I've seen people (and admittedly been that person) who have used FaceTime to show someone something in a store. That I think is mildly acceptable so long as it's not a prolonged conversation and doesn't actively show other people in the store not included in your call on the camera.

Sorry, I use my phone for business, and if I have to type an email and fill out an order while talking to a client, I will do that. Plus when talking on earpods every person thinks you are talking to them, unless you have your phone in your hand or you hold your ear like Uhura.

That is very true. People need to realize public is public. People will be talking, talking on their phones, doing stuff. It's like society now expects everyone to be absolutely quiet when they're out. Very unreasonable. I use my earpods to listen to music. I've tried using them for calls but the people on the other end complain they can't hear me well, so I have to take the call off bluetooth. Most of the time I'm just listening to music. Then people get annoyed that I'm listening to music on my earpods and not listening to them yammer on about something. People don't know what they want anymore.

That disabilities don’t check for proof of age before affecting someone - you can be any age and disabled, and that not all disabilities are immediately externally visible.

TRUTH. So so many times we park our SUV in handicapped parking and get out to glares and people yelling ( despite our very visible placard) that we can't park there because we are clearly both fine...only to have them turn red faced as we unload our wheelchair bound child from the back.

People don't bother looking for a disabled sticker, just like they don't bother looking at the back windscreen when parking behind a van that has a hoist, to read the sticker that says 'don't park within 1.2M'. My mum lost it at numerous people when they blocked the hoist for my brother's wheelchair. All of them just gave her this blank stare, as if they still didn't get it.

46 year old chronic pain endurer here. I've been dealing with it since at least 40. I hate the "what are you going to do when you get older" question that I get constantly. Man, I ask myself that very question about 10 times every hour. My response has become a very terse, "Be permanently disabled." I may be "young", but my pain is no joke. It'll bring you to tears. I know this because I can't stop bawling on the one day every few years when I actually get complete relief. Regarding visibility, I would rather not show you how bad I hurt. A lot of days, that's not really an option. I want to be in good humor about it, but it's so dominant that I'm often in no mood to laugh.

My daughter is in her 20s, uses a cane. She gets a lot of side eyes and staring from people. She's been told "Why are you walking with a cane? You look too young." It makes her a bit self-conscious, like she's being judged or has to explain herself.

When you move from a place that has regular snow and ice winters to a place where snow is rare, your first snowstorm is always an adventure. I had never seen more 4-wheel drives sliding through intersections, unable to stop, having cockily assumed that they could drive the regular speed and then stop at a light just because they had 4-wheel drive. Similarly, the hysteria of people buying up all the bread and milk in stores was a sight to see.

As a kid, I once argued with someone about penguins. They didn’t know penguins are birds so we placed a bet, googled to confirm that they are in fact birds, and then I took the money to buy lunch in the canteen the next day. I told the canteen lady that I won my lunch money by placing a bet on penguins being birds. To my surprise she also denied them being birds. So I made another bet - if google says they are birds, I get my lunch for free.
At that time I’ve only discussed penguins being birds with two people. So what I thought was common knowledge appeared not to be.
Sometimes I wonder how many people out there doesn’t know that penguins are birds. And if I can meet them to place bets or get free food.

That you give your seat up on the bus/subway etc for the elderly, humans with small children, humans with crutches/walkers/canes and humans with a lot of heavy looking bags (to name a few).
Be greatfull that you can stand. One day you may wish someone would be kinder to you than you have others in the past.

59 yo and i still give up my seat to other 'categories'. Only once in a while a seat will be given up to me by younger people. After all it is hard to spot if another passenger needs a seat if your eyes are glued to your smartphone.

Be grateful that you can stand.... Would you say that to someone whose job requires them to stand/walk around all day. Does it even occur to you that people who work all day or even night, sometimes in two or three jobs, could simply be completely exhausted and tired. I think Europe is only considered separate from Asia because white people wanted it to be separate. Looking at a map, all the continents except Europe and Asia are almost independent of each other. North and South America are only joined by a sliver of land. Africa and Asis are only joined by a sliver of land. Australia and Antarctica are not joined to any other continent. Europe and Asia share a large border.

This comment has to have been made by a 15 year old. Firstly, white people are and always have been the minority race in the world. Secondly, the concept of continents evolved from the Ancient Greek division of the world they knew, so by definition it includes distinct Asia and Europe. That the seasons are reversed in the northern and southern hemispheres.
As an Australian, this is a fact we all know from a very young age. When I first went overseas at age 16, I quickly learnt that many, many people (including full grown adults) in the northern hemisphere have no idea about this.

If the raise takes you from just under one tax bracket to just over the next, and comes with added responsibilities, you might question if the change in take-home pay is worth it. As in effect there may not be a big a rise as you think. In other words, ask for a bigger pay raise to make the net income worth the responsibility. You'll still get more money though.

