Laws are meant to give society structure, set standards for behavior, and help keep people safe. But just because they’re written down doesn’t mean everyone follows them.

One Redditor asked: What is something illegal that almost everyone does anyway? The answers ranged from minor slip-ups to rules you might not even know existed. Scroll down to see what they shared, and decide for yourself if these “offenses” are terrible or not so bad.

Just remember, this isn’t an endorsement—be responsible with your own choices.

Crushed soda can and folded paper with doodles on asphalt, illustrating careless behavior like driving over the speed limit. Littering and not picking up after their dogs when they poop. It's gross and i'm sick of seeing it.

I have a neighbour who let his dogs poop in front of my garage door. I hate that guy. (Edit - Unfortunately he also puts his music really really loudly at 3am and the whole neighborhood hates that so the last time I went to speak to him it escalated and I threatened to call the cops on him, so I'm really not sure that throwing dog poop on his house would fix all that...)

Collect it all in a bag and then return it to his house with a note saying "I think you dropped this". 😁

For whatever inexplicable reason, animals love me. Even the anti-social puppers whose owners are nervous about being around strangers. So....now whenever i happen across someone walking away from their dogs pile....i run up to say "hello" to the dog. A good scratch behind the ear, a along its ribs...maneuvering it closer to its mess.....and once there i start with the belly scratch.....which encourages the pupper to go belly up.....rolling around in its freshly coiled pile. "oh, i'm so sorry! What kind of selfish a$$hole doesn't clean up after their dog. I hate people like that, absolute trash." =D

It's a bylaw infraction, and people can get fined if caught and the mess is bad enough. Like, if someone kept letting their dogs s**t on the boulevard in front of their house and refuse to clean it up. Even then, I've found it to be hard-pressed to get the city to do anything.

Speeding can k**l. It is all too often far more lethal way than stepping in dogshit. Yes, dogshit can be dangerous but there are things you can personally do to limit your risk - cleaning yourself up if you come into contact usually suffices (I'm a dog walker, I pick up my dogshit but I do sometime step in other people's dogshit which piisses me off bigtime, but I clean it up and wash my hands thoroughly). You can't control the actions of some other moron drink driving, driving when off their head on d***s and speeding. Those things can k**l multiple people in one awful crash.

Few things make my blood boil more than companies scumming their way into making "buying" into "leasing" I am just happy there are EU regulators and and a SINGLE American like Louis Rossmann who has been on a righteous unhinged BUT JUST c*****e against this "practice". (I am kidding many Americans are rightfully pissed and acting against this too but their customer protections are weaker there)-------- "If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing" This has never been more true because think of the psyche of the new adobe execs and decisions makers that decided they were not evil enough by making all their products into subscriptions... and snuck in an update to copy art made with their software and upload it into their servers, basically STEALING ppls work...AND making it near impossible to unsubscribe taking you months of extra payments... How soulless does one have to be to bring a once loved company THAT LOW... Glad that s**t is getting shut down slowly but surely.

I "rip" loads of stuff I hear on streaming radio and like from YouTube. If I particularly like a song, I might investigate other stuff from that artist, and if I enjoy those things I may go and buy their CD (Polly Scattergood, Nightwish, Within Temptation) or get the album from Bandcamp (The Birthday Mâssâcre) or Amazon (numerous; before Google broke in-app purchases). I'd like physical CDs from TBM but sadly the postage quoted on Bandcamp for a CD from Canada is often *more* than the cost of the CD. 😟 And as for Amazon, why is music download, when you don't even offer FLAC or WAV, sometimes more expensive per album than a CD? It makes no sense. Either way, my piracy for most bands is a song or two tops. But when it becomes more, then it's a band on my radar and it'll be converted into a sale, a sale that may not have happened without the streaming and piracy to bring it to my attention in the first place.

Me too. I'll download a song or two... more than that, the album gets downloaded legally. So the piracy is helping in that places like iTunes etc (moreso before streaming became more popular) didn't show enough/a good enough part of the song to give you a good idea of what you were getting. Nowadays I pay for Apple Music (Apple because I have the da‍mn phone and so I've locked myself into the ecosystem like a mug for all eternity) and if I like enough songs, I'll buy the album. I do feel for users like yourself, Rick, that still want FLAC/WAV quality, because it's getting so much harder to find online nowadays.

