Who doesn't love a good map? I'd even say we'd get lost without one. They enrich our understanding of the world in a simple, visual way.

Maps teach us not only about the size and shapes of countries but also show many more interesting things, like earthquake locations and wealth distribution. The local status of gay marriage or car reliance. Pretty much everything we have data on!

So let's revisit this subreddit for a new dose of cartography — it hits just as strong as the previous ones.

As I go to each state, I get a state-shaped magnet from there, so I'm building a map of the United States. They won't all fit together so perfectly, because they can't be of the same scale since Texas is like 50 times larger than Delaware or Rhode Island. I'm probably never going to all 50 states, since it's a few thousand kilometers to go a Western state, but it's fun anyway

In brief: lots and lots of traffic; lots and lots of shipwrecks. Not a surprise. ...Personally, I'm wondering what the ones in Alberta / Saskatchewan are doing there...even the ones in Manitoba (bits of Lake Winnipeg, the seaport in Churchill) make more sense..

I live in Rhode Island where there are many lighthouses of all shapes and sizes. I was fortunate enough to take a boat tour out on Narragansett Bay to see several from the perspective of being on the water, many close up. What a great day that was!

My kids were obviously being abused by my ex. It was clear. I believe their doctor reported. CPS did nothing. People who are the kind of parents who will spank their kids are often violent abusers. Even if spanking your kids were illegal law enforcement & CPS wouldn’t enforce the law. America is a very dangerous place to be (and particularly Texas) if you are a child with an abusive parent.

They don’t enforce child protective law in the US anyhow. Watch the Trials of Gabriel Gonzalez story on Netflix, please. It’s terrible to think about child abuse but we need a mass awakening & action to make CPS & law enforcement to enforce the law. He was a beautiful little boy who went to school with burns & bruises all over him, including on his head. He was obviously being very seriously abused. May Gabriel Gonzalez rest in peace.

Some of these countries use both year systems, Israel for example uses both the Hebrew and Gergorian (so for buying alcohol or other things, whichever birthday comes first, you can use), and for official government documents, they also ad the Islamic Hegeri, not not for all things, since that lunar calendar does not adjust. Fun fact: in the late 1800s, European colonizers briefly thought there was an inland sea in the Outback that helped sustain the Indigenous population. One expedition sent to look for it (among other things) based on (poorly interpreted) information they got from locals got where they we told to go and found...a dried up vernal pool basin. Which they named Lake Disappointment.

When it comes to the way people think about cartography, the founder of the subreddit believes it's currently going through a period of change.

"The previous generation was accustomed to paper maps that they used to navigate. This required skills in orientation and awareness that are no longer necessary with digital maps on mobile devices. Whilst there are lots of articles that eulogize the loss of these skills, I don't think it's necessarily all bad," he explained.

Nonsense. It's not a map of Berlin, it's part of a map of the former DDR. It is completely normal to not include forreign countries in maps.

I crossed from the blank area into east Berlin. The east was a depressing police state, with people randomly stopped by cops and nothing to eat in stores. The eastern side of the wall was truly frightening, knowing I would be shot for stepping into no man's land.

I watched a very interesting video from 1984 about how to travel by car from West Germany to West Berlin. It was produced by the RMP (Royal Military Police ) for British service members. What was shocking to learn that the British military personnel was forbidden to show their documents to East German soldiers, they were only allowed to communicate with Soviet border guards.

I wish they would flood any and every public ... thing the putin-friends of our furthest right of the relevant parties, the AfD, are conducting, and teach them some common sense. Ok, they're rightwingers leaning well into radical (not all members are radical, but you can't remain a member without at least finding the publicly known radicalism to be acceptable), so we cannot expect them to be of the brightest kind... But I don't see how it requires much thought or thinkability to understand that invading other countries, unprovoked and against every contract, promise and rights, is wrong by any and every means.

