We grow up in different circumstances, and it's impossible for everyone to develop the same worldview. Still, for society to function, we expect certain stuff to be universally understood — fundamental facts that people can agree on and rely on. But that isn't always the case.

Reddit user JustBeingElara recently asked the platform what common knowledge they realized wasn't so common.

Thousands replied, sharing etiquette rules, marketing tricks, basic biology, and much more, teaching each other all sorts of useful things. So we decided to collect the most interesting ones for those who love to learn!

The really sad part is Donald Trump made it acceptable to express one's psycho personality and the conservative media jumped on the bandwagon to celebrate and normalize all that psychotic behavior.

I am so sick of hearing that someone is a good christian. This says nothing about what they are really like. I am a fantastic atheist and I also try to treat other people kindly.

My parents were "good Christians" in a "good" church, but the judge decided mom was a child abbuser and dad was a ped0phile and both did jail time, while also both handed their children out to church people who molested them... So yeah.

Penn Jillette - "The question I get asked by religious people all the time is, 'Without God, what's to stop me from r@ping all I want?' And my answer is, 'I *do* r@pe all I want. And the amount I want is Zero. And I *do* murd3r all I want, and the amount I want is Zero.' The fact that these people think that if they didn't have this person watching over them that they would go on k!lling, r@ping rampages is the most self-d@mning thing I can imagine." I've seen people (and admittedly been that person) who have used FaceTime to show someone something in a store. That I think is mildly acceptable so long as it's not a prolonged conversation and doesn't actively show other people in the store not included in your call on the camera.

Sorry, I use my phone for business, and if I have to type an email and fill out an order while talking to a client, I will do that. Plus when talking on earpods every person thinks you are talking to them, unless you have your phone in your hand or you hold your ear like Uhura.

That is very true. People need to realize public is public. People will be talking, talking on their phones, doing stuff. It's like society now expects everyone to be absolutely quiet when they're out. Very unreasonable. I use my earpods to listen to music. I've tried using them for calls but the people on the other end complain they can't hear me well, so I have to take the call off bluetooth. Most of the time I'm just listening to music. Then people get annoyed that I'm listening to music on my earpods and not listening to them yammer on about something. People don't know what they want anymore.

People don't bother looking for a disabled sticker, just like they don't bother looking at the back windscreen when parking behind a van that has a hoist, to read the sticker that says 'don't park within 1.2M'. My mum lost it at numerous people when they blocked the hoist for my brother's wheelchair. All of them just gave her this blank stare, as if they still didn't get it.

46 year old chronic pain endurer here. I've been dealing with it since at least 40. I hate the "what are you going to do when you get older" question that I get constantly. Man, I ask myself that very question about 10 times every hour. My response has become a very terse, "Be permanently disabled." I may be "young", but my pain is no joke. It'll bring you to tears. I know this because I can't stop bawling on the one day every few years when I actually get complete relief. Regarding visibility, I would rather not show you how bad I hurt. A lot of days, that's not really an option. I want to be in good humor about it, but it's so dominant that I'm often in no mood to laugh.

When you move from a place that has regular snow and ice winters to a place where snow is rare, your first snowstorm is always an adventure. I had never seen more 4-wheel drives sliding through intersections, unable to stop, having cockily assumed that they could drive the regular speed and then stop at a light just because they had 4-wheel drive. Similarly, the hysteria of people buying up all the bread and milk in stores was a sight to see.

Hand signals - a right turn (arm straight out), a left turn (arm out and moving in forward circles), and slowing down or stopping (arm out and moving up and down) - are still part of the Highway Code in the UK and in theory you need to know them for your theory test.

In US (where we drive on the right side of the road, not the left), I was taught the hand signals were: stopping (arm out w/elbow bent, hand UP); left turn (arm out straight out); right turn (arm out w/elbow bent, hand pointing DOWN w/palm facing the driver behind you); Or was it ... yeah, no one knows anymore.