When I became a wheelchair user, I thought “wheelchairs don’t do stairs” was common knowledge. So imagine my shock when I started coming across people who thought 3-5 steps would still be considered “wheelchair accessible.”
This is why we need to be super specific when asking if a place is wheelchair accessible. We need to ask if there is step-free access. “Oh yeah, we are wheelchair accessible, there are just one or two steps” isn’t an acceptable answer.

Nothing says unwelcome like having to go through a garbage filled alley to the kitchen entrance to go in. I have traveled in Argentina, Japan, France, and England. I was actually shocked at how inaccessible so many restaurants and venues were in these countries. Never mind entering the place through the alley, there is absolutely no accessible entrance at all. Oh, and please don't hope you're going to be able to access the restroom either as that will be down a flight of stairs in the basement. This is not a complaint, just an observation. The older a city, the more difficult it is to make existing structures accessible. I get that. Also, the US is not a shining example of accessibility across the board either as this post indicates. However, I think the whole world has a lot of work to do regarding making life better for differently abled individuals.

1-2 seps might be okay for some smaller people in really lightweight chairs, but are not fit for purpose for most. The size of the Great Lakes. The number of people who just don't believe that you can't see across most of Lake Michigan. Or that the lakes can produce any kind of waves at all, let alone of ship-sinking size. A friend was going to a wedding in the Upper Peninsula and told me they were also going to spend a day kayaking around Lake Superior. I said "Cool! What part?" And they looked at me like I was an idiot and said "All the way around? I've got a whole day." I wish I were kidding.

How to properly train and own a dog. The amount of people who know nothing about dogs is baffling to me. The belief of alpha hierarchy has been proven false in both dogs and wolves for over 20 years by researchers. Yet, people still use it and recommend it as a form of training. It’s proven harmful. This leads to fearful and aggressive dogs.
There is a TON of ignorant dog owners. Not only do they spread false information, they don’t even bother fact checking themselves.
The reason why dogs end up in shelters is because of BOTH irresponsible breeding and irresponsible/uneducated owners.

The whole 'alpha' thing came from a studied, disproved by the person who did the study in the first place. He did it by studying random captured wolves in captivity. So it was the same as if you studied prisoners and decided that was an accurate representation of all human behavior. In reality, wolf packs are family units. Yes! Recently medical researchers have discovered there is an immune system organ in the nose that acts as the first line of defense when breathing in a virus. Cold dry air makes that organ not function, thus making the invading virus more successful at causing the common cold. Even just being in very dry air can make that organ less effective. No one prepares these types of food themselves anymore - it's all store bought. And just like the entry about not knowing meat was dead animal flesh - who was going to teach them? Does anyone even TALK about food sources anymore? My grandmother grew her own cukes and pickled 'em, as well as prepared her own coleslaw and pickled beets. We lived in the suburbs, but could easily reach rural areas with a short drive, so were able to buy meat and vegetables at the farms they were grown on. Not to mention being able to pick wild strawberries and blueberries every summer. None of these experiences are in any way available to most people today (at least in the US).

Only in America is "A pickle" an individual thing. Elsewhere it's a generic term that can be applied to a variety of things, so Branston is a pickle, so is piccalilli. The vegetable most commonly used in the US is a variety of cucumber, in Europe we have others in various sizes but call them pickled gherkins or cornichons, with a couple of languages having different words for slightly different sizes/varieties.

It depends, I once paid a vendor in a Montreal park in USD, can't remember whether they had a sign saying they accepted them, or I asked politely, but either way I was happy to get rid of them (I am neither Canadian nor from the US) and the vendor was happy to accept them.

"Obamacare" is essentially what the Senate Republicans proposed in the 1990s to counter Bill and Hillary's health care proposals. So it should be called "Dolecare" after GOP Senate leader Bob Dole. But after Dole did all those Viagra commercials, Dolecare seems to have been removed to another context.

I live at around 7,500 feet (2286 meters). Water boils quite a bit cooler here than at sea level. Up here, I stick my finger in the water to see if it is close to boiling. Much harder when I visit my family.

So many people don't realize that calories = energy. Yes, you can have too many calories, but if you don't get enough your body starts performing at less capacity. Having a certain amount of calories a day is very good for you, its really the vitamins and sugars and nutrients that are what you need to be putting in your body/monitoring more than the calories.

That cows have to be kept repeatedly pregnant to continue producing milk- too many people think that cows are just always making milk and it somehow "needs to be relieved" when their udders are full.

I believe the amount of milk produced each day will start to drop off, so the cow will produce more milk if they calve about once a year. However, cows DO produce a lot of milk each day, and without a calf to drink it, will need to be milked. Also, this keeps the volume up. Ask a nursing mother if she feels pain when she is full for confirmation.

