As a high school math teacher for over 25 years, I do it. I also use this method to teach multiplication to students who have never been able to memorize their "times tables." One of the core ideas in teaching is to make connections going from the known to the unknown. It makes sense when you frame thinking in terms of neural pathways.

This is exactly why I struggled with math after Algebra II. This is how my brain works but they forced me to write out these dumb equations to do something I did in my head in a microsecond.

7 + 3 = 10. 10+ the other 3 = 13

New math!

6 + 6 = 12. Plus one more is 13.

I do both, to make sure they have the same results.

NO!! It should be 6+6 -1

√(576)=24. 24 is 6x4. That means 6x4/2, or 6x2, must be 12. Which means 6+6=12. Which must mean 1+6+6=13. Which means 7+6=13. Am I understanding this correctly?

7+3=10 and after you subtract 3 from 6 you have 3 left over so you have to add 3 to the sum of 7+3 so you have 13
