30 Things That Unnoticeably Got Deleted From Our Reality, As Pointed Out By Folks In This Online Group
Interview With AuthorLife is a very fast-paced thing.
One day you’re writing on stones and hunting mammoths, and the next, you’re decompressing from your 9 to 5 by lounging on the couch and watching viral cat videos. The point is – everything changes in a blink of an eye, and sometimes, keeping up with the world simply becomes an impossible task.
“What quietly went away without anyone noticing?” – this web user turned to one of Reddit’s most thought-provoking communities, encouraging its members to share examples of things that were once popular but have since disappeared. The thread garnered nearly 45K likes as well as 44K comments containing some pretty intriguing responses.
Before we continue with the article, let’s hear from the author himself! “I asked that question because I’m always fascinated by that moment when something pops into your head that you haven’t thought about in ages, and it sorta takes you back in time for a second and makes you wonder where it went,” u/lukiiiiii said when Bored Panda pondered about the inspiration behind the post. We then invited the netizen to answer his own question, and he responded with: “My answer would have been maybe something like Kanye West or other ‘controversial figures’ that make headlines for a while and then disappear from the news cycle.”
Now, without further ado, pull your chair closer, and let’s begin!

Acid Rain.
It was a huge environmental issue in the late 70s thru the early 90s. Rain was acidic and damaged fertile areas among other things.
In the US there was much research done and eventually industrial regulations were put into place. Companies were allowed to decide what approach they chose to take as long as the results showed the appropriate amount of reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions.
Unfortunately, positive news doesn't sell, so news outlets did not do justice to reporting this success. As we went into the 2000s hardly anyone remembered what was done.
Well, I was recently wondering why we never hear about acid rain anymore. But it was a fleeting thought in a moment where I did not have time to search the internet. However, it is an interesting thought. I remember seeing forests destroyed by acid rain as a kid, it certainly made a lasting impression!
I have vivid memories of a car lot selling deeply discounted acid-rain damaged vehicles.
Load More Replies...It wasn't just in the USA that research was done into acid rain. It happened in many countries, and the results were the same - governments legislated to reduce emissions. This resulted in less acid rain, and the forests/farm land started recovering.
With this and the CFCs, science and governments worldwide worked together and did something about it. Why does that not still happen??
Load More Replies...In the 1990s there was a lot of attention on the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. When it was realised CFCs were causing the damage governments legislated, and the hole has gradually been repairing itself. However some of the chemicals can last for 50 to 100 years, and it is going to take quite a few decades before the damage has been reversed. But, it is happening.
Remember March 2020 when cities closed down? The environmental impact was enormous (for the better). Too bad we went right back to killing our planet. If only there were technologies that companies could employ to make themselves less harmful to the earth...
Our rainwater isn't potable anymore, though. I always wonder why no one's talking about that - it's a huge deal.
It IS a huge deal. My son just made a presentation on this very thing in science class.
Load More Replies...I know about this and have told my children about it as an example of awareness and activism actually working. Same with the ozone hole (which is slowly healing). You can’t just give up because it seems like a big problem… climate change can be addressed too but only if we act.
It's no longer the problem it once was thanks to the clean air act and the epa. However if repukes ever get their way, we'll see it again
When I was a kid I was so scared of acid rain. I thought it was corrosive chemicals raining down other than water. Never came across it, though and haven't heard about it since.
Well, it was chemicals IN the rainwater, so you weren't wrong. I remember my mum telling me not to drink the rain (as a kid) because the air over Dublin was so dirty.
Load More Replies...I go by AcidRaynne in some circles. People don't even get it anymore. I'm glad
Why can't they put such regulations on these huge corporations that contribute to global warming? There is more than enough research to elicit action, yet here we are. It seems like companies now have the option to reduce or not reduce the amount of toxic pollutants they produce. It should be mandatory worldwide.
Actual toys in cereal boxes and cracker jack boxes.
Especially that they are all totally overweight. I wish that's' how they really marketed these.
Load More Replies...What I remember is reading the back of the cereal box. The toys were so crappy. Except that boat that ran using baking soda. cereal-sub...963284.jpg
They even used to put things inside the laundry powder boxes, a fake pearl in the Prell shampoo, etc
Was excited to get a towel once when I was a kid.
Load More Replies...oh yeah i wish i could open a toy from cereal instead of just a digital code to a giveaway :/
Not only toys in cereal or Cracker Jack, but laundry detergent used to contain washcloths and small towels (my personal favorite was a Huckleberry Hound washcloth) or small drinking glasses. We couldn't wait to open the packages.
Glad this b******t thing is over. Mother earth does not need more waste plastic.
politicians feeling ashamed when theyre caught lying
Please...average citizens on social media don't even care when they're called out on blatant lies/hypocrisy. What makes you think politicians would do any better? LOL