Adorable penguin standing on snowy ground with wings spread, illustrating fascinating common knowledge facts. As a kid, I once argued with someone about penguins. They didn’t know penguins are birds so we placed a bet, googled to confirm that they are in fact birds, and then I took the money to buy lunch in the canteen the next day. I told the canteen lady that I won my lunch money by placing a bet on penguins being birds. To my surprise she also denied them being birds. So I made another bet - if google says they are birds, I get my lunch for free.
At that time I’ve only discussed penguins being birds with two people. So what I thought was common knowledge appeared not to be.

Sometimes I wonder how many people out there doesn’t know that penguins are birds. And if I can meet them to place bets or get free food.

I'm pretty sure I've posted this here before, but I once spent a good half hour arguing with a coworker who wouldn't believe that I could know penguins have feathers even though I've never touched one. Apparently, the fact that they're birds isn't good enough because they're not "proper birds".

Does it even occur to you that people who work all day or even night, sometimes in two or three jobs, could simply be completely exhausted and tired. I think Europe is only considered separate from Asia because white people wanted it to be separate. Looking at a map, all the continents except Europe and Asia are almost independent of each other. North and South America are only joined by a sliver of land. Africa and Asis are only joined by a sliver of land. Australia and Antarctica are not joined to any other continent. Europe and Asia share a large border.

This comment has to have been made by a 15 year old. Firstly, white people are and always have been the minority race in the world. Secondly, the concept of continents evolved from the Ancient Greek division of the world they knew, so by definition it includes distinct Asia and Europe. It’s not like the concept was first defined and then they tried to find the boundaries. People didn't divide people into racial categories back then.

I got mugged by some lads in Portugal. I thought they were drinking buddies. They were not, and I was in danger. I was alone and there were five of them. I was being dumb. Not badly hurt, but I lost a few hundred euros. Will not make that mistake again.

Especially if you are a white English speaking male i in China. That "cute friendly girl" isn't infatuated with you, doesn't want to practice her English with you over a quick drink. Globe showing Asia and Australia in warm colors, illustrating pieces of common knowledge that surprise many people. That the seasons are reversed in the northern and southern hemispheres.

As an Australian, this is a fact we all know from a very young age. When I first went overseas at age 16, I quickly learnt that many, many people (including full grown adults) in the northern hemisphere have no idea about this.

If the raise takes you from just under one tax bracket to just over the next, and comes with added responsibilities, you might question if the change in take-home pay is worth it. As in effect there may not be a big a rise as you think. In other words, ask for a bigger pay raise to make the net income worth the responsibility. You'll still get more money though.

Person in a wheelchair indoors, illustrating common knowledge that often surprises and blows people's minds. When I became a wheelchair user, I thought “wheelchairs don’t do stairs” was common knowledge. So imagine my shock when I started coming across people who thought 3-5 steps would still be considered “wheelchair accessible.”

This is why we need to be super specific when asking if a place is wheelchair accessible. We need to ask if there is step-free access. “Oh yeah, we are wheelchair accessible, there are just one or two steps” isn’t an acceptable answer.

Fun Fact: in the US the majority of " wheelchair access" in restaurants, cafes, etc is in the alley behind the dumpsters. Nothing says unwelcome like having to go through a garbage filled alley to the kitchen entrance to go in. Also the number of buildings who place a ramp with zero regard for how steep or slick it is ...astonishing.

I have traveled in Argentina, Japan, France, and England. I was actually shocked at how inaccessible so many restaurants and venues were in these countries. Never mind entering the place through the alley, there is absolutely no accessible entrance at all. Oh, and please don't hope you're going to be able to access the restroom either as that will be down a flight of stairs in the basement. This is not a complaint, just an observation. The older a city, the more difficult it is to make existing structures accessible. I get that. Also, the US is not a shining example of accessibility across the board either as this post indicates. However, I think the whole world has a lot of work to do regarding making life better for differently abled individuals.