I think the overall majority here in Germany isn't against taking in Ukranian refugees, the main issue are immigrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East that make right wing parties all over Europe relevant. That the government doesn't want to acknowledge that not everybody is the same only will result in a bigger rejection of any kind of refugee policy overall. (My perspective as somebody that doesn't stand on any political side)

I volunteered at the railway stations when the war started, as many of them transited Romania, which has the larger border with Ukraine. I'll never forget a girl who got down the bus, realized she was finally safe, and started crying hysterically, repeating to us: "I'll do what you say, I'll go where you want me to - just don't send me back there!!" We later found out that she had been raped several times by invaders, and her mother had been executed. :(

It's not much a "devastation after a fall", more like a slow and steady decline, punctuated by slightly faster decline from sackings from the 5th century onwards. People were not taken in slavery or killed: they mostly just... left. Rome was not self-sufficient for food and with the trade routes from the provinces compromised by loss of control it made more sense for the people to just move to the countryside and make a living in smaller communities. A few plagues (among them the very first appearance of smallpox and measles), killed off some of the population, but that was not specific to Rome and the impact was far smaller than the impact from physiologic depopulation.

I'm from the Black Forest, south west Germany. Public transport is miserable. Sure there are buses, but they may ride only once every 2 hours or so (and only during working hours), and take you only along a certain bus line. Good luck if you have to switch buses 2-3 times to get to a certain place. If you don't have a car, you are lost. (My grandmother once wanted to visit my grandfather in hospital. Stubborn as always, she insisted on taking the bus - on a Sunday - instead of letting us take her the distance of 35 km. It took her all day to get there and back.)

Public transportation sucks so bad in the U.S (in most cities). Once I looked at the options for an appointment and it would have taken me 5 buses and almost 3 hours to get somewhere I was able to drive to in 15-20 mins. Plus add the time to walk to the bus stop because the closest one to me is about 1.5 miles away (2.4 km for everyone else)

We used to have a rail line in this part of Wales, but not any more. We get a bus an hour, and that doesn't go to every nearby village, so they have to hire private buses or taxis to get to the main hourly public bus.

California once had a popular rail line that ran from Pacific Ocean to San Bernardino mountains. Car dealers decided the best way to improve their business was get rid of the trains. So, they approached (bribed, threatened) the city councils with their plan. That railway was dismantled... train cars thrown in Santa Ana river ...tracks paved over to make nice new roads for all the nice new cars. Dealers became wealthy beyond belief.

This map is somewhat incorrect for south africa. If you are gay AND black AND you go into a low-income area you ARE in danger. If however you are white and gay and go anywhere, no one is bothered or interested in you. It's specifically black gay people who are expected to be heteronormative in Africa, and quite often punished for not being so. If you dobut this, note how the rest of the continent is more or less red. The reason SA is green is (a) our constitution prohibits gender discrimination of all forms and (b) we have a large expat and white population which follows western cultural norms. Assuming you are a TRAVELLER from a non-African state, you are quite safe travelling here while gay. You won't be targeted for that reason. HOWEVER if you are a traveller from Africa you must conceal your gender identity.

I find it interesting that Israel is a lighter shade than the US on this, when Israel decriminilzed Homosexuality in the 60s, allowed them in the military in 1982, and Tel-Aviv was ranked the best gay tourist city in the world 4 of the last 10 years and always in the top 5. Has one of the lowest anti-gay hate crime rates in the world, and one of the lowest violent anti-gay crimes rates in the world (only 3 anti-gay homocide hate crimes since 1990, the 2 of them were the same guy, he did the second a few weeks after being let out of prison for his previous one). Regardless of what you think of Israel's politics or policies, for gay tourists, it is one of the best places according to every Metric. Even Israel's secular right wing parties like Likud have openly gay members and are pro-gay rights

Can’t see too well, but the pride in Tel Aviv is legendary. LGBT people from other parts of the Middle East immigrate to Israel because Israel is so safe for gay people. I’m proud of Israel, especially of the people protesting Netanyahu.

The popularity of this subreddit and, in turn, alternative maps, illustrates the way Chris Heffernan, a teacher of 20 years, approaches geography. Heffernan, who is a seventh-grade social science and math teacher at Jefferson Junior High School in Naperville, Illinois, said he no longer thinks about map quizzes when he thinks about geography class, but rather “human geography,” the study of culture, economy, and politics, which ends up affecting all of us.

Many parts of the USA have applied a sports rule for 'justice' - three strikes and you are out. It results in great injustice, where people can be given huge sentences for relatively minor crimes. There is also a very large race component to the sentencing, and poverty.

