Did you know that in the 1980s, there was a chimp at the Belgrade Zoo that escaped not once but twice? His name was Sami, and he became famous in 1988 when a photographer snapped a picture of him and the zoo director, Vukosav Bojovic, "conversing" on the roof. Bojovic attempted to coax the animal to come back, resulting in a pretty sweet moment.

There is a 2024 movie called The Six Triple Eight. From IMDB :: "During World War II, 855 women joined the fight to fix the three-year backlog of undelivered mail. Faced with discrimination and a country devastated by war, they managed to sort more than 17 million pieces of mail ahead of time." Its an extraordinary story and a wonderful movie.

So, what happened to Sami the chimpanzee? During his first escape, Mr. Bojovic took Sami by the hand, put him in his car, and drove him back to the zoo. The chimp had made it to Students' Square. His second attempt at an escape didn't end that peacefully – the zookeepers had to use tranquilizer darts.

Sadly, Sami passed away in 1992, and he lived in Belgrade Zoo for a total of four years from 1988. In 1996, the Zoo erected a sculpture in honor of Sami, which still stands there to this day. Newspapers referred to Sami as a "dissident," as many Yugoslavians found his captures and detention at the Zoo poetically similar to their own lives under communism.

The 1948 photo of a man begging his wife not to divorce him is a real piece of history. It started making the rounds on Reddit in 2024, but the historian who uncovered this photo, Jeff Nichols, talked to Business Insider about it. The couple in the photograph is Steve and Anna Strack. Anna was the one who filed for divorce, citing "habitual drunkenness" as the reason.

In those times, spouses had to give the court a considerable reason for going through with the divorce. Yet, in Chicago, divorces were pretty common. According to Nichols's research, the apparently lax divorce laws were a regional joke, prompting people to make jokes such as: "Oh, people in Chicago just get divorced as a problem to have."

Anna Strack also talked with the Chicago Tribune about her divorce at the time, since the photo was printed in the publication. She told them that she would think over her decision. However, the 1950 census showed them as a divorced couple, and Anna lived with her parents and their 4-year-old son and worked as a packer at a gum factory.

I think we miss to mention that it were arab groups that sided with the 3rd Reich back in the 40's and the Muslim Brotherhood's goal was and still is to commit genocide on all jews in the area. Main reason why the UK aimed to split the country both religions shared into two separated countries was to keep the jewish population save from further oppression. Israel literally was attacked on the day it became an independent nation and was constantly under attack since then, even after they gave Gaza autonomy in 2005 the first thing they did was to get people in power that swore to destroy Israel. I go as far as to say that Israel really held back in consideration of the history of the whole region

Although the world prefers to ignore the fact, there are many, many Jews and Arabs who work together in Israel today. We respect each other, admire each other, and many of us remain good friends even if we no longer work together. Live here and you'll see that the problem is not Bibi, but rather the Muslim extremists who would like to see the Jews disappear off the map.

Some say that the photograph of Frederick Douglass with his wife, Helen Pitts, at Niagara Falls was taken during their honeymoon. We can't tell exactly, but we know that their marriage was quite controversial back in the day. Helen was the second wife of Frederick Douglass, the first one being Anna Murray Douglass for 40 years.

After her passing, Douglass fell into a deep depression. Helen is said to have helped him regain his good spirits. However, Douglass's kids opposed the marriage, and Helen's family didn't like her marrying a Black man. The public didn't react favorably, either: some accused Douglass of "forgetting his cause" by marrying a white woman; others denounced the 21-year age gap between the spouses.

A piece of history that people deserve to know is about the Black women who served in the U.S. military during WWII. We might think that most of them were nurses, but there was an all-Black female unit stationed overseas. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was created to deal with the postal worker shortage. They sorted millions of letters and packages that families sent to their loved ones on the war front. In 2022, the former members of the battalion received Congressional Gold Medals.

I thought it was Princess Diana shaking hands with an AIDS patient in hospital which changed the face of AIDS. The more photos the better, I suppose, to get the public to accept people with HIV and AIDS. This photo is far more powerful than the one of Diana. A father/family's love.

I'd say this one was more widespread in the states and the Princess Diana was more prevalent in Europe. There were a lot of people trying to get others to see those that got the disease were patients and victims, not frightful monsters with a contagious disease.

In the late 1980's and early 1990's United Colors of Benetton had an ad campagne with for the time controversial and provocative photographs. This one was one of them; a black woman breastfeeding a white baby, a nun and priest kissing; a baby just out of the womb, a mafia k*****g were others but there are more. The photographs are confronting and timeless.

There is a great song called "Little Italy" from the 70s by Stephen Bishop with a wonderful assist from Chaka Khan.

We all should be so lucky to live until 100 years old. Jeanne Calment was even luckier: she lived until 122. She was born in 1875 in France and passed away in 1997. A Russian mathematician, Nikolay Zak, suggested that Calment actually met her maker earlier and that her age record is actually fake.

According to Zak, Calment passed away in 1934, and the woman everyone thought was Jeanne was actually her daughter, Yvonne. That's why he posited that her grandson called her "maman" and lived with her supposed son-in-law. Zak argued that Yvonne chose to pretend to be her mother to avoid paying inheritance taxes and to have a roof over her head permanently.

