“Who Is A Villain You Rooted For Rather Than The Protagonist And Why?” (50 Answers)
InterviewThe mark of a truly well-written and iconic villain in any story is that their motivations low-key make a lot of sense. In short—they’re relatable. Someone who twirls their mustache and is evil for the sake of being evil is boring. Meanwhile, a flawed character, in whom we can see a part of ourselves reflected back at us, might just become a huge hit in the entertainment industry. Sometimes, they even overshadow the heroes.
Inspired by user u/Sparkjoy4ever, the members of the sprawling r/AskReddit online group spilled the tea about which villains they personally rooted for over the protagonists. Scroll down to check out their opinions, and upvote the ones you agree with.
Bored Panda reached out to the person who sparked the entire discussion, u/Sparkjoy4ever, and they were happy to share their thoughts on well-written villains. Check out our full interview with them, including which villains and heroes they personally love the most!

King Kong. They invaded his home, captured him and then get mad when he’s pissed?
I’m not sure which movie I watched or even if there’s multiple, but when I watched a King Kong movie as a kid, I would always cry at the end when he died. I just really liked the strange, big, angry monkey.
Wasn't this kind of the point of the 1933 movie? It's been a while since I saw it but I know the writer was clear that he saw King Kong as a tragic figure and the overall theme was meant to be the tragedy of "the primitive soul doomed by modernity" or something along those lines. Kinda wild that even in the 30s people had anxiety about how quickly technology was changing the world... Like the idea of a primitive soul resisting being forced into a modern world and then being destroyed by it already resonated as a tragic story.
Was he supposed to be the villain? I thought it was obvious that he was a victim
When I saw King Kong as a child in the 80's,it broke my heart what they did to him
This applies every single animal in the world, including humans
Wolfman, the Lon Chaney Jr original. He was a guy who tried to help but ended up a monster
The author of the thread, u/Sparkjoy4ever, opened up to Bored Panda that they’re a huge fan of books and movies alike. “I've always found villains more interesting than heroes. They seem to have more depth as characters,” they told us.
They were surprised that their question got as much attention as it did online, but they were glad that the “fun and interactive” topic managed to strike a chord with everyone. In their opinion, the thread brought “together people who share the same views on villains in stories.”
We were very interested in getting the author’s take on writing villains well. For them, making relatable villains requires giving them depth. “Show their motivations and struggles, making them human. Even if their actions are wrong, understanding their perspective fosters empathy. A compelling villain challenges the audience's morals, blurring the line between right and wrong, making them intriguing and worthy of empathy,” they shared their perspective with Bored Panda.
The Coyote.
Invictum2go:
And Tom too. Jerry was 90% an a**hole before Tom started.
Though aren't Tom and Jerry in an agreament? That tom never catch Jerry, but try really convining? If he would not then they would take in a new cat that likes to catch mice?
Load More Replies...I'd like to treat Wile E. Coyote to a KFC meal because he taught us to always follow our dream and never give up.
Wile E. Coyote has been slandered for decades. The top speed of a roadrunner is 35 mph. The top speed of a coyote is 45 mph. We've been lied to this entire time, Wile E. Has been repeatedly ripped off by Acme Corporation and defamed. I ask you, is that fair?
It is not fair. Not at all. Unite I solidarity for Wile E.
Load More Replies...to be fair, going "meep meep!" and then running away is a fairly friendly response to someone who is repeatedly trying to end you.
What does "meep meep" mean in Roadrunner?
Load More Replies...I'm still sad that they made the Coyote VS ACME movie and then decided to throw it in a dark pit as a tax write off. It's weird how many bad decisions WB is making.
Squidward.
The guy hates his job, hates his noisy neighbors and overenthusiastic co-workers, wants to leave work on time, needs his quiet time, wishes that he has a sculpted body and dares to dream despite being bad at the skill-a clarinet virtuoso.
We are Squidward.
On the first day I got my clarinet, I said, 'I, (my name) pledge to become Squidward with this wonderous instrument. FOREVER!!" Then proceeded to squeak the mouthpiece XD
All the instruments with mouthpieces sound like a tortured ostrich for the first ten years. Just go on practising. If it makes you happy, that's all you need.
Load More Replies...I watched an interesting video on character analysis in SpongeBob (yup), where the youtuber presented his therory that Squidward is actually the most important character of the cartoon, and the one everyone should identify to. Melancholic and alienated worker working for an ultra capitalist a$$hole, leading a dull monotonous life, has his dreams fading away as he entered adult life. Only joy in is life is music and art which he is not even able to perform peacefully because of his neighbor's toxic positivity. But in some episodes you see his passions and dreams are still existent within him somehow. The episodes centered around Squidward in the first seasons are the deepest for real. He's the insert of reality in a show centered around a psychedelic sponge in an extraordinary goofy universe.
And then there's that episode when ALL his "villains" band together to give him a Flawless Victory at the Stadium.
He's Squidward, he's Squidward, I'm Squidward. We are all Squidward (opposite day)
“For me, personally, the narrative provides me, as the audience, with a chance to think, ‘Wait, if I were him/her, would I do the same thing?’ and I realized, ‘Yeah, maybe I would.’ If I was in the same position as the villain, I would understand and empathize with them. The villains are quite relatable, but other times, they’re just straight-up crazy, and I find that just as enjoyable,” u/Sparkjoy4ever said.
Bored Panda was curious to hear who the author’s favorite villain of all time is. They told us that their top spot belongs to Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz from the popular cartoon Phineas and Ferb.
“He [Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz] had such a jagged childhood. His parents didn’t deem it necessary to appear at his OWN birth. But even now, in the show, he managed to grow up to be a great, loving, and awesome scientist and dad to his daughter Vanessa who simply wants to take over the city,” u/Sparkjoy4ever said that Doofenshmirtz is a wholesome Disney Channel villain.
In Jaws 2 near the end there is this girl who won’t stop screaming hysterically and I kind of want the shark to eat her so it will stop.
This is the same reason I wanted the Aliens in War of the Worlds to kill Dakota Fanning.
It would be worth twice the money just to see a murderous villain stop, look at the screaming banshee, check his watch, then walk away, shaking his head.
It's Chomp, SCREAM!!!, Chomp, Scream!!, Chomp, Scre!, Chomp, scr..., Burp.