My state is trying to get funding for a new prison due to overcrowding. House arrest with ankle monitoring is common depending on the crime. It allows the person to still work and be home by a certain time. They auto-dial the home and your monitor needs to be read by the device they leave behind. No set times and they will call late at night just to check. Work release centers keep you locked up unless you are working or given a couple of hours to take care of personal matters. That time is earned with good behavior.

I don't quite understand how it works. If state is paying private company for prisoners, how private company makes profit? Reducing costs? Surely authorities can look into books and figure out where savings are made, turn prisons back to state owned and save profit for tax payers.

Yes. I worked at one briefly. They feed them absolute c**p- wonder bread with American cheese, a slice of bologna, and an apple. They skimp on medical care- not taking people to the hospital until the last minute, having horrible drug formularies where you can't get people the meds they need. Cramming as many people in as possible. Our primary care doc prescribed "drink more water" for everything- headaches, body aches, nausea, anxiety, etc. etc. It was awful.

The only quibble I have with this is 'British Isles'. Eire/the Republic of Ireland most definitely does not agree to this term being used of their country. Eire is not part of the British Isles as Eire is not part of Britain. formally disavowed in September 2005 by the Irish Government when Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern stated: "The British Isles is not an officially recognised term in any legal or inter-governmental sense. It is without any official status.

Because it's a lot easier to get child support and other benefits if the couple is married. I know some people here who had their first child unmarried and had a lot of difficulties with the legal recognition of the father's fatherhood, paternity leave etc., so they decided to marry before having another child. If the social system made it easier to get the same support for all kinds of families, less people would marry - but then again, that's exactly not what conservative governments and administration want.

There’s been an ongoing fight between people who want to explore the countryside, people who hike, ramblers etc but the majority of the land is shut off because it’s deemed as private land, either farms, country estates etc. The stand off has been going on for decades and has been at a stalemate for as long as I can remember.

This is because of the aristocracy and landed twats called lords and viscounts and so on. If you remove the aristocracy or reduce it to just buckingham palace, this will be solved. I was at a village in the UK once. Totally riduclous story: the entire village and surrounds belonged to a so-called lord. He was not there. The castle was disintegrating because he didnt want to pay roof tax, really. Really. But he was still extracting rent from his land users. The landless peasants didn't actually own their own houses. In the 21st century. Sounds like the medieval era. It's gross. And the british exported this system to Africa. We have the same problem here. About 32000 people in SA own almost 70% of the land here. "Farmers". How did they get it? Their ancestors massacred our people with firearms, that's how.

Scotland has quite broad right to roam with the expectation that you behave responsibly. Few exceptions are being adjacent to someone's home, school grounds, farm buildings and things like construction sites - I can happily walk along someone's land as long as I'm not going near their house or leaving mess/making unreasonable amount of noise. It's rather odd to me when folk get all arsey about people harmlessly walking around

The thing is it's not the ramblers that are the problem they respect the land. It is idiots that go onto other people's land and leave their s**t behind they seem to think they are at a festival and leave their tents and all their rubbish they start fires and it's the land owners that have to clean it up. So they stop everyone using their land because a minority ruin it for others.

Exactly, I did not mind respectful dog walkers and families roaming through our land. I was still ok with it when people camped on our land as long as they collected their rubbish. But local builders decided a bit of woodland behind our house is excellent spot to dump building waste including asbestos. Council had no desire to try catch them and fine them, we had to pay for removal. Now everything is fenced off.

I have land and don’t want random people to just have access to it. Be a nightmare. I have a pond and river access if someone asks to fish or hunt 90 percent of the time I say go ahead. I have had to pick up beer bottles and ask they don’t keep fish from the pond. But usually it’s a couple teens or a dad and child that barely leave footprints. Had problems with people poaching and destructive partying on my grandparents place which is no where near me and 5 times larger and harder to watch.

I’m afraid a lot of people didn’t get the meaning of this map. It’s not that intuitive, don’t forget to factor debt in (net wealth). You may have a good income of 100k euros/dollars and a negative wealth at this point in your life (student debt, initial investment in your own company, etc.) Some countries like indebtedness more than others. That’s how you get Italy in dark green and Germany in yellow.

A culture of savings and being homeowners is probably the key of this map. For my father: at least one year of incomes saved and being owner of your house was the basis of feeling economically stable.