Chicken specially bred to lay eggs will, for a period of time. Once they slow down, they are finished with. Chickens, if they had been left wild, would not lay at this rate.

It is the result of producing an egg without fertilization, but that doesn't make it the equivalent of a period.

How to properly train and own a dog. The amount of people who know nothing about dogs is baffling to me. The belief of alpha hierarchy has been proven false in both dogs and wolves for over 20 years by researchers. Yet, people still use it and recommend it as a form of training. It’s proven harmful. This leads to fearful and aggressive dogs.

There is a TON of ignorant dog owners. Not only do they spread false information, they don’t even bother fact checking themselves.

The reason why dogs end up in shelters is because of BOTH irresponsible breeding and irresponsible/uneducated owners.

The whole 'alpha' thing came from a studied, disproved by the person who did the study in the first place. He did it by studying random captured wolves in captivity. So it was the same as if you studied prisoners and decided that was an accurate representation of all human behavior. In reality, wolf packs are family units. Mom and Dad run things, and the rest are just the children. So the guy you see at the amusement park with the waist pack full of snacks, making sure his kids are fed, hydrated and having a good time, that is the truest alpha male you'll ever meet.

Often its the people who think the only reason to have a dog is as a status symbol or as a way to have power over a helpless animal. My BIL refused to believe that our dogs were trained companions that took care of our needs, as much as we wanted to take care of theirs.

Then don't get a dog as a pet. It's true there are working dogs who live outside in outside shelters, spending their days herding, guarding, etc. Those are not your buddy, they are your assistants and should be treated with kindness well cared for but with respect for their breeding. Service dogs are trained to work to help their person, but are not pets. K9s are working dogs until they retire. Any other dog is your buddy and should be treated that way

Two students discussing common knowledge while reviewing a grammar book and notes outdoors. That in English, apostrophes are generally used for contractions (cannot=can't) or to show possession (the bone belongs to the dog. The dog's bone). It is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE USED FOR PLURALS. 1 dog, 2 dogs. 1 ex, 2 exes.

Yes! Recently medical researchers have discovered there is an immune system organ in the nose that acts as the first line of defense when breathing in a virus. Cold dry air makes that organ not function, thus making the invading virus more successful at causing the common cold. Even just being in very dry air can make that organ less effective. That is why I sleep with a humidifier during the winter.

My grandparents were worried that having a window open at night would let in "night air" that would make you sick. I asked my grandmother why going outside in the dark didn't have the same effect (we had to leave to go fishing before 4:30 am, or my grandfather would pitch a fit). No one prepares these types of food themselves anymore - it's all store bought. And just like the entry about not knowing meat was dead animal flesh - who was going to teach them? Does anyone even TALK about food sources anymore? My grandmother grew her own cukes and pickled 'em, as well as prepared her own coleslaw and pickled beets. We lived in the suburbs, but could easily reach rural areas with a short drive, so were able to buy meat and vegetables at the farms they were grown on. Not to mention being able to pick wild strawberries and blueberries every summer. None of these experiences are in any way available to most people today (at least in the US).

It's not that it's not available, if it was a wifi hotspot blueberry and blackberry picking would probably enjoy quite an upturn in popularity. Young folks may not be so keen since it's easy for the first 15 minutes or so. Here in West Michigan there's lots of berry picking opportunities for those who are adventurous.

Only in America is "A pickle" an individual thing. Elsewhere it's a generic term that can be applied to a variety of things, so Branston is a pickle, so is piccalilli. The vegetable most commonly used in the US is a variety of cucumber, in Europe we have others in various sizes but call them pickled gherkins or cornichons, with a couple of languages having different words for slightly different sizes/varieties.

"Obamacare" is essentially what the Senate Republicans proposed in the 1990s to counter Bill and Hillary's health care proposals. So it should be called "Dolecare" after GOP Senate leader Bob Dole. But after Dole did all those Viagra commercials, Dolecare seems to have been removed to another context.

