OK, so I don't know what academia uses as a word count BUT touch typing word per minute count is 5 characters per word, therefore if the word is army plus a space bar before the next word, it counts as one full word. Commas, full stops etc all count as characters. So my advice is always type your submissions....if there is anyone left who doesn't that is.