The map suggests that Italians are wealthier than Swiss people, that Germans and Bulgarians have a similar amount of savings as your average Saudi or Cypriote (all of them a LOT less than the Italians), and that the Greek have more than any nordic/Scandinavian citizen except for the Icelanders. I'm not sure how that data was acquired (apparently by Crédit Suisse, so maybe it reflects their pool of clients?), but I highly doubt the validity/general applicability.

Don't let the numbers for Germany and Poland fool you. They are the ones who took in the most refugees (1,055,323 and 1,563,386 respectively), and it is those refugee who skew the numbers. Violet is the only humane option. Illegal for the buyers. Sex work is almost always a form of abuse, not of empowerment and since it's near impossible to find out which sex worker is coerced and which one does it on their own free will (for the authorities AND the buyers in equal measure!) punishing the buyers is the only way. Also when someone is paying for sex they can't tell if the prostitute is being forced and thus they're ok with possibly committing rape.

Green is the only humane option. There isn't a logical reason why two consenting adults shouldn't be allowed to exchange money for sex.

South Africa is currently red, but will go green soon. In the comment that follows, "she" is used to designate female-presenting persons, however male-presenting and intersex persons also sell sex here. The rationale for us moving to legalisation is that if you legalise it then people who are trafficked can get law enforcement support, and report trafficking and or customers who do not stop when told to stop. If selling is legal and buying is not, you simply enable pimps to continue and make buyers conceal their activities, which still keeps it underground and encourages cash transactions which are not traceable or taxable. If the transactions can be done in the clear with digital payments, you can then track sellers and buyers and do health interventions for both. We also have the world's highest HIV stats so this is important. In SA we now mostly sell sex on websites and women sign up individually. You can tell she's being pimped if she doesn't answer her own phone and/or engage individually, or if there is a common phone number for more than one seller. Obviously in those cases one should avoid since usually it is a pimp (male) behind it, who is trafficking the worker.

There is almost always a pimp behind a prostitute. Women who sell their bodies are extremely prone to violence from their 'customers', even the ones with pimps. A woman on her own would be at an incredible risk of getting a used and murdered- it happens A LOT to sex workers.

Red just looks like another way of taxing prostitution while the government maintains the appearance of being "moral". Assuming the punishment is *just* fines of course. I mean if you look at at 8 euro fine as the max punishment (in Ukraine) then just charge 8 euro more and you're set.

    Jason Boyd

There are many different ways of managing prostitution shown here. We should review these systems and find out which ones cause the least harm to people and the most benefit to society. Then, using evidence, we select the right ones. Layers of society and religious evolution make this a very messy area to regulate and we need to put that aside and make a decision based on evidence, not beliefs. There are a lot of opinions here being presented as absolutes.

I see this a tad ... different. I'd not hesitate defend every european border that surrounds an area of humanism against any attack of less humanist invaders. I'd link it to ideas and values more than to country, because that's what really counts. But, if I'd be able to supply a service that's of value there, why not? If I were a Russian, given that I know and feel what I do now as a german, I would certainly NOT fight "for my country", but either get my a*s into safety, or get my a*s into Ukraine's service.

Considering that (Western) Germany felt a lot of remorse for its unforgivable deeds in WWII and the main narrative to never ever engage into a war (right up into the 2000s) I'm not surprised that Germany seems reluctant to engage into a battle. Considering that until today appreciating their own army (speaking of former W.GER) is low in the public and soldiers immediately being prosecuted when expressing to much love for 'their motherland' and former military leaders (not Hitler or his leading bunch, mind you!) I'm not surprised that the will to fight for this land us so low.

Yep. Spanish North Africa, five small areas, in special relationship with the Spanish government, on and off the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. They are Alhucemas, Ceuta, the Chafarinas Islands, Melilla (qq.v.), and Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, with a combined area of about 12 square miles (31 square km). Ceuta is administered as part of Cádiz province, the rest as part of Málaga province.

Very interesting. Just goes to show that being left-leaning (if you really want to call the Democrats "left" compared to say, Europe)... doesn't mean you aren't propping up some kind of dodgy system built on oppression. Unless I'm reading it wrong? Darker blue means more african-americans imprisoned, right?