Sometimes that makes the quality a but subpar, but listenable. If I really like the whole album and don't want to ad interruptions, like I would playing it on Youtube on the TV, then I'm buying the album.

I had a company car and it tracked acceleration, braking, idling time, and speed. Part of our bonus (and employment) was based on our driving, even when not working. I was pulled over once for being too dark in (my) the area. I gave him all the paperwork and when he came back I asked why he stopped me. The cop was making up his reason and I said it wasn't true, he said it was. I mentioned that I have a tracker in my car that measures everything. He turned and walked away.

I had to take a defensive driving course for a job once, and I was taught to match the flow of traffic. Don't go faster or slower than anyone else around you, because that's safest for everyone. So... yes, if literally everyone around me is going over the speed limit, so am I. Because it's actually safer.

1, it's not illegal; 2, you probably wouldn't understand a lot of it without legal experience; 3, you'd need that legal experience to identify parts of the Ts&Cs that are null and void because they are trying to take away rights that you actually have (such as making backups, decompilation (interoperability clause), access to source code if it's based upon GPL, etc etc); 4, very often you are coerced into a situation where you literally do not have a free choice (looking at YOU Apple, where the new Ts&Cs are shown *after* the device has been updated, not before, and agreeing is obligatory to continue using the device (which means, here, those terms are unenforceable)); 5, likewise terms shown in the installer of a paid product that were not easily available prior to purchase (the clickwrap licence), when said purchase cannot be returned after being opened, are also unenforceable.

The single most existentially challenging writing I had to do was EULAs (End User License Agreements). They have to be accurate, concise (believe it or not), unrealistically lawyer proof, and written for the general public about specific issues. And the entire time that you slave away on the text, you know that nobody will ever, ever read it.

I agree totally with their sentiment but, sadly, the worst driviing I often see it's a parent being distracted by their child in the car. Following a woman driving several children on Wednesday (UK) on a motorway and she was weaving and constantly braking for no reason we could see. (She wasn't speeding, but there were cameras so no one was!). When we passed her she was turning her head to look at the children while chatting (I was a passsenger at that time). Driving around my local town many of the mothers are in a hurry on school runs and the driving is frequently awful. In the close where I live it's the parents who zoom up the road and race onto their driveways despite there being other people's children around. My neighbour (two young boys) makes me flinch with her driving when she comes home. Her cats are often in the road as well... 🤷🏻

maybe not a child, but a dog - she was my child. but i had just got done dropping her and my wife off at her mothers before heading to work. Someone deciding they needed to be on their phone ran a stop sign and totaled my car, they hit directly where my dog had been not 5 minutes before. I was angry as hell because of where it hit. but was thankful i had dropped them off just before that happened.

Come to rural France. It seems psychologically every driver needs to be "the car in front". Sometimes to the point of somebody coming from the back and trying to overtake three or four cars at once. Can lead to some pretty spectacular crashes, which at one point was responded to (I think this was Sarkozy?) instructing the Gendarmes to breathalyse British holidaymakers because they drive on the other side of the road. Yes, it happens, especially the doddery old fools that shouldn't be on the road in either country, but it's not the problem. The need to be first and the shocking risks taken are the problem. As a person in a speed limited car, I see facepalmy behaviour on a daily basis. Coming home from work on Friday, some Audi twât so intent to get around me and the van waiting behind, they were willing to play chicken with a combine harvester. I slowed right down, as did the harvester, to let that tosspot fly through the narrow gap. 🤬

There is no drinking age restriction, only purchase age restriction. Kids drink wine in Europe, and a beer isn't going to k**l a teenager if they're sitting in the backyard with their parents. It only becomes a problem in a non controlled environment, which I admit, should be less common.

