There are a number of things most of us learned about growing up that, as it turns out, were not nearly as mysterious as they sounded. Take, for example, the Bermuda Triangle, which, as it turns out, isn’t nearly as dangerous as sensationalists love to make it out to be. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things out there that are still unknown to this day.

Someone asked “if you could know the truth behind one unexplainable mystery, which one would you choose?” and people described what they would love to know. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote the ones you also find engaging and be sure to share your own examples in the comments below.

In addition to recorded history, we also have archaeology. Archaeology is the science of things remaining from the past. It is based on evidence. Sometimes, in fact, most of the time, we don't have all the evidence, so we have to make guesses with the evidence we have. Frequently, as more evidence becomes available, we have to reassess our ideas about the evidence. This is how science works.

Visual representation of a brain with neural connections, highlighting the unexplainable mystery concept. I would go for what exactly is autism. What parts of the brain does it affect? What causes it? Is something missing? Deformed? Overproduced? That way you could show why everything happens and what exactly causes it. I’ve always wondered why my mind is so different ((diagnosed autistic here)) so knowing what is different in my brain literally would help.

It’s a different way the brain is wired. It causes them to have different strengths and weaknesses than neurotypical people. I would guess it originated and natural selection kept it around because it offers some diversity in the way of thinking, so we find out-of-the-box answers.

The brain is the most complex organ of the human being and of course its functioning is not 100% known. It is known the case of a person with half a brain that acts normally because the remaining brain has taken over the functions of the missing part of the brain.

I went to a physical therapist for chronic neck pain and arm twitches caused by pinched nerves from slouching and bad upper body posture. After two months of daily doing these exercises, I realized I had not had a migraine in all that time. It has been six months since my last migraine, which was before I began the neck exercises.

Then that was a *really* bad headache. Don't get me wrong, really bad headaches are awfully unbearable, but a migraine is completely different, that's why painkillers don't work on them, you need medication from the triptan family of d***s, finding the right one helps, once the pressure is gone, the pain dissipates, then it's just the migraine hangover to deal with. People easily mix up headaches & migraines, which is why you should always see a doctor to confirm which you are suffering from so that you can use the correct method to feel better

I used to have migraines. They arrived one day when I was about 17 years old (so my doctor thought it was hormonal), and when I was around 23 years old, a physiotherapy student I knew was writing his master's thesis on migraines and the correlation between migraines and the hyoid bone position and muscle tension (if I recall correctly). He performed a few sessions on me to release muscle pressure around that little bone and to realign it correctly, and I was effectively rid of migraines. And they were migraines for sure. I was further liberated from tension headaches by an osteopath (licensed doctors where I live, before y'all get up in arms) who correctly realigned my atlas - it was misaligned due to a coccyx injury years prior when I fell out of a tree as a kid. Somethinh you may want to look into if you suffer from migraines or tension headache.

Young woman reading a book outdoors, seeking the truth behind an unexplainable mystery. I’d probably go with something that has always fascinated me: the origins of consciousness. Why do we have subjective experiences? Why do we have thoughts, emotions, and self-awareness? It’s one of those ultimate mysteries that cuts across science, philosophy, and even spirituality. Despite all our advancements in neuroscience and psychology, we still don’t fully understand what consciousness actually is, or how it arises from the brain.

And one should be careful not to limit the "we" in that question to human life only. Consciousness, self-awareness of some level, exists within many other animals as well. I'm more interested in how they "think" without any language as such.

Ahh, but then one should be careful as to define "language" as well. Animals communicate in a language all their own. Just b/c we don't understand the various "noises" they make, it could be considered language as they are communicating with one another.

For many years I've figured that it's probably impossible to see beyond the big bang because it's not part of our universe. Fairly recently some mathematical theories have suggested that it might actually be possible. Just the written description of the theory are enough to make my head spin, never mind understanding he actual math. I can't imagine how the universe would spring into existence as a result of the big bang without some predecessor to cause the big bang, but it's still a problem of stacking turtles. Either there's a bottom turtle or it's an infinite stack, and either way it seems inconceivable.