I always wished Tom would win in Tom and Jerry.
3StarsFan:
Remember it's Tom and Jerry and not Tom vs Jerry. I love the theory that people say both of them are friends and that they have to pretend fight so that the Toms owners keep him.
I agree....I HATE Jerry...he is a mean little mo-fu and it's unfair that Tom was so tortured by Jerry. I can't watch this cartoon...
Load More Replies...Fan Theory fails in the number of times when Jerry got Tom booted (and Jerry celebrated his leaving) or when they both were thrown out because antics escalated too far.
I liked how every now and again they would team up on a mutual enemy
Tom was the victor in exactly 50% of the cartoons. Jerry, the other 50%.
I rooted for Snape in every scene he was in with Umbridge.
Umbridge is bad, Snape is good. Simple logic there! (Edit: Ok, Snape is PARTIALLY good, at least compared to Umbridge, lol!)
Snape is not really good. He is an adult with authority bullying a child because he can't deal with past experiences that child had no way of knowing or changing. He made up for his bad deeds when he joined the goodies, up to a point, but he only stopped supporting the baddies when it affected him personally.
Load More Replies...After this phenomenal Umbridge, I can't imagine anyone else playing Umbridge. She is so perfect for the role.
Ditto for Snape. Alan Rickman was extraordinary. I was privileged to see him on stage.
Load More Replies...My professor in college once described Snape as a byronic hero. He did the right thing for the wrong reason, aligning with the protagonists not for their cause but for his own loss and love, and dying a hero's death despite never being heroic in his heart. My professor also said it was kind of sad that children's lit has become so limited in the past few decades that Snape is the closest thing to a morally gray or dark hero most kids are familiar with. For some reason people assume kids can't handle nuance, when in my experience they handle it better than a lot of adults. Better than most adult Harry Potter fans, anyways.
I thought at first Snape was going to a Weatherwax figure - a deeply unpleasant person with an overpowering sense of the moral good. Imagine my disappointment when he turned out to be an incel Nazi
Load More Replies...Snape is only good compared to Umbridge. He's still a teacher who bullied students.
Look at all the people who can't read going "Snape must be a hero because I, too, am an unpopular virgin"
I rooted more for draco i felt sorey for him he was just a bullied scared little boy mistreated by his father
Everytime I see Snape I have to announce my headcanon: he's a distant cousin to Gargamel and Azrael and Miss Norris came from the same litter.
On the flip side, the author’s favorite protagonist might just be Thomas from The Maze Runner series. “He is a resilient and resourceful young man, and he also embodies leadership qualities. I love his character arc throughout the books,” they said.
“Overall, I admire a majority of the Dreamworks protagonists, such as Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon, Sinbad from Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Moses from The Prince of Egypt, and Puss In Boots from The Last Wish,” they shared some more of their favorite heroes.
If you want your audience to be immersed and to suspend its disbelief, then you need to get the details right. In short, that means putting in a lot of effort to build up your world and your characters. Everything has to more or less make sense in the context of the world we’re being shown on the silver screen or on the pages of a book. Nobody’s asking for ‘perfection,’ but the basic logic, at least, has to be consistent.
Magneto. His family was ripped apart by Nazis as a child. Then he watched governments hunt down his people again as a mutant...
amican:
Damn was he the best part of First Class. 'I agree with every word you said. We are the future. But... unfortunately, you killed my mother.' I've been at the mercy of men just following orders... never again.
I truly believe Magneto is a character that has had no bad adaptations whatsoever. The movie or show might not be good, but Magneto will always be one of, if not the best characters in it.
And Magneto wants to do to the rest of humanity exactly what the Nazis did to him. Yes, his backstory is horrifying, but he very much wants to do the exact same thing to every non-mutant.
I always wondered if it was a little bit of an appropriation of Malcom X and Dr King, with the roles reversed (what with the X in prof's name).
It turned out Magneto behaves exactly the same way israel behaves now.