You don't think that politicians should be held to a higher standard than your average person?
Load More Replies...Thank you, Trump, for lowering the bar to the ground! Yes, Santos, I'm talking about you!
Just stop it. Our government has been in decline since JFK died. Trump was just one more manifestation.
Load More Replies...A certain President made it OK to not be ashamed by abominable behavior.
Recently watched the Gary Hart movie (with Hugh Jackman). I remember hearing about this HUGE scandal at the time and not really knowing much about it, but it ruined his chances for president. Nowadays, that would be tame!
The politicians aren't ashamed... they are just embarrassed that they were caught
yes! i know that people like to think that the rise of trumpism is the cause of this but it wasn't. politicians were doing prior to his popularity and most would deny then be embarassed only to later perform some mea culpa publicly. however, trumpism did normalize this kind of behavior. what i have wondered is that since there are more older people (40+...yeah, yeah...not really old i guess - let's just say "mature" for those that think i am being snarky about age) if we got new blood into the house and senate would this change. i would like to think so but, then again, there is always the possibility that newer/younger politicians would feel invulnerable because of their predecessors getting away with it for years.
George Santos and Lauren Boebert are in their early/mid 30s. So yeah, younger isn't going to mean better. I'm not sure how old you are, but even 40s is pretty young. When I was growing up in the 80s/90s, it seemed (and I could be wrong, might just be my perception) that the average age of congress was 60-65. Unfortunately, as we can see from people like Gaetz (he's actually 40, but that's still young for congress) and Boebert, if we get young congress people, we just wind up with immature monsters rather than stodgy old monsters. There's an old saying that anyone who wants political power shouldn't have political power. Obviously, that's an oversimplification, but maybe it should more accurately be more like those who have the desire AND the money to pursue political power shouldn't be allowed to. The same way that police powers attract a certain kind of bully, political power also attracts its own form of horrible creature.
Load More Replies...At least they used to pretend to be contrite, even if it was all an act.
Load More Replies...They don't give two f***s about us... they have pension for life, best healthcare for life, best life insurance for life.. it's a great racket if you can get in! And yet we have such fan boys / girls!! What the flying hell! Good on Santos or what ever the hell his name is... he's a vote for the "R" and no way to get that lying sack of s**t out! He'll be set for life!! WOW!!!!! Hey! I'm a doctor, I'm a lawyer, I'm a movie star, I'm an astronaut and I own this bar... I would lie to you for your... (love) VOTE!!!
Ownership. We used to pay money and then the thing actually belonged to us. Now everything is rented or leased. Everything is sold "as a service". Music as a service. Movies as a service. Software as a service. Even printer ink as a service.
We spend and spend and in the end we hold nothing in our hands.
edit: You can also subscribe to clothes. Wear new clothes every month but never own them. You can also subscribe to cars. Clothes as a service, cars as a service.
Part of the trend where capital is held in fewer and fewer hands while debt is carried on more and more backs
I have streaming services, but I also collect DVDs and Blu-ray discs when they are on sale, because one day the streaming services may die, or HBO Max may purge Looney Tunes... Just for a random example.
This is nothing new, mostly you can still choose to own many of these things just like you used to, it's just that you've been brainwashed into thinking that you _need_ all these things but you can't afford to buy them.
Not always true; many things can only be leased or subscribed these days. I’d much rather pay $50 for something once than $50 a year, every year for eternity… surely you can see how we’re all being screwed by this.
Load More Replies...That makes me wish there was a toilet paper subscription and I could return the product at the end of the contract.
Unusual concept - me wonders what prompted that thought...
Load More Replies...I actually prefer this in some ways. How many times did my parents buy a new movie for $15 only to watch it once?
It also reduces waste. We really don't need to own that much stuff.
Load More Replies...Also if you don't participate in this system people think you are weird. I still have CDs and DVDs. I go to thrift stores for my clothes and home items. I keep my cell phone for 5+ years. I don't spend and spend and spend and people think I am weird or they think I am poor!
And "landowners" don't actually "own" land--stop paying property taxes and the government or bank will put a lien out. It's always belonged to them and it always will.
The American dream a lie. Nobody owns s**t in this hypocrite country that will steal your own home
Load More Replies...IKR! I commented above - I'm treasuring my CS6 as that's the last stand-alone Adobe package. I got it for $800 back in the day. Nowadays the same package costs $60/month without discount - so in a year you pay almost as much as you used to pay to install the suite, only after a year you still do not own it and will continue to pay.
Load More Replies...It's not all bad though. My netflix subscription for a month costs as much as 1 DVD. My spotify subscription per month costs half the price of 1 CD. And no scratched or damaged CDs or DVDs to worry about. Some of these services give you a whoooole lot more bang for your buck than buying and owning something.
Provided you don't mind that Spotify is paying your favourite artists jackfuck.