With the universe being about 14 billion years old, there's a high chance that there are civilizations who are thousands of years ahead us, or how about a million? Just like we can observe a worm but the worm has no idea that we exist, they are doing the same.

People who say conclusively "no" have no idea how massive the universe is. Nobody really does. When experts estimate the number of planets out there and start breaking it down to planets that can support life etc etc, they still come up with billions of civilizations. The odds that we are alone are vanishingly miniscule.

That case may be somewhat solved. Apparently there is strong evidence that Christian Brueckner, a German citizen who was living in Portugal at the time, was responsible for her abduction and, given his criminal history, the authorities are working on the assumption that he m*rdered her or gave her to someone else to be m*rdered. He's likely to be charged early next year.

Close-up of a mysterious leaf in a dark forest setting, hinting at an unexplainable mystery. Who put Bella in the wych elm?

    To elaborate:

In 1943, four boys were exploring Hagley Wood in Worcestershire, England, searching for bird nests to raid eggs from for food. One of the boys climbed a large wych elm tree, looked inside and found that it was hollow, and at first he thought what he'd found was sheep skull. He and his friends quickly realised it was human. At first they swore never to speak of it, but one kid soon cracked and told his parents, and law enforcement was alerted.

The recovered skeleton was that of a woman who was speculated to have been there around 18 months. The skull still had a patch of skin and strands of hair. She was fully dressed, although her clothes were badly rotted, and a strip of taffeta was found in her mouth, implying death from suffocation. She still had a wedding ring and one shoe, and one of her hands was found buried under the tree rather than connected to her body. Although police were able to create a depiction of what she would have looked like in life, and contacted local dentists for help with identifying this woman, nobody could tell who she was. Worse still, headlines about her were soon pushed out of the papers by wartime news, and to top things off, her remains have been lost without trace, so modern analysis is impossible.

But at some point in 1944, graffiti began popping up in the area asking "Who Put Bella in The Wych Elm?" implying that *someone* out there wanted this woman's killer to be identified, and suggesting that her name was Bella. To this day, the mystery has remained unsolved, and unless her remains are miraculously found, we will never know who this woman was or, indeed, who put her in the wych elm.

It's so hard to solve a crime when the victim's identity is unknown. I bet those remains are either buried in an unmarked grave or in some archive somewhere so there's always a chance they'll be found again. If we could use genealogy to identify her, I bet the killer is someone who was known to her.

The most widely accepted and proven theory of the origin of the universe is the Big Bang Theory. According to this theory, the universe began approximately 13.8 billion years ago from an extremely dense and hot state. Since then, the universe has been constantly expanding. This theory has been confirmed by numerous observations and experiments, and although there are still open questions and areas of research, it provides the most coherent and complete explanation for the origin and evolution of the universe to date.

There is either something (matter/energy) or there is nothing (space). If something exists then it always existed because something cannot come from nothing. If there is nothing there will never be something, same reason. Easy to say, impossible to grok.

Abandoned plane wreckage on desolate landscape, evoking a sense of unexplainable mystery. I want to know if Larry Hillblom (The H in DHL) actually died in that plane crash? Or if he lived on with his facial reconstruction to avoid consequences.

Dude survives a plane crash in 93. Has facial reconstruction. Plane goes down again in 95, his body is never recovered, but his pilot and coworkers are. Multiple underage rape accusations across Asia. Investigators show up to his house and it is found completely scrubbed with acid destroying any traces of DNA. All personal items removed and found buried in the backyard.

Crazy, but I believe it was planned and he lived.