It's pretty easy to cast him as a hero, TBH. He's a genius, a polyglot, super powerful and he punches jerks.* He makes good points, and it's really easy to see where he's coming from. Like, mutant registration stuff? Yeah, I'd get angry too. The one thing I don't like is that he's pretty much the only Holocaust survivor I can think of in the Marvel universe, and that has...unfortunate implications. There is another Jewish mutant though, Kitty Pryde!** (Also I thought he wanted to found a mutant country but then it got invaded, not necessarily subjugation?) *Fun fact: historically, Jewish gangsters, which did in fact exist, punched American nazis and damn if it's the Jewish murderers against the Nazis it's hard not to root for the murderers. They were good at it, too. Didn't kill anyone and wouldn't accept money for the job. **The annoying thing is that there's no one super/vaguely observant in the MCU. Apparently not objectifying the female characters is too much to ask.
Yes! Magneto is one of my favorite characters. He can be so very nuanced
Frankenstein's monster.
The character in the book is a very sympathetic character. I recommend reading it if you're at all into psychology or philosophy.
Like Kong, this guy's a straight up victim. The real villain is the doctor.
Because it's a drag having to introduce yourself all the time
Load More Replies...Frankenstein's monster is a bit like you and me...and the plumber who died last week, and the late librarian, and the computer repai.......
Frankenstein's Creature was tortured, sympathetic character. All he wanted was to find kinship with those unlike him. For me, one of the most accurate portrayals of this character is the one in the series Penny Dreadful. He was very close to the literary version and beautifully portrayed by the masterful Rory Kinnear. I recommend watching the series to experience a heartbreaking and beautiful portrayal of Shelley's Creature ❤️💯✨
The creature is so relatable and empathetic because he is all of us.
I don’t know if Sylvester is supposed to be the bad guy and Tweety is supposed to be the good guy, but wow is that Tweety Bird annoying af. Maybe it’s the voice, I hate that voice.
Kiss me sweet, kiss me simple, kiss me on my widdle dimple. That ditty pops into my head way more than it should for someone nearly 60 years old. That and singin' in the bathtub. . .
....watchin' all my twubbles go swingin' down the dwain....
Load More Replies...Tweety is an arrogant, whining, deceitful, self absorbed little so-and-so, who has granny wrapped around his little finger (claw?).
I’m 64 and I still watch the original Looney Tunes when I need a really good laugh… “I’m a cute widdle bird in a gilded cage, Tweety’s my name but I don’t know my age…”
It is the voice like Lambsy, not to be mistaken for the Disney one, in It's the Wolf.
The voice... Ever noticed how similar Tweety Bird and Elmer Fudd sound? Several voice actors voiced both Tweety Bird and Elmer Fudd (Mel Blanc, Joe Alaskey, and Jeff Bergman among them). I thought the voice worked for Elmer, but it just didn't work for Tweety, IMHO.
“Superheroes, aliens, and magic are the price of admission. That's what I'm paying for with the movie. After that, everything else should be relatable,” writer and math teacher Christopher Burke told Bored Panda earlier.
“There can be a dragon. The dragon can swear, smoke cigars, and drink whiskey if it wants to. But if it starts talking about cigars and whiskey and gets basic facts (which are easily found) wrong, someone's going to notice, and that will pull them out of the moment. The audience will willingly accept the big stuff or they wouldn't watch the movie. It's the small stuff that's distracting, and sometimes you wonder if they could've avoided it."
Loki in the first Thor movie. He's absolutely right that Thor is unprepared to rule. And his breakdown is because Odin was a d**k and took him, never told him he was adopted, and never put a stop to any of the s**t people said about the Jotuns that he grew up hearing, at least some of which had to have been coming from inside the palace. The cherry on top was that Odin did a whole lot worse and covered the whole thing up, literally and metaphorically.
That's proper Norse mythology. The gods are di*ks and they're all going to die.
I still think my favorite myth from the poetic Eddas is when Loki suggests that Thor dress up in a wedding dress to trick the giant Thrym.
Load More Replies...It hurts me that they couldn't get Rene Russo for the Loki TV series. All that time travel and he couldn't be reunited with the one person who was always good to him
Loki’s ending in the series was truly bittersweet. He got the throne that he realized he truly never wanted. He realized that being a hero tragically can come with sacrifice and heartache. Honestly, I will still argue that Loki had one of the most moving and beautiful character arcs from villain to dare I say hero.

