Whether we're talking about people's height, truck sizes, or even the health of our skin and the calmness of our neighborhood, context is king.

If we had nothing to juxtapose these things against, we simply wouldn't know how they "fit" into the world.

So in an attempt to broader your horizons, we at Bored Panda put together a new collection of the most interesting comparisons. Continue scrolling to check out the pictures and catch up on the series here, here, and here.

This brought tears to my eyes. My son is 14 years old and autistic. He cuddles with me on the couch or comes and cuddles with me in bed in the middle of the night. He always grabs me around my head to pull me in closer to his head.

His name is Odin! I don't know if his family does any social media with this handsome fellow, but I recognize him from another picture that's appeared on BP several times before. There's also an educator named Chris who does interviews with individuals who have special needs as a motivator for more inclusion

If these pictures make you experience awe, I have great news for you. It is associated with lower stress and inflammation levels, and a higher sense of meaning and connection.

According to researchers who study the emotion, awe has two fundamental components. It is a response to encountering something more vast, complex, or mind-blowing than we had conceived of either physically or conceptually.

And the experience also induces a change in how we see the world, producing “little earthquakes in the mind.”

To understand the concept, it helps to know how the brain responds to what we perceive as mundane.

Over the course of our lives, our brains learn and encode what normal is and predict what we think should happen next, based on our internal understanding of the world.

“That prediction of what happens next guides our behavior. It is crucial for being able to function in this incredibly complicated world,” said Michelle “Lani” Shiota, an associate professor of social psychology at Arizona State University. “But it does narrow our perspective, it narrows our vision. And it simply doesn’t account for everything.”

Sometimes I Don’t Realize How Far I’ve I Come Until I Look Back

I spent most of my adolescence in and out of hospitals and treatment centers, every day at war inside my own head and scared of my thoughts. I had to re-discover who I am, what made me happy, and what made life worth living for.

Research found that experiencing something extraordinary may make us (and our worries) feel small. And not in a bad way.

“You know, by adulthood, we move through the world pretty immersed in our own concerns, our own minutiae of the day-to-day, our own responsibilities, and it can be hard to keep a sense of perspective about how that fits into the grand scheme of things,” Shiota explained.

SRSLY!! I'm so dang jealous! I majored/got my degree in English/Creative Writing with the intent to become an author. I have so many novels/worlds/books "in my head". My dad unfortunately had an accident that resulted in a catastrophic brain injury when I was 18, so my author dreams were put on hold (he was fully disabled as a result of the accident, and we chose to take care of him at home, and I was his primary caregiver because <3 my dad) but these days with modern self-publishing options (literally Amazon has one), I have no excuse any more! XD This dude in the pic has just lit a fire under my butt... I'm going to get back to writing like I always wanted to do! :D My dad passed away last year after 21 years of being in a near-vegetative state, so as awful as it sounds... now I have the time/life energy :(

A 2021 study discovered that feeling more awe is correlated with reporting feeling lowered levels of daily stress. Interestingly, people who feel more awe also tend to have lower levels of inflammatory cytokines.

Positive experiences of awe have also been linked to increased feelings of well-beinglife satisfaction, and a sense of meaning.

I do this as well as colorizing black and white images. Me and about 75 other photographers and helpers saved photos for families affected by a flood in 2016. Those we couldn't save we took photos of families and made as many memories as possible to ease the heartache of losing irreplaceable pictures.

In turn, recent studies have found that awe-prone people may be more prone to being curious, and people who experience more awe also tend to be more creative.

Awe leads people to feel more connected with others and identify with more universal categories such as “a person” or “inhabitant of earth,” as opposed to more individualistic, limited ones.

In different studies, when researchers induced awe in participants in laboratories, such as by showing panoramic clips of places on Earth, people behaved more prosocially, being more likely to help out, donate more money and volunteer more time for noble causes.

