How exactly is painting an "incredible invention of the 1900s that was ahead of its time"? Good painting, fair enough, but how does it belong here?

My grandfather got this off a friend in 1945 for 100$, the pepper shaker on top has been missing for 60 years but was found at an antique show completing the set. And it’s blue!

I’m also assuming that’s a griddle, given they became popular at the same time.

To find out more about the wonderful world of vintage items, we reached out to Karen Bil Ratzlaff, creator of Hunting for Vintage. Karen was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and explain how she first became interested in objects from the past.

“Born into a lower middle class family, almost everything in our house was utilitarian and pedestrian. When I hit my teen years, I found myself drawn to older things because they seemed so exotic and intriguing,” she shared. “I managed to snaffle what I thought were the best pieces in our house to decorate my bedroom—a vintage tiger painting from Japan and a tapestry from India. From that point on, vintage and antique things held more appeal than newer things.”

    My 1959 Frigidaire Custom Imperial

    My 1959 Frigidaire Custom Imperial

My dream stove. I wanted a vintage stove for the longest time, and when this one popped up in my favorite color (for $400, no less) I made the four hour drive and shoved it in the back of my Honda Element and drove it right back home. She’s a dream. Works perfectly. Takes three grown men to move her, but she’s worth it.

My grandmother had that kind of stove in Vomit (olive) green, except the four burners were along each side with removable cast iron griddle in the middle. I would drop 100 strangers off the top of a building to have a stove anywhere near that functional again.

“When I finally had disposable income, I indulged a secret passion and started collecting vintage sterling silver charm bracelets,” Karen says. “They had gone out of fashion by then, but I adored them.”

“My first purchase at an antique store (pre-eBay days) was both exciting and heartbreaking. Even with a 20% discount, I found out later I had paid way too much. I didn’t make that mistake again,” she noted.

My Dad used a Commodore 64 even after they bought a PC. He went through 3 of them. Did his stock calculations on them using a custom program he developed. I can remember when my brother bought one of these home on loan from his work place. We wrote a program for hangman and did some amazing graphic effects for the ability of the machine, that was the start to him starting his own business programming computers to do just about anything you could think of.. He came close to reaching millionaire status before his health turned everything round and he had to sell everything, he then went back to university and became a doctor of computers, he travelled around the world giving lectures and sometimes setting up the odd machine or two, as a favour to the people who had taken care of him when he was there..

Karen also shared some tips for anyone who wants to start their own collection of vintage items. “Do your research. Learn about it before you spend any of your hard-earned shekels,” she told Bored Panda.

“Know that prices can vary widely between online sellers, antique stores, flea markets, thrift stores, and estate sales, and that vintage things go in and out of fashion. One minute something is hot, hot, hot and then it’s not, not, not,” the expert continued. “Learn how condition affects the value. A missing dust jacket, a hairline crack or a hole makes a difference in the price.”

The first color TV I bought with my own money (also back in the 80s) was a Sharp. It was a huge beast and was likewise housed in that hideous orange plastic. Sharp must have bought tons of the stuff.

Keep in mind these were not meant to keep a kid safe during a crash (the regular seats of the cars of the era didn’t have seatbelts either.) but designed to restrain and allow the kid to see out the windows to entertain a kid.

I wonder how they secure a heavy fridge to the wall? I'd be nervous that it would come crashing down one day. We've seen entire walls of cabinets fall down, due to not being properly anchored to the wall and a refrigerator full of food is significantly heavier. I love the amount of space it saves though.

We were also lucky enough to get in touch with Kara Lines, publisher of The Collector's Companion magazine, to hear her thoughts on this topic.

Shopping for vintage is a bit like gambling, often returning home empty handed,” Kara says. “But when it pays off? Pure joy. It's a game of luck. It's a great feeling to be scanning the shelves and spot something you simply must have, knowing that there's only one, and you're the lucky person who happened to get it.”