Gru and his Minions, stealing the Moon, etc!
Both are villians, vector is the antagonist

Exactly! According to Freud, everyone has an Ego, a Super Ego, and an Id. These are hundreds of happy little Ids, what's not to love :)
Load More Replies...I believe he was a failed super villian. That is why you wanted to root for him.
I've never seen this. I guess I never will. The whole world loves it. Like... People never seen a proper movie for kids. (I don't have to waste my time watching this to make up my opinion... All the hype and stuff was enough)
I was 3 when Jurassic Park came out. I rooted for the dinosaurs. Still do!
I saw Jurassic Park opening night, and I remember the entire audience jumping to their feet and screaming and clapping when the T Rex ate the lawyer.
No seriously. Humans brought them to life. What did they expect? They were just doing what dinosaurs apparently do
Who TF brings a 3-year-old to see Jurassic Parc? Who TF lets a 3yo into the movie theater?
Whenever the villain is some wild animal, you root for them. Simple rule.
I rooted for the dinosaur to immediately kill the little girl who wouldn't stfu with the screaming.
it felt like mice recreating faster cats and complaining to get hunted by these better predators. If you try to play god, you may end as snack
I was so hoping there was a scene in San Diego where there was a kid kicking seat backs in a theater and the T Rex breaks into the roof and eats the kid.
Cardboard cutout mustache-twirling villains and heroic, well, heroes do have a place in entertainment, sure. But if you’re aiming for a deeper story rather than an action-focused narrative, you’ll want to spend time fleshing out each character to make them multi-dimensional.
The very best characters in movies, video games, and books have depth. No matter the story you’re writing, ideally, you want all of your characters to have an authentic personality, grounded motivations, and a backstory that draws the audience in. You also want to sprinkle in some genuine flaws to balance out their strengths.
Crowley - supernatural
he is the king of hell after all.
Both Crowley and his mother Rowena. They were great. It's not always easy to tell who the real villains are with Supernatural, though. A lot of back and forth.
I think part of that is who they're played by. Mark Sheppard and Ruth Connell are both fantastic actors.
Load More Replies...Omg he’s literally my favorite character. I named my dog after him. He fought hard to become the ruler of hell but had a soft spot for “the boys”. I HATED how they did him so dirty near the end when Luci reclaimed hell. And cried so hard when he left the show
Despite the fact that he's a demon and the king of Hell, he's not completely evil. He does quite a few good things for the Winchesters. But he never completely gives up being a demon, so you never know which version of him you're going to get.
I love how much depth he had in his character too. Sometimes he was my favorite character and other times i hated him lol🤣🤣
David Tennant’s portrayal was exactly how I imagined Crowley in the book! So good!
Load More Replies...Crowley is more of an anti-hero to me than a villain. Same with Rowena. Now Metatron can go directly into the cage forever. Death is too kind for that douche. He is the Joffrey Baratheon of Supernatural 🤯🤬🫠
Not only is he great as Crowley but he's a really nice, laid back, down to earth guy in person too😈😃
The Sharks in Deep Blue Sea. They were being tortured and experimented on. They just wanted to escape and live their lives.
They’re just swimming around in their *home* like I’ma do a blub blub and then humans come and mess with them.. Not cool! 🦈
Who wouldn't go a little bit mad when you have your brain chemistry messed around with.
Don't fuc* with nature, these dumbas*es tried to play God, and God said " no chance " agree with @cat chat though, the cook deserved to survive, all he did was cook, that's it....
Never saw the movie but based on this still the actor is going to lose his fake arm right along the seam between the lighter and darker white fabric and the weird bulge underneath the armpit is his real arm=
Well, in that scene...he should've known better than to smoke in front of a shark.
Isn't this the movie where in the original cut the female scientist lived but people were so pissed because they hated her so much that they had to reshoot an ending where she died?
The Hound from GOT.
He had one of the best arcs. Once free of Joffrey, the only villainry he had was wanting to cash in.
When you first meet the character, he's the absolute worst. Then George R.R. Martin is like "Hold my beer", because that whole series is like who can be the most horrible human on Earth. The bad guys in the beginning are no where near as evil as the villains at the end.
Load More Replies...Haven't seen much of the TV show, but loved the character in the book. I hope someday the books are finished so I can see what happens to him.
Quite honestly one of the best characters in the series . He saved more people than most .
Never watched GOT, never read GOT. All I needed was LOTR. The best question from LOTR is "WWGWTWF?"
Some of the most memorable villains are also going to be relatable to the audience. At least on some level. Look, you don’t have to be in the bad guy’s corner, supporting everything they do, but let’s not be naive—the villains sometimes have a point. Their goals, means, or motivations can really resonate with us if we’ve had a similar upbringing or suffered the same setbacks.
It’s a weird feeling when some of your values align with someone you’re ‘supposed to’ be betting against. But, again, these sorts of villains are the best ones. In a similar vein, quality protagonists are those who have clear weaknesses and flaws. ‘Perfection’ is boring and simple. Insecurities, fears, and anxieties, however, make for good growth opportunities and great character arcs.
The replicants in Blade Runner — they just want to live but Harrison Ford is walking around shooting them dead in the street.
Any movie that Rutger Hauer played the bad guy, I wanted that bad guy to win:)
Have you seen him in blind fury? Great movie
Load More Replies...The Replicants were really a self-fulfilling prophecy thing. Their lifespans are artificially limited because humans are afraid that with their enhanced abilities that the Replicants could overthrow them and replace them - therefore creating the resentment and hatred for humanity in the Replicants because they felt cheated and enslaved. I think a lot of people forget the Replicants aren't really robots - they're genetically engineered humans used as slave labor, whose rights were stolen from them before birth. They aren't the villains, they're the victims.
Supposedly he "significantly modified" the script ... but the crew applauded it ... and it was kept
Load More Replies...Even worse, they were using a Replicant to shot other Replicants dead in the street.
I think that's kind of the point, Philip K. D**k was asking questions about the morality of creating artificial life for our own purposes - can they still be treated as "product" when you have given them self awareness?
I highly recommend the books of p.k. D**k, He wrote about ethical problems and human behaviour in a complex future. blade runner and minority report are two great movies based on his shortstories.
For me the best part of Blade Runner was the anime spin off, Bubblegum Crisis. One of the heroines in that series was named Priss. She was bada$$.
Hmmm sort of. They murdered several families to get to earth. Not as innocent as you make it seem
Did you miss the part where I mentioned they were slaves? A slave killing their "masters" to gain their freedom isn't a crime.