One of the dumbest laws we have here in the USA is that you have to be 21 to purchase alcohol yet you can enlist in any service of the military and possibly die for this country without ever legally drinking one drop of alcohol. Alcohol related driving causes more injuries and death, and I don't know why it's even legal when you look at it this way! I'm not against drinking at home, or at a friends/family's house, but NEVER while drinking, and please, for your own safety, NOT in public. Get drunk at home, so you are on your own turf, doing your own thing, in the privacy and safety of your home. Please.

I get ya. My adult daughter refuses to touch alcohol of any sorts. It's her choice. People who pressure and guilt others into drinking alcohol are the ones with a real drinking problem, because they want to get hammered, embarrass themselves and don't want to be the only ones to do so, just so they don't have anyone around to remember their antics.

There are plenty of people who shouldn't be considered cyclists just because they ride bicycles, but eight US states have laws allowing cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs yield. I'm not sure why it works, but the goal is to reduce accidents and it does. As a practical matter, cyclists have better visibility because there are no windshield pillars or right seat passenger to interfere with their view, and they're generally approaching the intersection at a slower speed than most cars. Stops signs make sense at busy intersections, but often they're used instead of yield signs because too many drivers don't understand how yield works. Of course a lot of them don't have any idea how a 4 way stop works, either. Three of those states also allow cyclists to treat red lights as stop signs, but IMHO the acceleration after having to come to a complete stop is the problem with both lights ans stop signs when you can easily see that traffic doesn't require a stop.

This always annoys the cr@p out of me. If you want to be treated like you belong on the road, then ride like it! That means obeying traffic laws. I would never cross an intersection against the light on a bike unless I had completely clear views of potential traffic *and* the light wasn’t changing because the sensor doesn’t detect something as small as a bicycle and doesn’t have a crossing-signal button. You get t-boned in a car, you might walk away. On a bike? You’re pizza.

I really wish drivers would start treating bicycles like they belonged on the road. It's almost daily I am honked at while driving perfectly legally on the right side of the road (which is dangerous when cycling because it startles you), not able to drive in the bike lane because people use them as parking spots, or nearly run over when taking a left turn on the road. So yeah, when drivers don't adhere to laws concerning bikes, you might end up doing the same.

Not heard of the cycle helmet paradox? This is where wearing a helmet can sometimes increase the risk of accidents by influencing cyclist behavior, a phenomenon known as risk compensation, and by influencing the behavior of other road users. Studies show helmet wearers may take more risks, and other drivers may drive more aggressively around helmeted cyclists, potentially leading to a higher likelihood of accidents, particularly for helmeted individuals. Some cyclists don't wear them for these reasons... I, however, would if I cycled 🤷🏻

I drove back from a holiday in Cornwall UK, with my wife. In another car my BIL had his wife and two kids. It was about a four hour journey, many country roads. He did his usual, driving like a lunatic, diving in and out of traffic and generally well over the speed limit. I did my usual and enjoyed the leisurely drive through beautiful countryside. He arrived eleven minutes before us and was so proud of himself. They all looked totally frazzled and we were feeling quite calm with the whole journey. Wow, well done on that eleven minutes!

My license plate frame says 'The Closer You Get The Slower I Go'. People test me on it *all* the time. A slight tap of my brakes, just enough to disengage my cruise control, is usually enough to get them to back off. I also have bumper stickers that say, 'Go Around Me, I Left On Time' and another one that says, 'If You Get Any Closer, I'll Fart'. I think the combo of the 3 helps people realize that I can't stand tailgaters and that I will go out of my way to slow them down as much as I am able to.

Pretty much every place I'm hearing how bad the drivers are. In Manitoba we also call it the Manitoba roll. There's s****y driving everywhere. This is why drivers should be reevaluated and retested, at least, every 10 years, and have to automatically do a retest every time they get a ticket. Maybe that would deter poor, aggressive driving habits.

I never heard of such a thing (doesn't mean it doesn't exist). We are simply required to come to a complete stop. If there is more than one car stopped at the intersection, there are rules of precedence regarding who goes first after we've stopped.