So many people don't realize that calories = energy. Yes, you can have too many calories, but if you don't get enough your body starts performing at less capacity. Having a certain amount of calories a day is very good for you, its really the vitamins and sugars and nutrients that are what you need to be putting in your body/monitoring more than the calories.

I hate that quip 😒 your perception of "common knowledge" is biased from what you learned growing up, it's always subjective, there are no universal truths. And a lot of "common knowledge" are myths and tradition, nothing more.

Three black and white cows standing on a grassy field at sunset, illustrating common knowledge about farm animals. That cows have to be kept repeatedly pregnant to continue producing milk- too many people think that cows are just always making milk and it somehow "needs to be relieved" when their udders are full.

I believe the amount of milk produced each day will start to drop off, so the cow will produce more milk if they calve about once a year. However, cows DO produce a lot of milk each day, and without a calf to drink it, will need to be milked. Also, this keeps the volume up. Ask a nursing mother if she feels pain when she is full for confirmation.

The key is that the process starts with a pregnancy. Producing milk is not their natural state. Yes, once you take the calf they may experience some discomfort from not being milked, but their supply would also dry up the same as a humans if they weren't milked.

And if you're a woman taking Premarin for menopause, please don't - it comes from pregnant mare urine. They keep the poor mares pregnant and send the numerous babies off to be sold as meat. Some get rescued, but they're not purpose-bred horses so they usually don't end up in good situations. I can't believe it's still legal. 😥

How is this true? We as humans will continue making milk so long as there’s a demand for it - just like that freak show who breastfed her son until he was 6. It’s supply and demand, not pregnancy that keeps it flowing.

The point is: Could she breastfeed BEFORE having her son? Did they k**l her son so she would continue to produce milk? Do you get it now?

I suspect it's because that isn't true of humans. We can keep producing milk so long as it is expressed or they are nursing. Hence nature led weaning moms who have 3,4, and 5 year olds still breast feeding. Cows on the other hand stop producing after 9 months and need to have another calf to start the milk back up

Close-up of a hand with an intravenous line, illustrating common knowledge that is surprisingly not so common. Getting an IV does not mean a needle is left inside you while that IV is in place.

While I don't expect everyone to know this, I continue to be surprised that people who actively have IVs in place do not know this.

    hotdiggity75:

I didn’t know this and now I feel stupid.

    LegCompetitive6636:

The needle has a plastic tube, a catheter, on it which is left inside the vein when the needle itself is removed
Edit: just to clarify more, the needle pierces the vein then the catheter is advanced further into the vein and the needle is removed, that long needle isn’t going all the way in your vein.

I ripped out the IV, and boy, does that also make a hell of a mess. I covered the hallway with blood all the way to the toilet. And still sh*t myself before I made it there. Not my finest hour. Oops. 🤷‍♂️

I found out last year (66) when the nurse removed it and I yelled "it's bent!" thinking my vein had deformed a needle. She smiled and told me it was a plastic tube and I did feel like a bit of a plonker.

I've had like 3 IVs for various doctors visits (heart condition) and I didn't know this... hehe. I just don't think its something doctors explicitly say very often, the patient just knows that something is constantly poking them, and they see the needle go in, so they assume needle. TIL!

I'm going to tell you a reason why. When I first started teaching, kids were held back if they did not pass criteria for a certain grade. Then school boards figured out that it costs districts a lot of money to do that. Kids were being pushed ahead instead. Welcome to the good ole USA.

Maybe they also like nice things. I have someone in my family who likes things that are 'quality' (designer, expensive, well-made - clothing or furniture) and others, myself included, who care about how something looks or functions, but it doesn't have to be 'nice' - i.e., fancy. Close-up of a person’s midsection wearing a black crop top and black pants, highlighting common knowledge revealed. Thin doesn’t mean healthy. You could be what the BMI chart considers to be a healthy weight, but that’s just weight. You still need to eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle; weight isn’t the only indicator of health, but the number of thin/average weight people who eat [badly] but don’t understand why they feel bad is alarming.