However, many experts shut down ideas about Calment's falsified age. Although they admit that a person living until 122 is extremely unlikely from a biological standpoint, they note that perhaps too much had to be faked in Jeanne's case. "Any deception on Madame Calment's part would have required extraordinary prescience and the connivance of surviving relatives and we should banish such thoughts from our minds," gerontologist Tom Kirkwood wrote in his 1991 book, "Could she be a fraud?"

"As the pictures show, Joe had to face the usual mayhem of parenting—crying children, diaper changes, early wake-ups, a sink full of dishes, and the inexplicable random crisis (why is Spencer playing with nails in the hallway?) The photos feel like they could be stills from a 1950s sitcom. And at the end of this episode Joe learned the valuable lesson about domestic labor. He told LIFE after his weekend with the kids, “I feel like I’ve been on a 25-mile hike with a full pack…I wouldn’t change jobs on a bet.”"

You would be surprised if you lived in the US to learn most of us get along just fine. My neighbors are Jordanian, and the kindest and most generous people we've ever known. Patrons at my gym are probably half black, half white, and everyone gets along great, lots of fist bumping and friendly faces. The community next to ours is largely Indian (meaning India, not Native American). We walk our dog there and look forward to chatting it up with the people we see there regularly. They are super nice and love to talk. And this is in a state that leans conservative, in a fairly small town. I know, boring, right? That's why you never hear about it. Media thrives on negative stuff, literally that's how they make money, and some people lap it up and apply it across the board to 350 million people spread across nearly 3000 miles. Cue the down arrows and snarky comments, whatever, but I hope you have a great day!

I had to tell him that US interference put the Shah in charge and caused the revolution in the first place and now look what it led to. Who wants to go down that road again? I support the protestors, but they need to put their own people in charge to have a stable government.

Yes. There was an incident here in New Zealand where white American soldiers tried to stop coloured NZers from entering the RSA! The NZ soldiers booted them out after a bit of a scrap

Britain did not practise racial segregation in the same way as the United States. When Black American soldiers arrived in Britain first, they were treated as fellow servicemen, drank in the same pubs, socialised locally, and in many cases integrated into local communities. British civilians generally judged them on behaviour and character, not skin colour. When white US troops arrived later and attempted to impose Jim Crow style segregation, separate pubs, separate dances, separate treatment, the British reaction was largely hostile to the idea. Many landlords, councils, and local residents simply refused to comply, seeing segregation as offensive and alien to British norms. This caused real friction between British authorities and the US military, and even tension within US units themselves. The result was that segregation often collapsed in practice once it hit British soil. In several places, British establishments explicitly sided with Black soldiers, sometimes banning racists.

I believe the story behind this is that he was told at the moment of the photo that the photographer was Jewish. That's not a resting evil face; that's his reaction to another human who has a religion.

No, it's not in the eyes. Stop that silly superstition. If you didn't know who that is and someone said "Photo of elderly Nobel Prize winner X" you wouldn't "see" anything bad in him. And not everyone who looks like that is a bad person. This fvcking thing only makes life harder for those who don't look naturally sweet, and protects murd.erers and rap.ists who "look innocent".

I believe he is waiting for Trump to start a bunch of stupid wars with trying to annex (i.e., steal) Greenland, Cuba, and possibly Canada, and while all the outrage is focused on his bu‍t‍t-buddy Trump, Putin will slide in and do his dirty work. He is using Trump like a ventriloquist's dummy, although Trump isn't quite as smart as a ventriloquist's dummy. But from his face when the two of them interact, you can tell Trump really LIKES having Putin's hand up his back side.

Yeah. Back then, a handful of rich and powerful businessmen were functionally running the country and oppressing labor. Religious beliefs were interfering with the advance of science and medicine. Racial prejudice and xenophobia were rampant. How lucky we are to live in an age when none of that is still in existence! How pleasantly delusional it must be for anyone to believe the preceding sentence.

The one-drop rule was a legal principle of racial classification that was prominent in the 20th-century United States. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of Black African ancestry ("one drop" of "black blood") is considered black, It is an example of hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status, regardless of proportion of ancestry in different groups. This concept became codified into the law of some U.S. states in the early 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" that developed after the a history of racial interaction in the South, which had included the hardening of slavery as a racial caste system and later segregation. Before the rule was outlawed by the Supreme Court in the Loving v. Virginia decision of 1967, it was used to prevent interracial marriages and to deny rights and equal opportunities and uphold white supremacy.

I didn't think so either, but I went to the original article: "Checking the dates on him and his family... Six children born between 1939 and 1946. William was 53 years old and his wife Ottie was 22 when their twins were born, though neither survived even a month. The children pictured were born in 1940, 1943, and 1944 and the photo is from 1946 when William was, in fact, 60 years old."

If you have a chance, catch the episode of South Park called "All About Mormons" or catch their hysterical Broadway play called "The Book of Mormon." We weren't Mormons. My family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah when I was 10, and I wasn't allowed to transfer to the local Girl Scout troop ("Sorry we are all full"), couldn't make purchases in certain stores, had several apartments lined up to rent until they asked which ward (Mormon church) I was a member of (“Sorry, I just remembered we have someone else we said we would rent it to”), wasn't allowed to be part of several school clubs (yet all the Mormon girls got in, and I had one of the highest grade averages in the school), and several Mormon girls told everyone I was pregnant (sorry - virgin). I dealt with thousands of Mormons in that 15 years and there were in fact some nice ones, but overall I wouldn’t recommend moving there. As for Joseph Smith - if there's a hell, he's there.