Yeah he didn't leave a trace of DNA and there were dozens of women claiming he fathered their child. Nobody in his family would give a DNA sample, because he was a billionaire and were heirs, but the lawyers were smart. They tested dozens of kids who's parents claimed he was the father and cross referenced their DNA against each other. I think like 10 kids matched and members of Hillblom's family were then ordered by the courts to submit DNA samples. Each child received an inheritance in the hundreds of millions.

Brain activity usually goes beyond the heart stopping so, imo, brain death is death. Not when the heart stops. And that can go on for a while. Then. Entropy and decay. The metaphysical, once the brain and our definition of awareness /consciousness... is a wholly different question.

That is some thick forest where he jumped. The Washougal river dumped some stuff into the Columbia, which tells me he either died of exposure (wet, cold PNW forest), or splatted somewhere. His leftovers from animals disturbing the corpse would be a Christmas miracle if found, considering the regular deposit of biomass onto the ground from the trees and other flora.....I truly believe until some hunter sees a white skull peeking through something, it will remain an mystery.

Humans NOW need to remember that humans THEN did lead fairly isolated lives in small groups and didn't travel over great distances. That's how we got specific isolated languages, genetic expression, and separate cultures. ...I mean, sure the pyramid was fcckin viral, but as one anthropologist put it: how else in those days were you going to build something high off the ground?....more people need to realize that language changes and in the slow rolling pre-historical world, it had lots of time to change into completely different things. never mind that there were multiple species of humans floating around.

A swirling, luminous black hole in space, visualizing an unexplainable mystery. What happens inside a black hole's event horizon? Is there a sigularity or is there a yet unknown pressure that prevents complete collapse or does matter and energy take on a new exotic form with new properties that prevents it? If it is a singularity, how does quantum effects work there?

In virtually all other contexts, when you calculate a signularity it is due to the theory being an approximation that breaks down there. Like, you can construct a theoretical circuit to get infinite voltage or infinite current somewhere, but when you try it in real life you just fry the electronics and never actually get to infinity. I imagine the inside of a black hole will do something that prevents a singularity, but what is it?

I know right? So many people who think they are so smart that they know the truth after looking into something for a couple of hours. If it was that easy, the police would have already solved it. But it's easy to "solve" cases if you don't need to have actual reliable evidence, or can just ignore counter evidence. People should really ask themselves: What's more likely, that the case is complex and/or there isn't enough reliable evidence to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, or that you are the only person in the world smart enough to figure it out?

This is kind of a non-answer. "Time began with the Big Bang." Sorry, but I'm calling BS on this. "Time" is a human construct, a measure of duration with UNITS ALL DERIVED FROM THE MOTIONS OF OUR OWN PLANET. And since no-one was actually "there", no-one really knows what happened. The Big Bang is somewhat of an Event Horizon; we simply don't know, and will probably never know, what happened before, but it's almost a certainty that SOMETHING did,

Rumor has it that Adams was big into computer coding. In ASCII, the number 42 represents an asterisk. An asterisk is used as a place holder, or it can mean anything you want it to. So I read it as the answer to life, the universe, everything being whatever you want it to be.

The police released some audio that definitely sounds like her talking to her killer while he's driving her to the killing site. Pretty tough to hear. I used to work up there in the oil field when she went missing and there was basically nothing about her at the time. Stumbled on to the story later in life and it always kinda bothered me. I could have been driving the road she was on at the time and probably drove around the site in the same time period.

Two figures in alien masks and black coats walking down a mysterious hallway. If this counts, what alien life/civilization is actually like. not whether or not it exists, but what it is like given it exists. I want to know about CULTURE, man. alien anthropology and sociology.

but if that doesn't count and it has to be a more straightforward mystery...well, does "unexplainable" mean literally nobody on earth knows? or just for most of we can only rely on theories. because then I want to say "info about aliens from area 51" or "what's in area 51" but if that's still breaking the rules because obviously the higher ups can explain that...

then i'll finally say "What really started the universe, the actual origin point" and blow my mind trying to comprehend infinity. or find out there actually is some kind of deity.