Ken from the bee movie. His girlfriend is throwing away their happy picture perfect life/relationship because she falls in love with a f*****g bee. Man got cucked by a bee, and we're supposed to be angry at HIM???
From what I remember, it’s his lack of empathy for a living being that was the wrecking ball.
Only a few drones are male, and very short-lived. So, cucked by a girl. That's gotta sting, amirite?
Heinz Doofenshmirtz - He had a rough childhood. His parents didn't even bother showing up for his own birth but he managed to grow up to be a loving father who simply wants to take over the tri-state area. If it weren't for that pesky platypus.
Snowtwo:
I remember hearing a theory that Perry was actually meant more to be kind of an emotional support animal. OWCA knew Doof wasn't actually *evil* and that he was actually a genius. But due to his own upbringing and bad life and such he was effectively in a bad spot mentally. So they assigned him Perry to keep Doof from going truely evil while, at the same time, letting him work it all out so he could finally reform into becoming an actual force for good.
You guys know that "doof" means "dumb" in german? (The oo sounds like "door", not like "boot")
Let’s not forget that most people in real life believe they’re the heroes of their own stories. Similarly, most villains (if they were real) would probably think that they’re the protagonists and the masters of their own destinies. From their perspective, it’s the heroes who are the antagonists, trying to thwart their plans.
If you have a subjective view of morality, then you might agree that what we consider ‘good’ or ‘bad’ depends on who wins at the end of the story. However, if you subscribe to the idea that certain behaviors are good and evil on an objective—cosmic—scale, a villain’s story can be even more tragic. They might have honorable intentions, but the means that they use to reach their goals go against ethics and morality. Or they always try to act in the right way, but this has unintended negative consequences for everyone.
Spike in buffy.
So hot! Back in the day, when I got my divorce, my mom and I taped Spike’s face over my ex-husband’s in all our family photos lol

Hard to root for a rapist, I could root for Spike until then. And no amount of good deeds could rehabilitate him in my eyes. Even the actors and writers on the show have said they knew it was too damn far. Ill take those downvotes.
Joss did that on purpose to make the audience hate Spike because he was jealous of how popular Spike had gotten. And because Joss is a complete chode.

Gustavo Fring. His best friend was killed and seeing him get his revenge against the cartel was immensely satisfying. Seems like a chill boss for a d**g lord. Just don’t f**k around and you won’t get f*****g murdered. All Walt had to do was do his f*****g job and it would have been smooth sailing. Not to mention he’s an extremely fair boss, he pays his civilian employees well and goes to bat for them and protects them against his other life.
Shout out to Giancarlo Esposito's talent. Dude's Italian but does an amazing job with Spanish roles
black and italian. his mom is an AA opera singer. he was born in copenhagen but grew up in nyc.
Load More Replies...I concur with this wholeheartedly. Gus Fring was the true hero of BB.
I did not like Mr Fring, nor Moff Gideon, or whatever his name is. But, and this is a big butt, I very much enjoyed Mr Esposito's acting in both of those roles, He was the best choice for both roles and should be heavily awarded for both. I respect those characters and the actor for such outstanding work.
Also, Fring was the only thing standing between Walt and those super friendly, wacky twins.
It had to go down that way for us to see how corrupted Walter had become
In the end, some members of the audience will usually end up cheering for well-written characters, whoever they are. But they, their aspirations, and their mindset have to be believable for them to be relatable.

Captain hook. he's interesting and cool; that spoiled boy is as twisted as him but boring as f**k. i really can't stand peter pan. just grow up you little s**t.
Peter Pan was originally the villain for stealing children and preventing them from growing up. Captain Hook was an interesting side character.
Peter Pan is the angel of death. Not a villain. Nah, come to think of it, Neverland is a way station on the final voyage, and Peter Pan keeps the lost souls from moving on.