It's called pyrolsys (spelling may be incorrect). And it has been done for tires and plastics by several companies for a good while now, the only problem is it's extremely dangerous to have a giant pressure cooker, and the value if the many recuperated oils, gasses and diesel fuels arent as cheap as fresh stuff.

As a former paramedic and child of law enforcement and firefighters ... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE FORGET WHAT TO DO WITH EMERGENCY VEHICLES COMING TOWARDS/AROUND THEM!!

STOP. Dont stop in the middle of an intersection, dont jerk your vehicle to try and get outta the way subsequently causing another accident, dont try to beat the EMS vehicle, dont follow the vehicle, just pull over safely (or, if all you can do is stop where you are, STOP). Seriously, the amount of accidents that happen with EMS vehicles to and from calls because of people who just panic or are so wrapped up in their phones, vlogs, conversations etc that they dont see big wee-woo's is insane.

Some US states have laws that require stopping, others only require to slow down and yield right of way. I live in a cosmopolitan city where most people are from somewhere else, so compliance with emergency vehicle laws is chaos (Los Alamos, NM).

I don't get the people who are in the opposite lane that slow down and pull over when there is absolutely nothing blocking the emergency vehicle in their own lane. Do they think they are going to veer into the opposite lane for the fun of it? I also don't understand the people who will avoid a pedestrian or bicycle by veering far into the opposing lane to avoid them - when there is a car already occupying that lane, but that's another discussion.

That depends on whether there is a solid median or not. If there is a solid median, opposing traffic does not have to respond unless the emergency vehicle is using a designated turning lane. If there is no solid median, then they should stop/pull over in case the emergency vehicle has to use the opposing lane to dodge idiots or go around stopped traffic at an intersection, and if they need to turn onto a side street from the turning lane.

This was when I was still working. I got out of work and on my home. Came upon a four stop. I was first in line going east. No one was moving I glanced to my right and left. Didn't see anything so I proceeded to go. As I went through the stop sign all of a sudden I hear a blast from my right. I look back and seen a ambulance coming down the road. It was quite a ways down the road. If I had looked better and noticed it I would have waited but since I was already partway through the intersection I kept right on going.

In the UK if you pull over/move out of the way and commit a traffic offence you can still be prosecuted for dangerous driving even if you were moving out of the way of an emergency vehicle.

The lack of knowledge religious people have about their religion tends to surprise me.

    Surullian:

American churches don't tech the bible. The ministers make speeches about what they believe, then cherry pick parts of the bible to quote that seem to back them up.

What I remember most from the times I've had to go to church in life was how most of the sermons I heard were actually quoting the bible.

Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. Small bird perched on a wooden bird feeder, illustrating surprising common knowledge about nature and wildlife. Local bird species. I grew up in a family that loved birdwatching, whenever we saw a bird they would refer to it by its name. For example, we wouldn’t just say there were birds on the feeder, we would say that there were goldfinches and grosbeaks on the feeder, etc. I am no expert, but I thought that knowing some common species was as normal as knowing some common dog breeds. Hearing that someone doesn’t know what a junco looks like, for me feels like someone saying they don’t know what a husky looks like.

Yeah, I'd expect people to know the birds they always see (In the case here; magpies, pigeons, ibises, noisy minors and blue-eyed honeyeaters), not necessarily by name but they know what it is. The less common ones, they probably know too, but don't know *what* they are.

I grew up very interested in animals and reading loads about them. It’s so surprising how little other people know. A very bright business woman friend showed some of us a photo of a bird she saw on a fence while driving (her son took the photo) to ask what it was. It was a buzzard. They are *really* common around here and I was incredibly surprised she didn’t know and hadn’t been interested to ask until now.

