed away from a heart attack. I thought she was so old back then. Now I'm THAT age, though it's been eighteen years since *I* lost MY dad and six years since I lost my mom. That makes me feel ancient.