Plus in greeck mythology hades is a relatively good guy. The real bad guy was actually hera who hated hercules
I don't think Hera would have been nearly so villainous if her husband Zeus hadn't been sticking is dong in everything that moved. I mean, Zeus walks by a pond, and the fish stop swimming and eye him nervously. 😂
Load More Replies...Plus, in actual mythology, Hades wasn't bad. Zeus, on the other hand, was a giant douche who screwed everything with a pulse.
I feel bad for OG Hades. He was tricked into ruling the underworld and not living on Mt. Olympus because Zeus is a bigger d**k than the other gods and was worried they would like Hades more
'He's a guy!' 'You're forgetting one little detail... I OWN YOU!'
Gerard Butler in Law Abiding Citizen. The ending was b******t.
100% agree about the ending. What? He suddenly wasn’t intelligent anymore..
ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY! I loved Gerard Butler's character; hated the ending; despised all the hypocrites including Jamie Foxx's character although, this was where I first saw Viola Davis and she ALMOST stole the movie. I was mesmerized by her. "I'm not having this conversation." WHEW! I felt that. She was (relatively) unknown then but I knew she'd be big.

Imhotep from The Mummy (1999). He just wants to get his girlfriend back.
EVERYONE in that movie is insanely good-looking. Especially the Magi. Had me going.
Load More Replies...It was so sad in the second movie when she ignores his pleas for help and runs away to save her own skin. The look of heartbreak and despair on his face before he gives up and lets himself fall was just... goddamn.
I wish there was an Oscar for a scene. He nail that scene.
Load More Replies...Imhotep might be more sympathetic if he wasn't willing to destroy and enslave entire populations to get that girlfriend back. (A girlfriend who doesn't really love him anyway.)
There is a question though: Was it him or the curse put on him that forced him to do that?

Sometimes the joker. He wins if Batman kills him, but he would also be saving so many lives if he could just get him to kill all the villains.
I really liked Jack Nicholson as the joker in Batman (1989) and felt he carried the movie. I kind of felt like it should have been called The Joker instead of Batman.
That was my favourite batman. I love Jack Nicholson and Micheal Keaton. The soundtrack was brilliant

People see The Joker as the bad guy, because he reveals truths about ourselves we don't like.... How easy it is to turn us from " Good Guys " into " Villain's ...." " Chaos is Fair "
I think he's a bad guy for the way he treats Harley, who brings light to the dark DC universe.

Dracula, every movie, because he should never be that easy to kill.
DentrassiEpicure:
Tbf he was difficult af to kill in Van Helsing the movie. Dude had to change into a werewolf to fight him and even then it was hard.
The book is like that. Huge build up, and then it's all over within like one sentence. I had to read it twice to make sure I understood.
I think we can all agree that Keanu Reeves was the villain in Bram Stokers Dracula. He murdered the English accent in that film.
Also, in the movie shown in the screenshot, I couldn't help feeling sympathy for him. I totally wanted him to win.
Even Buffy couldn't kill Dracula, all she did was shame him in to leaving lol.
The Phantom, Phantom of the Opera. Partially because I'm insane, partially because Raul is a joke, and partially because Gerard Butler is f*****g hot.
Sure, movie phantom is hot but book phantom kidnapped her to kill her and keep her corpse with him.
What a strange story to be romanticized.
Load More Replies...If you pay attention to the lyrics at the end he's basically singing about how he's going to r a p e her and kill her fiance. In the book he has a torture chamber he uses on people.
please please please yall, read the original book, its so much better than that d@mn musical
You might want to read the book first— Erik’s a wee bit of a psychopath with his own personal torture chamber.
In the movie version, when Gerard Butler's mask came off I was like "I'd still smash. That's not a deal breaker"
I admit I sort of rooted for him as a kid. Gerard Butler portrayed Phantom as equally evil, sympathetic, and heart-rending!