Water beds.
another user added:
Used to have one. Nothing like forgetting to turn on the heater an hour before bed in the middle of winter.
You don't turn the heater on and off; you leave it on all the time like a hot tub or heated pool. When I got a waterbed I had to sleep in the living room the first night because it took a day for the bed to heat the water enough for me to not be freezing.
I was stupid and couldn’t wait, so I slept on a cold bed all night. It took a long time to heat up. No way turning the heater on an hour before going to bed would make a difference, an electric blanket, yes, waterbed, no.
Load More Replies...I had one and never touched the settings once they were like we wanted. We went through an earthquake and didn't feel it but found the baby sleeping soundly on the floor (no damage done). I have a great picture too with two of my children on it. 1992-02-17...1e3962.jpg
I had a waterbed as a teenager. It was on a platform and used regular sheets. When it was made up it looked like a regular bed. I loved it most of the time. Didn't like it when I was sick or trying to do my homework. One movement and books and papers would start falling on the floor. Our dog loved it though because it was warm!
TIL that waterbeds have heaters. Now I'm wondering about "boil in the bed" meals for cannibals.
I guess if you never had one, you would never think about.
Load More Replies...Would love to have a water bed, but I have cats. I remember one of my older brothers had one back in the seventies. Then he got a cat. Waterbeds and cats do NOT mix.
I had a waterbed in the mid 80's and my cats were on it all the time. Maybe they got better? Or my cats were better behaved. lol
Load More Replies...That comment makes no sense. The heater works with a thermostat. You leave it on all the time. And if your bed is cold, much like a hot tub, it will take hours or even a day to warm up.
Who turns the heater off??? I miss mine. Last one I had was tubes inside a mattress so you could decide how firm you wanted both sides.
Me too! I rock myself to sleep with the waves and never wake up to my back hurting.

When you turn off the TV, how the image would shrink to a dot before slowly fading away.
That was only present on CRT (cathode ray rube) TVs, and nobody makes CRT TVs anymore since L.E.D. and Plasma are vastly superior. It was pretty cool though 😎
and don't forget dragging your feet across the carpet and touching the crt screen to get a static shock, or getting one from adjusting the tin foil rabbit ears

And playing the Star Spangled Banner just before they went off the air.
Load More Replies...When our three TV stations went off the air at 1:00 AM, the National Anthem would play to a film of the Blue Angels, then a test pattern would appear and "buzz" till the stations came back on the air in the morning!
I gotta know more. When did they come back on? Would the anthem loop? Were they not freaking out about dead air?
Load More Replies...Yeah, and no remote to use but get up & turn the TV on/off, volume up/down
My sisters tried to convince me that was an elf in the TV watching me and you could see his eye when the TV was turning off... I didn't believe it, so I started coming up with my own idea of who's eye that is, which were actually far less believable in retrospect...
The picture wouldn't come on right away. Everything had to warm up first.
The residual glow and telltale static crackle meant that you couldn't just switch it off and pretend to have been sleeping when you heard your parents coming down the hall.
There are some interesting YT videos that show how the Zenith TVs were made in the 1950s. Very technical process! Interesting even for a layperson to see.