The key is that the process starts with a pregnancy. Producing milk is not their natural state. Yes, once you take the calf they may experience some discomfort from not being milked, but their supply would also dry up the same as a humans if they weren't milked.

I suspect it's because that isn't true of humans. We can keep producing milk so long as it is expressed or they are nursing. Hence nature led weaning moms who have 3,4, and 5 year olds still breast feeding. Cows on the other hand stop producing after 9 months and need to have another calf to start the milk back up

Getting an IV does not mean a needle is left inside you while that IV is in place.
While I don't expect everyone to know this, I continue to be surprised that people who actively have IVs in place do not know this.

Edit: just to clarify more, the needle pierces the vein then the catheter is advanced further into the vein and the needle is removed, that long needle isn’t going all the way in your vein.

Once in hospital, they put me on an IV and gave me laxatives. After some time the obvious happened, and I had to either rip out my IV or sh*t the bed. I ripped out the IV, and boy, does that also make a hell of a mess. I covered the hallway with blood all the way to the toilet. And still sh*t myself before I made it there. Not my finest hour. Oops. 🤷♂️

Not sure who's downvoting you , or why, but yes, most of South America is East of most of North America, there's only a very small overlap. Also, of course, when the clocks go back in one hemisphere they go forward in the other, so actual time differences can change by 2 hours at a time.

Thin doesn’t mean healthy. You could be what the BMI chart considers to be a healthy weight, but that’s just weight. You still need to eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle; weight isn’t the only indicator of health, but the number of thin/average weight people who eat [badly] but don’t understand why they feel bad is alarming.

I lived on a diet of white flour bread, sugared cereal, few vegetables, and over cooked meat. I drank sodas all day long. By the time I was 26, I had hypoglycemia, screwed up adrenal glands, skin infections, chronic muscle aches, and sinus infections. It took years of eating a healthy diet to recover.

A friend was thrown out of the Marines because his BMI said he was obese. The reality was, he was the minimum height, and wider than average. His body fat was around 3%, but his weight was too high for his height, so he was obviously fat and out of shape. According to the BMI charts anyway.

Then don't. They are a very beneficial plant. They help with biodiversity and the bee population. The young leaves are good in salads. The flowers and roots can be used to make tea. My dad even made wine from the flowers years ago. It wasn't until post-WWII that people started getting so obsessed with keeping pristine lawns, soaked in herbicides that get washed into our water sources.

I don't get the people who are in the opposite lane that slow down and pull over when there is absolutely nothing blocking the emergency vehicle in their own lane. Do they think they are going to veer into the opposite lane for the fun of it? I also don't understand the people who will avoid a pedestrian or bicycle by veering far into the opposing lane to avoid them - when there is a car already occupying that lane, but that's another discussion.

That depends on whether there is a solid median or not. If there is a solid median, opposing traffic does not have to respond unless the emergency vehicle is using a designated turning lane. If there is no solid median, then they should stop/pull over in case the emergency vehicle has to use the opposing lane to dodge idiots or go around stopped traffic at an intersection, and if they need to turn onto a side street from the turning lane.

This was when I was still working. I got out of work and on my home. Came upon a four stop. I was first in line going east. No one was moving I glanced to my right and left. Didn't see anything so I proceeded to go. As I went through the stop sign all of a sudden I hear a blast from my right. I look back and seen a ambulance coming down the road. It was quite a ways down the road. If I had looked better and noticed it I would have waited but since I was already partway through the intersection I kept right on going.

Local bird species. I grew up in a family that loved birdwatching, whenever we saw a bird they would refer to it by its name. For example, we wouldn’t just say there were birds on the feeder, we would say that there were goldfinches and grosbeaks on the feeder, etc. I am no expert, but I thought that knowing some common species was as normal as knowing some common dog breeds. Hearing that someone doesn’t know what a junco looks like, for me feels like someone saying they don’t know what a husky looks like.

I grew up very interested in animals and reading loads about them. It’s so surprising how little other people know. A very bright business woman friend showed some of us a photo of a bird she saw on a fence while driving (her son took the photo) to ask what it was. It was a buzzard. They are *really* common around here and I was incredibly surprised she didn’t know and hadn’t been interested to ask until now.

The Legislature creates or changes laws, and the branch that controls funding.
The Executive or President is final approval of law and who then enforces the laws, and also the branch that runs the Government.
The Judicial Branch with our Legal system is the ones who determine if a law should stay or should be removed from the books. They also able to overrule the Executive if they feel a law is not being enforced.
They all have roles, ALL of them, not just the President. That is why he is not and cannot be an absolute ruler or King. 🙈🤷♂️
… and this IS as good thing, regardless of who the president might be.