Team Rocket. (Jessie and James)
When I was younger I got super fed up with the fact that team Rocket never won.
I am happy to report that there was, in fact, an episode where they beat Ash fair and square! (I think it was in the Alola region)
I like Team Rocket in Sun and Moon pokemon anime. They are hilarious. They have lives outside of Ash and Pikachu. And they do achieve some minor victories now and then. They have episodes focusing on their actual development. And they don't need to appear every episode. Ironically, I am not much fond of Ash from the same region. He is too wonky and dumb for my taste.
lol we call two of my cats team rocket. I don’t know anything about Pokémon but my kids says it’s because they’re always f*cking sh*t up in the house when they’re fighting
Me too. I love Meowth, and they should totally win because of him!
Dr Evil. Way more interesting and fun character than Austin Powers.
Agree without this character this would have been a mediocre forgettable film.
'I didn't spend ten years at Evil Medical School to be called MISTER, thankyouverymuch!'
I feel like the actor that was Dr Evil was a lot better than whoever played Austin Powers.
That's DOCTOR Evil. I didn't go to evil medical school to be called 'mister', thankyouverymuch.
I would like to give this comment... *Dramatic zoom and music sting* One million up votes!
Mojo Jojo, he never really seemed like he wanted to do anything super evil but the PPG repeatedly beat the stupid out of him for pretty much no reason.
nola_throwaway53826:
It's been a while, but I remember one episode where he was just minding his own business, not doing anything to anyone and the PPG just showed up and beat the living sh*t out of him.
The episode referenced was one of the original episodes back in the 90's (or early 2000s'). The Gangrene Gang (the green-skinned bad guys) had broken into the mayor's office and using one of their own's ability to mimic voices used the Red Phone to call the PPG and say that certain villains were doing crimes, getting the PPG to burst in to stop them when they actually aren't doing anything wrong. They target Jojo, HIM and one other villain (can't remember who) before the three villains figure out what's happening and go to deal with the Gangrene Gang themselves, effectively saving the day.
Mojo Jojo was the assistant to and was given his big brain/intellect by Professor Utonium, who abandoned him the moment the Powerpuff Girls were created. The Prof literally tossed him out in the street. Also note, there's an episode where Mojo Jojo does in fact win - he takes over the tri-state area and is just.. really really good at running it. He fixes everything.
Mojo wanted to rule Townsville, and did plenty supervillain stuff. The one where the Powerpuffs beat him up for no reason is the episode where the Mayor started paying them in candy, and they got addicted to it, so made up excuses to fight villains for candy. It was wrong, and they very much know it. Learning and morals in a kid's cartoon is like basics of the basics.
This is what I picked up from the PPG movie. Dude is bitter about being out-shined by his "fathers" (The Professor) latest creation. He also is inspired to also be a creator because he is subconsciously wanting to be back with his pops, but also never learned how to deal with their emotions well. You can be knowledgeable and intelligent, but could have a weak emotional intelligence. Mojo Jojo would probably get closure with therapy.
When I was shorter their fight scenes bothered me a lot because of his brain being so exposed and vulnerable and the girls not giving a flying funk* (x. X)
Lowkey sometimes I wanted Mr crocker to win because Timmy can be a real a*****e in some episodes.
Also, he's telling the truth and people just keep calling him crazy. I'd be upset enough to try to capture them too.
Zuko from avatar.
I swear that Zuko had one of the most moving hero to villain arcs I’ve ever seen in a show. He went from vengeful teen longing to reclaim his honor to a true ally who fought to right the wrong that his own father and the fire nature perpetuated. I don’t think that Zuko would have gotten very far though if it wasn’t for the support and guidance of Uncle Iroh.
I think it's sweet that Greg Baldwen will always say he is the second voice of Uncle Iroh and will never sing Leaves from the Vine in respect for Mako

I never thought she was the villain nor was she meant to be seen as one. I always thought that the teacher was shown to be the villain, even his motives were petty and f*cked up. Somehow, some people seem to think that he was meant to be the protagonist. Thankfully, people watching this in a post-“#MeToo” world are now starting to see his character for the slimeball he is. Also, part of me wants to think that his character is, basically, Ferris Bueller (another entitled jerk-a$$ character) all grown up.
Daenerys Targaryen Still can’t get over it 😡 😭.
It was always going to go that way (both what she did and how things ended for her).
Yeah they just rushed the end of that journey too much
Load More Replies...She was a power hungry and evil tyrant who enjoyed burning people alive for not bowing down to her and she had been doing that since the end of season 1. People who were always on her side really needed to pay attention to what kind of person she was.
They even said she needed Tyrion to keep her from her worst impulses.
Load More Replies...I saw someone say Daenerys is a good example of how foreshadowing can't substitute for character development, and that's why her end felt unsatisfying even though most people saw it coming.
It was foreshadowed for 4 seasons, or more. If you didn't see it coming you really weren't paying attention.
This is absolutely false. I read the books and have watched the show multiple times and there was nothing in her decisions that showed that she was capable of doing what she did. I would have been fine with the ending if there was a build up but there wasn't.
Load More Replies...Okay but hear me out...Let's rewrite the ending. First thing Daenerys does on reaching Westeros is take King's Landing and the Iron Throne. But the other kingdoms aren't too pleased with a Targaryen overlord, so she spends half the season battling to unite the seven into a force that can actually face the White Walkers. She succeeds but it takes her becoming more and more heartless and tyrannical - justifying each step because the literal existence of life is at stake. Finally her army is victorious - the White Walkers are vanquished in an epic and devastating battle. Jon Snow realizes that the Daenerys he loved is gone...she sacrificed her goodness and humanity in order to save the world and now has become the "Mad Queen" in truth. With everlasting regret, he uses their intimacy to end her life. I think that's where Song of Ice and Fire was going to get to that ending...but the Game of Thrones TV show ruined it (along with all the other amazing character arcs being developed).
It was very clear that Daenerys was tragically going to go down that road. I do agree that the ending was rush, however, there were signs that showed just how ruthless and vengeful Daenerys could be to anyone who opposed her. We started out rooting for her because she annihilated her enemies. However, the lines between who she saw as innocent and enemy hit more blurred throughout the series. The second book hints at her gradual descent when she visits the House of the Undying and sees what she believes is a throne covered in snow.
Macho Man Randy Savage. Hulk Hogan always cheap shots his friends (especially in the Royal Rumble), he includes himself in all of his ally’s achievements so he can hotdog and grandstand, and he had lust in his eyes for Miss Elizabeth.
It sucks so bad what happened to Miss Elizabeth and how things ended for her. MMRS going out the way he did is also pretty screwed up. There are a lot of people that think if Miss Elizabeth and Randy had stayed together and didn't get a divorce then she never would have gotten involved with d***s and Lex Luger, because RS did everything he could to shield her from it. I know some people that think he was controlling because he tried to keep her away from the locker room and other wrestlers because he was jealous. He knew what the hell was going on with some of the guys and was just trying to protect her. Everyone saw what ended up happening with Chris Benoit so I don't blame him for trying to keep her away from that s**t.
Watch the Royal Rumble where Sid eliminates Hogan fairly. Hogan (The All-American hero) complains like a d**k and then illegally holds onto Sid to get him eliminated. Sid is treated as the villain but Hogan, who openly cheated, was still the good guy. D**k, d**k, d**k.
Hogan is one of the biggest Douchebags in the Wrestling World. That d**k has interfered and tried to intimidate anyone that he perceived as a possible threat to his "reign" and there is a reason that guys in the locker room hated him. Hogan was so jealous, hateful and tried to ruin and sabotage The Undertaker, Rock, Cena, SCSA, Triple H, Edge, MMRS, Ultimate Warrior, Iron Sheik, RIC Flair, etc. Careers and reputations simply because they were getting bigger and more popular then him. WWE should NOT have allowed him back into the Hall of Fame after they stripped that title from that Racist A*****e!