Some people just don't care. Maybe they don't like birds. Maybe they like watching them and that's the extent of their interest. A lot of people don't know common dog breeds, either. My late dad once told me he saw a bluebird in the back yard. I asked, a real bluebird? or a blue jay? He said it was a bird and it was blue. Spoiler - it was still in the yard. It was a jay.

The separation of powers in the United States.

The Legislature creates or changes laws, and the branch that controls funding.

The Executive or President is final approval of law and who then enforces the laws, and also the branch that runs the Government.

The Judicial Branch with our Legal system is the ones who determine if a law should stay or should be removed from the books. They also able to overrule the Executive if they feel a law is not being enforced.

They all have roles, ALL of them, not just the President. That is why he is not and cannot be an absolute ruler or King. 🙈🤷‍♂️

… and this IS as good thing, regardless of who the president might be.

Talking of Kings, a lot people seem to think that the monarch has absolute power in the UK and that the UK isn't democratic. The UK is a constitutional monarchy meaning that the monarch has very little to no power over how the country is run, and hasn't had for centuries. We even executed a king for treason because he believed he wasn't answerable to Parliament. Our laws are made by elected members of Parliament. We do have an elected leader, called the Prime Minister and even they aren't unanswerable. Another general election must be called within five years of their appointment. Several Prime Ministers have been forced to resign because of their conduct. While in theory the monarch has to give royal assent to make a bill an Act of Parliament, in practice they would never refuse and this is considered more of a formality these days. The last monarch to do so was Queen Anne in 1708, and she only did that on the advice of ministers.

That human bodily fluids contain germs and other disgusting gunk, which can in turn linger on public surfaces.

This after a co-worker touched an elevator button and proceeded to immediately dig the insides of his nose. I told him, you never know where the hands of the previous person could've been - up scratching his armpits, picking up some slimy [stuff], etc - before touching that same button.

And it's just ewwww that he would touch the same surfaces before putting it inside his nose.

His response - "*That can't be. If we can't see those germs then there's probably nothing there*."

Even before Covid, I've always avoided touching elevator buttons, door handles, etc with my fingers and used my elbows instead. If I had no choice, I would at least remember to avoid putting it in my mouth, nose or eyes before washing my hands.

How to use computers in general, it's funny cause there are at least 2 generations alive right now who don't truly know how to work one and both are completely different in terms of age.

A woman I know, my age, couldn't find a website. I suggested she copy and paste the URL. She was confused, and I assumed she didn't know the term URL so I explained. It turns out she has no idea what copy and paste mean. Also I am finding out how many people I know, who use iPhones every day, do not realize that the internet exists outside of Facebook.

We might need to go back to teaching the internet. This sounds odd, but hear me out. When it first came out, obviously no one knew how it worked except a few who bothered to learn. Then, around when I was a young kid (Gen Z), we had classes in the computer rooms where we learned how to use word, basic internet, common shortcuts etc. Every week we'd go up, sometimes we'd have tests, just like a normal subject. So, for my classes all through highschool, because of this, everyone who was with me in primary school knew how to properly use a computer, building upon foundations themselves with more complicated things, instead of figuring out how to go to a website. They don't do them anymore, and it shows. Many kids, having no foundation, end up not learning anything at all. It's really difficult to learn how to use the internet, and anything online!

With technology, people often only learn to use the things they need to know. I have rudimentary skills because I don't work in a field that requires more. In fact if there is something I need to do, often I have a work around using programs I do know how to use. The kids I teach know how to search for colouring pages on google and then are at different stages of learning to copy and paste them to word so they can be printed, because that's what they are interested in. Many don't know much beyond this, though they are taught to use email, blogs, write documents etc at different levels in school. My grandad retired from teaching around the time computers became commonplace. He had learned to use electric typewriters and various other technologies in order to teach his students, as time went on, but because he was no longer teaching, he decided he didn't need to learn to use a computer. He got through another 3+ decades using an electric typewriter or having us type his notes into a computer.