The Sears Wishbook
When my mom was young, she was born in 1930, when the Sears & Robuck catalog came my grandmother would ask her and her sisters which dress they would like and then sew it for them.
My dad told me when he was young, he and his brothers used to take my grannie's S&R catalog and secretly gawk at the women's underwear and bra sections. LOL
Load More Replies...We were a JC Penny wish book home. I remember eagerly waiting for it and then spending hours going through it circling and initialing everything I wanted
Loved this. It would come around Sept/Aug. I would get busy with a pen and paper and go through the toy section picking out all the things I wanted. wishbook-7...0965ac.jpg
The turned-down corners were hints for my parents gifting endeavors. :)
Load More Replies...Sears HOUSES. I live in one that was purchased from Sears catalog, arrived in flat packs, by train. Community would help build the family's home. Many houses in my area are Sears homes.
Wish we could buy tiny houses like that today. 84 Lumber (American hardware store brand) still does this. You can choose from their websites.
Load More Replies...Sears should have been Amazon. They had the catalogue and distribution centers already set up to serve it. They delivered everything from books and food to tools and whole houses. In 1984 - 12 years before Amazon came around, it launched Prodigy with IBM as an online service to sell its stuff from the catalogue and were the first service to use GUI. In 1990, they had 600,00 customers buying stuff online. They were Amazon before browsers existed. Then in 1993, they decided to get out of the catalogue business and just focus on retail stores. They completely gave away the one advantage they had over Walmart and left a void that Amazon eventually filled.
You can thank Wall Street for Sears' downfall. Sold off the best assets and left the unprofitable parts. We used to buy all our appliances at Sears, but in recent years the service deteriorated. I tried to buy a washer/dryer three times in one day and the order got messed up and canceled. Had to go to Lowe's instead.
Load More Replies...Man, I miss all of the wishbooks. We always received 2 or 3 thick full color catalogs each year and they became Christmas wishbooks. I remember circling things and showing my parents. Things have certainly changed.
Sears is a sad story. They were perfectly poised for online shopping. Already had the distribution/ shipping set up, people were used to getting products by mail. All they had to do was switch from paper catalog/ forms to online ordering. What a missed oppurtunity.
The.company is run by a fellow with conflicting interests who benefits from each store closes. He buys and resells the empty stores. I gave up on Sears when our local store closed (we bought there often) but the online pricing was all over the place. I bought a tool from another store for $150 and the identical Sears tool - also made in China - was $750. If I have to price check everything I look at Sears to prevent being gouged on prices it isn't worth my time. I wish Sears had become Amazon before Amazon!
Load More Replies...When I was overseas in the military, every year there was a wild time on base when it was announced that the Sears Xmas catalogs had arrived at the base Post Office. My daughter, now 46, would spend hours going through it to make up her wish list.
Wishbooks! Whole books just for kids! We'd mark our choices by writing our names next to the item we wanted. It was so exciting when they came out every Christmas!
Taco Bell used to have a chihuahua as their mascot. Little dude just disappeared one day and anyone born after 2000 probably doesn't even know what I am talking about.
I still have and proudly wear my "Here Lizard Lizard Lizard" T-Shirt when Taco Bell did the promotion with Godzilla.
Yet to this very day I still see people with the nodding-head chihuahua on the dashboard of their car (myself included)
Gidget (February 7, 1994 – July 21, 2009) and was voiced by Carlos Alazraqui who you may know from Rocko's Modern Life or Reno 911.
They stopped using it because pet stores were swamped with people asking for the Taco Bell dog
I think people have noticed now but at the time, nobody noticed it was happening: 24 hour stores. I live in a major city and we don’t have a single 24 hour grocery store ever since the pandemic.
Yeah I live in a 24 hour city and NOTHING is 24hr anymore. I feel terrible for those who work overnight and can't do things like grocery shop during their normal hours.
When I was working at my first job, starting in 1979, not only grocery stores, but gas stations too, all closed at 11pm—-the same time I got off work. I worked at an airport, which back then was in the middle of the boondocks. Miles from anywhere. Back then, there weren’t a lot of convenience stores, at least not where I was living. Really rough when you misjudge how much gas is left in your tank on a day you were running late and didn’t stop to fill it before going to work. No cellphones back then either, so I couldn’t call anybody to bring me a gallon in a gas can either. Believe me, that was a real white knuckle drive home. Practically on fumes. Luckily, there was a station close to home, so I made damn sure to fill up the next day. Oh, and gas was about 75 cents a gallon back then. I could fill my tank for less than $10. Oddly, according to the Inflation Calculator, 75 cents a gallon is equivalent to $5.66 a gallon today. So technically gas was MORE expensive back then. Weird, huh?