They must have set her up before the water and rocks; I imagine she'd have a harder time accessing that area now. You can tell that they took it at a slight different angle because of the mountain in the background of the newer photo. It's fully in frame whereas in the earlier photo it's just beginning out of frame. I wondered that too.

I used to play football and we signed this pint-sized fellow as an attacker. I thought 'as if he's gonna make a dent in some six foot two defender, they'll wipe the floor with him'. The first time he leapt against one of our defenders in training, there was an audible collective gasp from all the players and coaches. This guy could leap higher than almost anyone. His technique was flawless. The poor defender was totally bamboozled. I think he's still in therapy for it.

Setters are usually always short though. Their job isnt to spike it but to set it up perfectly to be spiked. They have to cover their position of course but it's mostly the other blockers that run and jump up to block them from getting a ball slammed in their face. GOOD setters are difficult to sub someone if they're hurt. So I'd say this picture is pretty accurate. Our setter was 4'11&a half" tall

My twin! I'm 4'11 and played competitive volleyball in hs. I used to walk under regulation net and my head wouldn't touch the bottom edge. And yup, was a hardcore setter. Also, we dive and dig fast to prevent opposing from scoring points. My fav memory was sending a ball over with a headshot, like a soccer ball, and the opposing team caught it saying it was out-of-play. Thanks for the reminiscing!

Geeze. I am a Brazilian that lived in Japan. I can say I never felt particularly tall there. I am about 173cm (5'7), which is about average in my country for a male. These ladies are very talking my country, and I have also seen very tall people in Japan. I worked with a young woman who had to be nearly 2 meters, and she was Japanese. So this image is surprising.

I think we need a full team photo to make any judgements. As I understand it there are ideal height ranges for each position, and a shorter person is preferred in some of them

It wasn't the removal of one tree, it was several hectares of protected endangered old growth trees on indigenous land by a logging company.

I live very close to where this photo was taken. It's heartbreaking to see. It's bad. Much worse than most realize. Big trees equal big money. Logging companies lie and say they care about the trees but they only care about the money. Logging isn't bad if it's done properly. And yes it can be done properly, not like this.

Gotta say, I wouldn't mind a truly Kosher section. Our local stores like to offer hams for Pesach (Passover) and I really wish that they wouldn't just pile up every matzoh box they can find for it. However, in this very red rural area, that they try to cater at all to Jews is kind of nice, even if they do seem to think we only eat things stamped with 'Manischewitz'.

Same. My own noise is fine with me. Other people’s noise isn’t. However, my favorite is basic quiet with nature sounds (birds, bees, wind, etc) in the background. Those sounds will never be annoying.

If they can lengthen your legs, can they shorten them too? I'd LOVE to lose a couple of inches off mine - seriously! Everyone compliments my long legs and says they want them and I tell them to get in line! Long legs are the worst when it comes to trousers and public transportation of any kind.

This is a theft deterrent, because people a re bastards. Also, this is from Costco, so they're more environmentally friendly by making the "container" mostly out of paper, which is easily recyclable.

Left one is new version, right one is older version. On new version (left) bottom page with person's details is made of plastic like how driver's licenses are, older version (right) has details page made of paper. I was disappointed when I received older version back after renewing however my son got newer version after renewing at the same time.

Buy them when they are available then. When we got women's pocket clothes in the clothing shop I worked in, they wouldn't sell. We'd have racks of them at super crazy discount at end season because no one was buying them. To create the demand they need to be purchased when available.

If women wore looser pants, there would be a point to adding proper pockets. But we (and many men) who prefer anything other than relaxed fit couldn't put anything in pockets if we had them anyway. Not without looking lumpy, and having to wrestle things in/out.

USD70 = ZAR1250. All of that would be at least ZAR1000 at my local grocery store (tax included), so that's about USD56. Doesn't seem that bad for the most expensive city in die US, I actually thought groceries are much more expensive in the US. Guess it depends on whether it's $70 before or after tax. Sorry, I have a very odd fascination with comparative prices of groceries and other living expenses.