A pet peeve of mine. In France, just like in the US, they have Stop signs all over the place where a basic Give Way (Yield, Céder le passage) would be perfectly sufficient, i.e when you have ample visibility in both directions from some distance before the white line. I get annoyed by the people who religiously come to a full stop at the line, even if the car in front has just moved and they can see perfectly well that there is nothing coming. These days (having been done for it a couple of times) I'm just more careful to consciously look for cops parked-up as well as moving vehicles when I'm approaching such a junction.

The general rule here in the UK is that you will get a fine (and potentially points) if you exceed 10% + 2mph over the limit - so 35 in a 30, 79 in a 70. This is to allow for speedometers that underread by up to 10%, and is consequently why most cars overread by about 5%.

There urban legend you can drive say 5-10 km over the limit on your speedometer. The reasoning? Speedometer always shows speed higher than actual, plus radar tolerance. So if there is limit 130km/h, you can clock your speedometer at 140 and still within the limit. I always drive the same speed as is the limit on my speedometer. Screw the speeders.

And checking at red-lights counts as texting/driving. The law in my state, and in most other states, doesn't differentiate between the car moving and the car being stationary.

To answer SchadenFreudian, in many jurisdictions you are considered "driving" if your car is positioned on a public road in such a way as to be a hazard to others if it was not able to move and/or if the engine is running. Both would apply in the case of waiting at a red light, so you're still a driver in control of a vehicle which means no poking the magical glass.

So are police officers on motorcycles. They can get right up next to the car and see exactly what the driver is doing. I've seen them at red lights, too. They KNOW how dangerous distracted driving is!

If you've got control of the brakes and the steering, you're driving - that's how it works in the UK. If you want it to count as "not driving" when you're in the driving seat, you need to take the key out of the ignition and then ensure the steering lock engages. At least, that's how it worked several decades ago - it's possible the rules have changed since I last checked...

Close-up of a Creative Commons license symbol printed on textured paper showing common illegal actions like driving over the speed limit. Copyright/IP/TOS. SO many things rely on violating some kind of copyright or IP, or a term of service deep in a contract no one read. Granted, I do it very intentionally, but if YouTube, or the internet in general, had to rely on the word of actual IP law, nothing would exist online but text, and a good portion of that would be illegal.

Example, years ago the internet was full of websites where people wrote out guitar tabs for songs, unofficial, made by some guy online, a bunch of numbers and dashes showing you how to play a copyrighted song on guitar. The RIAA decided that was not legal, now all of the websites that don't pay them money, again to post text documents that are entirely numbers and dashes some guy guessed is the correct way to play a song, shut down.

    E: 2-2--2-4-5--5-5-4-2-2 There, I broke the law.

My father was an intellectual property attorney for over 40 years. For the most part no one is going to sue you if you post a guitar chord on your Facebook page. It's too expensive. But if your company tries to sell an exact replica of a patented medication (as long as the patent is still active) you can expect a $$$ lawsuit. Fun fact: my dad wrote the original patent for Mucinex. 😊

What annoys me is the number of companies that exist purely to make money out of copyright. They buy up the copyright to things and then send threatening emails/letters demanding "licence" fees. They create nothing and become wealthy through other people's efforts. The whole point of copyright was to protect the limited incomed of author of the works.

Meanwhile, AI companies are thieving everything they can in order to train their electronic shitgibbons, *and* lobbying for "fair use" exemptions because if a country doesn't fall for the AI hype they will get left behind. Sadly, it seems they have made some impact on indoctrinating the current British government. City street traffic with multiple cars and taxis driving over the speed limit on a wet road during rush hour. Driving behavior in big cities is often more illegal than legal. Speeding, failing to signal, aggressive driving, failing to yield, phone use/distracted driving... And that's just one traffic light to the next for many drivers!

Jaywalking was part of a propaganda campaign by the American automobile industry to shift blame for pedestrian accidents onto pedestrians and to assert the road belonged to cars not people. The word ‘jay’, meaning a country bumpkin or country idiot, was a derogatory term to ridicule pedestrians who didn’t follow traffic rules in urban areas.