Load More Replies...And actually more places are 24/7 than for example 10 years ago
Load More Replies...Weird. My local grocery store is still 24 hrs. As is the pharmacy, though at night you have to use a call box.
We have a grocer, Harris Teeter, here that is also open for 24 hours...guess it depends on the area...
Load More Replies...I was going to suggest that my local Tesco is still 24 hour, but looking at its opening hours online, it is now 6am-12midnight Mon-Sat, and 10am-4pm Sun. So that one really did creep in without my noticing!
It never was open 24 hours on a Sunday, because of Sunday trading laws. Though it may have relaxed a little over the pandemic.
Load More Replies...Never really been a thing in Australia, only real 24hrs thing would be petrol stations
We actually never had those in Europe (except for gas stations). It's a nice thing for the employees there so nobody has to stay away at night, or risk having the store robbed in the dark.
I live in Europe. There are indeed 24 hour grocery stores, pharmacies and weirdly flower shops in my medium sized city
Load More Replies...Perhaps the ability to shop online has contributed to this, click and collect and deliveries. Being able to swing by the shop on the way home and not having to spend hours trapsing a store certainly make it easier for someone working outside 9-5 hours.
Except the likelyhood of it being delivered, and stolen while we're either asleep or at work is great.
Load More Replies...Noticed a sign on Walmart the other day - they are changing their hours to 8am-7pm next month.
There are certainly several where I live still. But I don’t think I’ve gone out in the middle of the night since my son was an infant. The first couple months he was born there was no morning or night. It was baby asleep, baby awake, feed, diaper, play, repeat on 2-4 hour cycles. Before he was born we would randomly go grocery shopping at 2 am and stuff.
Panama papers
another user added:
They actually still have impact to this very day, and lots of people noticed!
But as a summary, here are some things that happened:
After mass protests, the Prime Minister of Iceland was forced to resign, along with many other members of the ruling party.
After mass protests, the President of Pakistan was forced to resign, along with many other members of the ruling party.
Worldwide, hundreds of people – many rich and powerful – were arrested. Billions in stolen assets were returned to the people.
82 countries changed their laws to crack down on the wealth hoarding the papers revealed.
Wasn't the woman behind releasing this murdered? Am I thinking of something else maybe?
They were allegedly the main reason that the Tory (UK) Government pushed so hard for Brexit. The EU were going to crack down on the people named, and the PM didn't want his mates being arrested.
They were launched a few months before the Brexit votum. I suspect this was done intentionally, to make the British prime minister look foolish.
And the next 3 still looked/look foolish too. Boris the buffoon.
Load More Replies...If you live in a country that frowns upon corruption then you'll have heard about some of your politicians being arrested or at least having to resign. If you live in a corrupt country then you won't have heard a thing about it. Thinking of US and UK in particular. Extremely corrupt countries but as they don't so anything about it the perception is that it doesn't exist..
https://www.transparency.org/en/cpi/2021/index/gbr Here's the world corruption index. I'd hardly describe the UK as "extremely corrupt" by comparison to many other countries.
Load More Replies...It was the prime minister of Pakistan, he was convicted by courts then he resigned.
I remember that David Cameron''s name was also involved. A few months later, he lost his Brexit gamble. It certainly didn't add to his credibility.
82 countries cracked down on wealth hoarding?! too bad the US wasn't one of them!
Service clubs. e.g. the Rotary, the Lions, the Shriners.
Oh, they're still around. But a common complaint among them is they've got no members under 70 and no new members are lining up to get in.
EDIT: The #1 question seems to be, "What the hell are these, anyways?"
They're social clubs with the primary objective to be doing projects to better the community. They might raise money to build a new playground, a new hospital, for scholarships, stuff like that.
They raise money for stuff.
Shriners are still out there helping kids. Bonus, they wear fantastic fez hats and ride those tiny cars in parades! shriners-6...2c8bde.jpg
Dad was leader of Shrine Band, and a Jester. Their motto: mirth is king. I'd laugh so hard I couldn't stand... and the pranks they'd play on each other! They also use those pranks to raise mind boggling amounts of money for their children's hospitals... kids are treated free.