Until somewhat recently most white democrats were pro police. Being "tough on crime" is something that a lot of democrat politicians had as part of their political platform. Smart phones and social media showing videos of brutality is part of why that has shifted. It's still very baked into our system and culture to be pro punishment. And the system itself was founded on racist principles carried over from slavery. It's good to see the cultural shift starting but systemic shifts are a lot harder and slower.

Montana has one of the lowest population percentages of Black people in the US and most of that limited diversity (just .5%) is located around an airforce base. So we''re at the lower end 2nd tier (still bad) likely because there just isnt a lot of people in the demographic to incarcerate, not because our justice system is better or worse than other states. I'm not sure what accurate conclusions regarding racism in incarnation by location are supposed to drawn by this map since there are other factors to consider like at minimum population percentages.

Fred is correct, but also, no-one *landed* at Dunkirk. That was the port from which the BEF and some allied forces escaped from in 1940. The D-Day invasion was focused on Normandy, around the coast roughly from Cherbourg to Le Havre.

Next large-ish spark to the upper-right of that is Gauteng, about 14m people. Red patch to the righthand side, with the yellow dot (Durban/Ethekwini), 22m people - mostly the Zulu nation.

This is because the human need for freedom is too big to make it punishable by law. This does not mean that you won't be searched for and reincarcerated when found, though. It just means that you won't be also prosecuted for escaping from jail.

Not a crime because "This is because we believe that the natural urge of a person to be free is too great to link it to a criminal offense" (Google translate). I wonder, by that metric, how anything can be deemed a crime, if my defense is, "I couldn't help myself, the natural urge was too strong" .

Technically speaking the government deprives people of their freedom when they imprison them, and freedom is a fundamental right. The compromise to the conundrum is to not prosecute the escapee for fleeing. They still get put back to prison (if caught, obviously) for their original crime, and their options to an earlier release for good conduct are cancelled/more restricted

Agree, 1 in 5 does seem high. But a decent proportion of the older population will have a working knowledge of French, because it was a compulsory subject at high school level. My father, who completed high school (and would be in his eighties if he was alive), could carry out a conversation in French. My mother, who didn't, cannot.

Maybe not. The american industrial-military complex is mostly confined to american suppliers. Military funding ends up in large part to american companies and american jobs. Not saying Americans shouldn't tone it down a bit, but the military in the USA is a huge internal money mover, so it should theoretically improve economy and private wealth, plus it is a net exporter so it should bring in large revenues from third party countries. Unfortunately, the wealth stops at the higher echelons of the pyramids.

Most memorable line: "I never had to unbuckle a dead person's seatbelt.' There's room to live when you're held inside the vehicle, not so much when you're ejected.

I find these maps to be propaganda. The people making them and gathering the stats tend to use anglophone political ideas which lean towards neoliberalism, or libertarianism, none of which actually cater for upliftment of the poor but rather focus on individualism and liberty to pursue profit. So I always cast a skeptical eye at them and say well OBVIOUSLY britain and its allies are the most democratic (meantime they are literally monarchies!!)... so ya, I call b******t on this. Turkey sure, we know it's a dictatorship. Same for Russia and Belarus. But Italy? Portugal? Greece?. They are democracies. Democracies are NOT defined by things like quality of public service or corruption. They are defined by 2 criteria: DO the people vote for their govts and IF the govt is voted out, DOES it leave willingly? IF you use MY definition of democracy, we can see USA is NOT a democracy because the Electoral College & crying "rigged election" ala Trump. So naaaah.

Not all jews support the israeli apartheid government. Jews can't be antisemitic. Israel is an apartheid state. This is the view of the south african state. In SA we do have many jews, and they are split between zionists and the liberation forces. It is unfortunate that the jews were bullied in WW2 and almost genocided out of existence, and then once they have power, backed by the west out of their own guilt for failing to anticipate just how badly hitler was going to go,.... they now support israel blindly and mindlessly no matter how much it bullies others. I now the story of "if israel didn't arm itself it wouldn't exist, etc". That's no longer true. The majority of the arabic states want to make money. China is involved. It's just money now. The who-owns-religious sites thing is b******t. The UN must control the ROCK and its monuments and it must be open to all. PS before you s**t on me, I have jewish family, so NO. UpupaEpops

Autonomous regions almost always have some legislative rights. So for example, an autonomous region can decide that in that specific region, there will be an extra official language that everyone in the region has to know. (so for example in the so-called Basque Country both Spanish and Basque would be mandatory. -I don't know if that's the case, just used Spain as an example) They can also decide how to spend the money allocated to them without having to defer to the capital of the country. They would not have a right to make decisions on foreign policy, military, police, etc.