I still see folks on reddit talking about the "alpha dog" theory.

there's no such thing as an "alpha" dog, even in wolf packs the hierarchy goes to the breeding pair of a family unit. the breeding pair keeps the pack cohesive.

in domesticated dogs, the social hierarchy is fluid based on immediate needs and opportunity, and is constantly being reevaluated and adjusted to. what people assume is "alpha dominance" in a group of dogs is just a dog atm displaying more confidence in its surroundings and prioritizing its needs, be it resources or instincts. humans are the "pack leader" because they are the ones in control or in possession of the dog's priorities. this is how we domesticated them to begin with...and are able to teach them silly tricks.

How sound works. Now, I'm a highly trained audio engineer, so I'm biased, but I'm not talking the fancy tone pitch and frequent stuff. Just the simple fact that sound is often directional and gets soft rapidly.

My church's sanctuary had 4 speakers installed when I started attending. They were sideways, under a soffit, and pointed up to the vaulted ceiling. And they sounded [bad]. I got then rotated upright and pointed at the seating area, and it was night and day.

Although South Park's famous 'brown note' is a myth, a lot of churches with pipe organs have one pipe that produces infrasound; a note so low that it is below the range of human hearing but which can be felt as a vibration. If ever somebody tells you that they felt the presence of God in church, that was the organist playing the infrasound note at a pre-arranged point in the sermon.

When I was working in a video arcade ( noisy environment ), I would constantly have to ask people to repeat themselves, because they would turn away in the middle of a sentence to point out what they were talking about, but not talk any louder to compensate for the fact that the weren't talking *toward* me any more. So the background noise would drown them out -- and then when they said it again, they'd do the exact same thing.

Gravity at the International Space Station is about 90% of the earth's gravity. People think that the astronauts appear floating because of lack of gravity.
It's actually because they are in a continuous free fall as they orbit the earth. Kind of like you would look if you were inside an elevator that was free falling towards the ground floor.

But 'attachment style' (implying a fixed characteristic) sells books - kind of like astrology or Meyer's Briggs.

Organic farming adopted 100% on a global scale would lead to major price shocks, crop failure and famine. Organic production also blows conventional production away when it comes to CO2 emissions, producing more carbon per pound of food produced . And last, the rules for organic certification are often arbitrary and meaningless, meant only to virtue signal to end consumers.

Actually, it would lead to mass starvation. We can only support our population with modern fertilisers. It takes far to long to fix nitrogen in the soil naturally, unfortunately.

The Western Australia wheatbelt produces about a third of Australia's grain and the ancient soils can't grow anything without modern fertilizer as they lack many essential minerals and nitrogen. Most of that grain is exported to the middle east as it is suitable for flatbread. Poor season here means high food prices there.

Organic crops use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, under certain rules regarding their origin ('non-synthetic') and makeup. Often they contain more of these chemicals, because they are less effective than the conventional ones.

The major problem is the growth of population. In the 1950s we were with 2.5 billion, and there was enough food available without the necessity to poison soil and k**l the insects. Today we are 8 billion, who waste about 50% of the food grown, and the fields need an IV-line because giant monoculture farms have eradicated every naturally supporting insect

We are losing our effective antibiotics at a shocking rate that far outpaces the rate at which we discover new antibiotics. We will return to the days of people dying of simple infections within most living people’s lifetimes. If you are younger than 45 today and live until you’re 70, this will likely be what [ends] you.

Most antibiotics are given to animals - ones supplying our meat. This causes run off into the water systems, and our taking them in when we eat the meat. It helps the animals grow more quickly and stops them from succumbing to diseases when we have them all packed in rather than allowing them to eat real food for their species in a decent setting. Humans only take about 15-20% of all antibiotics produced.

“Tucking in” the string when you put in a tampon. My mom advised me to do that the very first time I wore one, so that 1) it would be possible to go to the bathroom without having to take the tampon out, and 2) there’s no risk of the string sticking out in a bathing suit.