Load More Replies...I was in Rotary in my late 30s and early 40s as a member and board member of our philanthropic board. One of only 4 women and only 3 of us under 60. They do a lot of great work in the community and worldwide but could not stop calling everyone gentleman and adapt to changing times. I finally quit. Expensive and not very welcoming of new ideas.
Could this be a regional thing? about 25% of our members are women, our chairman is a woman, our district governor is a woman and the international president is a woman. We also adress each other by first name or collectively as 'friends'

I did rotary for about 5-6 years or so but COVID kind of killed it for me. Being in my 30s i was fairly young. There were several others younger than me in that particular club of about 35 members though. I loved the camaraderie, service projects, and fundraisers. Usually the people you meet are wonderful caring and involved in the community. We had weekly guests that talked about a variety of topics such as conservation, local business owners, authors, artists, celebrities etc. Very interesting. You learn a lot about your community by being in the clubs. I miss it.
Come back! You can do online/face to face/hybrid - whatever suits
Load More Replies...My mom is convinced the Rotary club is super secretive and thinks that means they're satanic. That woman, I swear.
As a Rotarian, I can tell you this is 100% true. I'm just shy of 40 and I'm considerably younger that most in my club. Trying to explain Rotary to others can be disheartening - some think it's a gimmick or scam.
Rotary club is one of the major benefactors of the school I work in. They do amazing work within the community but yes all members are over 70yrs
Kiwanas!!! I did Key Club through them in high school!! Love em!!!
Telephone books
This is so funny! After 20 years of no phone book, guess what showed up at our front door last week? A Yellow Page Phone Book! Lol

Load More Replies...My parents are in their 70s and have had the same number since 1974. I have to admit that it is kinda comforting.
My brother bought the family farm and still has the same landline number my paternal grandparents had since before I was born (over 50 years!)
Load More Replies...It's worth having one hooked up to the jack even if you have no service, because it will still dial 911. Landline service is usually still up even if the power is out
Yep we have one because it’s on our internet plan so why not. And our toddler knows how to call 911 on it in case of an emergency.
Load More Replies...I have one, with a phone and an answering machine on it. I am not over 60. They main thing with them is that they will work in a powercut provided that the exchange has power. At some point we will get switched to IP phones, and in order to use those in a powercut you will need to have a UPS on both the phone and your router. Mobiles may work if the mast still has power, but the battery in my phone only lasts 2 days max, which considering my MIL recently had a powercut that lasted nearly 3 days, isn't going to work for very long.
We have to have one. My wife is an on call midwife, so we need the reliability in case her mobile signal is rubbish (rural Wales).
I have one, and it's still analog. I live in South Florida, and after a hurricane this is the only way to ensure a working phone. The phone company tries like heck to get me to "upgrade" to a digital line, but those go out with the power, so no point.
I live in a tiny town. The phone company is literally owned by a family, and they don't provide internet service unless you pay for a landline. We hadn't had a landline in 15+ yrs and now are paying for one, so my spouse bought phones for the house. Not sure why. I don't even know the phone number!
Us too. It is $15 a month. We bought a cordless to have because, why not, the first time it was taken from its cradle it got lost. Noone has bothered to look for it. I do not even know the phone number. It plugs into the router.
Load More Replies...i was amused by this post. my dad is 80 and he got rid of his landline. i, however, still have one as well as a cell phone. have thought about getting rid of the landline but i have so many professionals who have my landline number that i fear i would forget a few to notify.

Me too. I still have that Underwood. Can't find ribbons, but it's a cool thing to have.

They used to put a cardboard rectangle in front of us that had two holes so you could put your hands inside where the keyboard was. There was a picture of the keyboard on top of the box to help you out. That way you were forced to learn to type without looking at the actual keyboard. Did anybody else ever have to deal with this?
We lifted the cover of the machine, slid in piece of typing paper to cover our hands. It was a definite improvement over my eagle-eyed teacher that would smack our hands with a ruler if she caught us looking at keys.