The odds of us experiencing any form of alien life from Out There are very slim based on the amount of time required to travel through the universe. Even at light speed the time is measured in light years and when you think we are just now looking at stars from 13 BILLION light years ago/away , the possibility of someone developing a form of travel faster than light seems rather slim.

They can't talk to my secretary anymore because she's d*ad. They thought there was something fishy. Anyway, now they may have figured it out. K*lled her. Maybe I did k*ll my secretary." There were 8 witnesses who attested to him having a relationship with Elizabeth Short. C*daver dogs indicated at his home. He was suspected of other m*rders too. Both his son and his daughter accused him of being the m*rderer. For me, that's pretty cut and dried.

The Wow! signal. Basically, if you wanted to send a message that says "I am here" and you obviously don't know anything at all about any potential alien language, what do you do?

You send something unambiguous, like just the number 1 to show it's not a natural signal. But how do you send the number 1?

Well, hydrogen is the same everywhere in the universe, one proton, so you send a modulated signal in the emission band of hydrogen, basically just saying "1". This was predicted long before we ever detected it, and science isn't about explaining s**t after the fact, but making predictions beforehand and having to wait to see if you ever find evidence.

I'll never live to see it, but I want to know who or what created the Wow! Signal. It's scarier to me than almost any space discovery ever.

It was very long ago, so I don't remember the source, but I recall an option for reaching out to alien civilizations with a message of just prime numbers. Since mathematics is universal (as far as we know), the signal would be recognized by a civilization that was advanced far enough to recognize it for what it was.

Some experts suggest that the Teotihuacan, a Nahuatl-speaking group, were the main builders. The participation of other groups such as the Toltecs or the Otomi has also been proposed.

    Deep Underground Military Bases (DUMBs).
How many are there and how many people are there in them? How deep do they go? What is their real purpose if they exist at all?

How much ancient structures, artifacts, and pictographs/petroglyphs did we lose forever when Lake Powell was filled? Yes I know they did surveys as the dam was being built but it was basically a mad scramble to document things, and there’s so so much out there in canyons nearby, so there’s no way the archaeologists saw it all, especially without modern gps and being in the absolute middle of nowhere in those days. How many pots and baskets and textiles and beautiful structures and intricate barrier canyon style pictographs were drowned?

How much of human history will we never know because our ancestors lived in areas now completely submerged by 100+ft of seawater? Maybe we get lucky and find some more sites like Doggerland that preserved enough material to be studied, maybe we find some more underwater cave entrances that lead to stunning cave paintings, but what if we always have that gap in prehistory because the ice age ended and flooded everything .

It’s not necessarily unexplainable, because there are people who do know the answers, just very few of them, and one singular person probably doesn’t know all of it.

I want to know the ins and outs of all the federal government and military’s safety and security processes. I want all the details about the hidden tunnels underneath Washington DC, any government bunkers that are hidden around the country for potential nuclear fallout, all of the inner workings of the Secret Service, how federal buildings operate behind the scenes, all the little nooks and crannies of the White House and Camp David, and anything else that they won’t tell us.

I think its better if 'we' don't know. Because if 'we' know, 'they' will know too. Its called National Security for a reason, and curiosity isn't a good enough reason to give away information. Just my feeling.

Storytelling and fear. Just like now. It's baffling to me how in these days people still believe the stories and fight around who believes in the "right" way.

Yes, the bigger mystery is not how they came into existence, but how so many people still believe in them to this day.

As a means of explaining a chaotic universe and to give ourselves a sense of being able to affect change by praying, like there's a manager and I can ask him to fix this thing for me.

As I understand it - Dreams lead to belief in spirits (animism). Belief in spirits leads to demi-urges. They evolve into a pantheon (polytheism), which can move towards a belief in multiple gods, but only one is worthy of worship (monolatry), which can then move towards monotheism.