Talking of Kings, a lot people seem to think that the monarch has absolute power in the UK and that the UK isn't democratic. The UK is a constitutional monarchy meaning that the monarch has very little to no power over how the country is run, and hasn't had for centuries. We even executed a king for treason because he believed he wasn't answerable to Parliament. Our laws are made by elected members of Parliament. We do have an elected leader, called the Prime Minister and even they aren't unanswerable. Another general election must be called within five years of their appointment. Several Prime Ministers have been forced to resign because of their conduct. While in theory the monarch has to give royal assent to make a bill an Act of Parliament, in practice they would never refuse and this is considered more of a formality these days. The last monarch to do so was Queen Anne in 1708, and she only did that on the advice of ministers.

That human bodily fluids contain germs and other disgusting gunk, which can in turn linger on public surfaces.
This after a co-worker touched an elevator button and proceeded to immediately dig the insides of his nose. I told him, you never know where the hands of the previous person could've been - up scratching his armpits, picking up some slimy [stuff], etc - before touching that same button.
And it's just ewwww that he would touch the same surfaces before putting it inside his nose.
His response - "*That can't be. If we can't see those germs then there's probably nothing there*."
Even before Covid, I've always avoided touching elevator buttons, door handles, etc with my fingers and used my elbows instead. If I had no choice, I would at least remember to avoid putting it in my mouth, nose or eyes before washing my hands.

I can teven tell you how many ignorant people would tell me "masks dont work unless everyone is wearing them", and I would have to say "I wear one to keep myself from touching my nose and mouth accidentally while out in public because I am immunocompromised, and at 40+ I can't handle illnesses anymore". We might need to go back to teaching the internet. This sounds odd, but hear me out. When it first came out, obviously no one knew how it worked except a few who bothered to learn. Then, around when I was a young kid (Gen Z), we had classes in the computer rooms where we learned how to use word, basic internet, common shortcuts etc. Every week we'd go up, sometimes we'd have tests, just like a normal subject. So, for my classes all through highschool, because of this, everyone who was with me in primary school knew how to properly use a computer, building upon foundations themselves with more complicated things, instead of figuring out how to go to a website. They don't do them anymore, and it shows. Many kids, having no foundation, end up not learning anything at all. It's really difficult to learn how to use the internet, and anything online!

With technology, people often only learn to use the things they need to know. I have rudimentary skills because I don't work in a field that requires more. In fact if there is something I need to do, often I have a work around using programs I do know how to use. The kids I teach know how to search for colouring pages on google and then are at different stages of learning to copy and paste them to word so they can be printed, because that's what they are interested in. Many don't know much beyond this, though they are taught to use email, blogs, write documents etc at different levels in school. My grandad retired from teaching around the time computers became commonplace. He had learned to use electric typewriters and various other technologies in order to teach his students, as time went on, but because he was no longer teaching, he decided he didn't need to learn to use a computer. He got through another 3+ decades using an electric typewriter or having us type his notes into a computer.

in domesticated dogs, the social hierarchy is fluid based on immediate needs and opportunity, and is constantly being reevaluated and adjusted to. what people assume is "alpha dominance" in a group of dogs is just a dog atm displaying more confidence in its surroundings and prioritizing its needs, be it resources or instincts. humans are the "pack leader" because they are the ones in control or in possession of the dog's priorities. this is how we domesticated them to begin with...and are able to teach them silly tricks.

“Tucking in” the string when you put in a tampon. My mom advised me to do that the very first time I wore one, so that 1) it would be possible to go to the bathroom without having to take the tampon out, and 2) there’s no risk of the string sticking out in a bathing suit.

While we're on the subject of periods, if you're taking hormone contraception that stop your periods, the blood doesn't "go" anywhere. Blood from periods is the lining of the uterus breaking down, so if you're taking hormone contraception, then this stops the lining building up to begin with, and therefore means a fertilised egg can't implant, hence no period. I've met a suprising number of adult women who seem to think that the moment they stop taking contraception all of the blood from their missed periods is suddenly going to come out like their uterus has just been storing it up.

If you have PCOS, then you can have a long build up, and very heavy periods that last weeks to months. So, the lining can build up in some people, and it is easy to understand how they could confuse that with a medicinal hormone that stops periods. (Mine were 6 months apart and then I bled for 3-6weeks)

It comes from how the stomach is physically sideways, and when laying on the left, the esophageal sphincter which is on the right side of the stomach is higher up. It does work for those with sensitivity issues and acid reflux like me.

Kettles can be used for far more than tea though. Especially if you have electric stoves so it's faster to boil water in the kettle before putting it on the stove (though I believe this isn't the case in the US where kettles have less voltage or something).