Facebook poke wars
I think you also used to be able to "throw a sheep" or something like that
Does any one, other than me, remember the "Honesty Box" feature on the very early FB?
How my boyfriend and I flirted before we actually hung out. That was over 13 years ago and now we have 2 kids together 🤣
There used to be a feature in the VERY early Facebook...like 2009...when you still needed a ".edu" email address (it was only open to enrolled college students at that time) to sign up.....they had this feature called a "poke". You just went to someone's page, and hit "Poke *insert friends name*" and it would send them something saying "You have been poked by *your name*" then it would give you the option of "poking" them back. This could go on....for a while LOL. It was just a fun and stupid thing in the early iteration of Facebook. The back and forth became known as a "poke war"...
Load More Replies...I still have two active poke wars that have both been going on for years.

Flash mobs
Come on, we were all secretly dreaming about having a flash mob proposal at the mall! Dreaming like in " worst dream ever" but still.😋
Load More Replies...I loved flash mobs. It was a great way to provide free entertainment to a random crowd.
Best flash mob I’ve ever seen was the one the Black Eyed Peas put on in Chicago with 20,000 people to surprise Oprah. Seriously, Google it and I dare you to not smile and be blown away!
Load More Replies...This was such an awkward yet pure expression of random joy… I don’t miss them per se, but I miss the zeitgeist that produced them. The pandemic, and the years leading up to it, stole that joy from us.
Ugh! They were awful! And every sodding twat in a corporate firm decided to do one at their office Christmas party. Everyone knows what you're up to, Neil! And you can't dance. Sod off.

I think I got one of these in my "old technology" box. With my Gameboy and undying Nokia.
Free samples. I used to see free sample standes every time I went to a store, now they are gone.
I now realize ( from all the comments ) that Costco apparently still has them.
Publix(grocery chain in Southeast US) has them. They were just doing wine samples at the one near my house the other day.
They are coming back. Pandemic kind of did a number on them. Free samples is a huge marketing tool, so it wouldn't simply die.
The net neutrality thingy
Companies who provided internet wanted to make the sites that were associated with them free or cheap to access for users of their services while adding higher costs to those who weren't for users on limited data plans That would have killed the internet as we know it. But all over the world judges decided that this was illegal because it would skewe free trade. Companies can still sell limited data plans, but they can't make exceptions for companies who pay extra coin. When your data is used up, the whole internet gets either slowed down or becomes inaccessible, but the internet providers cannot make deals with huge websites to except them from this.

The American Chestnut Tree. We sing “chestnuts roasting over an open fire” every year and yet never question why we have no chestnuts. All the chestnut trees are dead is why, you see.
I believe they've bred them with other blight resistant chestnuts, so they are a little diff from the "originals"
Load More Replies...To my knowledge, there are still chestnut trees - but what they produce apparently don't taste the same as the trees that were killed off by blight years ago. Apparently those nuts were amazing and the ones sold in the store are... chewy. Not sure if they will ever be able to be brought back but maybe someday we'll have a Dolly Chestnut back from the grave.
There was a blight that killed most of them many years ago. That's why they are either rare or nonexistent in some parts of the country now.
"Returning after the war had blown over, he caught the same disease that was killing off the chestnut trees in those years, and passed away. It was the only case in history where a tree doctor had to be called in to spray a person, and our family had felt it very keenly; nobody else in the United States caught the blight." James Thurber - My Life & Hard Times
Plenty in Oregon too! Had a huge one at my old house- it's still there. We had people combing our yard for the nuts every year, it was weird to look out the window and see random people. The tree is over 100 years old.
probably not american chestnut. more likely a horse chestnut.

Planking
This is something that has been rediscovered over and over again. Unsurprisingly, people like to lay down and think its funny doing it weird places. It often gets the same name. In early 80s, we started planking in my High School in Ohio. First time the gym teacher saw us doing it, she yelled at us to stop planking. She'd done it when she was in school in the 60s. Popped up again in the late 90s starting in England. Popped up again 10 years ago.
Huh. That’s not what I personally call planking, this would be “lying down face plant” or something. I have in other words misunderstood the word “planking” all my life, that’s a bit embarrassing.
Yeah, I thought it was more like a yoga pose, where you're up on your hands, or at least elbows. The people I've seen doing it (outside of a yoga class) were having a contest to see who could hold the pose longest
Load More Replies...People realized movement is much more effective at burning calories than lying still.