Honestly speaking in my country you have no choice but to jaywalk as the zebra crossings are either non existent or you have cars parked on them. There aren’t even proper sidewalks that can fully support your body weight and the only good sidewalks have huge stalls that sell tobacco. You still get fined if you’re caught or if you just happen to follow the rules and exist near a policeman

There have been many attempts to completely block it only for the ban to be lifted again by our Supreme Court. As if I'm going to give real information to a site that doesn't need it. As an EU citizen I fall under the GDPR which requires that the collection of such information be justified. Very often it is not, it's just a data grab for the dummies that will fill in whatever questions they are asked. Might as well as for card number, expiry, and CVV afterwards...

I don't think there's ever been ruling on whether or not that sort of thing actually violates the law(s) against unauthorized computer access, because there's never been a test case to take to court. The law (like so many others) is poorly written and the plain text may make such things illegal in theory, but the law as a whole makes it clear that it's almost certainly not intended to criminalize access that was authorized based on minor, and usually inconsequential, falsehoods.

30 Crimes So Common They Barely Feel Illegal Anymore Jaywalking. At least in the small tourist town I'm from. Drives me up the wall because traffic is always bad during high season and avoiding clueless drivers who aren't from here AND meat-and-skin based obstacles at the same time is hard as hell. Especially when they hide behind cars to jump in front of you outside of a crosswalk. It's like these people go on vacation and decide "I'd like to get ran over and die today."

Walking on any part of the street is perfectly legal where I live - unless it's a motorway. We have freedom here in the UK. Driver training ensures that we learn how to anticipate hazards such as wayward pedestrians. No-one ever "hides behind a car" to jump out in front of a car - any driver who think that's happened is a poor driver.

Or turning into the near lane when you turned from the far lane. Not all states require turning into the corresponding lane, and I'm not sure if they have a law that covers the situation when other traffic make changing lanes in a turn a problem (other than catchall law about yielding). It's amazing how many stupid people change lanes in a turn even when there's other turning traffic.

There is a bit of a debate about this in France. There should be no requirement to pay tax on stuff sold at garage sales (vide greniers) because tax will have been paid on the original purchase. The current thinking is to have people declare on their honour that they only attend *two* in a year (usually their local and a big one). Yes, it is abused, and often by people (cough) from the east (/cough) which is annoying for all of the rest of us. That being said, vide greniers have largely been a lot of cr@p for a decade or so, as anything worth anything tends to get listed on Le Bon Coin (France's answer to eBay).

Padstow, Cornwall. You used to be able to buy little bags of seeds to feed the seagulls, but they really like chips and they absolutely *will* help themselves, right down to flyby whipping it out of your mouth if there's enough they can grab onto. And, yes, you'll get a faceful of dusty wing because gulls are fast but not especially agile and they just don't care. They'll smack right into you but "WORTH IT!" if they get that chip. Doubly so if you're so startled the rest go flying, some will be grabbed before they reach the ground.

Only some pets in the US require licenses, and it depends on your state. For the most part, it’s only dogs and “exotic” pets that require registration. I’ve never seen a requirement for cats to be registered in the US (it may exist somewhere, but I’m not aware of it), and I seriously doubt that any state or local government will ask you to register your goldfish.

Here in France, pets need to be chipped (including cats). As explained by the mayor, if you feed a "wild" cat for a period of more than two calendar months, it is then considered yours, and it's on you to chip, vaccinate, sterilise, etc. The cat, on the other hand, may have an entirely different opinion about ownership but will grudgingly tolerate human foibles in return for regular packs of Felix.

In Australia (possibly Vic specifically? Unsure) we only need them for owning a lot of animals, or exotic ones. It's also very local council-dependent. At least in my local council area, you're required to register your cat/dog, but that's not the same as a license; it's just saying you pay for the privilege of owning Mittens/Spot (aka if the council can get more $$ out of you, they will 🤷🏽‍♀️). Not doing this is against a council by-law and is usually dealt with by a fine (unless you get a particularly wa‍nker council that takes you to court over it; some do), but not having a license for an animal when you should is more serious.

Both of my dogs are licensed. I have to register them and pay the licensing fee. Where I live (in an American state), you are required by law to license your dog annually. All dogs over the age of four months must be licensed and have a valid rabies vaccination. You can get citations/fines if you do not license your dog.