Fast-forward to now, when I’ve heard way too many times to count from other women how they hate having to take the tampon out every time they [go to the bathroom], or how it’s a miracle that the string is staying in their bathing suit, etc etc. Come to find out, mainly from reading internet discussions, that almost NOBODY knows about tucking in the string?!?

A correctly inserted tampon should in no way interfere with urination, regardless of where you put the string (unless you somehow manage to push the end of the string into your urethra?) I absolutely agree we need more safe/sane education about menstruation for everyone going through puberty!

While we're on the subject of periods, if you're taking hormone contraception that stop your periods, the blood doesn't "go" anywhere. Blood from periods is the lining of the uterus breaking down, so if you're taking hormone contraception, then this stops the lining building up to begin with, and therefore means a fertilised egg can't implant, hence no period. I've met a suprising number of adult women who seem to think that the moment they stop taking contraception all of the blood from their missed periods is suddenly going to come out like their uterus has just been storing it up.

If you have PCOS, then you can have a long build up, and very heavy periods that last weeks to months. So, the lining can build up in some people, and it is easy to understand how they could confuse that with a medicinal hormone that stops periods. (Mine were 6 months apart and then I bled for 3-6weeks)

The ones ending in 0 or 5 generally traverse all, or at least most, of the continental US, either north to south or east to west. The others are shorter. There are even some, like 610 in the Houston area, that are just loops around cities.

That you have to take the corn husk off of a tamale before eating it. My wife made tamales for her coworkers and many of them didnt know to do that.

Lots of people have no idea who Amerigo Vespucci was, even though he’s widely known in my country. If you’re wondering, he’s the one who realized that Christopher Columbus had actually reached a new continent rather than India. That’s where the name “America” comes from.

This is highly disputed - not least because places were never named after someone's first name unless they were royalty. It's much more likely to have been named after Richard Amerike, an Anglo-Welsh merchant, customs officer, and sheriff of Bristol, who some believe was the owner of the ship Matthew used by John Cabot, but there's no conclusive proof either way.

If there's proof of a map in 1507 that has America on it, and it is known to be named after Amerigo Vespucci, then there is evidence one way. Dont gaslight physical evidence by pretending it doesn't matter. History may be faked, but it shows at least a piece of reality.

The consensus view continues to be that America is named after Amerigo Vespucci. 1507 German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller first to use the name America on his world map "Universalis Cosmographia" The name America is placed on what is now called South America on the main map. As explained in Cosmographiae Introductio, the name was bestowed in honor of the Italian Amerigo Vespucci.

Richard Americ who was welsh is where America comes from. His map was labelled Americ’s land and then shortened to America.

Try listing these in order of (average) size from smallest to largest or I guess in order of orbit. I’ll put them in a random order, you reorder them.

    * Galaxies
    * Moons
    * Stars
    * Solar Systems
    * Planets

I was surprised how few people can do this.

Surprised at how little knowledge of civics most people have........

    * That the First Amendment applies only to the government and not individuals and businesses.
    * That a presidential executive order applies only to the Executive branch of the federal government and is not a law.
    * That a presidential pardon can apply only to someone convicted on federal charges and does not apply to someone convicted on state or local charges.
    * That a person born in a foreign country to a parent with US citizenship is automatically a US citizen.

If your parents went through the paperwork to report your birth to the US embassy. The actual requirements have changed over the years, so it partly depends on when you were born. OTOH, the children of US military usually have an easier time being recognized as citizens.

That modern physics is real. I've spent my entire adult life reading books about physics. Some things that I just take for granted, I find a lot of people have trouble wrapping their minds around. Things like time being relative or the concept of superposition are just intuitive for me. We've proven time is relative. We've measured it. It's not a fringe idea. Superposition is fundamental to quantum computing.

It comes from how the stomach is physically sideways, and when laying on the left, the esophageal sphincter which is on the right side of the stomach is higher up. It does work for those with sensitivity issues and acid reflux like me.