3D TVs
Years ago I had a TV with 3D capability, and it came with a couple pairs of the premium 3D eyeglasses, but I didn't watch a single thing in 3D the entire time I had it lol
A friend of mine had one. The only thing I ever managed to watch on it in 3D was The Wizard of Oz, which was pretty good in that format.
Load More Replies...A waste of time for many people who, like me, have eyes that can't perceive these images as 3-D. I have really poor depth perception at the best of times and going to see 3-D movies was awful. It looked like there was something wrong with the colour and when I wore the glasses I saw a normal 2-D film..
I feel your pain. I can't see them either. Or those little "Stare at the image until you blind yourself to see another image" photos.
Load More Replies...Philistines! I have a big 3d tv (even paid for it to be repaired) and will buy a 3d projector later this year. Pixar, Stolp-Motion and Action Movies look great; done properly, 3D is an art form in it's own right.
I just sold my 2016 model 3D TV (last year they were made) for $1200. These are are very valuable to enthusiasts
I have a mess of 3D Blu-Ray discs and 2 3D players but not the TV! I did get to see Avatar on a friend's set though.
I had one and special glasses so we could watch all 3 of the 3d movies out there
Google+
I LOVED MY WINDOWS PHONE!!!! I have had MANY phones, starting with the Motorola 8500X (you had to have big pockets back then!) The Windows phone was still the best phone I had and had so many useful features that others took years to copy. (iphone the worst phone I have ever had!)
Load More Replies...What was Google +? I can't remember, I have memory problems it's not that I'm too young to remember :P
Hell no, Google+ didn't just quietly die. Tech Media were all about it for a week.
It was some weird Yahoo!Groups that was supposed to compete with Facebook and yet now there is Mastodon. The biggest problem with it was how they promoted it by forcing you to have an account to use other Google services for a while.
Load More Replies...It was another Google experiment that now resides in the Google Graveyard. I actually used it for a bit.
The word "Cyberspace"
Tesla has a "cyber truck", no idea what makes it "cyber" though, sounds like Elon was trying to hard to sound futuristic.
Cyber Truck and it’s font. It’s a play off of Cyber Punk, (which was based of a 1980’s role playing game and recent video games similar to Dungeons and Dragons but in a future where people modify and themselves with open and black market cybernetic hardware and software to give them upgraded abilities.) the truck itself looks like a post apocalyptic/futuristic video game armored vehicle one might see in Cyber Punk.

Ring tones. Jay Z said no more and they were done.
What is everyone talking about? I still just cut out whichever part of the song I want to use, load it onto my phone and select it as ringtone.
I have a free app that does ring tones super easy. I currently have a BTS ring tone for general calls and then I customized ring tones for family members and friends. So even if I don't have my phone on me, I hear which ring tone it is and know who is calling without having to look. It may be old school but I love it.
What? I have all my people in my contacts set to different ringtones I made with an app. I love it - I know who's calling immediately.
Downloaded a ringtone through Zedge. Deleted Zedge. Still have the ringtone. Bombastic Orthodox Russian will wake you out of a dead sleep to answer your phone. (It's God-Shattering Star. Look it up. You will not regret it.)
I haven't needed them since I got an iphone because I keep it on silent. Do not ever want to take a call. Thanks.
I miss them. That one could assign a music or sound snippet most associated with a caller was a blessing. Though letting them find out that their ring-tone on your phone is "They're Coming to Take Me Away! Ha-Ha!" could be embarrassing.

Oh yeah, I forgot about SoBe. I used to get it because I liked the lizard on the bottle lol. Also, remember Surge (citrus cola) and Jolt (double the caffeine)?
Now we just have 900 different kinds of energy drinks and weird brews of espresso-like things. And kombuchas for some reason. Meh.
Load More Replies...I want to know WTF happened to my Salsa Verde Doritos.
I'm so freaking mad about this one! Back in the early-to-mid 90s, you could only find SV Doritos in select regions (I was lucky in Massachusetts), then, to my great joy, they were everywhere for over a decade, only to break my heart and disappear. The Corporate Overlords expect me to be happy with the Sweet Chili flavor... *Cries while trying to find joy in the purple bag* ...IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!!!
Maybe this is because of where you live? Because I'm in texas and we buy them all the time. They're the only Doritos I like.
Im still mad about the salsa verde taco bell sauce packets discontinued several years back. Another is the original dill pickle potato chips that had the green dill specks in them.

Yeah he’s continued to his more abstract, conceptual sound. Is he still kicking’ around Melbourne?