That looks like a reproduction or possibly one that has undergone a very detailed restore. All of the metal looks pristine, the flip switch on the end, the cord isn't cloth, the handle appears to be resin - which is possible, but I would have thought wood. I guess I am comparing this "100 year old" to everything my Grandmother had from the 40s/50s/60s and my Grandmother's newer stuff had more of a patina on it than this does.

    Roger Lickers

It could be a reproduction, but the handle and base could be made of Bakelite, which was around long before 1928.

Kara pointed out that another great thing about buying vintage is resell value. “There's no reason to feel buyer's remorse. These things have already existed for decades, so the chances are, when you don't want it anymore, there will be someone else who does,” she explained. “You often hear the phrase, 'they don't make things like they used to’, and it is so true. I've got clothes from Primark that have fallen apart in a matter of months, but dresses from the 1940s that are as good as new.”

I still have over 300 vinyl records that I bought from the mid -60s to the 1990s. Although I have CDs and tapes, the sound of vinyl imo is still the best. The warmth of analog just can't be broken down to 0s and 1s without losing that in the transition.

I bought a brand-new gas oven in October of 2023. It has never worked right until today, Nov. of 2024. They finally got the 3 parts and "fixed" it this morning. We'll see if this fix works. I would take an old 1958 stove to replace this $2,000 disaster in a heartbeat.

If you’re interested in starting your own vintage collection, Kara says to let it happen organically. “If you're consciously setting out to start collecting something, then you're probably doing it for the wrong reasons,” she noted. “Some people are driven by the urge to complete a set, but that's not for everyone. You don't have to approach it with a ‘gotta catch em' all’ mentality. Buy things you like, buy things that interest you, buy things that make you smile.”

And if you’re looking for objects online, Kara warns readers to be careful which sources you trust. “One eBay seller can incorrectly label an item, and a dozen well-meaning bloggers will take it as gospel. The internet will always be a minefield of misinformation.”

Not particularly. My Mom still has hers, and it's fine, but I prefer the newer ones that create Belgian-style. But there is a neat feature that this doesn't make obvious: you can flip the iron plates that form the waffle divots, and use it as a sandwhich-maker.

Modern ones cost so much because they do things that these older ones can't (debatable if this is necessary or not), such as detaching the seat component and locking it in place as a car seat, or having modular storage underneath.

The Rolls Royce of baby transport... they weighed an absolute ton to push and you could buy a sunshade to fit onto the body with a lovely white canopy with tassels all the way round.. I had one as a baby and would hit the tassels and rock the whole thing backwards and forwards, until I went a bit too far and tipped the whole pram up on it's end... it's a good job I was strapped in else I could have fallen out and got crushed underneath it..

At least where I'm from, you went for meat at the butcher's and eggs, milk and cheeses from the dairy. You went to the deli for cold cuts. But I'm not THAT old; when I was a kid we went to the "deli" mostly for candy, soda, pre-made foods (sandwiches, salads, entrees) and the newest coin-op video game machines. There still were dairies and butchers' shops. Drive-through dairies were pretty cool.

Went to fit carpets in an older couples house in around 1981 and found £2,000 pounds ( about £8,000 now) spoke to the gentleman and he had no idea about it. Lady looked a bit sheepish and said, "oh, I've been putting that aside for a few years!" Put some aside for me, please!

Doubtful that those are the original pills. Not unless it was kept VERY still in a VERY dark and temperature-controlled space. Any movement causes friction which leads to the tablets breaking down. And light would have faded those closest to the surface.

It so much depend on the environment. But don't toss anything like this, recycle it in right place. Fruits could be OK to throw in right places in nature, but not banana peals for example.

The Mignon is an index typewriter whose rectangular index includes 84 characters in seven rows. The lowercase letters are arranged on the right, the capitals on the left, and special characters on the perimeter. The arrangement of the characters follows the order of their frequency, starting with the center of the index.