    UpupaEpops

To add to my previous comment, the reason "Spain is so f****d up" is that while most European countries are named after the ethnic majority of a country, the reality is that most, if not all countries have many historic ethnic groups that struggle greatly to be accepted and treated as equal. Check out the history of the Saami for example. Regional autonomy should (in theory) give some protections to these ethnic groups so they do not disappear off the face of the earth.

An autonomous region is a region which lies within the borders of a country but does not always conduct its affairs like the rest of that country. You know, like Florida.

    Christof Irran
    Community Member
2 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

An autonomous region is a (formerly) linguistically and culturally distinct region that was arbitrarily split politically, most often as a consequence of a (lost) war, and the components incorporated into separate political countries or nations. See Suedtirol - the southern part of Tirol was taken from Austria after WW1 and made part of Italy, the rest remained with Austria. Since then the German speaking population of Suedtirol has dwindled, yet the region remains culturally distinct from Italy.

    Susie Elle
    Community Member

An autonomous region is simply that, a region that has a certain degree of autonomy and freedom from external authorities. This roughly means they have a say in parallel to the main authorities. Sometimes this is based on historical evolution, like Northern Ireland, sometimes it's because of a minority wishing to be seen as a nationality. Unique languages and separate laws can be involved as well. Sometimes it's recognized worldwide, sometimes it isn't. It heavily depends on the area, so therefore I wouldn't say it's comparable to states and provinces.

My commute was 36 km. There is no passenger rail in my area. The bus stop nearest my house is 8 km away, a 90 minute walk...in areas with no sidewalks. The bus ride (including stops and transfers) would take several hours. So, my commuting time for one day of work (8 hour shift) would be another 8 hour shift. Longer during the winter, as I'd be trudging through snowbanks. It's not remotely feasible to do this.

Car reliance is a direct result of car manufacturers and dealers :cough: influencing :cough: politicians to increase profit. It happened in California, where a cabal of dealerships took down a popular rail line between mountains and beaches.

USA should be orange at least. Never know when you might get shot by a random incel or teenager with an AR15. At least the other countries they don't really have lots of guns, certainly not 2:1 guns:people and certainly not concealed carry. I mean outside war zones. I imagine that the terrorism stats for Europe are the reason but it's still rare, it works out at something like 280 people per annum for the whole of europe. Compare to 48,830 people dead from guns in USA - JUST LAST YEAR. Even if you accept that 60% of that is suicide, you still have 19532 dead from homicide etc. STILL 70x more likely to die violently in USA than Europe.

You are right about the hugely increased gun risk (although to be fair I lived in one of the largest cities for 25 years and never saw a gun, so as bad as it is, the reality isn't like the reputation), but the map is targeted at people already in the US and is meant to convey information about going elsewhere (blue meaning nothing related to level of caution required).

Hard to grasp, but that is truly a landslide victory, and they already had endured four years of trickle down BS. "Reaganomics" is literally what threw a few dozen million people into poverty, and yet, they STILL do the propaganda, and it STILL works.

It’s not something I advertise often as I’m fairly apolitical now, but when I was a kid in California the 80s, my family was proudly Republican. I’d have told you I was a Republican if you’d asked me in the 80s. By the time the 90s hit, I was becoming disenchanted; Ross Perrot fascinated me as an “independent”. Now, Republicans are nearly unrecognizable from what they were in the 80s, and the few times I HAVE voted in my life, I sure as hell haven’t been voting Republican…

Since nearly all states are stupidly winner takes all, the county by county map gives a better idea of this election: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_United_States_presidential_election#/media/File:1984_United_States_presidential_election_results_map_by_county.svg

I hate Ohio. I live there. I get shït from people for not being a right wing. At least I don't push my views on people, I actually try to be fair about it and not really take an obvious side and just point out flaws on both sides as a solution.

Not only does this not include the sport, but it doesn't even get the year right since this is from 2022.