But getting to watch all of the old matches and The Undertaker/Mark Calaway podcast and interviews that he's done has been so cool and amazing.
Ursula.
Could have been said it was allowed in the thing Ariel signed, she didn't read it.
Load More Replies...From what I heard about the original story, the sea witch never tried to make Ariel fail. Ariel simply failed to seal the deal, and the prince fell in love with someone else.
Correct. She had no voice, every step she took caused her extreme pain, and she saw the prince she loved was happy and in love with someone else. So, she threw herself back into the ocean. Originally she then drowned, the happier version is that she becomes a mermaid again
Load More Replies...As a kid I didn't, but as an adult I agree. Yeah Ariel is good and Ursula is evil and all that, but Ariel is so boring and Ursula is interesting as hell and really fun to watch. She gave ariel a excellent pair of legs that matched her body great not like turned her into a centour or summin ariel was just stupid she could of wrote a letter to eric explaining everything but dhe didnt not to mention she was 16 and wanted to run away with a stranger she saw once and never even spoke to although in the book i did feel sorry for ariel evry step she took would hurt her she stayed close to eric sleeping outside his room but he just saw her a little sister he fell in love with some1 else her sisters all gave up their hair so she could return to the sea but she refused and died
Boyd Crowder from Justified. I think it's because his character was acted so well he felt real. And the protagonist Raylan turned into a mega a*****e in the final season. .
That was a really cool TV show. It stays in mind because of probably the most interesting villain in recent TV history, as far as I'm concerned.
Yeah...I don't like Raylan near the end and loved Boys Crowder. I love Walter Goggins in Justified. He's awesome in it but I think his best role so far is as Uncle Baby Billy on the Righteous Gemstones. Fantastic show!!

Lex Luthor. Imagine growing up knowing that everything has to be earned. And then a "god" comes from the sky and completely decimates your world view. And that said god has everything you wanted. I'm not justifying Lex, but dude is relatable.
No, Lex believes that a superhero with superpowers is bound to turn evil. I mean, because he can't imagine that a person with superpowers would use them for good and stay modest and low like Superman does. So he believes the best course of action, for the betterment of the world, is to kill all superheroes starting with Superman. He would even try and kill the supervillains. And since Lex has super intelligence and powerful connections, make him the person in charge. Lex is mad.
agree, cuz in the end, was Lex really wrong? i'm not a DC person, so maybe i'm not understanding it properly, but didn't Superman start feeling his s**t and go left, and that resulted in "Batman vs. Superman"?
In Death Note, Light is the protagonist and the villain so I hope this counts. I don't like Near as much as L so I ended up rooting for Light even though he became completely consumed by his god complex.
And here we see demonstrated the difference between "protagonist" and "hero", just like most of these stated "villains" are actually antagonists. The protagonist is just the main character that the story follows, that doesn't necessarily have connection with "the hero". Light is the protagonist and the villain, yes.
For a presumely super intelligent guy he was pretty stupid or too lazy to come up with creative ways to kill his victims. He wasn't creative enough and too greedy to prevent the pattern recognition in the first place.
